Extending the Desktop to External Display

When I connect my MacBook (2GHz Core Duo, 512 MB) to an external display (projector, HDTV) I get the "default" desktop background on that display, not the image I currently have set as the desktop on the MacBook's display. How do I make the desktop image track to be the same as the MacBook's? Is there a way to "stretch" those desktop images to cover both displays? By the way, I'm using the built-in Apple desktop images.

Hey,
I believe what your experiencing is the Dual Display Option. The MacBook will automatically start up in dual display mode. This means you can use both your MacBook Monitor and your external for screens. To have a mirror image press F7 to toggle between mirroring and dual.
Give that a try.

You cannot have a extended desktop using a splitter.  All that does is mirror the pair attached to the splitter.
You can do this however using a Matrox DualHead2Go.
Other solution would be to attach one monitor to your video out as you do the splitter and attach the other via USB (assuming the adapter supports the monitor's resolution).

  • Am I able to extend the desktop when a 27" display is attached to my IMAC 27"

Am I able to extend the desktop when I use a 27" IMAC and a 27" extra display?

    Hi Donald,
Go to System Preferences > Displays > and you should see two different windows, one for your iMac's display and one for the extra display. Click on the one for the extra display. Click on the Arrangement tab at the top. In the lower left corner, uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays" and it should go to extended desktop. You may also wish to check the box for Show displays in menu bar if you need to access the Displays pref frequently.

  • Video Mirroring / Extending the desktop

I have a 12" iBook G3 800mhz dual usb and have just bought a Samsung TFT 17" which works fine and plugged straight in using the apple adapter. I wanted to extend the desktop to have palettes etc. on the laptop screen, then use the 17" for the file window. Is this possible at all on an ibook, or do I need a new graphics card or something? any help appreciated

You really need a PowerBook to do screen spanning. There is a software hack that will enable you to do it, but it is not recommended by Apple, and can endanger your iBook (i.e., kill it dead). I RECOMMEND THAT YOU NOT DO THIS. I don't usually even post the link.

  • T430 cannot duplicate desktop on external display

I am having a problem with my brand new T430.
I have purchased a miniDP to HDMI adapter, if I connect the adapter to my thinkpad and then an HDMI cable from the adapter to the external monitor it will correctly duplicate the display. However when I use the Fn to switch between duplicate, extend etc. I cannot get it back to successfully duplicate. If I disconnect the adapter and reconnect it will still not duplicate the display.
If I enter the monitor properties on Windows 7 the internal display is labelled as display 1 and 2 whereas the external display is labelled as display 3. I can only duplicate 1 to 2 so cannot duplicate to the external device. If I extend my display it will display on the external device as expected and if I select external only it works fine.
    Anyone else experienced this?
    This is my spec:
    i7-3520M (3.6GHz)
    8GB Corsair Vengence RAM
    250GB Samsung 840 SSD
    14in 1600x900 HD+ LCD
    NVIDIA NVS 5400M 2GB
    Win7 Pro 64
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I called Lenovo and they helped me resolve the issue.
It is a known bug with the HD4000/Nvidia switchable graphics, Windows is not able to control the clone display so in order to clone the display you must open Nvidia control panel, goto setup multiple displays, if the internal monitor shows as 'Laptop Display' and 'Analogue Display' then untick Analogue display. Make sure the external display is ticked, right click the Laptop Display and select Clone and clone to the external. Then click Apply at the bottom of the screen.

  • Desktop on external display not showing correctly

    hi,
we have just purchased a macbook and the required leads to connect it to the TV (sony Bravia) this has worked correctly(the macbook detects the TV) and we are able to see the mac workspace on the tv both in mirror mode and extend desktop mode.
However when we view the desktop on the tv it is almost like the desktop is too big for the tv display area so we cannot see the tool bar at the top at all. This happens regardless of the resolution we choose.
the macbook is connected via the mini DVI to a HDMI connection. the laptop seems to be happy running in 1920x1080 on the TV. it is just cutting off the tool bar
any ideas will be greatly received.
    thanks
    Prog

