Extending a wired LAN with Airport Express &  Sharing Printer

Hello.
I currently have a wired network consisting of two G5s behind a router, which is connected to the internet via an ADSL modem. Neither of the G5s have airport cards.
I want to extend the network wirelessly for two iBooks to share the existing ADSL connection. Can I do this simply by plugging an Airport Express into one of the free LAN ports on my existing router? Wouldn't this cause problems with DHCP and any port forwarding I have set up on the router?
I also have a USB printer (HP LaserJet 1300) which is currently connected to one of the G5s because the router doesn't have a printer port. After extending my network wirelessly as described above, if I plugged the printer into the USB port on the Airport Express would the two G5s be able to print to it? Would I have to use IP printing?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Dual G5 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Can this be done?
Yes, if you have an AirPort Expess 802.11"n" and you configure it to "Join a wireless network", then you can select the option to "Enable Ethernet Clients", which will activate the Ethernet port.
The Express"n" can join virtually any wireless network if you know the exact type of wireless security that the main router is using.
If you are not sure which model of Express you have, look on the side of the device in the faint print for the Model No. You need to see A1264 there.
"this network cannot be extended".
The Express can only "extend a wireless network" if the main network is provided by an Apple "n" wireless router. Do you have an Apple router or another brand?

Use any router that you want if you will be connecting the extender/router back to the AirPort Express using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
If you are planning to use a wireless connection to extend the range of the network.....then another AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule will be required.

  • Extending a time capsule with airport express twice

    Hi,
I have been trying to extend my existing wireless network recently but it never ended up how I wished...
I have one 4th generation Time Capsule (A1409) and two Airport Express 802.11n (1st generation A1264).
All currently have MAC Address base authentication and no security in place for was of testing (security not relevant at this point in time).
When I extend my Time Capsule with either Airport Express this works like a charm, the LEDs are all green and connection works for client devices.
When I extend my Time Capsule with both Airport Express the same applies, everything works.
However what I have found not to works it extending my Time Capsule with one Airport Express and then extending this Airport Express with the second Airport Express. While all LEDs are green and the second Airport is seen in the Airport Utility, I find no client are ever able to connect to it and alway either connect to the first Airport Express or to the Time Capsule. This is an issue I the area I want to cover is pretty big and I need the second Airport Express for the additional reach.
I haven't found anything against this setup, it however appears you can't connect to the second Airport. The Airport Utility would even accurately depict the situation with Airport Express one dotted line to Time Capsule, and Airport Express two dotted line to Airport Express one.
However no connection seam possible to Airport Express two.
I have swapped Airport Express one and two, and in this case Airport Express gets the clients and Airport Express one now extending Airport Express two gets none.
Is this an expected behavior, i.e. should I give up or is there anything I can do about this ?

However what I have found not to works it extending my Time Capsule with one Airport Express and then extending this Airport Express with the second Airport Express.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature will only allow you to extend the signal one level, not two. It's possible to have more than one device extending the signal, but each extender must connect directly to the main base station.....not to another device that is already extending the signal.
The Airport Utility would even accurately depict the situation with Airport Express one dotted line to Time Capsule, and Airport Express two dotted line to Airport Express one.
This is an illusion. AirPort Express is "joining" the wireless network.....not extending it. When the Express "joins" a network, it can be used for AirPlay, or a remote printer could be connected to the USB port, but the Express will not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it joins a network.
    Is this an expected behavior
Yes. I can try to look up Apple's support document that explains this if you want more information, but you may likely already have all the information that you need. Let us know.

  • I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless network with Airport Express. Everything is fine until I try to select Extend the wireless network.  I select Extend Wireless network but have no success. Ideas?

I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless to rooms with a weak signal.  The internet connection is fine with the basic setup. As soon as I go into Airport Utility to select Extend Wireless Network and fill in what I believe is proper information, I get an error message that Airport Extreme no longer has an IP address, the internet connection is broken, and under Wireless, that there is a wireless network in existence that can't be found. Rebooting the modem only brings the Airport Extreme back to the starting gate so that the internet is once again available.  I assumed (naively) that with the All Mac All-the-Time context, adding Airport Express would truly be Plug and Play.   I got the plug, but no play.  I asked a Comcast technical specialist about it and he said that I needed to reset the Airport Express settings back to their default, factory status.  I looked that process up online and found out that the way to do that was to hold down the reset button, then plug Airport Express into the socket and wait for the green light to flash four times.  Then wait 45 seconds and the default settings will return.  I did all that, only to find out that after the initial flash of green, green never appeared again.  I got a fast flashing yellow light, followed by the light going off.  Apparently this didn't reset it properly.  So, after hours trying to get this system to work, I appeal to someone who can see through this mess and provide the key to success!

