Extensis Suitcase Connection Problem
I was wondering if anyone knows how to solve my problem?
Basically, at my work we have a G4 server that we are all connected to, and I'm looking to run Extensis Suitcase Server from it and distribute fonts to each computer.
Currently I have downloaded the trials of the Client and Server Launcher to the server and installed them.
I have gone through and setup the users and added a couple fonts (and made sets for the client computers to subscribe to)
The problem is that when I try to establish a network connection to the server through Suitcase (on a remote computer through the preferences) it can't find the IP address.
We already have a network connection to a partition on that server with a specific IP Address. I have tried that same address with no luck.
Are there any services that I need to start up within the Server Admin? Is there maybe a setting in the server's preferences that I'm overlooking?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
We're running three Quad G5's and a G4 server. I followed their directions from the Extensis website and installed the Client and Launcher on the server (It specifies that you'll need both.)
When I browse for a server through Suitcase, it doesn't show up. I looked on the server through Server Admin and it shows me connected, is there somewhere I can look to add any services?
Note: the server was setup by someone else, so there may be a setting unchecked or preventing me from connecting somehow.)
Thanks

Need Help!! Extensis Suitcase + Font Problems
Hi guys!
I installed Extensis Suitcase a couple weeks ago and it told me I had numerous duplicates. So I cleaned up my fonts folders after reading some Lang's posts and deleted duplicates. But these last days, I couldn't activate fonts through suitcase. They stayed deactivated as I clicked on'em.
I tought Font Book was the problem so I deleted it, font preferences, cleaned caches, restart, trash can, delete font book. Then XS cause some kind of restart and I was stuck in Darwin with a prompt (/root:). I checked fsck and anyway, I force it to restart with a PRAM reset.
But now Suitcase startup and is initiallizing forever. I can't even access the preferences. What am I supposed to do about that?
PowerMac G4 (Sawtooth) Mac OS X (10.3.9) 896 MB RAMMy Microsoft version is the 2004 one...
Then it's very strange you didn't find the file /Users/yourusername/Library/Caches/.com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
Extensis Suitcase X1
That version works well with OS X. So if you're getting the same hang problem after deleting the preference files, then there must be corrupt fonts (one or more) that are damaging the preference files each time they are built.
Last time I could work with XS, I had something like 1600 fonts. Mostly located in my HD/library/fonts. I don't store any in my user font library. Would it be better? Since I'm the only user, I thought I'd put it on the HD rather than in my user account...how does that sound?
That's not a great number of fonts, but could easily contain one of more corrupt copies. Damaged fonts will bring down any font manager. In a normal setting where you're controlling the fonts manually, the \Library\Fonts\ folder would be fine. There's no advantage for a single user to use that folder over the one in your user account, or visa versa.
Actually, that's part of your problem. Particularly with applications still seeing the fonts you've "disabled". In any of OS X's Fonts folder, fonts are active all the time. That's their purpose. To control them with Suitcase, you don't want any of your fonts in either folder. Leave the system fonts alone, but move all other fonts to a new folder. Then activate/deactivate them with Suitcase from there. That's how it's supposed to be used.
Also, these fonts are grouped in alphabetical order, I have a folder for each letter (first letter) and I file my fonts accordingly. Should I take em out of those folders and have em all directly in the fonts folder?
Nope, doesn't make any difference to OS X or Suitcase if they're in sub folders. But as mentioned, you need to get them out of OS X's Fonts folders. Once you've moved your fonts to a new location, trash the preference files for Suitcase again and restart your Mac. -
IPOD CONNECTIVITY PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS XP VIA USB 2.0
Enough is enough.
I have an ipod touch and I am having difficulty connecting it to my pc via usb 2.0.
I have searched the entire web and came across many cases similar or the same as mine. It's time for apple to face the fact that there is something wrong with either the apple mobile service or the apple usb drivers or the itunes software that causes connectivity problems with win xp.
For the record my case is this:
I got my itouch 3 days ago. I installed itunes 8.0. Then I plugged in my ipod to a usb extension cable port connected to a usb at the back of my desktop computer. At first I got the "this usb device can perform faster if you plug it to a usb 2.0 port etc." message. So I did. I removed the extension cable and connected it directly to one of the usb ports at the back. The first time it synchronized, it seemed fine. So I decided before I do anything with it, to update it to the 2.1 version. I made my account and bought (very bad policy there apple, it should be free or at least cheeper than 8 euro) the 2.1 update. I clicked to update the i-touch. While it was updating it crashed during the restore process (because it was disconnected but I didn't know that at the time). I unplugged it, resetted and plugged it back and managed to continue the restoring process until it was updated. After figuring out itunes I chose the "manage files manually option", kept everything unchecked in the sync options except the applications. I noticed there were random disconnections here and there but I didn't pay much attention because they weren't very frequent.
