Extending extreme model A1034 with express model A1264, Extending extreme model A1034 with express model A1264

I am trying (unsuccessfully) to extent an Airport Extreme model A1034 (old!) with an Airport Express model A1264.
I am using Airport Utility 5.5.3 on a Powerbook G4.
Any suggestions on how to do this?
Alan

Before configuring for a WDS, there are a couple of things that you should be aware of:
A WDS can only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode. This, effectively, negates the advantage of your 802.11n AirPort.
For every base station added to the WDS, the overall bandwidth is cut in half. Starting with a potential maximum of 54 Mbps (802.11g), with two base stations, you will be getting something like 25-27 Mbps tops.

  • Extending an Airport Extreme (6th Gen) network with older Airport Express models

I just purchased the latest Airport Extreme (6th Gen) base station to be my main wifi router.  I have two airport express models that I used in the past to extend my network with my (very) old retired Airport Extreme (2nd Gen): the 2nd Gen model A1264 (you plug into the wall directly) - I've had it for several years, and the newest 3rd Gen model A1362 (small square that lies on a desk or table) - I just purchaed a couple of months ago.
My question is - will extending my network with either of these Airport Express models diminish my overall network speed (Especially the older model)?
I don't have any AC capable clients yet - so everything is running on the "n" band - and the older Express is an "n" model, but I just have this (perhaps irrational) fear that attaching older routers will slow everything down.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks!

will extending my network with either of these Airport Express models diminish my overall network speed (Especially the older model)?
The A1264 model will be able to extend only one band of the new dual band AirPort Extreme. Normally, the A1264 will extend the 2.4 GHz band since it is stronger than the 5 GHz signal.
The A1392 will be able to extend both bands since it is also a dual band model, providing that it is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the new AirPort Extreme.
Here, I am assuming that you are asking about extending wirelessly.
You might want to keep in mind that extending wirelessly always involves compromises and loss of bandwidth. The main reason for this is that an extending device can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives.
The wireless signal from the new AirPort Exterme will slow down and lose strength the further that it moves away from the main AirPort. So, the extending device gets a slower, weaker signal to extend. The result is signficantly slower wireless performance in the extended areas.
The way to solve this is connect the extending AirPorts to the main AirPort using a permanent wired Ethernet connection.  There is no signal loss in a wire, so the extending AirPort receives a full bandwidth signal to broadcast. The result is higher and more uniform speed on the entire network.

  • Extending a Gen 5 Extreme with an early model Express

I have been running a Gen 2 Extreme with a WDS extension setup for my early model 802 a/b/g Express.  When I replaced my Gen 2 Extreme with the newest Gen 5, the Airport Utility screens have changed and don't appear to offer options to identify my Express as an extention.
Need some thoughts on how to deal with this.
    Thanks

The key is to use the Option key before making the Wireless Mode selection for the 5G AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). You should find the familar "Participate in a WDS network" option when you do.
You should be aware that there are two major drawbacks of using this earlier "static" WDS configuration:
The extended network will only operate in the 802.11g radio mode. Effectively, negating the advantage of your new AEBSn.
For every base station added to the WDS, the overall bandwidth will be cut in half. So, in your case, you'll only be getting around 25 - 27 Mbps. A far cry short of the 300+ Mbps that the AEBSn is capable of.

  • Extending network with Airport Express and Airport Extreme (latest models) causes chaos on network

Today I upgraded from my several year old Airport Extreme (3rd gen) and 2nd gen Airport Express to a new (what you'd buy on the shelf today) Airport Extreme and Airport Express.  All airports are updated with the latest firmware and I'm using windows 7 for configuration.
The intention is to use the Airport Extreme as the main router, also serving wifi. And extend the network using the express. As such, the following has been done:
The Airport Extreme is configured for automatic channel, and automatic radio mode. I tried to select 802.11n 5 ghz and 802.11 n 2.4 ghz only, but it won't take the changes. Additionally, it wont' accept me using only channel 6. Not sure why, but I digress. The airport extreme is not set to broadcast a separate name for the 5ghz network.
The Airport Express is configured to use bridge mode, use an existing wireless network and is connected to my network on it's WAN port (the circle icon on the back) with ethernet. The password and wireless name used in configuration is the same as created initially on the Airport Extreme.
Initially I did the configuration of both airports on my computer, connected by ethernet to ensure stable connectivity while I inputted settings. During this, they appeared to accept the changes fine. However, when I moved the airport express to it's destination (other side of my house), the entire network went crazy.
Internet became slow, and often wouldn't load pages. This was on wired and wireless connections. When I attempted to administer the Airport in the Utility, they would not load, an error would occur. Also, at one point the Airport Extreme had renamed it self with a (2) at the end. Which was super odd. So far, the only solution has been to unplug the Airport Express and attempt to devise a solution.
Anyone have any ideas? Of course, I will continue to tinker with this, but it seems realllly strange. The previous setup was also extended (granted, using wireless only, not ethernet > wireless) and worked fine, granted it was a smidge slow, but it worked.

