External 1TB HDD not recognized from PS3

Hi,
I brought a 1TB external yesterday, got home loaded it up, went to plug it in the PS3 via the USB and my PS3 doesnt recognise it. I phoned the computer shop they said I had to format it, so I followed the instructions changing the settings to EXFAT and it still doesnt work.
Can someone in english please help me?

Hi djsi,
Unfortunately I think its hard to say something because here its a Toshiba user to user forum and you should ask this in a PS3 forum for example.
Nobody knows what PS3 and firmware you have and what kind of HDD you have.
So just ask a PS3 expert or in PS3 forum. There you should get a proper answer. ;)

  • External USB HDD not recognized by Time Capsule

Hi, I read that I should be able to extend my Time Capsule 500Gb with an external USB disk, and I bought a 500Gb Maxtor with external Power supply and USB 2 interface. I formatted it as mnentionen in all other threads I've read, but it dont show up in the Disks window in Airport Utility. Tried every combinations of restart procedures, plug/unplu, you name it. I tried vit a 2Gb USB Stick vith the same formatting - no problem, it showed up immediately.
Does the drive/USB interface have to be of a specific type (nothing like that is mentioned in the documentation), but it seems that there is an issue here?

I was having same trouble and finally found a solution by hooking my external drive to my time capsule through a powered USB router. When I did this, the disk was finally recognized. However I received a message from Airport Setup Utility that the external disk needed repair. (it had been formatted to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format previously).
I hooked up the external drive directly to my MBP with USB2 and reformatted/partitioned (1 partition) using the following: "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the GUID partition scheme. (It should NOT be Master Boot Record (MBR).)
I then hooked the external back up to my Time Capsule thru my powered USB hub (it still would not show up using a direct connection) and I am able to see the drive fine now through AirPort Utility and able to archive directly to it. Hooray!
I hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Equium - HDD not recognized from Windows XP

I have replaced the HDD in this laptop because the original had a catastrophic faulure. I have replaced the HDD correctly (as far as I can see) but when I come to re-install Windows XP the HDD cannot be recognised.
    Any ideas?

    Hello Macius
Thanks for that, although I was also assured that my new 120 Gb IDE drive would work too, as it was under the 132 Gb limit.
So I was very interested to see if anyone had actually successfully swapped drives on this model, before spending more on what is a comparatively expensive new drive (byte for byte), compared to larger capacity ones.
The Bios offers no options at all, except to go back to the ancient basic IDE mode, which would be very slow I guess, and using software to reset the reported drive size didn't work either.
So I'm waiting until someone tells me they have personally tried something which really definitely works!
    Thanks again.

  • External hard drive not recognized by OS

External FW HD not recognized by Disk Utility and "not available" to Time Machine.  Had worked fine until last attempt to B.U.  Core Duo, OS10.8.4.  Suggestions to make this drive available again?

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

I can't import my movies to work on them. They are coming from a external hard drive, not directly from the camera, its type mpeg-2 (.mts)
    What can I do ?

    1. Is your external HD connected by firewire?
    2. mpeg2 is the final compressed delivery format of a DVD, not intended for editing, and iMovie cannot handle such files, so you need to convert them first:
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.

  • External HDD not recognized after unsafe removal

    Dear,
Yesterday i bought my first macbook pro. Before i bought that macbook i saved all my data from my windows laptop on my external USB HDD.
Today i connected the external hdd trough USB. the macbook recognized it immediatly but i accidentally removed the usb cable from the disk, so it dissappered.
Now when i connect the usb drive my macbook freezes for a period. After the freeze i don't see the drive.
If i remove the usb cable during the free the macbook comes back alive.
Since i am a newbie on mac i need your help !
    cheers