I also have the same problem, it occurs with all resolutions, from 1080p on down. If I use the extended desktop on the tv it still doesn't quite show all of the background image. The tv I am using is a 26" RCA HDTV, with the mini-dp to dvi connector, then dvi to hdmi adaptor, then hdmi to the tv. If I use the mini-dp to vga then vga to the tv everything looks the way it is supposed to, but I don't get 1080 resoulution. On the tv, when I hook up through the hdmi cable, I can't change the screen geometry as that option is only available to the pc connection(vga), it is grayed out under hdmi. With either connection I don't have any screen geometry settings available under system preferences. If anyone can help with this, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Extending the desktop

     Hello-
This is my first visit/post here, and I am hoping that someone can help me!
I am running Windows XP, with the G4MX440-T card.
I do a LOT of work in photoshop, and in the intrest of streamlining my work area, I have attempted to extend my desktop with a used (but working!)$1.99 color monitor, and a ($9.00)VGA splitter. So far, my investment in $ is reasonable ) , however my frustration level is not ;( .
I was told by several folks theoretically in the know, that this should work, but no luck!!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks--Frank

    Hi Frank,
A VGA splitter will only split a single input into two or more identical outputs - so you'll get the same picture on both monitors.
What you need is two separate VGA outputs - either a "dual-head" video card, or if the motherboard has onboard video, you can use that (you may need to enable it in BIOS). It's probably best to use the graphics card output for your main photoshop display, and the on-board output for the old monitor (although it may be useful if that is designated as the "primary" output, and you open photoshop on the "secondary" monitor).
    Hope this helps,
    Mike

  • Possible to add a monitor to extend the desktop (not mirror)?

Do this on all my desktop Macs for reducing clutter (holding palettes).
iMac G5 20". Added a 17" VGA monitor via adapter, but only get them to mirror with same display settings for each. Want a continuation of the desktop.
Is it possible to have another monitor with the iMac for this purpose?

I am lost and need some assistance. I tried to install an anime program on our iMac and found we did not have enough available disc space. I then moved a bunch of software off the hard drive and onto the Applications and personal folders. However, I think I may have moved critical start up and operational files out of touch with the machine. I froze on the desktop with a spinning pin wheel. I unplugged the computer. When I plugged back in and tried starting it up I got to a black screen with grey and white alarms and alerts with code. I could not move from this spot. Then it sounded like an internal drive was starting to spin into orbit. I shut the computer off and I'm afraid I have ruined my best teaching aid. H-E-L-P!!!!!!

  • How can i extend the desktop of my retina Macbook using an ATV?

    Hey,
i know i had this working before, but i was using the developer preview of mavericks in that time. So is it possible?( or is it even a feature that comes with mavericks?) and if so: how would i do it?
i'm only offered the option to mirror the screen currently.
    Any help would be great.

It's an announced feature that will come with OS X Mavericks > http://www.apple.com/osx/preview
Until then, a third-party app can extend your desktop to your Apple TV, like AirParrot > http://www.airsquirrels.com/airparrot/

  • What do I need for the best quality external display?

    Greetings all,
I purchased the Intel i5 15inch Macbook Pro around July this year and I am wanting to use my external ldc monitor, which happens to be a Samsung Syncmaster 226cw, to act as my main display for the system. I tried asking an individual at Best Buy what would be the best quality way to ensure that my Macbook Pro will effectively use my monitor's native max resolution of 1680x1050, and he seemed rather clueless. So here I am. I know there are a lot of other users who have a lot of experience with this sort of thing and I'm placing myself in your hands for help and guidance.
If it helps, here is the factory description of my monitor I am wanting to use:
    http://www.samsung.com/sg/consumer/pc-peripherals-printer/monitor/lcd-monitor/LS 22MEXSFV/XSS/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=specification
If anyone can point me into the right direction I'd be very appreciative!

The specs say DVI-D so your best bet is the minidisplay port to DVI adapter then the appropriate DVI-D male to male cable.
    http://store.apple.com/au/product/MB570Z/A (the adapter)
    http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=363050 (the cable)
Note your display is only 1050 high so you wont get a full HD image - my LCD HD monitor (BenQ 24") is 1920 x 1080 pixels which is "full size".