I wanted to add this.. I followed the guide here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260 to extend using ethernet, and the above is the result.
I just tried re configuring in OS X Mavericks and got the same, odd, result.

  • Cannot configure and connect to Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64)

I am not able to connect Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64).  I did a factory reset, uninstalled and reinstalled the AirPort Utility for Windows v. 5.6.1.
My objective is to extend a non-Apple WiFi network with Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 and use it for direct ethernet and/ or wireless connection.  Any guidance as to how I can get set up here?

This is very common, we run a mix of mac and various pc brand desktops and laptops, what I have found is that using the windows wireless client rather than manufacturers on some laptops helps, getting the latest wireless drivers from the manufacturer has helped, make sure all your windows updates XP and Vista are current.
If all the above is covered try the different WEP WPA WPA2 variants or even without for test purposes. I have most success with WPA2.
Finally I am assuming your running the latest firmware on the express unit, whilst this hasn't attributed to better connectivity for us I did it regardless.

  • Extend Airport Extreme (n) to Airport Express (g) old model

I have and older model Airport Express (b/g) that I want to use to extend my new Airport Extreme (n). I'm having some difficulties doing that and wonder if anyone has any tip for me. The problem is the last part when a text box said
"Please select the Apple wireless device you want to join from the list. It may take a few seconds for your device to appears." (http://www.iclarified.com/images/tutorials/963/4656/4656.png) appears, no base station come up for me to select.
Another concern is, using (b/g) network to extend, will that change my existing network (n) to become (b/g)?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the discussion area, ATP015!
Another concern is, using (b/g) network to extend, will that change my existing network (n) to become (b/g)?
Before you spend a good deal of time trying to configure a WDS arrangement...which is a somewhat difficult type of setup...you might want to review the upsides and downsides of a WDS setup.
The upside is that it will provide more wireless network coverage for your network.
    The downsides are considerable:
    1) Since WDS is a "g" wireless technology, the entire wireless network will drop down to "g" levels, so you lose any advantage of having an "n" wireless router
    2) With the addition of a remote device, the bandwidth on the entire network will drop by half
So, the bottom line with WDS is that while you'll have more wireless coverage, you'll have a "g" wireless network that is operating at 50% of its capability.
If you want to try to configure the WDS setup, the best instructions that I've seen were posted by forum expert Tesserax in this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2641670&tstart=0
If you can consider a new AirPort Express 802.11n, you will be able take advantage of Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature. This will provide "n" level performance on your network with minimum bandwidth loss...and...its much easier to configure.

  • Express 802.11n model A1264 not compatible with Mountain Lion?

I have an airport Express 802.11n model A1264.  I have been using  it with Mountain Lion for a couple of months.  Some problems but it worked.  Last nite it stopped. - flashing orange light.  I am using Airport Utility version 6.1.  The helpful? lady at apple support said that model of Airport Express (Gen 1 ) was not compatable with Mountain Lion and I need to get a Generation 2 Airport Express.  Is there any other solution?

Hardware failure is a possibility but your Express is most certainly compatible with your version of Mac OS X.
    weaversue wrote:
...  I had pushed in the reset button on the AU Express -
To properly reset it to factory defaults requires that you depress its reset button continuously for about five seconds - long enough for the LED to flash rapidly, then release it.
After this the Express will create an open wireless network called "Apple Network nnnnnn" where nnnnnn = a set of characters unique to your Express.
Connect to that network by selecting it in the menu.
Launch AirPort Utility. It should find the Express.
If you are still having trouble unplug the Express and plug in to an electrical outlet near your iMac. Not only does this make it easier to perform another "hard reset" should you need to, it minimizes the potential for wireless interference to prevent communication. There is no need to have it connected to your modem as you configure it.
Only after doing all this should you begin to suspect the Express has simply failed. In that case bring it back to Apple for a final determination.
Don't let them tell you it is not compatible with Mountain Lion because I use the exact same one all the time. Even its preceding model is compatible.

