Extending a partition fails

I have a 500G hard drive in my MacBook Pro, and it has three partitions. The boot partition became full and the adjacent partition was relatively empty.
So, I backed up the #2 partition and deleted it using Disk Tools. That allowed me to "drag" the corner of the boot partition to make it larger. After a few hours, it returned a fail. I tried a second time and got the fail again.
Any clues?

Not a good one, I'm afraid. First thing to try is to Repair the hard drive (not Verify.) For this you must boot from your Recovery HD:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Unfortunately, if this does not fix the problem then you must repartition the drive which means make yourself a bootable backup or a Time Machine backup so you can reinstall everything when you finish repartitioning the drive (btw, repartitioning is not the same as simply reformatting. You will be making a completely new partition to replace the one you now have.)

    Hi again OGELTHORPE.
I've already run two hardware tests. One quick one and one extended one. It was unable to pick anything up.
It's like everything is running perfectly, but when I go to erase the HDD or partition it, it pops up with the error message. Even when I try to erase and partition using "Terminal", I received the same error message.
It's beginning to do my head in, but will see if replacing the SATA cable will make any difference. If it doesn't, I'll hazard a guess it could be the Logic Board.
    Thanks again for your suggestions!

This is a standard error message.
If you would have checked into the bootcamp forum you would have instantly found the solution.
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1244&start=0
All that error message means is that you do not have enough conguous disk space available. No big deal at all for an older system. You have bits of files strewn over the "free space."
The solution as you would find in the bootcamp forum is to clone your HD, using a file-file clone, then test the clone to be sure it is working and then to erase your HD and clone back.
    Works every time.

  • Partition failed with error input output

    Hi All,
I installed a new hard drive (WD 500G) into my 2006 Macbook, Mac OS X 10.4.10.  I also increased the RAM to 2G.  My Macbook reconized the hard drive. However, I followed the steps below to format the HD, but got the partition failed with error input output msg.
    1. Went to  Disk Utility, selected the name of new hard drive in the sidebar.
    2. Select the Partition tab, and selected 1 partition from the drop down menu.
    3. Click Options, then choose GUID .
    4. Select Partition
In previous posts someone suggested updating the softward to 10.4.11 or the erasing the HD, but erasing the hard drive would take 13 hours according to my Macbook.  Any suggestions?  Please Help!

The error usually means the drive is bad. But you can try this:
    Erase and Install OS X
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting has finished quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • Error "Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed" when installing Yosemite

I Have a MacBook Pro 8,3 17" and have been running OSX Maverick 10.9.5 quite happily.  I finally decided to bite the bullet and update to OSX 10.10.1.  I went through the App Store and clicked install on the Yosemite offered there.
THe install took about 55 mins and then right at the end it reported: Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed, install failed.
now i can't boot normally or restore from my time machine backup.
    can anybody suggest a fix?

Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

i need to install a fresh copy of OS X onto my macbook pro 13. i did erase the old partition "macintosh hd" & now when i am trying to create a new partition, it shows "partition failed..couldnt unmount disk"...pls help !!

First of all, I have to ask, why to you "need" to install a fresh copy of OSX?
This may mean that your hard drive is failing, so hopefully you have a backup.
I'm assuming you were in your recovery partition when you did this.
I would, from the recovery partition, repair your hard drive and permissions.
When to Run First Aid in Mountain Lion's Disk Utility - For Dummies
And then try to create the partition again.
If that doesn't work, you have a few options:
Try a third party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool which may be able to repair your hard drive:
DiskWarrior 4 - The Disk Utility for Mac Disk Repair, Mac Directory Repair, Mac Disk Recovery, Mac Data Recovery or Techtool Pro 7
Try internet recovery, perhaps erase the entire hard drive and reinstall ML.
If nothing else works, then I'd replace the HD and start over.

I have a Macbook pro 13" A1278. I purchased it around december 2010. I have a HHD 3.5" drive desktop select II 1.5TB. I purchased it around Febuary/March 2011 to use with my Macbook pro. I formatted it and moved all my files to there, I got it so my macbook's hard drive wouldn't brake and I lose everything on my macbook.
    Is there any fixes?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

    Hi anup002,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
The OKR system depends on the Partition ID's of the HDD, Shrinking or Extending a Partition may render the OKR Not to work.
Restoring the OKR after a partition change may be a hard work.