  • Satellite L550 - Can I extend the display?

    Hello,
I was wondering if I can extend the desktop onto an external monitor? I need to be able to work on a large double screen desktop. I know the L550 has a VGA out, however - I have a feeling it can only be used to send desktop 1 to another display or duplicate.
If it makes any difference the model I am looking to buy is the L550-1C9 or L550-1CC
    Thanks :)

"switch between laptop LCD and external monitor very easy using FN+F5 key combination"
Switch between? I need to be able to use both internal & external displays to create one larger display.
I have to have one monitor for research while I use the other for writing. I need the 17" display as If I'm out somewhere
I could make-do sitting word & firefox together until I get back home.
The HDMI port is not necessary, however, even although it's not a requirement - I would like to have that option.

  • How do I turn off the external display screen on my MBP even after I disconnect the second screen?

I connected my MBP to my television via the HDMI port to watch a movie. Whenever I have a second display connected I have different wallpapers for each screen. After the movie was over I disconnected the cable and started surfing the web, and I always have safari full screen so I have to three finger swipe to go back to my desktop. After disconnecting the hdmi cable, the external display screen became part of the three finger swipe in full screen mode. I can swipe to go from safari to second display screen (not connected to anything) and then to my desktop.
My question is how do I get rid of the dog-gone external display screen? I am getting tired of having to swipe more than once from full screen to my desktop.

Disregard this question, I figured it out. I just had to go in a delete the other desktops that showed up, how they got there in the first place, I'm not sure but I will visit the apple store to ask some questions.
Mods you can close and/or delete this whole convo.

  • The dock indicator lights look fairly dim on the MBA display, but bright on external displays (LCD TVs for example). Any fixes?

    (MacBook Air mid-2012)
As stated in the title, I've noticed the indicator lights on the dock which represent an open/running application looking fairly dim as opposed to the previous dock design in Lion. After a little look around on the internet, there are some others who are having a similar issue, but I've noticed that upon connecting the laptop to external displays (monitors and LCD TVs), they look extremely bright and noticeable on that particular screen.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/19126554#19126554 This thread appears to address the same issue, yet its odd how the dock "raises" if connected to an external display in my case. I'm considering locating the image files used to display the dock indicators and photoshopping them to be brighter.

  • How do i use an external display with my macbook pro?

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro sleep and external display problem

I recently upgraded to the new 2010 15 inch core i7 Macbook Pro. The problem i have is that it will not detect an external display (23inch Cinema) after waking from sleep. This happens after using the display to extend the desktop and also when using the Macbook in closed mode.
I've managed to get it to detect the display only after either restarting the Macbook completely or by going into energy saver and switching to dedicated graphics then going back to detect display.
It seems that when on integrated graphics it doesn't register that an external display is connected. If i leave a program open and running that causes the dedicated graphics to kick in then it works ok. If i close all programs, shut the macbook pros lid, computer sleeps and external display shuts off. If i click the mouse to wake with lid closed, apple logo lights, machine starts up few seconds later macbook returns to sleep. If i open the screen the machine wakes as normal but the external monitor doesn't.
Any help is much appreciated as its starting to frustrate me now...
    Many thanks
oh and im running OSX 10.6.3

I thought it was intermittent to begin with until i started looking into it. By leaving programs open, like aperture, before i put the machine to sleep it appears to wake the external monitor up without a problem. If i shut all programs or leave basic things open like safari and mail which don't require the dedicated graphics, then upon wake it wont register an external screen is connected.
Manually detecting displays in settings doesn't work.
Disconnecting and reconnecting mini display port doesn't work.
Turning off power to cinema display and powering back up doesn't work.
To get the display going again its either 1) turn off macbook pro and re-boot or 2) re-start the machine then the display is automatically recognised. Or 3) launch a programme that kicks in dedicated graphics then manually go in and detect displays again..... like magic the display then springs to life.
    No ideas anyone??
