External 24-Bit Troubleshooting (Audio freezes oft

Hello all, here's a copy of the e-mail I sent to Creative, I thought maybe some of you experts could also lend me a hand.
I'm having serious problems with my Sound Blaster Li've USB 24-Bit External Sound card. When I installed it for the first time, using the drivers from the CD, the audio plays, the only problem is, every time there is system activity, the sound locks up, then resumes after the system stops "thinking." All system activity triggers the sound freezing ? be it opening a program, minimizing, maximizing, reloading a page, surfing the web, anything. I understand that this can be a problem on old computers, but my laptop is brand new, so by all means this should not be a problem. If the system sits there inacti've, solely playing a song, then there is no problem. But any other system activity causes it to freeze in areas, as mentioned. For reference, I have XP professional, GB ram, and a 2.2 GHz AMD Turion processor.
My first attempt at troubleshooting was to check and see if there were updated drivers. First I went to Microsoft Windows update. There were none. I then went to the Creative support page. I downloaded the updated drivers for Windows XP, no difference. The audio freezes up just as often, if not more often, than originally.
I then tried a clean boot, not loading anything other than Microsoft services with Windows. Same deal. Something is causing the sound to lock up everything the computer does anything, which is very frustrating.
Is there any way to prevent this? Or am I going to have to, unfortunately, return my product?
Any and all advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

  • Record External Source (bit/hz config?) Nothing But Static

:Record External Source (bit/hz config?) Nothing But StaticY Okay - I'm ready to be mutilated for posting this, but I've searched for HOURS so feel free to talk to me like I'm a total noob/fi've year old (but a smart fi've year old).
I just purchased the PCI Express X-Fi Xtreme Audio card am I am trying to record the audio from?an external source (my?DirecTV receiver.)? I have the optical cable directly connected from the receiver to the S/PDIF-IN and all other cables (HDMI) disconnected.
    A few questions:
-Do the settings (control panel>sound>recording) for bit/hz have to match those of the Creative MediaSource?
-Can you record directly from a DirecTV HD-DVR?
I've tried a lot of different settings and all I get is NOTHING but white noise/static and?the pitch/rate varies depending on the settings I am using. I'm lost.

    >? <img align="top" width="577[/img] src="http://i44.tinypic.com/2d7zytk.jpg" alt="options" height="440">
I am using console launcher and there you have to set your recording source.......do you see where I have hovered over the recording source where it gives me three choices? Here you can pick yours. If you have the wrong source you will get static. In your sound, recording properties, there you can set your default bitrate.
If you have the wrong recording source, it will sound like white noise, or intermittant jibberish. I have never done a session of which you speak, but I am guessing when you have plugged in your digital satelite, you can try the "What U Hear"? feature to record sound to make sure your sound is being picked up on the PC. Then change your source to pull directly from the digital in.

  • FAQ: How do I troubleshoot audio issues when importing .MTS files?

Hello.   The link FAQ: How do I troubleshoot audio issues when importing .MTS files?
does not work, and i need the answer please. My imported MTS clips are not playing back audio because it seems that no audio imported with the video.   Thanks, Don.

    Hi there
Audio plays when the object with the audio assigned appears. This is why you hear it when the Button appears.
Try assigning the audio instead to the object that appears when you click the button. Perhaps the caption.

  • 8 bit / corrupted audio files on re-opening a song

"8-bit" Corrupted Audio Files On Reload?
    Posted: Aug 18, 2005 10:45 AM
A day after a recording session with my band the other night, I re-opened the song and recieved an error message "What kind of file is this?" and then another... something about the file being "8-bit" and unusable. This is the bass track from a very good session with my band and I'd like to try and recover it. Does anyone know how this happened, how to recover the file, and how to prevent it from happening in the future? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
More info: When opening the file in SoundHack, it says that it is a "Headerless" file. Setting the header to 24 bit linear and saving a copy results in an extremely distorted and unusable file, but you can kind of hear the recording in the background... sped up.

