External 144Hz Monitor

Afternoon Apple Community,
I am currently looking into buying a external monitor to my mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I've had my eyes on a BenQ 144Hz monitor for a while, but can my MacBook be used with it or am I limited to 60Hz?
Thank you
Sebastian

  • External NTSC Monitor - 4:3 and 16:9 Question

I'm trying to find a configuration setting in FCP 5.0 when outputting to an external NTSC monitor that will force the image to "letterbox", rather than crop to 4:3.
I have a nice Sony NTSC monitor, but it's not the model that allows switching between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, unfortunately.
I don't want to have to replace this monitor at this time.
I see in the latest version of After Effects I can force the image to "letterbox" in the external monitor. I tested it, and it works perfectly.
Ironically, PhotoShop CS3 does NOT allow you to letterbox your preview to an external monitor. A widescreen formatted file appears cropped in my monitor.
So, my question is can I do this in FCP 5.0? Why am I stuck with a cropped image from a 720x480 aspect ratio? Is there a setting somewhere that will force the preview to letterbox on my monitor?
On a similar note, what will we use to replace NTSC monitors if you're shooting and editing HD?
    Thanks so much.

FCP will not unsqueeze the image for you...you need a monitor that has this option.
what will we use to replace NTSC monitors if you're shooting and editing HD?
And HD monitor. But then you need some sort of HD capture card or output device (unless you are working with DVCPRO HD)...even HDV. And then you will need an HD monitor. The cheapest solution might be the Decklink Intensity and small HDTV...the intensity has HDMI out. But this only works if you have a MacPro. The MATROX MXO is next, and it connects via DVI. It can output a signal to an HDTV (component), or to an Apple Cinema Display or Dell 24" Display. That gets you broadcast quality on a computer monitor...believe it, or not!

  • External NTSC monitor setup

When I use an external NTSC monitor connected to an Apple DVI to video adaptor then to a Radeon 800XT video card I have many crashes. It seems like these are caused by the External monitor setup. I would to know what sort step up others are using for external video. And what kind of success you are having with them.
    Thanks
    Ken

I to have had the same problem, in fact, I just posted about it a few days ago. Hopefully Apple's monitoring this forum and looking at the issue. The only solution I've found is to disable the external preview, which is quite frustrating. Just a question have your crashed happened while you're working or when you perform application switching. I've only had problems when I apple-tab to another program and then do the same to get back into Motion.

  • IMAC output to external NTSC monitor

To see FCE video and audio files from an iMAC on an external NTSC monitor, what is the best way to set this up?
What video/audio convertor boxes are used?
    Bill

If your camcorder doesn't support analog-digital passthrough, you will need an analog-digital converter like the Canopus ADVC-110 to connect your NTSC monitor to your Mac. You'll connect via FireWire from your Mac to the converter, and analog (composite or s-video + audio) from the converter to your NTSC monitor.

  • Playback on External NTSC Monitor

My deck in my non-linear editing system is the Panasonic AG-DV2500. I have always had an external "client monitor" which was a Sony NTSC studio monitor hooked up to the "output" of the deck. This time, I have one of the Sony LCD studio monitors. When I capture, the video in the capture window is in sync with the NTSC monitor. But when I put the captured video on the timeline and play it, the video and audio is out of sync on the external NTSC monitor. What am I doing wrong? There has always been a slight delay between the playback window in Premier and the external monitor, but not like this!

I guess it's more accurate to say that there is a dramatic delay in the video between what I'm seeing in the playback window on my computer monitor and what I'm seeing on the external NTSC monitor. The audio does not have that delay, so on the external monitor the audio and video are out of sync. It makes it difficult to show anyone what you're working on, which is what the "client" monitor is supposed to do.

  • View video on external HD Monitor in PP 5.0.3

Hi, I'm new to Premiere CS5 and I've been searching for a couple of hours and can't figure out how to playback HD video to an external HD monitor within Premiere Pro 5.0.3 and my Blackmagic Design card.  I can see and choose all the Blackmagic presets, view the video in Source and Program monitors in Premiere, but nothing shows up on my Samsung HD monitor. It works in FCP where I can choose from over 2 dozen HD video monitor playback options or Apple Cinema Desktop.  Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
    Jim

Great suggestions. Thanks for your help.  Going back and making sure those settings were in play has given me playback through the Blackmagic card to my monitor!

    Jim

  • Can I use a Dell W3706MC 37" LCD HDTV as an external NTSC Monitor?

    Hello,
I was considering buying this dell TV as a second monitor for my studio as i mostly do audio post production and score music (this size monitor would be excellent for working on scores in my case) on a full time basis but I am expanding into film editing as well.
My question is can i use this as an external NTSC monitor for FCP 4.5HD and version 5? Any help would greatly be appriciated. You can view the tech specs of this TV at http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/lcd_w3706mc?c=ca&cs =CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs

While it might be fine for corporate video or other non-broadcast work, it won't be appropriate for broadcast work. For that you need to buy a broadcast monitor.
The reason is that if you take 20 TVs of various models, and put them side by side (say you went to Circuit City or Best Buy), you wouldn't see the same image twice. They all would be slightly different. Even if you calibrated them, they might all look slightly different. But put 20 broadcast monitors side by side, all calibrated, and you will see exactly the same image and color representation.