The next day I plug in the touch again and suddenly I hear that annoying "connecting-disconnecting" sound from windows while my touch kept disappearing and reappearing in itunes. Suddenly my playlists disappeared from the touch. Nothing was in the touch any more. How could that happen since i had chosen to manage my files manually instead of synchronizing? So I unplugged the touch again, restarted the touch, restarted the pc, stopped and restarted the apple mobile service, unistalled and reinstalled itunes, searched microsoft support and read many usb troubleshooting documents in the web. Nothing happened. The touch randomly keeps disconnecting from the usb. I eventually managed to put my stuff back in and keep them there.
Here's what I know:
1) There is nothing wrong with my usb ports. I don't use usb hubs, they are usb 2.0, the voltage (500mA) is correct in the device manager. Everything else works fine there.
2) The ipod touch does not support disk mode so you can't see it under "my computer" and this is not a problem.
3)There is nothing wrong with the ipod, it works perfectly.
4) This is not a usb cable physical problem.
5) The five R's are irrelevant with this situation.
Uninstalling and reinstalling itunes doesn't solve the problem, neither does hard resetting the ipod.
6) Older PC configurations seem to be more affected by this but it doesn't have to do with unsupported specific chipsets.
Here's what needs investigating:
1) There may be a problem with the apple mobile service running on win XP.
2) There may be a problem with the apple usb driver and win XP or older motherboards.
3) There may be a 2.1 firmware issue with usb 2.0 connectivity.
Workaround so you don't go nuts:
Use USB 1.1 instead of 2.0. It is A LOT slower but it keeps the connection stable and you can work with the ipod. Just start copying and go do something else for the next hour. So far it works for me.
This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention. I've stumbled across forum discussions dating to 2005 with this problem (with older ipods of course).I think this needs to be put down to the eternal PC/Mac argument. Apple dont want to fix this as they want everyone to buy a Mac. Its a business, understandable, but in turning away PC buyers they alienate a huge percentage of the market.
Now, I had my first iTouch stolen. It synced, for the most part, very well, just occasionally it removed settings and music, but ticking boxes each time I sync'd sorted that, Its a workflow procedure.
SO, now that my Touch has been replaced, iTunes cannot see it. The PC can identify it on USB1 or USB2, My work lap top can see it and has indeed upgraded it to V2 software, just in case that was the issue, but no. For some really weird reason Itunes on my desktop cannot see the new pod.
This does not make sense with the argument that Apple software doesnt work on a PC, but doesnt help that none of the Apple support staff, phone or in-store have a clue about Windows operations.
Because my Touch has now been trying to connect to 6 separate installs of itunes, multiple USB ports, multiple USB cables, a complete overhaul of the registry settings (everything else still works), and the loss of all my previous settings and backups from the last Touch... but still, the PC says its an ipod but cant install it, iTunes sits there, dumb.
The only thing I can do now is sell the device as brand new as it has never had music on it and is just a week old...
It has changed the MiniMac I was going to have for my new flat screen TV into a PC and suggests that anyone with a PC should stick to devices that run on PC, of which there are many, just without the user interface of the dear departed IPod Touch.
Thanks -
10.4.5 connection problems
I recently upgraded to 10.4.5. When I used 10.3.9 my wireless connection was fast and dependable. Since my upgrade my connection and download speeds are a tenth of what they were using 10.3.9. Looking through these posts I see lots of people are experiencing connectivity problems with 10.4.5. I am almost ready to back up, reformat and go back to 10.3.9. Maybe somebody has some suggestions. My setup is as follows:
1) Cable modem connected to a Linksys Wireless G Access Point.
2) Third party (Buffalo) Wireless G card in the G4 (worked great with 10.3.9).
3) Unencrypted wireless network (my house is far enough from the neighbors that security isn't really a concern).
4) 2 windows computers connected via ethernet cables to the access point.
5) 1 windows computer with a wireless G USB adapter.
6) Wireless bridge connecting game consoles.
Thanks,
RickI have upgraded my network to 10.4.5 and have not experieced any issues with my ibook and my collegues powerbook which connect wirelessly.
I have a cable modem connected to a linksys wifi router without any issues.
However I am not using 3rd party wireless cards. It would sound like the airport driver that ran your card worked better for you under 10.3.9. Rather than revert your OS back to 10.3.9 have you considered using the older airport driver?
There are 2 airport kernel extensions on my 10.4.5 system
/System/Library/AppleAirport.kext
/System/Library/AppleAirport2.kext
You could use a utility such as pacifist to extract the airport.kexts from your panther disk and replace them in your current OS.
This hack may or may not work, I have not tried it myself. I dont endorse hacking systems other than my own or provide a guarantee it will work it is just an idea. So be sure to make a backup of your original extensions. -
Pop-up window "Experiencing Connection Problems!"
The last week or so I have had this window (below) popping up on the top right of my screen. There seems to be no logic to when it appears - it goes away on it's own.
Safari is in the forground. "Block Pop-up Windows" is enabled in preferences.
I don't have connection problems.

