Extending the ram with a usb flash memory stick

I heard that it is possible to use a memory usb stick to extend the ram memory in the mac, it this true and how do I do this? I have a 4 gb flash stick and it would be great if I could just plug it in and have more ram!
André

Not possible. A USB memory stick can be used to park files and move them between computers, but that's about it. These devices also operate at a much, much slower speed than built-in memory, so even if this were possible, it would be painfully slow.

  • Cannot share a volume from a USB flash memory stick

    Hi,
I had a small USB disk drive hanging off my iMac for years. At one point I shared it and was able to access it from other Macs at my house.
Recently the drive began to fail, and since it was a small disk, I decided to replace it with a 128GB flash memory stick instead of a mechanical hard drive. I formatted the memory stick as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which is the same way the hard drive is formatted, and I copied all my files onto it.
The new volume works fine on my iMac, but I can't share it. In the Settings, if I try to add the drive as a share, nothing shows up. I can share individual folders on the drive, and they appear to be shared, but they are never visible on any of the remote computers. (Everything is running Mountain Lion).
I can't figure out what could be causing this. I checked and repaired the volume several times, it seems fine, it just won't share.
    Thanks,
    Frank

    Aha, a proper Eureka moment.
Thanks for the tip, and it does exactly what I hoped it would.Thank you, I knew it had to be a simple solution ( too simple for me to work out though ! )

  • Satellite P50-A09M - problems reading USB flash memory sticks

Getting USB sticks as showing up as a empty drive, if you click on it the File Explorer locks up. A reboot fixed it but their are other problems.
I did a System backup on 3 DVD's and seems to run OK, but I thought may be to try a USB2 stick.
Toshiba Brand no good just locked up the Stick had to use the USB stick format utile on my Main W7/32 PC to recover it.
I even tried again with a Sandisk USB3 stick, did the same corrupted the stick having constant problem on reading from USB ports. I tried a 1TB hard drive just locked up the File Explorer, but a reboot was OK..
So have since did a system recovery and then a System backup the USB sticks works no errors, but no software has been loaded..
This is a 5 day old Satellite P50-A09M
I am trying it again with all the Windows updates..

USB Sticks these are 3 good brands
One a Toshiba, the USB 3 Hard drive is a USB 3 Powered Model Imation Apollo M100 Portable Hard Drive
These USB sticks did not show correctly no Size and clicking on the USB Drive, caused the Laptop to lockup, a reboot fixed that problem and the same with the USB3 hard drive.
When I tried to do a system backup it scrambled 2 USB sticks, after a system recovery it worked ok on the same 2 USB sticks.
On my Home made PC yes I am a retired Computer Eng, the 2 scrambled sticks would not format they showed up as being unformatted, I had to use the HP USB format utile to format them.
This PC is about 2 years old running Windows pro 7/32
The Laptop is still have a bit of a problem with a 8GB Lexar USB2 stick the activity Led was flashing all the time seems like the USB port was seeing the stick as being in then out, plugged it in the USB3 port and it was OK.
Been using these USB sticks to transfer data from the Main PC to the laptop.

  • USB flash memory stick - 2 drives mount!

    Hi,
When i insert my new "integral" ice flash drive, 2 drives mount on my desktop. Even disk utility sees them as different disks rather than partitions.
I only want one! Any clues?

  • Unable to boot from my USB Flash Memory Device

    Hi there,
I recently purchased a macbook pro with the lion 10.7.2 firmware.
I am experiencing problems with my USB Flash memory as when i plug it in it comes up fine on the desktop and i can browse it. The problem is that when i open up an application such as Adobe Fireworks or Netbeans (Java programming) and try and access files from my USB flash drive, my drive does not appear on the list/menu, it only comes up with my macbook pro documents etc.
I have asked friends with Mac's and they tell me they do not experience this problem. Please can you help me whether it is a problem with my settings or any other issues.
    Thank you.

Nope, I dont recieve any massages at all. It just doesnt appear.
Also usually you can drag a file into an application, for example drag an image into photoshop in order to open that image up but this does not work either.