    Welcome to Mac-land.
This wouldn't happen to be a WD external drive, would it?
Is there some utility on your Windows laptop that you can use to repair the external drive? Something equivalent to Disk Utility on a Mac? I'm not a Windows guy so I don't know.
If the data is still on your Windows laptop, then maybe your Windows machine can erase the drive enough for you to get it to mount on your Mac.
Another option might be to see if your Mac will boot into recovery mode (restart and hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and then maybe Disk Utility (you'll find it when you boot into Recovery Mode) would be able to see the external drive and either repair it or reformat (erase) it.
Occasionally Techtool Pro 7 will be able to repair something that Disk Utility can't. Techtool is a good thing to have; it's the only third party maintenance/repair utility that you need. Techtool installs a repair partition (the eDrive) on your internal hard drive, similar to the recovery partition that is already there with Mavericks. So you might be able to boot into the eDrive and then see the external drive and either repair it or format (erase) it so it will show up under normal boot conditions on your Mac.
It seems less likely, but perhaps your external drive has chosen this time to die. If you can't get it to mount/erase/repair with either machine then that's probably what's going on.
Less likely than that, but still possible, is that the problem is with the external is in the enclosure itself, and not in the drive within, so if you can't get it to work any other way, it's worth a shot to remove the drive and put it in a different enclosure and see if it will work.

  • Lacie 1Tb USB HDD not recognized, even in Disc Utility

    Hi to all,
I have just bought a Lacie 1Tb external USB disk. It did not work correctly under Mac OS X but it works when I use it under Parallels. It is formatted as NTFS and I manage to use correctly under OS X my old Lacie 250 Gb (also NTFS). When I connect the drive to my MacBook Pro nothing happens or sometimes a folder appears on my desktop (with the content of the HDD, read only) and in Finder the HDD is mounted with an icon with a W on it (not the usual orange icon with usb symbol). I cannot use the HDD. If I open Disc Utility the HDD is not shown at all but it appears correctly under System Profile. If I boot with the installation DVD and the USB attached, Disc Utility (launched from the DVD) sees correctly the drive. My conclusion is that there is some software that conflict with Mac OS X in mounting the device. Someone of you has any clue to provide? Is there a way to "reset" the way MAC OS X handles NTFS partitions (if it is a problem with NTFS)? The USB disk works correctly on another Mac with OS X (I tried it at the shop).
Thank you in advance for your help and I wish you all a Happy New Year.

    Thank you for your reply.
At the moment also the other HDD has the same behaviour. It looks like I screwed up the usual NTFS OS X handling What I did was to uninstall Mac Fuse completely (by disabling it and then by removing the icon from System Preferences, as described in the Mac Fuse help page). I had no need to install drivers to make the "old" HDD to work (when it worked . Also when I tested the 1TB HDD on a Mac at the shop, the Mac came with a clean standard install. The worst thing is that Disc Utility completely ignores the HDD presence so I cannot even initialize it. As I said I could initialize it booting with installation DVD but I would like to fix the issue. I removed Mac Fuse I had installed to try to reset the things... with no success I think that, even without any external software to read/write NTFS partitions, I should be able to mount the drive or at least work with it under Disk Utility, shouldn't I?

  • [solved] External Hard Drive Not Recognized

I bought a SATA-to-USB 2.0 external HDD enclosure today (found here), and plugged in a 320gb WD Scorpio Blue. When I first plugged it into my laptop, with Crunchbang Stalter on it, it worked perfectly. I partitioned it and everything. However, I then plugged it into my desktop with Arch on it, kernel version 3.4.4.2, and it was not recognized. lsusb returns nothing related to it, fdisk -l does nothing, and dmesg only displays "fuse init (API version 7.18)". I have tried multiple file systems, set up on my laptop, including ext4, fat32 and ntfs, with absolutely no luck. I would greatly appreciate any help.

I was actually having the same problem with a USB to SATA adapter that only occured on my arch box. When the device was plugged in it showed the event in dmesg and then it got registered as /dev/sde. If I tried to use the mount command though it gave me some error like "could not read from inode" or something like that. After upgrading to kernel 3.4.4-4 the problem seems to have corrected its self now. Are you using systemd or udev?

