  • Extending my desktop across 2 (DVI) displays from 15" MacBook Pro Retina

Hi. I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro Retina a few days ago and am trying to connect 2 Dell displays with a view to extending my desktop across them both. At the Apple shop I was told I simply needed to buy 2 Thunderbolt to DVI converters (my 2 displays both have DVI out) and hook them up... Not true. If I try this my desktop only extended across 1 display. The other display isn't even picked up by my MacBook Pro.
So does anyone out there know how I connect 2 DVI displays to my MacBook Pro without buying a Matrox Dual Link? If I bought an HDMI to DVI converter cable and connected one display via the HDMI port, and the other display via the thunderbolt port, would this work?

May not be an upgrade issue ..
You have a fast processor. and 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient.  (The processor cannot be replaced)
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the system down.
If your Mac seems to running slower, try the suggestions here > Mac troubleshooting: What to do when your computer is too slow | Macworld
If you have not done so, especially with school files stored on the hard drive, make sure to back up your important data on a timely basis.  Help here >  Mac Basics: Time Machine
Not a good idea to post the serial number of your Mac on the net. I have asked the moderators to edit that information for you. It has nothing to do with upgrading.

  • Video Mirroring / Extending the desktop

I have a 12" iBook G3 800mhz dual usb and have just bought a Samsung TFT 17" which works fine and plugged straight in using the apple adapter. I wanted to extend the desktop to have palettes etc. on the laptop screen, then use the 17" for the file window. Is this possible at all on an ibook, or do I need a new graphics card or something? any help appreciated

You really need a PowerBook to do screen spanning. There is a software hack that will enable you to do it, but it is not recommended by Apple, and can endanger your iBook (i.e., kill it dead). I RECOMMEND THAT YOU NOT DO THIS. I don't usually even post the link.

  • Am I able to extend the desktop when a 27" display is attached to my IMAC 27"

Am I able to extend the desktop when I use a 27" IMAC and a 27" extra display?

    Hi Donald,
Go to System Preferences > Displays > and you should see two different windows, one for your iMac's display and one for the extra display. Click on the one for the extra display. Click on the Arrangement tab at the top. In the lower left corner, uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays" and it should go to extended desktop. You may also wish to check the box for Show displays in menu bar if you need to access the Displays pref frequently.

  • Is it possible to extend my desktop to another screen wirelessly?

    Hi Guys,
Is it possible to extend my desktop from my macbook pro to a second display unit in my room which will be wall mounted? Obviously this is possible with a cable, but I wonder if it can be done wirelessly and with what kit.
    TIA.
    Ravi

Well you need a graphics card to drive the large monitor and I don't think there is a wireless setup fast enough to stream video in HD like that.
Even if there was there would be a whole bunch of honking equiptment next to your precious.
What you can do is get a Mac Mini or another Mac that can drive that large monitor with the resoluton you need and then use Apple Remote Desktop to control the Mac Mini from across the room. Order itunes movies and so forth.
You see the Mac Mini's screen on your MacBookPro's desktop screen and can control it pretty much in real time on a fast LAN.

  • How can i extend the desktop of my retina Macbook using an ATV?

    Hey,
i know i had this working before, but i was using the developer preview of mavericks in that time. So is it possible?( or is it even a feature that comes with mavericks?) and if so: how would i do it?
i'm only offered the option to mirror the screen currently.
    Any help would be great.
    15" rMBP

It's an announced feature that will come with OS X Mavericks > http://www.apple.com/osx/preview
Until then, a third-party app can extend your desktop to your Apple TV, like AirParrot > http://www.airsquirrels.com/airparrot/

  • Extending the desktop

     Hello-
This is my first visit/post here, and I am hoping that someone can help me!
I am running Windows XP, with the G4MX440-T card.
I do a LOT of work in photoshop, and in the intrest of streamlining my work area, I have attempted to extend my desktop with a used (but working!)$1.99 color monitor, and a ($9.00)VGA splitter. So far, my investment in $ is reasonable ) , however my frustration level is not ;( .
I was told by several folks theoretically in the know, that this should work, but no luck!!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks--Frank

    Hi Frank,
A VGA splitter will only split a single input into two or more identical outputs - so you'll get the same picture on both monitors.
What you need is two separate VGA outputs - either a "dual-head" video card, or if the motherboard has onboard video, you can use that (you may need to enable it in BIOS). It's probably best to use the graphics card output for your main photoshop display, and the on-board output for the old monitor (although it may be useful if that is designated as the "primary" output, and you open photoshop on the "secondary" monitor).
    Hope this helps,
    Mike

You cannot have a extended desktop using a splitter.  All that does is mirror the pair attached to the splitter.
You can do this however using a Matrox DualHead2Go.
Other solution would be to attach one monitor to your video out as you do the splitter and attach the other via USB (assuming the adapter supports the monitor's resolution).

