Extending SAN - Native FC over DWDM Experiences

We are in the process of adding a new Data Center which will be geographically located about 60 miles from our existing Data Center, the solution I'm proposing for continuous SAN access and replication is deploying a DWDM solution (Ciena or Cisco) to be able to extend native Fiber Channel to the new Data Center which will provide for an easier and staged migration. My only concern is latency over DWDM for FC since the distance is about 60 miles, does anyone have a real life experience or have been through this type of deployment and can provide me with some feedback, advice, "what to look for" etc, will the distance be an issue using DWDM? I appreciate your responses, thank you.

A bit late but hopefully not too late to be useful.
I have two remote Data Centers thanks to a merger. Both are less than 6 miles by car and we have two paths to each of them. Both the second paths are about 34 miles in a wild ring thanks to a very important customer down south.
Our network engineer who controls the ONS doesn't have a clue about FC and has a bad attitude to boot. IP doesn't have any problems with latency but he had no idea about the SAN and latency.
I found he had somehow or another got 1 out of the four paths to go down the long link and the other 3 were using the short link. Our sync HDS True Copy got very upset about this and I could not work out why. We were getting terrible timeouts of about 300 ms. This bought down a couple of mission critical apps that relied on response times of less than about 20 ms. They would not write to disk at the remote size in enough time. We worked the problem out after a bit of yelling at each other. Now he knows to always use both paths if he fails them over and to actually let me know he is doing something. To be fair, the Brocade switches also sharing the links identified the link distance mismatch.
Another issue was turning on In Order Delivery for the mainframe. That should not be mixed with other general traffic. HDS are also (quitely) adamant that you should not mix sync and async from the same ports on the storage. I had to seperate them so we have one pair for sycn and another pair for async. It looks like a SAN problem but its the different writing patterns for sync and asnyc.
60 miles is too long for HDS sync TC. I believe there is an unwritten law that 32 to 34 miles is the longest to use for sync TC. Async is not a problem. I have not used any FC accelerators. I also have EMC arrays and I have no replication issues with them either.
When I first set up the native FC over ONS, I did a fair bit of measuring and testing. Our Exchange geo cluster using sync TC normally ran at about 5 ms response times down both paths. Thats a write to the remote Data Centre and then a write to the storage on site. Heavy work showed about 10 to 12 ms. MS suggest anything less than 20 ms. 32 miles is about 0.5 of a ms extra for latency so I never actually noticed any difference with either path.
I did a lot of async tc to keep replica's of important systems offsite and once all the fine points were worked out, it was a great solution.
60 miles could be 160 using the other path.
I have not tried FCIP but I believe there are no issues with it if the IP latency is acceptable.
Balancing of backups is a pain. The backup system might have 10 tape drives available and they will use the ones on one path and nothing on the other path. That causes congestion and slow response.. blah.. blah.. They don't care. Also, use a port channel as you need two ISL's..
NEVER tell anyone that your ISL's are over distance unless you absolutely have too. Companies will always blame that. I have a mixture of Brocade and Cisco switches using the ONS. I had a problem with my Brocade fabric and Brocade immediately stopped working on the problem as they blamed the ONS for creating timeouts, etc.. etc.. It had nothing to do with it but you see what I am saying.

  • Extending SAN&LAN over dark fiber (DWDM)?

    Hi, sorry for my English, but I hope you understand me, and I understand your answers:)
    We are in the process of adding new data center (DC2), which will be geographically located about 20 km from our existing data center (DC1). Between them laid dark fiber (two fibers). We need a solution for the LAN(layer 2) and SAN(native FC) extension ...
    Solution is to see me use two passive EWDM-MUX8 at both ends of dark fiber with DWDM transceivers on the equipment in the DC1 & DC2.
    For Ethernet, we propose to use Cisco 10GBASE DWDM X2 Modules (p/n:DWDM-X2-xx.xx =) - equipment at both ends supports these modules.
    For FC we propose to use DWDM SFP Modules for Cisco ONS Family (p/n:ONS-SC-4G-xx.x =).
    SAN equipment at both ends - Cisco MDS 9124 (p/n:DS-C9124AP-K9).
    But I'm not entirely sure of the correctness of this decision, especially in SAN extension.
    Is this workable solution?
    Does the Cisco MDS 9124 supports this transceivers (ONS-SC-4G-xx.x=)?
    There are other potential pitfalls are not visible to me?
    In advance, thanks for the advice.