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.
    Extreme, Express, Time Capsule

  • Having trouble bridging wired connection with Airport Express

I've had an Airport Express Base Station for a little while, really only using it to wirelessly print and stream my music.
I'm at my college now, and there's a campus wide wired network. I've been trying to bridge this network so I can wirelessly connect to the internet with my laptop, Nintendo DS and eventually Nintendo Wii. The problem is that I can only get the orange blinking light on the AEBS, I don't have the software that came with it (though I have the Airport Admin and Setup stuff under Utilities), and the computer doesn't seem to recognize the base station at all.
I'm an idiot, I'm pretty certain, but is there something easy I am overlooking here? Will an AEBS not bridge a wired network unless it's cable or DSL? I'm unclear on exactly what kind of network my college uses.
    thanks!

Most likely your college's network is providing NAT/DHCP services. I suggest that you set up your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "wireless bridge."
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, make these settings:
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    - Apply the new setting.
    - Wait at least 5 minutes.

  • Extend existing wireless network with airport express..impossible?

I have tried to extend my existing wireless network with an airport express, but it seemd that I always need a ethernetcable...apple support insured me it is possible but the airport utility software only allows me to extend using a cable it seems....

    Couple of thoughts here.......
The AirPort Express will only extend a wireless network if you have another Apple router providing the wireless network to be extended.
Is your "main" wireless router an Apple product?  If yes, what model number do you have?
It would also help if we could get the model number of the AirPort Express. Some older versions are not capable of extending a wireless network.

  • Extending Sky Wireless Network with Airport Express.

I spent most of last night trying to extend my Sky Wireless Network using an Apple Airport Express. The Apple Store salesman told me that it would be simple to set up but he's either wrong or I'm completely stupid!
Does anybody know if this is possible and if so, can they please advise me how I do this. (I am using Windows 7 on my Dell laptop)

I spent most of last night trying to extend my Sky Wireless Network using an Apple Airport Express. The Apple Store salesman told me that it would be simple to set up but he's either wrong or I'm completely stupid!
Unfortunately, the salesman may not have understood your question, or he may have given you incorrect information.
It's possible to have the AirPort Express provide more wireless coverage if you connect it using an ethernet cable permanently to your Sky router.
But, the AirPort Express cannot "extend" the wireless network produced by the Sky by connecting using wireless only. The "extend" feature will only work if you have an Apple to Apple wireless connection. This feature is not compatible with the products of other manufacturers.

  • Extending Snow wireless network with AirPort Express

I am trying to extend my existing Snow network with an AirPort Express, which I will connect to the Snow (through an unmanaged ethernet switch) via an ethernet cable. I think I know how to do this but if anyone has any hints, they would be appreciated.
In addition to using the AE as an "extender/wireless access point," can I also configure the system to stream AirTunes to the AE through the ethernet cable at the same time?
    Thanks

Oops, sorry I misread your post. That should work. Make sure that you disable the "Distribute IP addresses" option on the AX so that it acts like a wireless access point. On the AX, just enable the "Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port" option on the Music tab.

  • Extending the wifi signal with airport express

I tried to extend my network with a new apple express. My wireless internet service works from my older airport extreme base station, but the a window comes up that says "No base stations were found on "your network”. Choose a different network or go back.
Not sure why I can be connected wirelesslyto my network, but no base stations were found.

thanks for responding.  I've turned all off, then back on.  When I go to airport utility, this window comes up "
This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information.
Again, my computer is connected via wi-fi, yet the airport base station is not recognized.  Certainly, when airport utility is opended we have the symbol for internet showing, as well and the airport extreme connection with the correct network name.
the model S/N of the airport extreme is SNH53340C3NW2  Not sure which number the model number is..
    So, I tried this....
I took  my laptop and airport express into the room where the wireless airport extreme modem is, and configured the airport express from there.  Now the express shows on both computers.  But,  when I click on the extreme icon, it still says that airpot utility does not support this base station.  Does this matter at all?  Seems to me the system is not recognizing the express.
    thanks for your input!

  • Extend netgear dgn3500 range with airport express

    Hello all,
I would like to extend my network range ( router netgear dgn3500) with an airport express. Is it possible?
    Thank you!