  • New iPhone &iPad 2 working with Extreme Base Station Model A1034

iPad 2 worked with Extreme Base Station Model A1034. Now new iPhone and now neither can connect to the Base Station. What could be the reason for the iPad 2 to stop working with the Base Station and why can't the iPhone use the Base Station? Thank you!

At this point are you saying that none of your wireless clients can connect to the AirPort? If so, then I would recommend that you do the following:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Extending extreme gen5 network with previous gen4 model

I just got a new airport extreme gen.5 to replace my gen.4. I am using the gen.4 to extend my network, but does it extend the 5Ghz capability of the gen.5?
Any help would be very much appreciated. I'm not sure if when choosing "5Ghz" in the airport extrem (4) section of the house if I am connecting to the hardware in the other room or does the airport 4 simply serve as a network door...kinda like the phone booth in the matrix

In order to extend both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, the 5th Generation AirPort Extreme must be configured to use the same wireless network for both bands....which is the default setting for the Extreme.
Or, stated another way, if you have enabled the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz network on the 5th Generation Extreme, you must disable that option to allow the 4th Generation Exteme to "extend" both bands correctly.
Then configure the 4th Generation AirPort Extreme to "extend a wireless network" and select the wireless network name of the 5th Generation Extreme.
Since the 5th Generation Extreme is sending signals on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands using the same wireless network name......and.....the 4th Generation is extending that same network, both bands will be extended by the 4th Generation Extreme.  This assumes of course that the 4th Generation Exteme is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal form the 5th Generation device.

  • Can i use my airport utility on my ipad 2 to extend my extreme network with an express?

can I use my ipad 2 to extend my extreme network with an express

Yes, you can.....assuming you are asking about an 802.11ac AirPort Extreme and a new AirPort Express or the previous version model A1264.
But, the Express will not extend the "ac" signal from the AirPort Extreme, since it has no "ac" capability. It will only extend the normal "b/g/n" wireless signal.
That is going to create quite a slow down on the entire "b/g/n" network if you are planning to have the Express connect using wireless. It would be much better if you could connect the Express using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection back to the AirPort Extreme.

  • I need the the latest firmware for Airport Extreme Model A1034 (M8799LL/A)

    Hello everybody:
I want to flash my Airport Extreme Model A1034(M8799LL/A)with the latest firmware available..
    My Airport have a internal modem , 1 Wan , 1 Ethernet & 1 USB ports
I checked some firmware updates, but I am not sure what is the correct update ..
I don't want to ruin my Airport for flashing the Airport with the wrong update ..
I only have Windows Xp computers ,, I need a Mac to do it ?
Please somebody help me to find the update ,,
    Thanks in advance ,,

Do you know if this is still the case? (Version 5.7 is still the latest available for the 802.11g version of the AirPort Extreme Base Station).
I'm a little confused after the release of AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Windows:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportbasestationupdate2007002forwindows .html
It clearly states that "AirPort Utility v5.2.1 software supports the AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n, AirPort Extreme Base Station and AirPort Express Base Station." But then if you read the System Requirements it says that you need:
    * Windows XP with Service Pack 2
    * Windows Vista
    * AirPort Utility 5.0 or later
    * AirPort Extreme Base Station with *802.11n*
So what is the latest version for the 802.11g version of the AirPort Extreme Base Station?
    Thanks

  • I have bought a TC to extend the range of the wireless network in the house and would like someone to explain the best way to do this? My combine router/modem is supplied by Movistar(in Spain) model Xavi 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports.

What is the best way to extend my wireless network in the house using a TC? I currently use a combined router/modem supplied by Movistar(live in Spain) model XAVI 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports. What is the best configuration and can you explain what is meant by bridging and which is best to bridge for signal strenght TC or Xavi modem/router? Have ipads, iphones, apple tv...etc and want a connection them all in the whole house which, not just downstairs, to our wireless network.