  • How to output sound through my TV when using airplay to extend my desktop?

I've updated my software to Mavericks recently, and love the 'extnd desktop' feature, with exception for one flaw: all the sound still comes through my measly macbook speakers. I dragged the Pandora app to my extended desktop (i.e. my tv) in hopes that it would come through my TV speakers, but that wasn't the case. I tried going to sound preferences from my macbook to change the sound output from "internal speakers" to "apple tv", but for some reason it simply doesn't let me when I click on apple "tv".

  • HT5019 How can I extend my desktop from my first macbook pro to a second macbook pro

extend desktop from macbook pro with retina display OSX 10.8.5 onto macbook pro early 2011 OSX 10.7.4

There is a software product called ScreenRecycler that will do what you want.
You could also look at Teleport (free), which allows you to control multiple Macs sitting next to each other using one keyboard and trackpad (or mouse). While you cannot have a single app span the screens, you can have separate apps on each Mac and use copy and paste as well as regular file sharing to transfer information between the systems.  I use this at work between my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

  • Can't extend my desktop

I'm using a G4 laptop and want to use a second monitor as an extended monitor. But all I can get is a mirror of my laptop LCD. There's supposed to be a button that says "arrangement" that allows extending, a friend says, but no such button appears on my G4. Does this mean I can't use two separate desktops like the rest of the world can? HELP!!!
PS As a 20-year Mac user I'm not all that happy with the products anymore.

    Mac4ron.
If you have a PowerBook, or a MacBookPro, you shouldn't have any trouble using an extended monitor. Might have to set it up in the "Displays" system Preferences Panel.
If you have an iBook, it is a little bit more trouble, but I am successfully running a 19" flat panel at 1280x1024, and my iBook's at 1042x768. to do this, you need Screen Spanning Doctor, which you could search for at versiontracker or MacUpdate. I can also run it on only the external monitor, by getting both screens working, then closing the lid to the iBook, then clickling a mouse button to wake it up again, and use an external keyboard. I usually open the lid after waking it up, to help with cooling. It works great!

  • Desktop extending software...extend Mac Desktop to use additional monitor on a PC.

Hi folks.  I'm looking for something that will extend my mac osx desktop to a second monitor that is connected to a PC on our network.  Anyone know of anything like this?  Thanks.

I am embarrassed how simple that was.  I did warn you that I'm technologically challenged; I'm pretty sure that proved it.
The external hard drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The link you provided indicates the external drive will work with Time Machine.  I've never worked with Time Machine and don't know what my next step should be.  Would you please walk me through it?
Your help is greatly appreciated.  From the points you have accumulated, I can tell you have helped many others and I thank you for your generosity.

  • Possible to extending macbook desktop to ipad?

Is it possible to extend a MacBook Pro desktop to an iPad? I've got them connected via Bluetooth, but just curious if this is even possible.
I'm on OSX 10.8.4, and using an iPad 2.

    Take a look at AirDisplay:

    It requires WiFi, though.

  • Possible to add a monitor to extend the desktop (not mirror)?

Do this on all my desktop Macs for reducing clutter (holding palettes).
iMac G5 20". Added a 17" VGA monitor via adapter, but only get them to mirror with same display settings for each. Want a continuation of the desktop.
Is it possible to have another monitor with the iMac for this purpose?

I am lost and need some assistance. I tried to install an anime program on our iMac and found we did not have enough available disc space. I then moved a bunch of software off the hard drive and onto the Applications and personal folders. However, I think I may have moved critical start up and operational files out of touch with the machine. I froze on the desktop with a spinning pin wheel. I unplugged the computer. When I plugged back in and tried starting it up I got to a black screen with grey and white alarms and alerts with code. I could not move from this spot. Then it sounded like an internal drive was starting to spin into orbit. I shut the computer off and I'm afraid I have ruined my best teaching aid. H-E-L-P!!!!!!