  • USB flash memory: "application not found" error

When recently trying to use a USB flash memory stick I was getting an "f:\ application not found" error. I tried all kinds of fixes from Microsoft. Turns out it was caused by Lightroom.
Since the memory stick had photos on it, my computer's Autoplay was trying to launch Lightroom. Problem is, Lightroom is listed as "Lightroom 4.0 64" in the Autoplay menu. I have Lightroom 4.4.  As far as I can tell, there's no way I can fix the incorrect "Lightroom 4.0 64" listing.  The solution is to remove Lightroom from any Autoplay options.
This is the second such problem I've had with Lightroom.  The previous problem was right clicking on a photo file and trying to use the "open with" menu.  It worked fine when I had Lightroom 4.3.  After updating to Lightroom 4.4, it didn't work. Another Lightroom user found a workaround, which was to rename the Lightroom 4.4 folder back to Lightroom 4.3.
These are both lazy Adobe oversights. You have to realize all the Windows functions that will be affected with an update and make sure they are updated as well. I spent half a day solving this latest USB flash memory error. Get your updating act together.

You don't mention your OS or which version of Outlook you're using.

  • I've bought a new USB flash memory. I plugged it in the USB port then a message come out: Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.... Please help...

I don't know what to do. I plugged that USB in both ports but the same message came out. I charged my laptop and the same thing happened again. The surprising thing is that I tried plugging the USB in my cousins laptop (Macbook Pro) and it worked!!! but not with mine. The USB flash memory made by PNY. Please help...

There are two types of USB 2 devices - low power which consume 100 milliamperes or less from the USB bus and high power which consume up to 500 milliamperes. Your flash drive is probably a high power device and is overloading the USB bus of your computer. (Some notebooks can support only low power USB devices.)
I know that my MBP's USB ports support high power devices but I've come across reports that not all high power devices will work on the MBA and that might be the case for your flash drive. My guess is it has a large capacity? 32GB or more?

  • USB Flash Memory Problem with Windows printing...need advice

I recently traveled from the US to the UK with my G4 12" powerbook. In order to print a document (MS PowerPoint), I had to copy the document to my flash memory stick (AVB is the brand which I bought because it's skinny enough to also allow me to use a mouse), put it into a Windows machine's USB port in the hotel business center, and then print from that file.
I had all kinds of problems, where the file would disappear from the memory stick, (and in one heart-stopping moment, from my PB desktop!). I finally borrowed another stick and got the job done, but I don't want to go through that again.
Amy idea as to what happened, or more to the point: What is the "best" brand/type of memory stick to go between Macs (I'm on Tiger)...and Windows? (I only need a 256M capacity; I have small files, but don't mind going bigger if it's more reliable).
Or should I give up on a stick and buy a USB portable hard drive? Or is there some other, better, more reliable solution?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks, Writerdog

I think you're right it sounds like an electrical sound
if you want to change the motherboard like sea dog said look at the MSI catalog to find the one that suits you the most >>HERE<<
personnally I don't know the prices ine Danemark (I buy everything in France) so if you have a link i can try to help,
if it was up to me would take the Z77A-G45-Gaming or GD65-Gaming but if you prefer the normal series i would say GD-55 or GD65 it depends on the prices
PS: for ethical matters i can't speak about other companies in the MSI Forum

  • Making the HIDDEN File(.DS&Trashes) visible in USB FLASH Memory

Mac always has this .DS and TRASHES folder everytime I use my USB Flash memory, and it consumes spaces A LOT. The problem is I cant see it on my PB, so what I discovered was to connect it to a windows computer to erase those hidden files.
Is there a way I can erase/see these files on my Mac? Finding a windows computer is not always easy here, and quite inconvenient. Thanks!

Try this, it works well for me...especially when transferring files between Mac and PC when all those Finder files show up and get very confusing.

  • Toshiba 40SL733g - How to play video files from USB flash memory

When I plug my USB flash memory in USB port, Media Player menu shows up with two options : Photos and Settings.
How do I make my TV recognize and play video files from USB flash memory?
    Flash is on FAT32.
I have tried to play avi, mp4 and mkv files but nothing happens. It looks like flash is empty.
Could you please help me solve this problem.
    Thanks!

bzunic, have you updated the firmware for your model?.
With my own set, (32RL900A), the instruction manual said that certain buttons on the remote control were "unused", however, after the first firmware update, the previously "unused" buttons were used, (In our case, Time Shift, Record, and so on).
The reason I talk about this is, these features became available after a firmware upgrade, and were not mentioned in the user manual, in our case, and a later download of the instruction manual for our model actually gave the instructions for the use of these features, which were shown as "not available", in the original instruction manual supplied with the TV, but became available after the firmware upgrade.
Let us know how it all works out ............

