Extending Airport Extreme N 5ghz with Express 5ghz

I have a last generation Airport Extreme (has N 5ghz but not dual band) set in N 5ghz that I would like to extend with a current generation N Airport Express. I setup the Extreme on 5ghz, hid the SSID, and allowed it to be extended. When I go to setup the Express to extend the Extreme network, it will say that the configuration updates have been saved, but it never finds the Express after it has restarted. The Express continues to have the Amber light flashing after restart.
Any ideas?

I suggest starting over. Please give the following instructions a try ...
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

Extend Airport Extreme 802.11g with Airport Express 802.11n

I bought a new AE 802.11n and I want to extend my network from my old Airport Extreme 802.11g. I can't figure out how to do this.

Unfortunately, the newer "n" AirPorts and older "g" AirPorts are not compatible if you are trying to configure the AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" using wireless only.
The "extend a wireless network" function and feature is only found on newer "n" AirPorts.
If you can connect the AirPort Express to the older AirPort Extreme using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, it is possible to configure the Express to provide more wireless coverage that way.
Using an older, very difficult setup called WDS, it might be possible to configure the Express using wireless only, but the end result would be a network that provides only half the speed of your older "g" AirPort Extreme, so this is definitely not recommended due to the severe performance drop that will occur on the network.

Hm, this is starting to go into a direction I don't really like.
I also bought latest Airport Express 11n, which I have not used so far, while looking into this issue with AEBS. While writing previous post regarding Airport Extreme, I figured that I can use the Express to check is the 11n on AEBS working.
I connected it in, setup and went for "extend wireless network" option. And lo-and-behold, 11n wireless network was visible in the drop-down.
So the 11n on Aiport Extreme is working fine. The issue seems to be with the laptop itself.
This MBP should have 11n enabled by default. I checked in Network Utility as described in Apple Store page about 11n enabler, and I do see this for en1 network interface:
Model: Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g/n)
So, it should mean I'm all set and ready. And that might mean that airport card in my MBP is faulty. :((
Anyone has ideas what to try, apart from going for replacement?

Connect MacbookPro and AirPort Extreme via 5Ghz channel

- Macbook Pro 13" 2012 year (802.11n wi-fi standart)
- iPad mini with Retina 2013 year (802.11n wi-fi standart)
- Airport Extreme 2013 year (with support 802.11ac wi-fi standart)
By default, a macbook device connected to the channel 2.4Ghz. Connection speed is set 217 Mbit/sec. If you divide the channels 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz, then the connection speed to 450 Mbit/sec on channel 5Ghz.
How to configure AirPort Extreme when macbook and iPad was connected to the AirPort using 5Ghz channel by default?

As a result we have bad results in tests 2-4. Particularly upset that Airport Extreme loses Asus N66U on test results. If I change regional setting to RU (Russian), results does not change:

This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection.

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer about what I'm intending to do, so I thought I'd ask the experts. Here is my setup:
I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n with firmware rev 7.4.2. It's configured to support 802.11b/g compatibility out of necessity due to a few older wireless clients in the house. I've locked it down with MAC address access control, WPA2 Personal encryption and have it as a closed network to keep it out of the eyes of neighbors that might be casually browsing local wireless networks. My DSL modem has multiple ethernet ports and the Airport Extreme is configured to use it using a manually configured internal LAN IP. DHCP is running off my Airport Extreme rather than from my DSL router, but everything but the Wii has hardcoded IP's in my house. I run my iPhone, an older MacBook Pro, my wife's MacBook and a Wii off of it without any issue. My PowerMac G5 is also on it, but is dual-homed to a wired ethernet connection since the DSL router is in my office along with the base station and my PowerMac.
Now, what I would like to be able to do is set up an Airport Express in my media room, run the Airtunes optical port out to my A/V receiver's optical port and then run the ethernet port on the Airport Express to an ethernet Mini-Hub that would then distribute IP's to my A/V receiver, PS3 and Dish receiver (and eventually a Mac-Mini but that's another story for another time. ).
What I am having trouble finding any kind of real confirmation on is whether the Airport Express will allow porting out to a mini-hub and distributing IP addresses to my components in my media room so that they have internal LAN and internet access. I know the Extreme will do this, but solid info on the Express has been hard to come by. So...I'm hoping someone here will have some helpful insight.