    For ethernet, your decision is correct.
    For SAN, things get a little dicey. The MDS 9124 doesn't support the ONS transcievers, and the FC 4G LH transciever is limited in distance to about 10 km.
    If it were me, I would do things a little differently. I would put a Nexus 5000 series at each end of your dark fiber, with a 20 GB etherchannel trunk between them. Each nexus would then be connected to your data center ethernet network via 10 gig ethernet, and to your MDS's via 2/4/8 gig FC. The nexus could then be set up such that FC traffic destined for the other end will be encapsulated in ethernet, sent over the link, unencapsulated at the other end, and sent to the appropriate FC host.
    It's relatively easy, simple to operate, and no mucking around with DWDM/CWDM, which can be a very complex animal.

  • IP over OTN or IP over DWDM?

    these are two main trend in IP core Network construction.
    The core different between them is how to dealing with the TDM service or other small granularity service in electrical layer. in Router or in OTN?
    What is your opinion? I find many expert or communication fancier here, so beg your answers.

    The core different between them is how to dealing with the TDM service or other small granularity service in electrical layer. in Router or in OTN?
    As per my knowledge, difference between IP over DWDM or IP over OTN is which method can take all type of traffic (voice, data, video etc ) in efficient way not just TDM service or granularity (ROuter cannot beat SONET/SDH boxes in handling TDM traffic).
    Most of the traffic now a days is IP not TDM, whereas OTN are good for TDM
    Question is what can take packet effieciently without too many layers in between. Whether to add IP feature to OTN or Transport feature to Router.
    I have no answer who will win IP in router or OTN but IP over DWDM (In router ) will not be the best solution. This method is good for point to point High speed connection things will change if you have lot of traffic to crossconnect.
    In other post you have question that how can you separate traffic on different wavelngths, what do you think will your router will act as a crossconnect to segregate different traffic or what if you need only 5 Gig to point A and 5 Gig to point B will the router grrom that traffic?

  • Itunes freezes up when my iphone or ipad is connected and charging for an extended time like charging over night.

    Itunes freezes up when ipad or iphone is connected via USB for an extended time like charging over night or even several hours. I am running all current software with all updates on a Macbook Pro. When I hit Eject I get the spinning beachball and have to hit command-option-escape to get out of it or the beachball will stay present forever. Any suggestions?

    Looks like new firmware upgrade solved this issue.

  • Is the IP over DWDM solution standardlized?

    Because if this solution is not standardlized, the carriers cannot accept this solution--IP direct over DWDM without OTU board.
    Not standardlized means absolutely monopolization. So the carriers are not fool.

    I dont consider myself an expert on this topic or any other my knowledge is like few drops of the oceans so lot more to learn.
    I dont think so, this is just why I opened this discussion, because, you know, no vendor would like to compliant with CRS-1 DWDM interface, OTU is the most value of the transport network. and different DWDM has different encoding method.
    My optical knowledge tells me(i can be wrong) that if CRS-1 G.709 module need to be transposted over any other vendor DWDM system AND if the siganl is NOT 3R regenrated (means you are not using the transponder of other vendor)it it either going through a Optical Amplifier or Dispersion module. Then i dont think these different encoding method is considered by these modules.
    These different encoding techniques(I think you are talking about FEC & Enhanced FEC ) are important when you are sending it over a distance when it undergo 3R regeneration.
    Something like Crs-1 (G709 card)-Other Vendor (Optical MUx, Optical Amplifier etc NO Transposnder) -CRS-1 (G.709Card ) a setup which i think is not dependent on what encoding is being used.
    Forexample here Cisco CRS-1 is implemented with Ciena Optical Transposrt. (I dont know the validity of this deployment as i know things are different when you want to deploy these solutions)

  • How to persuade the carriers choose the solution of IP over DWDM?

