Extending the 24" iMac G5

Have any professional designers (or anyone) paired the 24" iMac with a 24" LED Cinema display?
I'd like to know if this is possible - I know it is not possible to extend the 24" iMac with a 30" Cinema Display.
Are the graphic rendering capabilities of the 24" LED comparable to the 30"?

You probably don't have a "G5" because there are no 24-inch iMac G5 models. You probably have an Intel-based iMac (which is not a PowerPC "G5"). If it is a 20-inch iMac G5, you cannot connect the 24-inch LED-backlit LCD (Cinema Display) from Apple.
If it is a 2009 Intel iMac model, it has a Mini DisplayPort. The LED Cinema Display connects via Mini DisplayPort, so you can connect it with no adapter. You can also connect the 30-inch Cinema Display, if you get this special dual-link DVI adapter.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A
If it is a 2008 or earlier Intel iMac model, it has a mini-DVI port. I do not know of any mini-DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapters, so you will not be able to connect the 24-inch LED Cinema Display (unless there is such an adapter now or in the future). You also cannot connect a dual-link DVI display (30-inch display) to the mini-DVI port. You can, however, connect any standard regular DVI (or VGA) displays to the mini-DVI port with the appropriate adapter. The max resolution for a digital (DVI) display is 1920x1200 (typical 23/24-inch display).
So the real question is, what iMac model to you really have? This might help with the ID.

  • How do I add an Airport Express to extend the range of my WIFI network with my iMac as a base station?

    Hi people
I need help to configure a new Airport Express only to extend the range of my WIFI network.
My ethernet cable from modem is connected directly in my iMac and I am sharing the internet by WIFI inside home very fine.
Now, I would like connect my devices on my garden on backyard.
I can't move my iMac from their place and i just want add a Airport Express between the iMac and backyard to extend the range of WIFI.
But I can't to configure to that. On Airport Utility appear the Airport Express connected directly to internet globe, but don't work.
So, what can I do? What is wrong?
    Thanks all and best regards.
    Carlos Sgrillo, from Brazil.

The AirPort cannot do what you ask.
The Airport needs to connect to a modem, or another router......not to a computer.
The Express can only extend a wireless signal that has been provided by another Apple router.

  • How do i use airport extreme to extend the range of my imac

I have an 2012 Imac and I would like to plug the Internet to my imac and use the the imac wireless and use my airport express to extend the range of the imac wireless signal.  I am having an awfully hard time figuring this out - can anyone pass along a link to a document or any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Apple's instructions for this are here:

Although two AirPort Extremes are pictured in the example, the setup for a Time Capsule and AirPort Express would be exactly the same.
In general, a good starting location for the AirPort Express would be a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. You may need to experiment with the location of the Express a bit depending on the number of obstructions like walls and/or ceilings in the signal path

  • I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless network with Airport Express. Everything is fine until I try to select Extend the wireless network.  I select Extend Wireless network but have no success. Ideas?

I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless to rooms with a weak signal.  The internet connection is fine with the basic setup. As soon as I go into Airport Utility to select Extend Wireless Network and fill in what I believe is proper information, I get an error message that Airport Extreme no longer has an IP address, the internet connection is broken, and under Wireless, that there is a wireless network in existence that can't be found. Rebooting the modem only brings the Airport Extreme back to the starting gate so that the internet is once again available.  I assumed (naively) that with the All Mac All-the-Time context, adding Airport Express would truly be Plug and Play.   I got the plug, but no play.  I asked a Comcast technical specialist about it and he said that I needed to reset the Airport Express settings back to their default, factory status.  I looked that process up online and found out that the way to do that was to hold down the reset button, then plug Airport Express into the socket and wait for the green light to flash four times.  Then wait 45 seconds and the default settings will return.  I did all that, only to find out that after the initial flash of green, green never appeared again.  I got a fast flashing yellow light, followed by the light going off.  Apparently this didn't reset it properly.  So, after hours trying to get this system to work, I appeal to someone who can see through this mess and provide the key to success!

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.
    Extreme, Express, Time Capsule

  • I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use?

I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use? My 2006 iMAC is showing it's age but I figure I can use it as just a monitor just fine. Assuming I can connect the two together.

That older iMac isn't designed to receive video input through the mini-DVI connection. Only certain newer iMacs are able to be used as displays.
Your only options are to use something like ScreenRecycler mentioned above.