You have two options if you use an AirPort Express 802.11n
1) You can configure the device to "join" your current wireless network and tick the box in AirPort Utility setup to "enable ethernet clients". This will activate the ethernet port. The Express will act as a "bridge". Control of DHCP and NAT will be at the AirPort Extreme. In effect, the Express becomes another LAN port of the AirPort Extreme.
2) If you need a bit more wireless coverage in the area where the Express will be located, you can configure it to "extend a wireless network". It will broaden your "main" wireless network and the ethernet is automatically enabled in this setting. It is also a "bridge" in this configuration, so like above, it functions as an extended LAN port of the AirPort Extreme.

You asked if the network could be wirelessly extended and that is what I replied to.

Problems extending Airport Extreme network

I am sure this must have been covered but I can't find it here, and feel a bit foolish asking this, but I bought a new AE base station (the new flat 'n' variety).
I set up my network fine (I have a Netgear wireless router connected to MacPro with AE card). I also have (1) an older flying saucer AE base station and (2) an Airport Express. I want to boost my signal so the whole house can get a good signal. However, when I try to add 1 or 2 I am told it can't be done because "this computer does not have an Airport Extreme card" (it does!). I have obviously done something wrong because 1 and 2 show up in the network as if they are networks (they have the default names like "Apple Network e371b8" but obviously they have no Internet access. I have tried this several ways today and failed every time. Should I give 1 and 2 the same name as the main network so only a single name shows up in the network list??
Can someone who has successfully extended their network using the new style AE + older flying saucer AE +/- Express please tell me what settings they used?

Do NOT install AirPort 802.11n Firmware 7.1
This Firmware 7.1 update for AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n should definitely NOT be installed.
Here was my problem:
I used AirPort Utility 5.1 to install the update. It is automatic - launch the utility and it asks if you want to install the update. I said yes because I had problems getting two AirPort n base stations networking together to extend my range (I gave up finally and just used an AirPort Express to extend the range).
After the firmware update, some sites would not load at all (www.nytimes.com) and others took forever to load. And worse, I could not send any email from any of my IMAP accounts. It seemed to be a DNS problem.
I have two 802.11n AirPorts, so I finally went back to the other one (7.0) and everything worked fine. The Apple tech support guy offered to replace my broken (7.1) AirPort.
Foolishly, I wanted to make sure the problem was actually with the 7.1 update and not the AirPort itself. So I updated my second 802.11n base station with 7.1. And it casued the exact same problem (some sites not loading, no outgoing email).
The Apple tech (at this point I was speaking with a wireless specialist) put me on hold to test a few of his AirPorts to see if he could revert back to firmware 7.0 or (ii) install a clean version of 7.1 (in case the version on my drive was corrupted).
Unfotunately neither option was possible, which is a design flaw in AirPort Utility.
Apple is sending me two new AirPorts in 1-2 days, which is great service, but I will not be installing firmware update 7.1 again. Fool me once...

Setting up Time Capsule, Airport Extreme, and old AP Express...

Question regarding setting up a wireless network in the home.
I currently have the following Apple wireless networking products:
Time Capsule - Model A1254
Airport Extreme - Latest model
Airport Express - Model A1084 (older model unit)
I also have a Verizon router with wireless capabilities.
I am trying to provide wireless coverage throughout my entire home. The Verizon router is in the basement, and I have the wireless portion turned off.
I have ethernet running to my office on the first floor from the Verizon router in the basement as well as ethernet running to the second floor. In my office I put the Time Capsule, while the Airport Extreme is on the second floor.
Since both the Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme have ethernet providing their internet connection, I am curious to know what is the best way to set them up to provide wireless support to laptops.
Should they both be configured with the same SSID but with different channels? Should they be configured with different SSIDs? What settings will provide the most seamless (Apple-like) experience? What will provide the best bandwidth?
Lastly, should I set up the Airport Express with WDS? Should I ditch it altogether since it bottlenecks the performance of the WDS main router?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, if you want one "large" network. A laptop could "roam" around the house and automatically pick up the strongest signal.
No, if you want two separate wireless networks. In this case, you would need to switch networks depending on the location of your laptop in relation to the nearest router.
Make sure both the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme are configured with their Connection Sharing setting to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
The ethernet backbone on your network will provide for the best possible bandwidth...much better than if you try to extend using wireless only.