I'm not sure if what I did extended the range, but I can play music from iTunes through connected speakers while connected to my Netgear WGR614v7 router (base).  I tried hardwiring both my Mac and another PC in the house to the express and the computers do not find the express.
Connect (I did it wirelessly) to the express.
In AirPort Utility, select manual setup.
Under wireless, select "Join a wireless network" as the wireless mode.
The Wireless Network Name should be the same as your Netgear router's name.
Wireless security should also be the same as the Netgear router.
Type in the password for the Netgear router.
    Select update.
After the AirPort Express reboots, connect to the Netgear router, and the express should still be listed in AirPort Utility.  This means it is connected to the Netgear router.  Now for the ultimate test.  See if it extends the wireless range.  If it doesn't work, it might be the router, since mine is a different model.
    Good Luck!

  • Difficulties with Airport Express and Printing

    Here's my situation:
I have a Time Capsule through which comes my internet access which is then sent around my house wirelessly. This is downstairs at the point where my phone line comes in. My computer (iMac) is upstairs, on the wireless network. Internet, Time Capsule backup etc. works fine. I have purchased an Airport Express which I wish to use to print with my printer (a HP- which is also upstairs nearby the computer) via USB rather than having the printer plugged via a USB connection in to my computer. I believe I have set up the AE properly, plugged in the printer via USB to it but it does not print.
So, what am I doing wrong ? I thought that the AE would be picking up whatever wireless signal is being sent out by both the computer and the Time Capsule and would pick up the instruction to print
So, have I got this all wrong ? If you've a similar set up and have worked it out, please give me the benefit of your experience !
    Thanks.

I just replaced my Airport Extreme and my expresses had to be reconfigured. I have done that and my express which is set up for being a part of my network as a USB hub for printing. Light is green and seen in my Airport Utility. However, when I go to print, it tells me "device is in use, waiting..." and never gets past that point. Any great thoughts about how to fix?

  • Extend wireless network with AirPort Express

How to extend the wireless network with AirPort Express and Belkin PlayMax as the primary router ?

  • Extend wireless range with Airport Express?

    Hi,
I am using a Time Warner internet wifi router and need to extend the range in my home.  Can anyone help me with how to extend the range using an Airport Express?
    Thanks
    Chris

Chris, are you planning to connect the AirPort Express to the Time Warner router using a wired Ethernet connection?
The reason we ask is that Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature to provide more wireless coverage....using wireless only.....works only with other Apple routers as far as we know.
It is almost certainly not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.

  • How do i use my time capsule and extend the network with airport express

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • Setting up a multi-zone stereo system in my home with Airport Express

I'm trying to set up an in-home stereo system using iTunes as my main hub.  I want to play iTunes as well as Pandora and possibly Sirius.  Can I set this up with Airport Express?  Would I control everything through iTunes on my MacBook or an iPad?  How is this all wired if I have some existing external speakers with a receiver in my family room, built-in ceiling speakers in the kitchen, and outdoor external speakers?  I am comparing this to a Sonos system, but the Sonos is not really in my budget.
Also, what is the difference between Airport Express and Airport Extreme?  What would I need for this situation?  Thanks in advance for your help.

    >I want to play iTunes as well as Pandora and possibly Sirius. Can I set this up with AirPort Express?
From iTunes you can stream a single audio source to one or multiple 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn), but you cannot stream multiple audio sources to separate AXns. You would need a third-party product, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil to stream audio sources other than from iTunes.
    >Would I control everything through iTunes on my MacBook or an iPad?
    You could do either.
    >How is this all wired if I have some existing external speakers with a receiver in my family room, built-in ceiling speakers in the kitchen, and outdoor external speakers?
Of the speakers you mentioned, only the ones connected to the receiver would work directly connected to an AXn. The audio output port on the AXn is a combo 3.5 mm stereo analog/optical digital port. Assuming your receiver accepts either analog or digital audio input, you can feed the output of iTunes or Airfoil from the AXn to the receiver. In turn, the receiver (if configured for whole home stereo) can feed the kitchen and outdoor speakers.
    >Also, what is the difference between AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme?
What's similar: Both are Internet routers that provide wireless. Both provide the ability to share an attached USB printer. What's different: The Extreme has a built-in Ethernet switch. The Extreme supports sharing HDDs and printers together or separately via a USB hub. The Express has a built-in audio circuitry, the Extreme does not.
    >What would I need for this situation?
Only the Express can accomplish providing an audio stream.
