Extending a Linksys WRT54G using an Airport Express

I bought an Airport Express from the Apple store in Atlanta last week at the recommendation of three or four of their employees. I need something to extend my internet connection to my workshop which is approximately 40 feet from my back door. I have a full signal on my PB at the door threshold. But when I go into the shop, the signal strength drops to 1 or 2 bars, and the internet connection is sporadic.
I have been told by Apple tech support that it won't work unless I replace my Linksys WRT54G with the Apple base station.
I've read that I have to get a third-party firmware to update the Linksys router.
I've been told a half dozen other conflicting solutions.
Does anyone know what to do to get this to work with my Linksys network?

Hi, Cincinnati. I suggest reposting your question in this forum.

  • Extending my Linksys Wireless Network with AirPort Express

I would like to add an Airport Express to my wireless network to extend my wifi range and add AirPlay to my home theater system.  Can Airport Express be used to extend my current wireless system that is not an Airport Extreme devise?
Also, by adding the Airport Express does this now limit the number of devices I can have on my wireless network to the 10 even if the Linksys supports 50?
    Thanks for any advise...

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your non-AirPort router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few that are known to work are:
    another Airport Express Base Station
802.11g Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
    Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    BT Voyager 2091
    Netgear WGR614 v6

  • HT4259 How to you extend my existing network using an AirPort Express?

My current configuration is a Linksys wireless router that I'm connecting to the AirPort Express via Cat. 5 cable.  Only get a flashing yellow light.  Help.

I got it working but here is the deal.  It is not intuitive; you have to set it on "Create a wireless network", not "Extend a wireless network".  You use extend a wireless network when you do it all wirelessly when the signal from the base is strong enough.  But since I couldn't reach my wireless network to boost it, I had to use the cat. 5.  So I guess it does make sense since I'm going from my WAN by cable to creating a wireless network.  For some reason I thought it was going to be seamless with my existing wireless network so therefore I was extending my wireless network.  Wrong.  Thanks for all your suggestions as I think I would have quit long ago without you help.

  • Can I extend my wifi signal using an Airport Express to Airport Express?

My main wireless is an airport express that's about 6 years old. I recently purchased a new airport express (with 802.11n and airtunes) to extend my network range to the other side of the house but it doesn't seem to work. Will the airport express only extend network via a base station? I do not have base station but now I'm thinking I should have bought that instead of another express. Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

    Welcome to the discussions, Aaron.
It can be a bit confusing, but an AirPort Express is a base station.
The issue you are having is the result of trying to use an older "b/g" AirPort Express with a newer "n" version of the product.
Whenever you have a "mix" of older and newer devices on a network and you want to provide more wireless coverage, you must use the WDS configuration on both devices.
While this will provide more wireless coverage, there are some downsides to WDS:
    1) WDS operates only at "g" wireless speeds, so you will lose any advantage of having a newer "n" AirPort Express
    2) The bandwidth of the network will be cut in half when WDS is configured. So, the bottom line here is that while you will have a bit more wireless "coverage", you'll also have a "g" wireless network that is running at half speed.
    3) Many users find WDS difficult to configure.
If you were to consider an additional purchase of another newer "n" AirPort Express, then you could make use of the "extend a wireless network" feature which maintains "n" speeds throughout the network while maintaining close to the original bandwidth of the network. This type of configuration is also much easier to configure than the WDS type setup.
Post back to let us know if you want to try the WDS setup or whether you want to upgrade to the newer "extend" setup and we can provide you with instructions on configuration of either method.

  • HT1515 extend a wireless network using my airport express

I bought an airport express back in 2006 with my macbook.  I recently bought a time capsule and am now using it as my wireless router.  Can I use my old airport express to extend / boost my wireless signal throughout my house? if so how?

Check the label on the side of the AirPort Express to see if the version that you have includes the feature to "extend" a wireless network.
If it does, you will see Model No A1264 there.
If you see A1088 or A1084, unfortunately this version of the Express does not have the ability to "extend" the wireless signal using wireless only.