    Hi,every one.
    why IP over DWDM(15454) is the correct choice for carrier class service?
    why the router can instead of SDH/OCS?
    Except of save the client interface between DWDM and Router, What other advantages?
    Best regard!

    1. SDH can also provide you carrier class service, IP over DWDM is right choice if you have too many wavelengths from one point to another (not sub wavelength). You reduce your cost as removing layers.
    SDH is right choice when you need subwavelngth kind of capacity between nodes as DWDM crossconnect are not as good as SDH crossconnect.
    2. Why router because you are removing the SDH layer.
    3. Apart from saving SDH boxes IP over DWDM also will be less complex in troubleshooting. If your router is working fine then problem is in DWDM layer. If you have IP/SDH/DWDM then it is comples to isolate problem.
    I think IP over DWDM are still in early stages as is rigid kind of network even with today WXC. Need a totally different kind of wavelength crossconnect to see all the benfits of IP over DWDM.

  • UCS - san-port-channel over vpc

    Hi,
    I'm hoping someone can help out with this,
    I have a setup with 2 Nexus 5548's connected over a vpc peer link and a keepalive, These two nexus switch's have a standard VPC connection to an upstream 6500. this is working fine,
    Then there are multiple native FC connections from the 5548's to 6248's. I know there is the option to configure FC port-channel's on the UCS 2.0 but is it possible to put fc interfaces of the nexus 5548 into a san port-channel across a vpc between the the nexus 5548's.
    so for example, can i port-channel the following across a vpc or is a san port-channel restricted to ports on the same nexus switch only.
    Fabric A  fc1/31 & fc1/32    uplinked to  -> NX5K-1  Port fc1/31 & NX5K-2 Port fc1/32 (san port-channel 10 over a VPC)
    Fabric B  fc1/31 & fc1/32    uplinked to  -> NX5K-1  Port fc1/32 & NXFK-2 Port fc1/31 (san port-channel 11 over a VPC)
    Thanks,
    Ray.

    This is not possible. Vpc is layer 2 only ethernet port channel. San port channel cannot be built accross vpc

  • Configuring Ethernet MAN for EMC SRDF over DWDM for SQL Server GeoCluster

    Guys,
    I posted this on the Data Center Networking forum but got no reply.... perhaps this is a better forum for the question....
    We are in the process of deploying a SAN environment (EMC Symmetrix) at two data centres and linking the two sites using ONS15540's (DWDM) for Synchronous replication (EMC's SRDF).
    We are now wanting to design a solution using EMC GeoSpan and Microsoft Clusters Services for supporting a geographically disperse SQL Server 2000 cluster.
    The biggest design issue is the requirement for all nodes in a Microsoft Cluster to be on the same VLAN / Layer 2 network. In the past we have always focused on running independant subnets at the two sites, and all inter-data center communication was down by routing at Layer-3.
    Our network support company is not prepared to implement a single VLAN across the two data centers as they are concerned with the risks of spanning tree outages etc bringing down both sites!
    Can someone assist in identifying the risks, and ways to mitigate these risks, in running a single VLAN across two sites using DWDM (GigE) as the transport mechanism?
    I am also extremely keen to talk to anyone who has actually done GeoClustering... specifically with Microsoft SQL Server.

    I'm trying to dig up a resource within Cisco that has Deployed this solution in a DWDM network.

  • Extended table printing issues over page break

    I have an extended table on a form that may have many rows - multi pages generated from a database.
    when printing or print pdf - safari and firefox will split a row at bottom of a page and start of next page... page break problem...
    if i control database output wich 50 recs per page then user would have to print each page separately - wasting time - so that is not a good option....
    Q: how do I get this to print best for viewing without page break problem?
    Thaks in advance for your help - dave