  • Am I able to extend the desktop when a 27" display is attached to my IMAC 27"

Am I able to extend the desktop when I use a 27" IMAC and a 27" extra display?

    Hi Donald,
Go to System Preferences > Displays > and you should see two different windows, one for your iMac's display and one for the extra display. Click on the one for the extra display. Click on the Arrangement tab at the top. In the lower left corner, uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays" and it should go to extended desktop. You may also wish to check the box for Show displays in menu bar if you need to access the Displays pref frequently.

if you follow all 7 steps, you can download a trial via one of the links on this page using a browser that accepts cookies:  http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-10-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a download problem, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  typically, failure to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 is the problem, but your browser must also allow cookies so that's (a restrictive browser setting) another potential source of problems.

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • How to extend the network when the main base station is a netgear WPN824 ?

We have had a LAN since 98 with the first graphite AirPorts. Last years, we changed to 2 AirPort Express to include a printer and to extend the range. Now when we moved, needed further extention and have enhanced number of devices to connect to the LAN I thought an Extreme would be the right thing. But they are not sold in Sweden any longer! OK checking up what is on the market it looks like they need an upgrading. So listening to some good advice netgear should be right and easy to build into a network, I bought a WPN824. It works fine, with the ADSL+2 modem. Adding the AirPort Expresses (3 of them) work as long as they are wireless clients. But I can't sort it out to extendling our LAN. The AirPorts won't recognize the WPN824 as a WDS mainbase station. The router set up for the WPN824 doesn't include WDS, says extending network is by making another network on another channel and to have another SSID. I tried that but it only makes the AirPort Expresses look yellow and not complying with transfer of internet connection.
Someone have an idea of how to make it out? Or of another up to date router with WDS function and being recognized by AirPorts?
    Cheers

OK, this is the way of learning - make mistakes. I can sell the WPN824 to the neighbours who are PC folks. But do you know any suitable router instead of the AirPort Extreme (and an updated version) I need as it isn´t for sale at present?
I can't even make the WPN824 an access point to an AirPort Express as it demands two ethernet ports!
Well, I'll still love our mac fleet and to get a good network (reaching to the beach house) is worth an effort!

  • How can I use AirportExtreme to extend range of iMac based AirportNetwork ?

I've read a lot of infomation about using Airport Extreme or Express to extend a network that has an Airport Extreme base station as its 'hub' via WDS, but nothing about the case where the 'hub' (that creates the network and is connected to the internet) is not a base station, but a computer.
I have a cable modem connected directly (Ethernet) to my iMac G5. My MacBookPro can connect to the internet via an Airport network created by the iMac, but i need to extend the range of this. A friend has given me an Airport Extreme that he isn't using and I have spent all day trying to get it to connect to the iMacs network ... to act as a 'relay', but can't see how to do it.
(I can get the iMac, and MacBookPro to connect to a network created by the Airport Extreme with no problems, but not the other way round) .... Please help, i'm going crazy with this !

    Hi SGIII,
I just wanted to say thanks for kick starting me. I am well on my way to accomplishing this task with some modifications to the Applescript source you provided. I figured out that I would need to loop through the input and lookup each individual character in the dictionary (so I created a separate service to handle simple dictionary lookup). I parse the definition using your suggested code wrapped into a function, and then append the output. Right now it's close but not perfect: showing this output for the characters above:
"wǒshìAměiAguórén" (the A is wrong and the reason is that I need to change the delimiter to factor that some definitions will have a capital A in them). I will share the finished script on my pastebin.
    ----on run {input, parameters}
    set my_string to "我是美国人" --input
    set output to ""
repeat with counter_variable_name from 1 to count of my_string
      set current_character to item counter_variable_name of my_string
      set current_definition to do shell script "automator -i " & current_character & " ~/Library/Services/GetChineseDefinition.workflow"
set output to output & parseForPinyin(current_definition)
    end repeat
    --end run
    on parseForPinyin(character_input)
      set pyCharSet to {"a", "ā", "á", "ǎ", "à", "b", "c", "d", "e", "ē", "é", "ě", "è", "f", "g", "h", "i", "ī", "í", "ǐ", "ì", "j", "k", "l", "m", "n", "o", "ō", "ó", "ǒ", "ò", "p", "q", "r", "s", "t", "u", "ū", "ú", "ǔ", "ù", "ǖ", "ǚ", "ǜ", "w", "x", "y", "z"}
      set {oTID, AppleScript's text item delimiters} to {AppleScript's text item delimiters, "①"}
      set cc to (character_input as string)'s text items's item 1's characters 2 thru -1
      set py to ""
      repeat with c in cc
if c is in pyCharSet then set py to py & c
      end repeat
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oTID
      return py
    end parseForPinyin
The GetChineseDictionary Service couldn't be simpler:

  • Can I use an airport extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem

Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem?
At one end of my house I have a dual band wireless ADSL modem which provides my internet connection and I want to extend (improve) the wireless coverage to the other of the hosue where my Apple TV (2nd gen) is located. I have being trying to extend my wireless network with an Airport Extreme but so far without success. I can get the Airport to join the wireless network, but I suspect that it is only acting as another client and not actually extending the wireless range. There is a setting in the Airport configuration to "extend and existing network", however when I choose this option the Airport no longer connects to my existing wireless network and I am beginning to suspect that this fuction only works with another Apple device (Airport Extreme or Express).
Has anyone been able to extend the range of a third party wireless router / modem with an AirPort Extreme? If so, any advice that you can offer wold be appreciated.
    Regards
    Michael

    Thanks Tesserax,
Your answer has confirmed my suspicions.
Option 1 from your suggested solutions is not a goer because the modem and Airport Extreme are in different parts of the house making it impractical to run a cable between the two devices.
I did try option 2 and bought a Netgear range extender, which according to Netgear it would work with my D-Link modem - not.
However I have managed to work around the problem (sort of) by using the Airport Extreme to create a wireless network between my iMac 27 and my Apple TV. The idea is that the iMac will act as a router between ethernet connected ADSL modem and the wirelessly connected Apple TV.
The good news is that I am now able to play the content from my iTunes library on my Apple TV without interruptions due to a poor wireless connection . Although the connection from the Apple TV to the internet is not working I think this is most likely just a configuration issue and for me it is not really a show stopper.

  • Is there a directional issue with the 24" iMacs?

I am having a problem with a 24 inch iMac in a garage apartment next to my house. I have an airport extreme on the far side of my house, and an Airport Express on the near side of the house in a window facing the garage--set up to extend the Airport Extreme. The Express is literally 6 feet down and 20 feet over from where the problem iMac is. There is a metal roof, so I put some of the blame on that. But here is what fixed mine.
The iMac was oriented at a 90 degree angle, so in essence, the long thin profile was facing directly toward the airport. After lots of trouble with good signal one minute and no signal the next, one day I decided to turn the computer 90 degrees, so that the back of the iMac directly faces the Airport. Now I get a consistent all-bars signal.
I haven't been able to find anything on the directionality of the Airport in these large metal clad iMacs. Anyone know anything about this?

Metal file cabinets, and piping in walls can affect the wireless signal.
2.4 Ghz wireless phones can too.
    Microwaves can as well.

  • Extend the network for airport extreme

Problem overview. I have a timeWarner cable modem that has both wired and wireless output supporting four external ethernet ports. I want to extend my network (bridge) to use the extreme in another room and connect other hardware that has only ethernet capabity only. My test configuration consist of an Imac wired to TimeWarner Modem and a stand alone laptop (Macbook pro). I can connect to both the wireless and wired configuration for TIme warner with out a problem.
If I take the airport extreme, and connect teh Timewarner ethernet output to the WAN input and the laptop to the free extreme ports, then I am able to add capability where the extreme can create a new wireless network and the laptop can gain access to the internet via the new wireless an wired network fine.
This was done as an initial test to verify the extreme was working but really is not what I want. I want a bridge connection. Therefore
    1) Using airport express I changed the wireless settings to Extend the Network.
    2) Removed the WAN cable from the extreme.
    3) Was able to connect to the extreme using the airport utility and show the status as an extended network.
    Overview
The network shows to be the ssid of my local network (Walmart)
    The IP Address is 192.168.0.6
    The serial number is COPJ900JDM72
    Version 7.6.1
    Status: Extended Network.
Now when I hook my Macbook pro to the ethernet port into 1 of three ports on the extreme.
    The ip address shows 169.254.98.37
I never acquire a valid IP address to connect to the network from the Macbook Pro.
    What am I doing wrong?

Hi - if I understand correctly, you want to connect the Express wirelessly to the TWC modem/router and then connect your MBP to the ethernet port - is this true?