Having connection problems with Mail after installing 10.9.4
I upgraded to 10.9.4 a few days ago, and ever since, I've been having connection problems with Mail. First, it stops downloading new mail automatically and second, it won't send any of my messages. When I try to send, I get a message that it is unable to connect.
Quitting Mail and restarting it seems to clear the problem, but then it happens again, maybe an hour or two later.1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Broadband/internet and wireless connection problem...
Towards the end of 2101 I received an email informing me that BT would be upgrading my local line and I could expect a much improved service. Whether this 'upgrade' has been the cause of my problems or is merely coincidental I cannot say. Prior to my experience since this time I could count lost broadband in hours per year (I never had internet or wireless connection problems).
Since the end of 2010 I now regularly lose my broadband completely every six to eight weeks. 'Home Hub cannot connect to broadband.' There is a worsening loss of speed? over a period of two to four days at the end of which I need to phone BT three/four/five, etc. times until they manage to locate the problem and fix it. It is always some problem they find on the line or with their equipment.
I always mention that this is an ongoing problem. Never do they take any action to escalate the issue.
This week things have become considerably worse.
I have started to lose my internet connection now. 'Safari cannot connect to the internet'.
There are now two issues which arise concurrently.
I phoned BT, finally the operative in India (through a very poor BT wireless phone connection) changed the channel of my router for me. He mentioned something about changing the address and password. This seriously exacerbated the situation. My password is not recognised now when I am asked to reconnect by selecting a network.
The next occasion on which I lost my INTERNET connection and tried to reconnect I got the message 'Airport has the self-assigned IP address (...........) and is unable to connect to the internet.
I phoned BT to report this and was told that this indicated an adapter problem and the problem was now out of BT's hands. I Should contact Apple.
I did so. Apple said I should contact BT to change channels. I explained this had caused the problem and they were now refusing to assist me. Apple tried everything that they could think of to resolve the issue (despite not being required to do so). Eventually the only suggestion they could make as BT had refused to help was to reinstall my operating system. Extremely drastic. But I can now connect wirelessly again.
Service is still intermittent requiring constant restarts to regain connections.
BT's response to a formal complaint was more of the usual banal questions, the usual tests, the usual promises of 'something would be done'.
Their systems are not set up to make any sort of accurate diagnosis of customers' issues. They seem to have a set number of 'fixes' into which they try to fit all problems - one would assume simply to save costs - their cost saving exercises are now costing me money.
That's all for starters.
Any suggestions?
Solved!

I have a similar problem, since BT "upgraded my broardband" my home hub looses internet connection at least twice a day and I have to power reset it. the broadband shows as connected but the internet connection is lost, if I try reconnecting it fails and only a power resetr will work. I have a temp solution by fitting a time switch to the mains adaptor and reseting it at 0200 each day. but before the upgrade the home hub had worked for years and no problems. i have also replaced the origonal home hub 1 with a home hub 2 to see if that improves the situation.
welcome to the forum
This subject has been marked as solved by the originator and you will get more response if you start your own subject rather than continue here.
if you start your own subject just cut and paste your post and then in order to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results .
are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Do you have any phone extension sockets in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

InDesign CS5 vs Extensis Suitcase Fusion
Does anybody know if there is a solution for auto activation problems within InDesign CS5, used together with Extensis Suitcase Fuison (v12.1.7)?
The InDesign Plugins for auto activation which go with the Suitcase package go from CS till CS3. With our new CS5 I can't find any Plugin that will make auto activation work. Unfortunately the Extensis website doesn't seem to have a plugin available (anymore). You can't use earlier plugins. If Extensis hasn't updated them then you'll need to upgrade or live without it.
FWIW, I wrote a review of Suitcase Fusion 3 for Creative Pro: http://www.creativepro.com/article/review-extensis-suitcase-fusion-3