    Hi Amruta ,
    I hope the following steps will solve your problem :
    1. Merge the data from the 3 tables into a single table (say gt_outtab).
    2. The table gt_outtab should have a field (say tab ) to indicate the table from which the data has come . Depending on the tables conatining the initial data , you can assign 1, 2 , 3 into the new field (tab).
    3. Bulid the fieldcatalog with the particular column (TAB) of the output table as no_out='X'.
    gs_fieldcat-COL_POS = lv_line.
      gs_fieldcat-fieldname = 'TAB'.
      gs_fieldcat-outputlen = 1.
      gs_fieldcat-just      = 'L'.
      gs_fieldcat-coltext   = 'Table'.
      gs_fieldcat-seltext   = 'Table'.
      gs_fieldcat-NO_OUT   = 'X'.
      APPEND gs_fieldcat TO lt_fcat.
    4. Define the data of type lvc_s_print
    DATA: gs_print TYPE lvc_s_prnt.
    5. Before calling the method set_table_for_first_display assign grpchgedit of the structure gs_print as 'X'
    gs_print-grpchgedit = 'X'.
        CALL METHOD gr_grid->set_table_for_first_display
            EXPORTING
               is_print            = gs_print
               is_layout           = ls_layo
            CHANGING
              it_outtab           = gt_outtab[]
              it_fieldcatalog     = lt_fcat.
    6. Run the report . The particular column is not displayed in the list.
    7. Go to Print Preview mode. Press the sort ascending or descending button on toolbar (without selecting a column).A dialog box appears asking for sort order.
    8. Add the field(TAB), from the available list on right hand side.
    9. In the last column titled NG of this sort order dialog box, write * for page feed .
    10. Press the copy button .
    Hope this solves your problem .
    Thanks ,

  • SAN or NAS for Premiere, experience/recommendation?

    As we convert to Adobe CC from Final Cut, I must figure out if it's possible to hang a shared, mutually accessible media and project storage device between two Macs. I've talked to salespeople but I need some real world, user-oriented answers. If you're wiling to share, please drop me a note:
    dbogie_at_idahopower_dot_com
    BTW, I tried, but searching for the terms SAN and NAS returns thousands of useless posts about San Francisco and NASCAR.
    many thanks

    Hi bogiesan,
    Here's what we've said in the past:
    Premiere Pro can work with network storage if it's mounted as a network volume (Mac OS) or mapped drive (Windows), and the OS-level device driver does not mark the volume as removable.
    That said, Premiere Pro itself doesn't have any locking features so it's not set up to be used by multiple users at the same time. It is suggested that if you are going to have multiple users, split up the project into several smaller projects and then import all the sequences into a master project when completed.  It is recommended that all systems are locked to the same time of day to prevent reconforming of media files.
    We do know that people want to work on shared projects, that is why we are developing Adobe Anywhere. I understand that, currently, Adobe Anywhere is not a solution for absolutely everyone looking to work in a shared environment. What I do have (although for CS6) is this white paper to see considerations on working with Premiere Pro in a SAN environment: bit.ly/SQQudc
    I hope it helps.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • 3G-SDI over DWDM

    Hi Everyone,
    Our system is a point-to-point 15454 ONS MSTP. Our cards are AR-XPs licensed for MXP-VD-10G. The software release is 9.4. In our first node 1 AR-XP have 3 ONS-SC-HD3GV-TX on ports 1-3, on the other node our AR-XP have 3 ONS-SC-HD3GV-RX on ports 1-3, both have trunks on port 9. All the PPMs in ports 1-3 can only be configured as SDI_3G_VIDEO. In our testing, we created an OCHCC circuit with SDI_3G_VIDEO size on port 1 between the two nodes. We tried to pass SD-signal and HD-signal traffic but only the SD-signal video was successful. We also noticed that even though our SFPs should be configurable as SD-SDI, HD-SDI, and 3G-SDI, we can only configure them as 3G-SDI. In our 3G-SDI circuit, is it possible to pass HD-SDI?
    We tried to find procedures for this in our manuals and procedure guides but couldn’t find any. Are there any settings that we need to set in our configurations for the trunk or circuit? Any presentation for the step by step configuration will help.
    Thanks!

    No. Messaging, or SMS is done over the cellular system. An exception would be a texting app that can be obtained through the App store. Not sure of the names, as I have never used them, but you should be able to find information. It is similar to SMS, but it works a little differently.
