Extending a wireless network n with an airport express g?

I have my wireless network set up using a first gen airport extreme n base station.i now need to extend my network with my airport express g. Is this possible? To use my g airport express on a wireless n network?

It's possible if you configure both AirPorts to "Participate in a WDS network".
The upside to this is that you will have more wireless coverage.
But the downsides are considerable:
WDS operates only in "g" wireless mode, so you would lose all "n" wireless capability of the AirPort Extreme
The bandwidth will be cut in half on the entire network. In effect, you will have a "g" wireless network running at half speed
WDS is difficult for most users to configure. It 's easy to make a mistake and hard to recover without starting all over again on the setup
I am not recommending WDS, but if you want to try it, Apple's instructions are here:

Should the Xbox not get all network infomation automatic
Do I need to manual set the xbox with Network settings?

I don't know if this link will help but, give it a shot. I have the same setup as you but, I have a PS2 instead. I believe you have to manually adjust some settings on the XBox.

Then, it sounds like you have already reset the 2nd Gen Express, and now you need to set it up again, like you did the first time. Only, this time, assign the device name that you want to the AirPort Express.
Do NOT use the name that Apple suggests.....which will be something goofy like........Sueswimsf's Red Apple AirPort Express

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Netgear router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few non-AirPort routers that are known to work are:
Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
BT Voyager 2091
Netgear WGR614 v6
Buffalo WGR-G54

Extending g wireless from Time Capsule using Airport Express...

Hi,
My Time Machine is working well and I have two old Airport Express units that I'd like to use as wireless extenders.
The Airport Expresses are the older type (i.e. only do 'g' wireless) and, according to the AirPort utility, they can't see the Time Capsule. My iPhone can connect OK so the 'g' network must be working.
Am I doing something wrong? Can I use my Airport Expresses to do this?

Thanks for the info. Your iPhone is connecting to the Time Capsule, not either of the AirPort Express devices.
In order to configure the AirPort Express devices to extend the wireless network, your Time Capsule Wireless Mode would need to be set to "Participate in a WDS network". You probably did not see this choice because it is "hidden". Hold down the "option" key on your computer while you click on the selection box to see if it appears.
I'm not necessarily suggesting that you try the WDS setup. It's an older technology that places a heavy bandwidth penalty on your wireless network in return for greater wireless coverage. The first Airport Express that you configure will cut the bandwidth of your network in half. The second will cut the bandwidth in half again. In other words, you are down to 50% of the original bandwidth with the first Express and down to only 25% with the second.
If you are getting acceptable wireless performance with the Time Capsule now, I would be tempted to leave well enough alone until you could add an AirPort Express "n" version, which would allow you to use the "extend a wireless network" setting. This is a much better performing arrangement and much easier to configure.
The WDS configuration is quite complex and frankly difficult for many users. To get an idea of the process, read over pages 42-44 in the Designing AirPort Networks Guide.
If you want to try this anyway, you will need reconfigure your Time Capsule and both Express devices to work in the WDS setup.

Extending wireless network through ethernet using airport express

I am running a wireless network using a time capsule. When attempting to setup an airport express, the utility first could not find the IP address. I went back and set the express to act as a bridge. It seemed to work correctly, however the express is not broadcasting a wireless signal or my Mac cannot see it. i have used the Utility for all of the setup. Both the time capsule and the express are new. The mac is running os10.5.8.

If your AirPort Extreme is connected to a modem (only one ethernet port on the device), then you need to configure the AirPort Extreme to handle both DHCP and NAT. This will be done for you automatically when you do the following:
Open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
If your AirPort Extreme is connected to a gateway (a combination modem and router that will have 3-4 ethernet ports), then you need to setup the AirPort Extreme as a "bridge"
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
All of your other devices...Time Capsule, AirPort Express must be configured as follows:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode = Your choice, but should be similar to the AirPort Extreme
Channel = Automatic*
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as AirPort Extreme
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings
* With a lot of devices, you may want to set the Channel manually. Set up separate channels for each device and keep the channels as far apart as possible.

Home wireless network in China using Airport Express ?

I am going to be living in China with my Macbook. I will be bringing my Airport Express with me.
I would like to know whether it is appropriate to connect up my Airport Express to a Chinese cable modem to obtain wireless internet access at home.
Or is it a very different system used in China for home wireless network.

Many, but not all of the same wireless channels in the US are allowed in China. See this Wikipedia Document for some information.
As to whether you will connect using ethernet or PPPoE, etc., that will depend on the provider that you choose.

Scan for wireless networks doesn't find Airport Express

Help please!
I've been trying for days to set up my Airport Express.
When I do the scan for wireless networks, my computer seems to find every network in my block of flats except my AX. I found it once or twice, and then used the AirPort Utility to do the setup. But then it lost the connection on restart. Now the AX connection is nowhere to be found.
Similarly, when I scan for AXs using AirPort Utility it finds nothing.
I don't think it's the AX that's the problem, because I have a wifi blackberry and when I scan for wireless networks on that it finds the AX (although it won't connect). And I don't see how it can be my computer (which is not a Mac) because it finds about 10 other networks.
What am I doing wrong? I'd be most grateful to anyone who could explain it to me in language a 2 year old could understand, because it's all a complete mystery to me.
I use a BT Home Hub for wireless internet, if that makes any difference.