You cannot wireless bridge Apple to non-apple router.. so that is out.
The only way you can do this is run ethernet or EOP adapters.. and place the TC in a location where the other apple idevices can reach it.
If you want to repeat wireless with apple routers you have to use another apple router next to the modem.. plugged in an running as an AP.
Basically the TC is the wrong piece of equipment unless you want Time Machine backups.. take it back and buy a universal repeater.. not apple. Or buy more apple stuff like an extreme or express.. one apple router is useless to you without running ethernet.

  • Multiple SSID network; 1 Extreme (current gen) + 3 Express (2011 models)

Hi, I'm looking to set up an Wireless network using Multiple SSID's (Business and Guest) using one airport extreme and three Airport Expresses.
Are the Airport Expresses capable of bridging multiple ssids or extending multiple ssids?
What's the best practice on setting this up?
    Regards,
    Mike

By default, the AirPort Extreme will provide a simultaneous dual band signal for the "main" network, with both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands using the same wireless network name. You could think of this as your Business network.
Wireless devices will connect to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band based on their capabilities and distance from the AirPort Extreme.
For example, most iPhones can only connnect to 2.4 GHz, so that is where they will connect. A newer laptop will be able to connect to either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
5 GHz signals are faster, but much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so the 5 GHz signals tend to be pretty much a line-of-sight or close proximity type of connection. In other words, if a laptop is in cloxe proximity to the AirPort Extreme, it will likely connect to the 5 GHz band. If the laptop moves a few rooms away, it will likey connect to the 2.4 GHz band.
The AirPort Extreme does have an option to enable a Guest Network......IF.....you plan to connect the AirPort Extreme to a simple modem....not a modem/router or gateway type of device.
If you are not sure what you have, post back with the make and model number of your "modem". If you do not have the right type of modem, you will not be able to configure a Guest Network.
Important.....the Guest Network cannot be extended. The signal will only be produced by the AirPort Extreme.
I assume that you want to use the Express devices to "extend" the signal using wireless only.
Since the AirPort Express models that you have are not simultaneous dual band devices, they will be able to extend one band of the AirPort Extreme's wireless signal. In most cases, the Express will extend the 2.4 GHz band, since it is the stronger signal.
Each AirPort Express connects to the AirPort Extreme's signal, so each AirPort Express will need to be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
It would be better if you could connect each AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection. This would allow you to locate each AirPort Express exactly where it will be needed.

  • Model A1088 Express with Airport Exteme

Hi all, I've got an Airport Express Model A1088, which I want to use in conjunction with an Aiprport Extreme router to extend my wirelss signal to another part of the residence. I d/l the manual for the device, but as is always the case in all things wireless I can't get my head around how to do the settings. I once used Applecare to help and it got *very* complicated, so much that all I really did was the typing while the operator did the figuring out.
All that is gone - I'm on Lion, I've changed my modem, and now all I get it the amber light on the Express. I can't find it in the system either, so can't get any further. Is there a kind soul out there who might help me to get connected? This time I'll make sure I save the details in case I have future problems. As a guide, I used the Express initially to stream iTunes to mt sound system and it worked great. I assume that making changes for it to work with the Extreme might have wiped out those settings. But what would I know .
TIA for any assistance received. I really would like to use computers in the other area of the house. Thanks.

simply push and hold the RESET button on Airport Express for ~10 second, the Airport Express will be reset.
Search WIFI network and find a network with SSID: "Apple Network xxxxxx", the last 6 digits of SSID is the last 6 digits of MAC address of your Airport Express router.
After you are connected to this reseted Airport Express, you can use Airport Agent to modify the settings again.

  • Extending range of Airport Extreme (old round model)

    Hi,
I have 2 airport extreme base stations (old model - round ones). I have set one as a Main on WDS network and the other as a Remote. However, it does not seem to be working. I have followed the instructions given here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262
    But it is not working.
Now, Airport Utility (5.6.1 is the only one that works with these stations) does not even display the second base station.
Is there a step by step document that explains how to set such a network up? Or could someone take me step by step through the process?
Thank you very much for your help.

I would bring the Expresses to the room where you have your Extreme and factory reset the Expresses so that they are in the original condition when they came out of the box - they will reflect their Apple IDs.
I would then open the Airport Utility (I am assuming you have the new Extreme, not the old one). Scan for the Expresses and then join them to the network.
If they work in the room where your Extreme is located then they are configured appropriately. They I would try moving them back to the room where you want to extend your network. If they then do not work you will know it is not the Express but the amount of concrete and metal in your building.