Hello and thanks to all for your replies. Oh and I did in fact copy somebody else's post. Sorry for the confusion.
I had a backup of the song on another disk with which I continued with my mixing. I am not worried about that particular song now. I am just worried that this might happen again.
About my sound/sample library, I just deleted the folders which had corrupted files and copied back from my backup disks.
Dropping corrupted file in a new .lso doesn't work. Haven't tried moving preferences yet but will do. I didn't have a mac before I bought an intel mac.
Can someone explain why this happened in the newest version when this was supposed to have been resolved in an earlier version? Isn't the latest version a cumulative one?
There's one other thing that also happened with me this week. I think it's related:
I had a Logic project open which was set at 96/24 and I had some audio done in it. I tried to open Reason rewired to Logic because I wanted a drum beat from Dr.Rex. Reason was set at 44/16. I tried to open some of the samples from my sound library. The files played just fine but later on when I checked, the folders which I went into looking for that drum beat got corrupted. In fact, it corrupted everything under root folder. It shouldn't have touched my samples at all, right? Why should this happen when I'm trying to just read samples or files?

  • Waiting for file redraws after deleting bits of audio

I keep looking in the prefs for something to alleviate this.
This being, that if I have a big audio file loaded (hundreds to over a gig in size)
and as I'm editing it (going along and deleting sections) most of the time I have to wait a while for the darn waveform to redraw itself.
Sometimes it doesn't do this, less often though, and I'm clueless as to why it behaves this way.
I used to use Peak on my old OS9 machine and it never did this (probably because it always referenced the actual file)
Why does STP do this? Is there a way to not get the waveform to redraw whenever I want to delete a bit of audio?
    Thanks

    Gerald,
your will run into an error during the event afterOpen if there are no documents open and you want to adress the being opened document with
    app.activeDocument.
    You better adress it with
    app.documents[0].
But - funny - if there is already a document opened, then app.documents[0] won't adress the new document (which is opened and calls the event afterOpen), but the old document which has been active before.
So you will have to adress the document which gets opened with
    app.documents[-1].
    (excuse my english)

  • Intermittent video/audio freezes with Quantum Client

I upgraded to Quantum 2 weeks ago.   On my client, I am experiencing intermittent video/audio freezes that last about a second (rewind/replay is normal so it is not a problem with the source material).   I have experienced the problem with both live TV and recorded shows.   Sometimes we can watch an hour or more with no problems then there will be a cluster of 5 or more events, often within less then a minute of each other.   At first I though this was just an audio dropout, but now see it is a problem with both sound/audio -- no pixelation, no blackouts, just screen freezing or going very slow for a second or two.
At the suggestion of Verizon tech support, my connection to the client is all component and digital optical audio (I used to be HDMI for video, but because of my home theater needed to be digital optical for sound).
I have also noticed times where the response to the remote on both the client and server systems slows down with delays.   For example, when watching a show on the server, if I hit the quick (1 minute) rewind key -- I will see the server blink indicating it got the IR command, but nothing happens for 10 seconds or more.  In fact, if I hit the key several times, it will queue up the commands and do a long rewind 10 - 30 seconds after the first remote keypress.
Is this a media server problem?  On my latest call to tech support, they were suspecting a coax issue -- but rewiring my house is neither easy nor cheap.   Plus wouldn't a coax issue manifest problems all of the time as opposed to a quick series of problems in a 5 minute cluster an hour or so into a night's viewing.
I would prefer to keep Quantum; but I have not yet returned my original multi-room DVR setup (that worked fine) and need to determine if this can be fixed or should I just give up and return the Quantum boxes instead.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have actually had a very good experience with Verizon Technical Support.  On my last call, tier 2 support did a remote test of my cable connections and detected a problem.   A technican was then scheduled to come to my house.   The technican addressed 4 problems.
    1.  The client boxes were sent to me without end-caps (signal terminators) for the coax out ports;
    2.  The 4 way spliter needed to be replaced (the original was provided by Verizon);
    3.  The fiber box was not properly grounded;  and
    4.  We moved the cable modem next to the splitter putting it closer to the other units and bypassing a 50' cable run that may or may not have had problems.  -- Of course this last fix had me running cat5e cable to the office where the modem was, but so it goes.
Anyway, after those fixes, my droppout problem appears to have gone away.

  • Audio Freezing

Hi, my audio freezes everytime i preview my menus in encore 2.0 my video is fine but it is just the audio when i play back on the time line it works fine but its when i preview it then the audio starts to freeze in places, i have rendered it and also burned a disc to see if it works out but still the same problem, i created the movie by exporting it through premiere and inserted by asset, i have also tried inserting the movie and the audio seperateratly but still the same.
    Thankyou for your help.