Audio/Video connection problem
My system:
iMac G5
2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory
Running on iChat AV 3.1.5 (v440)
I'm having the typical connection problem when I try to video or audio chat with my friend who's using a PC. She's on AIM 6.9, and on my Buddy List it says that she has audio chat capabilities. When I try to audio chat with her, a message comes up saying "(screename) has declined the invitation." And then when I try to audio chat with her, an error message comes up saying this:

Now, I've sifted through this discussion section some and I know this is a common case. So I tried to fix things on my own terms, gathering what other people around here have been suggested. On iChat, the bandwidth is set to No Limit. On iChat's Server Settings (under Account), I changed the port to 443. In System Preferences, I changed Quicktime's streaming speed to 1.5 Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN. And, my firewall is turned off.
But it's still giving me the same errors/messages when I try to audio/video chat.
Help???
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hi Eurostrike,
If it is AIM 5.9 has she "Tuned" it to her camera and Mic ?
Also has she allowed it as an Exception through the XP firewall ?

Client side connection problems with Oracle
Hello,
I'm using JUnit to test my code and am having client connection problems.
Weblogic server 6.1sp2, oracle 8.1.7, win 2000
I create an oracle user on the fly (with a dynamic name) and then need to connect
so I'm getting a direct connection, rather than using a connection pool.
it works fine when run through the container, but when run through JUnit I get the
following error:
java.sql.SQLException: The pool driver only works within the WebLogic server, it
cannot be called directly in a client. Use the t3 driver.
So i changed the code to:
driver = (Driver)Class.
forName("weblogic.jdbc.t3.Driver").newInstance();
from:
driver = (Driver)Class.
forName("weblogic.jdbc.oci.Driver").newInstance();
and now i get this error:
java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver
Any ideas??
Thanks!
SaraHi Sara,
You may want to look at Cactus framework. This is a JUnit extension
for serverside tests. You won't need to care about server/client
configuration:
http://jakarta.apache.org/cactus/index.html

Hi Sree,
Actually, I also have a connection pool, so I am getting connections tothe database
both using the pool (for the static user) and directly for the dynamicusers.
>
Here's the code in the config.xml:
<JDBCConnectionPool CapacityIncrement="2"
DriverName="weblogic.jdbc.oci.Driver" InitialCapacity="6"LoginDelaySeconds="1" MaxCapacity="60"
Name="pics"
Properties="weblogic.oci.cacheRows=500;user=**;password=**;defaultRowPrefetc
h=500;server=nmctest"
RefreshMinutes="10" ShrinkPeriodMinutes="15"
ShrinkingEnabled="true" Targets="nmc2Server"
TestTableName="dual" URL="jdbc:weblogic:oracle"/>
<JDBCTxDataSource EnableTwoPhaseCommit="false"
JNDIName="weblogic.jdbc.jts.pics" Name="pics" PoolName="pics"Targets="nmc2Server"/>
>
And if I change the above DriverName to weblogic.jdbc.pool.Driver the poolno longer
works, and the direct connection (attempted with weblogic.jdbc.oci.Driver)does not
work either.
Thanks for your help!

powerbook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.9)Hi Onenimi,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Your Log says iChat it sent the visible invite and then moved to sending the SIP invite.
(Apple have said iChat is a VoIP application and it uses SIP in accordance with the international standard).
iChat is at this point using a VoIP server run by Apple called SNATMAP.
iChat tells this server to send the INVITE you can see an tell the other end what ports the Video and Audio should be on.
The log says this bit is happening.
What is missing is any reference to the other end responding to this SIP invite.
Top explain further. SIP is a text based protocol that uses port 5060-5063
It is a bit like a telephone call via an exchange.
SNATMAP is the Exchange.
When you click to invite then that is like sending an email (saying "I am going to Phone").
iChat then starts that "phone" call by calling the exchange and saying what ports to use. The SNATMAP server then tries to find the other end in relation to other SIP servers (More specific dialling then emails).
You log says this last bit is not happening.
Most likely it is a Port issue at their end.
If they had a Log it might be helpful to see the top part above Binary Images.
If they used Port Forwarding and DHCP it may pay to see if this is pointing to the IP their computer has now.