If there are lots of other networks in the area you are probably getting a lot of RF interference.
Can I also add, the AX has relatively weak signal compare to some of the desktop wireless routers due to its size and small power source. If the interference is really a problem, AX might not be your best solution. You should consider upgrade the AX to something more powerful like the AEBS/n. Get the N version so you have a choice of moving your wireless network out of the crowded 2.4GHz band and move it into less populated 5GHz band.

My wireless network looses connection between airport express and modem.

The indicator under the "Internet" icon in airport utility switches from green to amber every minute or so. When it is amber I have no, or very slow speed.

Interestingly the Linksys WRT-54G is one of the few non-Apple routers that are WDS-compatible with the earlier 802.11g AirPorts. There are a number of posts on the Internet (use the following search terms: Linksys AirPort WDS) where the authors described how they configured theirs to work.
If; however, you don't want to "experiment," your suggestion to interconnect the two routers by Ethernet should work just fine. In this case, you would want to configure them both for a roaming network.

I´m trying to extent my network with an airport express 802.11g.
I´ve been fallowing the guide:

however, when I´m trying to configure the extended wifi base station ( point 8.) it won´t let me choose "extend a wireless network".
The only options I have is "create network", "join network" and "participate in a wds network".
I´ve been trying to find a solution all day.
Is there anyone out there who has hade the same problem or knows what it could be?

Unfortunately, the older AirPort Express 802.11"g" model does not have a setting to "extend a wireless network", so it cannot be used the way that you want.
The article that you reference should be clear about this:

You need to use one of the newer AirPort Express 802.11"n" models to gain the ability to "extend a wireless network".

Using Time Capsule to extend a wireless network

I have an office in the top of my house (2nd floor roof conversion) and as a result the wireless signal from the ground floor is very weak. i would like to boost the signal using my Time Capsule, placing it on the 1st floor, shortening the distance the signal has to travel.
Is this possible? In the AirPort settings I can seen an option to 'extend a wireless network using an ethernet cable' but if that is the only option I may as well just move my wireless home hub to the 1st floor.
Can the network be extended wirelessly?

Unfortunately, the "extend a wireless network" feature of the AirPort Express is only compatible with an Apple base station.
Therefore, you will not be able to use the TC to extend the wireless network that has been created by the BT Home Hub. You might check to see if BT offers an "extension device" or "remote" that would allow you to expand your wireless signal.
The TC will need to be configured to "Join" the wireless network that you have there.

Extending Sky Wireless Network with Airport Express.

I spent most of last night trying to extend my Sky Wireless Network using an Apple Airport Express. The Apple Store salesman told me that it would be simple to set up but he's either wrong or I'm completely stupid!

Unfortunately, the salesman may not have understood your question, or he may have given you incorrect information.
It's possible to have the AirPort Express provide more wireless coverage if you connect it using an ethernet cable permanently to your Sky router.
But, the AirPort Express cannot "extend" the wireless network produced by the Sky by connecting using wireless only. The "extend" feature will only work if you have an Apple to Apple wireless connection. This feature is not compatible with the products of other manufacturers.

I have three Mac computers/laptops (iMac, MacBook Air and G4 PowerBook), all currently functioning via airport on a sky wireless network (Sky HD Sagem router) all backing up wirelessly to a Time Capsule 1TB which is also connected to the same wireless Sky network. At the top of my house signal strength is weak as you would expect. I would like to be able to extend the range of the sky routers signal which is on the ground floor (3 storey house). My original idea had been to setup a AirPort Express on the 2nd floor to extend the network, but I am unsure what steps I have to follow and whether I need to create a WDS network or not? I've seen some comments that say Sky & Apple hardware are not compatible and it's not possible to extend a Sky router/wireless network using a Apple Airport Express or Time Capsule. Can someone provide me with a step by step set of instructions on what I need to do to set this up? If a work around is required, again any advice would be very much appreciated!

Sky and Apple products are not compatible for the purpose of extending your network using wireless only.
If you could connect an ethernet cable from your Sky router to the AirPort Express, or if it's not possible to run an ethernet cable...take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the AC wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.
If you configure the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network", this would in effect, extend your network by adding an AirPort Express that would be configured with the exactly the same wireless network name, security settings and password as your Sky router. The AirPort Express would also need to be configured as a "bridge".
Post back if you need more details about something like this.

Trouble extending my wireless network via (4) Airport Express'

I am having difficulty extending my wireless network - I have a Airport Extreme as the base station - I was hoping to daisy chain the express devices throughout the home but I'm losing signal strength as I get further away from the base... is it possible to link each device so that i can have one network running with multiple Airport Express' wirelessly? Any help you can provide would be appreciated...

If you have the newer AirPort Extreme 802.11n and newer AirPort Express 802.11n devices, it is not possible to "daisy chain" the AirPort Express devices. That's because each AirPort Express communicates directly to the "main" AirPort Extreme....not to another AirPort Express.
The "extend" setup is like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your AirPort Exrreme is the "hub" and each AirPort Express resides at the end of a "spoke".
The "best" way to extend any wireless network is to run Ethernet cabling to the location of each AirPort Express. If it is not possible to run the Ethernet cable, your next option would be Ethernet power line adapters to send an Ethernet signal over the AC power lines in your home.