  • Satellite Pro U200 - External VGA monitor does not show any output

I have bought this device as used from ebay. It is working fine except that the External VGA connection does not work. I am using win 7 and have it does recognize the external display correctly and I can configure it as an extended display. However the external display does not show anything. The external VGA monitor is fine as it works with other Laptop machines. I have tried using UBUNTU Live CD on this machine and tried to make the external display work (and it can also recongize the external display and configure it) but there is no picture. I also connected the external display to the vga port and then re-booted the machine but still no picture. I have tried changing the bios settings for the display as well but all my actions point to a hardware fault.
I am not sure if it is a manufacturing fault ? Do you know if this issue has been reported earlier to you. Is there a product recall issued for this?
Please advise as I need to connect this external display but am sure that it is a hardware fault with your device.

    Hi buddy,
Have you already tested it with factory settings? I mean the preinstalled Windows from Toshiba with all drivers and tools. If you have the Toshiba recovery disk you should boot from this disk and install Windows with all drivers and tools.
Furthermore you can switch between external and internal monitor using FN+F5 key combination. Does this work?

As i had said, I have an Apple Powerbook G4, and my monitor doesn't function. I have an external display Monitor, however it's stuck in extended screen mode. How do I get it to mirror or duplicate the display without use of the on-board? Is there a Fn key combo i'm missing or is the issue more serious then i realize? any and all help and hints would be greatly apprichiated, thanks in advance.
    -Powerbook User

The PowerBooks have an F-key that toggles mirrored and extended mode. My PB is loaned out right now but I think it was f7. The keycap has an icon on two overlapping rectangles, as I recall.
EDIT: Yes! Found a pdf of the PB manual it shows F7 is the toggle:

  • External LCD Monitor not detected

I've recently just bought a LED monitor and I've tried using the mini-display port to DVI cable and a DVI to VGA cable to connect to my macbook pro to my external LED monitor but it wasn't detected.
Anyone happen to know what the possible issue is? Is it the mini-display port or the DVI to VGA cable?

    Hi texas-rangy,
If you're planning to format the laptop, the Operating System will simply roll back and it will reinstall the original Operating System which is Windows 8. Yes, you can still roll back to Windows 8 as long as the recovery partition is still accessible. This is also the last troubleshooting steps that we do to isolate if the issue if hardware or software. You may check the steps here: How to perform a System Recovery from outside of Windows. We suggest to backup all your important files within Windows and disregard the option Rescue Data on this process.
Once done formatting the unit, test your external monitor. If the monitor works then it is software issue. Proceed with the upgrade process. It is advisable to follow the steps of Upgrading the Operating System from Windows 8 to 8.1. Just follow the link. How do I upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1?
I know this is a long process but we need to consider every step and make sure that we did follow the correct procedures.
    Hope these help.
    Best regard,
    Vincent

  • External LCD Monitor Connection - Unacceptable Quality

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a Mac, hoping that I would be able to connect to my external LCD monitor (19" Samsung SyncMaster 920NW - only VGA connection).
I have easily hooked up my monitor to my Mac. However, what I see is of unacceptable quality. When compared to Macbook display, the display on the external monitor is darker and the text looks horrible. I have played with few settings but nothing good.
I have read other threads where people complain about similar things. But, I thought Samsung's monitors would be of higher quality. Mine is a relatively cheap LCD but not this cheap
I am just willing to confirm that I am not missing anything. I simply can't believe that the display quality could be this bad. In the worst case, I will have to buy a new LCD.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hello stedman1,
Thank you for your quick reply.
Unfortunately, it is not running in the Mirror mode. The display with the mirror mode was even worse! But after reading the posts in the forum, I have learned how to change it to the extended display. It is better than the mirror mode, but still not good enough.
Maybe I am making a mistake comparing the external monitor with the MacBook's monitor?? There is a huge gap between the two. It is a lot darker, and the text quality is way worse.
Someone with a similar monitor having solved this issues?
    Thanks,
    Guven.

  • How can I view on external NTSC monitor in PRCS6?

NOTE: I've aksed this quesion before on this forum and followed the kind suggestions given, however, I have not yet been successful. Note that I can view my timeline on my external broadcast monitor just fine in FCP .. anyone??

    Hi Steven,
    Thanks for jumping in.
I cannot find "Enable Transmit" anywhere under any menu ... just for clarity, I have CS6, not PRCC.
As a side note - not sure why this should be an issue at all, and why it is not readily explained by Adobe ... there does not seem to be any aswers anywhere from Adobe, or online also for that matter. Seriousely, anyone who's an editor is going to want to view their work in an extenral NTSC monitor, and not on the computer display ...
    Many thanks

  • External Preview Monitor

I have searched multiple forums but haven't found the exact answer I am looking for.
Mac Pro Quad Core 2.93, 8GB. Doing one hour projects for local T.V. station. Looking for a method to get a 'external preview monitor' to see what it will actually look like when on T.V.
Looking at this as an option.

Its the DeckLink SDI on this page.

Will this work? Output will probably be to a cheap SD TV.
Sorry if this has been a repeated question, but I could find it.
    Thanks.

If you are working in DV (not SD), a simple analog/DV converter feeding a regular ol' TV will work. Most DV cameras have this capability.

  • External Studio Monitor??

I read the most recent thread regarding this subject but, suppose you are equipping a studio and money is not really that much of an object, then what would you guys suggest as a large screen external studio monitor. Currently we are using a professional JVC CRT monitor that really has worked quite well, just need something that will support the widescreen aspect ratio and will impress the client.
    Thanks
    John

If money is no object, get a very accurate, professional CRT monitor for critical monitoring and a larger, high-end presentation monitor/TV for comparison purposes.