Timeouts and connection problems after 5.1(2) upgrade
AIM/chat and some other programs are having timeout/connection problems after upgrade to 5.1(2). I am using S241 also. The connection problems stopped when the IPS was set to bypass. Rebuilt IPS and left sigs at default settings and problem is still happening. I am not seeing any of the IPs that are having the problem in the Event Viewer or on the Events in the IDM.
Any known issues with the 5.1(2) that would cause this type of problem?I don't know specifically, but I did notice that 5.1(3) was released today.

Hi, i am having trouble with my mac mail account, i cannot send or receive any emails because of the server connection problems. Message says it could not be connected to SMTP server. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hello Sue,
I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!

Unending connectivity problems -- and Desktop Help...
I'm wasting so much time on connectivity problems that it's positively wearying. Prior to the installation of BT Infinity here in April, I had a low quality broadband service because of the length of the line from the exchange: if I could get a download speed of 1.2Mbps and an upload of a quarter of that, I was doing well.
BT advised that thanks to fibre optic, my Internet should run much faster. So we had Infinity installed. I'm registered with Speedtest.net so am able to see my performance record.
The average download speed is now aroun d 6Mbps and the average upload, more than that at 7Mbps. How an upload speed can consistently be faster than a download escapes me.
But I'm not familiar with the ways of Internet connectivity and try as a I might, can't get my head around it.
This desktop computer runs Vista OS. Vista was **bleep** when it came out and is renowned for its botched handling of Internet connections. So I'm not blaming BT for the literally unending connectivity problems that are occurring now, with line drops, speeds slowing to a crawl, and no guarantee that any connection will last. But it would be good to actually use BT software to help fathom out what's going wrong here, and today's typical morning which looks like this:
1) Boot up computer. Automatic connection to hub via Netgear USB wireless adapter. Hub is on ground floor of this 3-storey property but signal strength from hub is excellent, as confirmed by inSSIDer monitoring, currently showing 54 with no other networks anywhere near that figure.
2) Perhaps 5 minutes after connection established, it's then lost. 'Local Only' is displayed. This is, apparently, a known Vista problem. But Microsoft has issued a fix for it. I know this, because it took 100 hours of ploughin g the Net to find out that MS had finally admitted to one more Vista screw-up. I've used the Microsoft router "fix it" before and it didn't work ("failed to process") so uninstalled it and have DL'd it again now and run it. This time it says it has fixed everything.
3) Computer is re-booted to make the fix effective. Computer connects to Internet. Speedtest.net check yet again confirms that upload speed is faster than download speed.
4) Connection dies. So much for Microsoft Fix It.
5) Windows diagnostics reports that it can re-set the IP profile (or something.) I click yes. The re-set goes through. Connectivity is restored. 10 minutes later, connectivity is lost. Just a red X in the tray. No connection of any kind, not even that daft 'Local Connection' only alert.
6) Reboot. Yet again. BT Desktop Help was installed here and ran OK when we were using our Netgear DSG34 router. But since the change to the BT Hub, the BT program has never run at all. So-oo. . . It has been uninstalled. And then re-DL'd and re-installed. And though the installation has been completed, clicking on 'launch' has failed to launch anything. But anyway. An hour ago, in one of the brief periods today when the Internet connection was holding up, I Revo-ed out the earlier install, DL'd BT desktop Help and re-installed it. . . and I'm still at the same stage as always, with a Firefox browser page that's open and completely blank and has been for the past 30 minutes. The URL is:
file:///C:/Program%20Files/BT%20Broadband%20Desktop%20Help/btbb/Start.html
Repeated page re-loading gets nowhere. Malwarebytes PRO is turned OFF to prevent any possibility of blocking and the antivirus is termporaily SUSPENDED. This PC runs on Windows standard firewall but even turning that OFF doesn't get the page to load. Copying the address into Internet Explorer in case there's a Firefox problem merely results in Firefox being opened and the same blank page running there.
7) After all that. . . Connection lost yet again and this time, Windows cannot connect at all. It reports that the "wireless network security key is not correct". I happen to know that it is, because this is maybe the 20th time it has reported this in the past 10 days and every time I have to key in the "correct" key all over again. . . at which point Windows still says it isn't correct and cannot repair.
Turning off the computer completely, unplugging from the wall, holding in the power switch for a full minute to clear the circuits, traipsing up and dowen three flights of stairs to turn off the hub, then wait, then turn the power back onm again. . . Ah, wot fun times I'm having here with my particular versioin of Infinity (as in, an infinity of connectivcity problems.)