  • External hard drive not recognized on new macbook

we have an external harddrive that we used as the time machine for our previous imac. we just bought a macbook pro, and the harddrive is not recognized and does not show up on the sidebar. it is however shows up on disk utility but i dont know what to do with it/how to get files from my old time machine. please help! thanks

The hard drive will not show up on the sidebar or desktop unless Finder preferences are set to do that:
In Finder's General preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the list of things to show on the desktop if you want to see them there.
Likewise, in Finder's Sidebar preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the "DEVICES" section to see them automatically appear on the sidebar.
But you don't need to do either for the MBP to recognize the drive, or to get files from its Time Machine backup set. To do that, you should use the Time Machine "Star Wars" interface. Pondini's FAQ's (already mentioned) tell you how to do that. Tip 17 is particularly relevant.

  • External HArd Drive not recognized by MAcBook Air

    Hi,
I bought an external hard drive(from LaCie) few months ago and plugged it once to my Macbook Air. I tried to plug it again last month and my MacBook Air didn't recognize it. I also tried to plug it in a PC and not recognized as well.
I've been told to check in the disk utility folder and to format (erase) my hard drive in order to have it running again, but even in the disk utility, hard drive is not recognized.
If anyone had the same problem before, i'd be gratefull of some help.
    Many thanks

what lacie hard drive did you buy?
some hard drives require power supplies. if your hard drive requires one make sure it's firmly connect at both ends. If you haven't done so try another outlet. Also some lacie hard drives have a 3 mode switch on the back. make sure it's set to on, if your hard drive has a switch.
Some of the lacies hard drives have a blue button on the front. try another cable. see if the hard drive shows up as a USB device.

  • Old external Toshiba HDD not working with Windows 7

I feel as if this problem is going to affect more and more people. Having searched the internet without luck, I felt the need to address the issue here!
I have an external 320GB Toshiba HDD, model: PX1267E-1G32 which Windows 7 (64Bit Professional) does not recognise. It does not show up in my computer and states the device is not working properly. Troubleshooting does not help, and it suggests i have the latest driver for it (version 6.1.7600.16385)
I can not find any support for this device. I have read some people trying to tackle the password protection it comes with (a separate partition with this function) but this is not an issue for me as i never use it. There are drivers on that partition as well which have no affect on windows when i have transferred them via a flash stick.
On my laptop Windows XP is installed and it finds the HDD without any problems. This has lead me to believe there is a fault with compatibility within the newer windows systems. I have tried formatting the drive, reinstalling drivers and searching for a solution. I really can not believe this has not been resolved somewhere and fear with it being an older discontinued product (Mid 2006) there will be little support for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    hi urbancoffy,
    boah what a hell....
let's look if there is a cure.....
this device is recognized under every other system than yours, right?
if so maybe your software is misconfigured or your usb connection is bad....
    how to determine?
try other devices like an usb-stick
check bios if legacy usb support is on
check device manager (device plugged in) if it shows any information like a //dev_xxxx
if your usb port is ok
goto device manager and remove all usb devices (show hidden devices)
reboot and let the system determine the hub etc
plug in usb-hdd and see if it will be detected - keep in mind: you dont have to load a driver for a usb storage device by yourself
if the usb ports are ok and your hdd is recognized by other systems maybe it's time for a recovery of your system....

  • External Firewire HD not recognized by MacPro

I have a Thunderbolt Display that works fine.  However - i just got a WD 2tb Firewire 800 external drive.  I plugged it into the Thunderbolt display and it is not recognized.  No matter what i do.  If i unplug it from back of display and plug directly into Laptop - it sees it fine.
Fairly new to Mac's so am i missing something?  A setting or something?? Thanks for any help.
FYI - laptop is MacBook Pro from 2011 running latest OS.

No, you're not missing anything... it should just work. I have four FW800 drives daisy-chained to my Thunderbolt Display - and they just work. I'm on a 15" late 2011 MBP running 10.8.2 as well.
Something's up - either with your Display, your TB connection or the drive. I suspect the Display or the drive. Is your Display still under warranty? Even if it's not, I would first try it out with a different FW drive (Western Digital is notorious for just not working with Macs) or, if that doesn't work, take the whole unit into your local Apple Store or AASP.