Ideally, you would set the AirPort Express up the same as the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme...using ethernet to the AirPort Express. WDS will kill your bandwidth on the wireless network, cutting it in half. If you can't connect the AirPort Express using ethernet, you will probably be much better off simply not using it.

New Airport Extreme not working with my Quad Macpro

Hi all-
My Linksys 902.11b router finally died and our household is now completely Mac-based (all with Airport Extreme cards), so I decided to take the plunge and get an Airport Extreme.
2 of the machines on my home's network are doing fine with the router and are getting good speeds - iMac Dual 2.4 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine / Macbook Dual 2.0 (10.5.1) - Both the wired and wireless connections are solid with this machine as well.
I have a Macpro Quad 2.66 machine running 10.4.11. I cannot upgrade to 10.5 yet on this machine since it's being used in my recording studio business and there are known issues with some of my apps and 10.5 at the moment.
The Quad can see the network and has seemingly strong signal from the Airport Extreme BS, but DHCP reception is inconsistent (the machine often eds up using a self-assigned IP for some reason) and IP connectivity in general is inconsistent, even when an appropriate static LAN IP is manually setup. I can often get to a few webpages while using a manually config'd IP, but only with very slow DL speeds and then the connection quickly disappears and drops out entirely.
The AExtreme is setup like this: DSL Modem-->Airport Extreme (config'd with a static IP from my ISP) -->DHCP broadcast dummy IP's to my network. Currently I've not setup any security since I'm in the process of troubleshooting and I don't want to further complicate the situation. Radio-mode on the AExtreme is set to 802.11n (b/g compatible)/Channel 1. I've tried numerous config setups on the AExtreme, but none have helped the situation.
I've also disabled IPv6 on all clients per some reading on the forums of possible issues.
Anyone know what the problem might be? Is it perhaps an issue because the Macpro's using 10.4.11?
FYI, I've also also got an extra Airport Express around that's not being used that could be used as a repeater/wired connection downstairs if broadcast strength is the issue, which seems somewhat unlikely to me. I'm not sure how to config the AExpress to work in this capacity though, so if anyone could point me to a tutorial I'd appreciate it very much.

I just did some more testing using an app mentioned here on the forums, iStumbler. The app offered these details:
- Signal Strength is between 45%-56%
- Noise is between 24%-41%
- Freq = 2412
- No websites load despite it's seeing the router and saying we've joined it.
I also did a screen capture of the iStumbler's screen in case that's helpful. There were several bits of info I wasn't sure about.

AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem not recognized by airport utililty,

My Apple M8799LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station with Modem and Antenna Port is no longer recognized by the airport setup utility, nor will it allow internet connection. Has worked fine until last weekend when I did a full disk utility on all of my drives. Now I get a message, none of your trusted networks are available would I like to join (my network name)? Airport looks fine, can connect locally, lights up as usual.

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
Read up the issue.

I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.

Hi! I had luck here before, so I'm hoping I can find luck again! I'm with my folks, who run a Dell Desktop with WIndows XP Home Edition with cable modem, my Airport Extreme running wireless with my Macbook (listed) and an older than old dell notebook with a wireless card. It has been running fine for the last year.
Now, the new problem: My parents upgraded their phone to digital- so for the first week or so, every time the phone rang, I lost wireless- I presume from interference. On Monday, I was online, and was abruptly cut off. I was not able to get on again for the rest of the day. As sometimes the cable goes out- I didn't think much of it. Until the next day when I couldn't get back online, and the dell desktop could not get on either. My father called in to TW who walked him through several different solutions- none of which gave me wireless. I'm left with an old dell desktop to work on- (I'm a mac girl- I'm going insane). I need the stuff on my macbook- job applications to be sent, book writing for uploads- and my sanity back. Is it possible my Airport Extreme went? Is it the modem itself? Is it the wireless phone interference? My mac will show it can see the network- but can't connect to the internet- Any help at all will be greatfully accepted!

What is the make/model of the new modem?
Since it sounds like your parents now have VoIP as their phone service, it might more likely be a bandwidth issue as opposed to a Wi-Fi interference issue that you are seeing. This would make sense since the Dell desktop is not able to connect to the Internet either.
One thing to try is to perform a complete power recycle of all the network components to see if this resolves the issue of connectivity. The simpliest method would be to first power everything off. Then, starting with the modem, power it back on; wait 10 - 15 minutes, and then, power-up the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS); wait 5 - 10 minutes. Finally, power on the computers.