  • Partition failed: A problem occurred while resizing Core Storage physical volume structures

    Hi everybody,
I have just installed Yosemite on my iMac and everything works right.
    iMac 27" late 2012
    3,4 Ghz intel core i7
    32 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
    3TB Fusion drive.
Now I need to create a bootable partition to install a copy of Mavericks because some FCPX plugins do not work on Yosemite.
To create a new partition I use Disc Utility, but each time I try to create it the mac show me this error:
partition failed A problem occurred while resizing Core Storage physical volume structures
    Why?
    What can I do?
P.S. FCPX does not work on a virtual machine, so I have to install it on a new partition
    Thanks

    Ditto here.
    Same problem - I have a Apple_Corestorage partition that can't be unlocked.
You have to do this command to free up the Corestorage partition
    diskutil coreStorage delete logicalGroupUUID
    In your case, it'll be:
    diskutil coreStorage delete E2CDC5FC-DA6E-4F43-B524-8925ABB23883

  • Partition fail for new SSD

    My old HD crashed on my MacBook Pro (mid 2009) a few days ago. Took it to the Apple store and they told me to buy a new one and put it in. I've done this before, wasn't as complicated the first time around. I bought a Seagate 240gb SSD (so I don't have a moving parts malfunction again) and replaced my old HD. When I try and boot from any source, my latest Time Machine backup (10.7.5), the Max OS X Install Disk (10.5.7), or any of the steps I have found online I cannot get it to work. So I have tried to 'format' the HD by going to Disk Utility and trying to Partition the drive. When doing this on the computer through the Install Disk I get an error that says that the "input/output error". Bummer, I don't know what that means. Then I tried to do it as a Target Disc from another Mac and the Partition fail for that said 'partition failed to write to write to the last block'. I'm stuck at this point. I have no idea what to do, all I want to do is get OS X on my computer. I don't care about data at this point, I just want to load a fresh start. Any help would be great. Below are some of the details from my computer that I can remember (since I can't look them up anymore);
MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2009; Intel2 Core duo)
    8GB RAM
    240GB Seagate SSD HD

if you don't want to run in any errors, just set up win7 first . it creates a 100mb (boot?) partition, one for the system and around 1MB free space (don't ask me why).
grub itself doesn't recognizes the windows installation but its easy to edit the file. i think you just have to change the partition that it directs to window's boot partition (/dev/sda1 in my case)
    mine is looking like this:
    ## (2) Windows
    menuentry "Windows" {                                                                                                                                     set root=(hd0,1)

  • IMac "Partition failed" Message

I like to partition my 1 TB hard drive into two equal sizes and then reinstall Snow Leopart on one of them. I have upgraded to Maverick that gives me problems I can't put up with but like to keep it for the time being.
Partion failed Message is: Partion failed with the error: Coldn't modify partition because the files system verification failed.
    Any help out there?

Solved the problem myself, here is what I did:
I use only OS X utilities and Apple Time Machine Backup. One must also know the last backup date when Snow Leopard was active.
    1. make copy of Hard Drive (OS X 10.9.1, all Apps and all User data) on external USB drive (I used a USB powered drive) using Disk Utility Restore. Disk Utilty Help outlines the procedure.
    2. boot system using the copy from step 1 (follow: “Select startup disk” procedure ie. Option key) Booting and running any apps will now take much longer so be patient).
    3. make sure the copy from step 1 is really bootable and only then erase entire internal hard drive to be able split it up into two partitions (breaking it into two partition without erasing will not work ref: my original Partition failed message)
    4. create 2 partitions on the erased hard drive (I called one Maverick HD and the other SnowLeopard HD)
    5. copy the external USB drive (made in step 1) using Disk Utilities Restore onto Hard Drive Partition (you may have named Maverick HD). Make sure the Maverick HD partition is bootable using “Select startup disk” procedure.
    6. Restart System and use “Recovery tools” (Command-R). This will let you select the recovery source in this case "Restore from Time Machine Backup", press continue
    7. Select your Time Machine Recovery Drive (in my case an external USB drive), press continue
    8. Select the recovery date (Time machine will also display the OS X version), press continue
    9. Select the Destination drive (you may have named it SnowLeopard HD), press restore
This will restore the OS X version, all Apps and User data active at that date. If your user data is out of date restore the latest data from your Time Machine drive.
Now you have two bootable versions to select from using the "Select a startup disk" procedure (on startup press the option key and select your startup drive).
I have deliberately only used Apple apps for all procedures because they are part of the OS -no extra cost-  and should be the safe to use.
Similar procedure should also work using Carbon Copy Clone or the like.
PS: above should also work going back to Lion or Mountain Lion

  • Partition fails when entity manager and DBResourceMgr kept together on single CPU Sparc box

We have this situation where we create partitons with the DBResourceMgr (user-visible and session-dialogued)and its consumer EntityManager together in one partition, as recommended by Forte Design pattern for Database Resource Managers. This partition fails to startup on a Single CPU Sparc box whereas starts fine on a Double CPU Sparc box !! Any clue ?

The error you are getting is the one you get on the client when this process fails, right? You should be able to see the real problem in the log of the partition that you called (the one where DBMgrProxy lives in) - that should be on the server. The real clue is that very bizarre "This usually means the process at the other end of the wire failed. Please go look there and find out why." (:).