  • How to extend Virgin Superhub broadband using Apple Airport Express

I need to extend my Virgin Superhub broadband (Which is downstairs) using Airport Express as my playstation looses connection (upstairs) when I'm online (especially when playing Fifa!) any ideas on how to do this as I keep getting a message saying it was unable to extend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Guys
    Jazz

If you are trying to configure the Express to "extend" using wireless only, unfortunately that feature is reserved for use with other Apple routers.  It would be extremely unlikley that it would work with a product from another manfacturer.
To have the Expesss provide more wireless coverage, you will need to connect it to the Superhub using a wired ethernet connection and configure it to extend that way.

  • Extending our Network strength using Apple Airport Express

We have nearly finished extending/refurbishing our house and as we have extended it the Router we have currently gives out a poor signal and so we are thinking about purchasing a few more Airport Expresses and we would like them to extend the signal around the house however we do not want to to have to change networks when we go in different rooms.
We have installed Cat5e in every room so is it possible to setup a system like this  Airport Express>> Airport Express>> Airport Express... and connect them using Cat5e and only have one network being broadcast and the Airport Expresses dish out the IP addresses as the router we have currently does not give out proper IP addresses?
    Cheers ???

    Thank You Very Much mwakefield

  • I've extended my Time Capsule wifi via Airport Express and the download speed is still super slow

I get an average of 80Mbps download speed when close to the Time Capsule. When I got upstairs in the house the download speed drastically drops. So I decided to extend the wifi range using an Airport Express. See image below. I've placed the Express router upstairs in the house and when I stand close to the Express I get a very slow download speed. About 7Mbps. Even slower than when I hadn't "extended" the range. What's going on...?

Well, the first rule that you need to remember is that when you "extend" using wireless.....you will have a drop in the potential speed on the network. So, while you might have more "range" for the network, the network speed will drop. Nothing that you can really do about that other than connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection. There will be no speed loss over the Ethernet cable, so the Express should deliver approximately the same speed as the Time Capsule.
The next rule is that when a device "extends" using wireless, it can only extend the quality and speed of the signal that it receives. A speed "boost" will not appear.
Try locating the Express about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage.  Anything that you can do to minimize obstructions between the Time Capsule and Express and on to the other area will help.....but you will never get close to the performance of connecting the AirPorts using an wired Ethernet cable.
Unfortunately, Apple really doesn't tell you very clearly, if at all,  about important things like the two rules above.

  • Using an Airport Express to extend a Verizon wireless DSL router? (Westell)

We recently switched our internet service over to Verizon DSL. The router they gave us is a wireless router. We have the Verizon network setup for both our computers to access it, but I wanted to use our Airport Express to connect our printer wirelessly and to extend the network. However, I can not get the Airport Express to join the Verizon network. Can anyone help with this? All I am getting is the blinking amber light on the Airport Express. I know the Verizon Westell router has its own WEP settings, which I have tried to give to the airport express, but it does not seem to be working. Very confused!!

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Westell router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • How do I Extend my airport extreme using an airport express

How do i use and airport express to extend my network off an airport extreme

Apple's step by step instructions are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
Although two Extremes are pictured, the setup for an Express is exactly the same.
If you are running Lion 10.7.3, you will need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion for the instructions to make sense.
Otherwise, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utiltiy to start the process.

  • How do I use my Airport Express 1st generation to extend my wireless network?

    Hi all,
I've got an old time capsule (1st gen) and a 1st gen airport express in another room with a USB printer connected.
There's up to 100 meg broadband from a virgin hub, but that is connected by ethernet to my time capsule.  I then configured the time capsule to be a WDS base, and the airport express to be a WDS remote.
    That all worked OK.
But the internet is incredibly slow in the office (where the Airport Express is).  Pages do load eventually, but VERY slowly!
I asked in the apple store if it was necessary to buy new stuff, because the internet is so slow, and the guy said that the system should work if I am using the airport express to extend the network.
I reset everything, and reconfigured as above, and it is still painfully slow.
    Any ideas?
I don't mind ditching the time capsule as a base station and just having the AP extending the virgin hub if that'll work - or ditching the AP and using the time capsule to extend the virgin hub....or buying a new airport express and extending the virgin hub...I jsut want fast internet in my office room!
    Thanks in advance!