  • Install arch voodoo from usb flash memory

I am interested in anybody crazy enough to try this tutorial I made http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … ash_memory , I tested it with my hardaware and until now it was worked out great, but i am looking for second opinions.
I also posted an updater script that will update the install packages, so you can always carry a freshly updated arch install, anybody willing to test it on any spare usb flash memory or external hd they might have, please do so.
    Cheers!

  • Booting from USB Flash Memory Card Reader on RS480M2-IL (Test Results)

I just completed testing my USB Flash Memory Card Reader (see profile) as a boot device and wanted to provide feedback to the Forum.
A UBS Flash card will show-up on the Advanced Bios Features menu, Hard Disk Boot Priority list, when a Flash card is physically present in a card slot.  It showed as "USB-HDD0 : AFT PRO -8MX CF 0" with a 256MB Compact Flash (CF) card for my test.  Using the enter key on the Hard Disk Boot Priority list allows for ordering priority, which was necessary to place the CF Drive before my real Hard Drive for the card to boot.  When the card is removed, it drops from the list.
I initialized my CF card as a DOS system disk using HP's USB Disk Storage Format Tool v2.0.6 for the test.
Since it is recognized as a Hard Drive, it boots as the C: drive, not A/B Floppy alternative.
I also ran a quick test to see if XP Pro Setup would see the drive.  It does show as my D: drive partitioned FAT.  Too small (256MB) obviously for XP Pro install, but it does present opportunity for larger size flash modules.  My Flash Reader actually has 4 different disk functions/slot groups, so XP Setup acknowledge the presents of those empty three slot groups as "Unknown Disk" on the drive list.
I hope the information is useful for anyone planning a build or looking for alternative boot methodolgy with the board.
This board just gets better and better.

So with a nice size flash memory u could start your box with a key drive and lock up your computer when you leave it unattended.

  • New Keyboard Not Compatible With All USB Flash Drives

    Hi,
I've noticed that the new super-thin iMac keyboards are not compatible with all USB Flash Drives. Here's an example.
I have 2 USB Flash Drives. One is a ByteStor 2GB USB 2.0 High Speed Dataferry Flash Drive, the other is a Kingston DataTraveler 1GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive. Neither of these drives used to work with the previous design of iMac keyboard, giving me the "low power" warning.
However, the ByteStor works just fine with the new super-thin iMac keyboard, but oddly enough, the Kingston DataTraveler doesn't. Does anyone know why this is? What's the difference? When buying a new USB Flash Drive, how do you know if it's compatible with the new iMac keyboard or not?

Thanks. Yeah the Kingston DataTraveler works just fine if I plug it into one of the USB 2.0 ports on the back of the iMac. But if I plug it into the new thin Apple Keyboard, it gives the low power warning.

Anyway, I'll try that new keyboard software update and report back.

  • Cannot play .avi files from USB Flash Memory UHYB-064GH

    Hi,
I have recently bought a 64gb Toshiba Flash Memory Drive (Stick). It's model UHYB-064GH.
Straight out of the box I plugged the USB drive into my Windows PC.
    I'm running Windows Vista.
I tried to transfer a number of .avi video files to the device, taking up about 10gb of space.
I tried running the files (using VLC player) straight from the flash drive. Most of the files wouldn't play.
Only one did but it only played the first 8 seconds of a near 2 hour film.
The counter in the corner only showed the film to be 8 seconds long?!
However the properties section of the file confirmed it was a 1.6gb, 2 hour film...?
I transferred the same video files to a different (old) drive I have and found that it worked fine.
The drive is a FAT32 one.
I don't really know much about these things so would be grateful for any advice
    Tom

Try to format the USB flash memory in NTFS format.
The FAT file format supports files up to 4GB but the NTFS format supports bigger sizes.