Summary: I seem to be being simultaneously hit with one issue after another.
I'm bewildered as to why ever since Infinity was installed here, my upload speed is generally faster than my download speed. I'm not happy with endless Internet connection failures though am thinking that Vista is playing a large part here with its "wrong security key" and unending 'Local Only / Limited Connection' failures. I do miss my Netgear router and the ability to access a fantastic help menu and re-boot directly from the desktop without having to keep going up and down three flights of sdtairs to do so (I haven't been able to find out how toe access the BT Hub remotely.)
Above all though: I'm really tired of repeatedly trying to run freshly downloaded and installed BT Desktop Help software but getting no further than a blank page because the program has stalled.
If anyone has any advice / suggestions, other than to buy a carrier pigeon, that'd be much appreciated.
Thanks. Thanks again to John and gg30340. Here's an update:
1) BT Desktop Help removed completely from this computer. The uninstaller itself mopped up everything, which surprised me. But anyway.
2) Bt Home Hub manager set up and working. Had to input serial number and create new password. All of this sounds fairly easy and would be if one had the device near the desk. But the idiots who built this property shoved the BT master socket inside the garage next to the door. Our two home computers are on the third floor. To ensure the wireless signal strength is OK, the Hub and Infinity module/device/whatever it's called are on a high shelf. It's a major job to even reach the darn things, never mind read the labels seeing as how the BT Infinity engineer was good enough to tidy up the cabling and make a very tight connection to the wall socket.
3) I had hoped to be able to back up the Hub's settings, seeing as the software provides for Advanced Settings / System / Backup. But not on mine (Hub 3.0). All that System allows is choosing which internet clock to define the accurate time. Everything else in System is just a pattern of short lines as if trying to indicate that there's some text there but it's invisible. This is now my second encounter with BT software which, for whatever reason, isn't functioning as it should on this PC.
4) Hub reset to factory fresh, according to BT guide.
5) Reset appears to have achieved nothing apart from requiring the password to be popped in again. After reset, it wasn't even possible to connect to the hub manager. Internet connectivity was eventually established for all of 30 seconds and then, gone.
6) Computer was shut down and then booted anew. Internet connectivity is still. . . dreadful. One minute everything's fine and then, literally,. the next minute a webpage won't load. Even opening the Hub Manager has taken three attempts, i.e., disconnecting from the Internet, re-connecting, failing, and trying twice more until success. Yet all the time these failures are occurring, the tray icon is showing a steady, unwavering green icon for Local and Internet access -- despite the fact, there manifestly isn't any.
7) Speedtest. net tests are actually showing upload and download 'trajectories' going slower and slower and finally halting at some point on the arc, then after a period of up to 30 seconds, suddenly becoming animated again. Speed test results with broadband speed checker UK and Think Broadband's checker are so at variance with one another, and with Speedtest, net, that it seems all three are using different technologies in pursuit of the same thing. Either way, upload speeds continue to be much, much faster than download speeds, a state of affairs I certainly have never encountered before.
8) Speedtest net tests taken in the past 10 minutes, with one test following on from its predecessor, begin at 8.24 down/8.88 up, followed by 5.24 down / 6.40 up, followed by a mind-numbingly lonnnnng 0.62 down / 8.70 up -- in other words, a continuous yo-yoin g of Internet connectivity to the pooint that it actually might as well not even be here (I've had to make five attempts just to get on to this forum. . .)
9) BT Speedtest will necessitate disconnection of everything downstairs and all boxes being lugged up here. This is actually going to require uncoililng tied-off cabling and hanging off a stepladder to do so -- though I surely can't be the only person in Britain who doesn't have a nice, handy BT master socket in their study or lounge. That said though: until we switched to Infinity, we *never* experienced these kinds of horrendous connectivity problems and never had need to unplug the Netgear router downstairs and bring it upstairs to connect directly to tjhe desktop PC so BT's own test could be run.
I'll just have to get to work dismantling stuff tomorrow. However, I have to say that after a factory re-set which has changed nothing at all, I'm beginning to think there's a problem with the BT line itself (hence why I'm happy to follow the advice here, though less than happy at the prospect of the messing about involved.)
Thanks, you two, for your patient help, and also for clarifying the situation re the three signal paths being shown on inSSIDer. At least I know that's usual now! And now, hopefully, when I press 'Post', I won't be faced with an endlessly spinning Firefox circle culminating in what may well be, or seem to be, the 57,938th time today of seeing "Page Not Found". . .