This sounds like a loose coax connection problem.  The symptoms you discribe are often experienced when connectors are not seeting properly, and are often intermittent in nature.  Suggest you start at the STB coax connector and work you way back to the ONT, checking each connector for tightness and proper seating.

  • SB 24-bit Live: Audio to speakers and external record

I'm trying to set everything up so that I can record gameplay to later use in movies. Currently the setup is just from the computer out to a VCR. Everything works fine video wise, but I'm unsure how I can setup the Soundblaster 24-bit Li've! External to output to the two sources (Normal speakers, and the VCR to record).

The Admin of one of the Revolt Fan sites says that revolt get error's all the time, because of my creative soundcard. He helped another person with it, and that person had to change moherboard! I am not sure what a motherboard is, but i don't want to change soundcard. This Soundcard Works soo good. Revolt supports EAX, but the admin says that i should turn it off. It will cause file damage/deleting (only in the "levels" folder)? when getting error message. I Am not sure, what he said because it was a month ago i talked about it. And Also: It is not Exactly Revolt that i am getting errors from, but a kind of patch, that RST (as the Adminstrator is named) made for all who wants Extra features and Windows Vista playing. I will ask him about what is going wrong and what that is required to play it with the "Phoenix R3" as the "patch" is called. If you want, i could take screenshots of the settings of my Soundcard and the settings that revolt supports.

  • External Hard Drive and Audio Recording Application

Hi, hope everyone is doing well today. I'm new to this forum but I have been occasionally browsing it from time to time and find it very useful. So I figured I would post a couple questions that I have.
First of all I would like to tell you all excatly what I want to do with my computer. Currently I am trying to optimize my computer for the Audio Recording Application I have *Cubase SX 3* I recently just upgraded my RAM from 512 KB to 1.5 GB. My next purchased is most definitaly going to be an external hard drive, which leads me to my first question.
    1. If someone could recomend me an external hard drive that is abosolutly amazing for audio recording and such around $150. I would ONLY be using the drive to save my audio files. Definitaly needs to be firewire also.
    2. Next question is. I've heard of people booting from their external hard drives which has nothing but there OS and there audio recording application. That way when they boot it up they don't have processes running "Behind the scenes" and taking up some processor power. Is this true? If so, how would you going about doing this and what would I need?
    3. If anybody else that is reading this is like me and does alot of audio editing on their iMac G5 computer if you could give me some tips in optimizing the performance of the computer in order to get the most out of it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks ahead of time everyone.

    iMac G5 w/o iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   20" screen 2.0 Ghz, 1.5 RAM, 250GB Hard Drive

    1. If someone could recomend me an external hard
drive that is abosolutly amazing for audio recording
and such around $150. I would ONLY be using the
drive to save my audio files. Definitaly needs to be
    firewire also.
Hard drives are pretty much the same. 7200 rpm are obviously a bit faster than 5400rpm. Why Firewire? USB 2 is about the same speed as standard Firewire 400, but the drives are cheaper.
    2. Next question is. I've heard of people booting
from their external hard drives which has nothing but
there OS and there audio recording application. That
way when they boot it up they don't have processes
running "Behind the scenes" and taking up some
processor power. Is this true? If so, how would you
going about doing this and what would I need?
OS processes are going to be running in the background regardless of which disk the OS is on, that's what an OS does! If you don't want more processes simply make sure you don't have any other apps open. I don't know Cubase, but a G5 will handle video editing along with background tasks no problem, and video editing generally involves far more data manipulation than just sound, even if you're doing multiple tracks.
You can easily install the OS on an external hard drive using your original system install disk. Simply connect the drive and choose that as the destination in the installer. To boot from that you would choose it in System preferences/Startup Disk. You could minimise that system by deleting other applications from that drive's Applications folder, turning off internet connections, disabling all widgets etc, but as long as you only have Cubase open it shouldn't make too much difference.
    3. If anybody else that is reading this is like me
and does alot of audio editing on their iMac G5
computer if you could give me some tips in optimizing
the performance of the computer in order to get the
    most out of it.
There's not really much else to optimise. Modern Macs are not like computers of old, and OS X is a very modern system, not requiring the type of disk optimisation etc that there used to be.

  • Troubleshooting a freeze: HP DC7800, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 290, Windows 7

    Hello everyone,
I'm having problems with my HP DC7800 & Windows 7 (fresh install, 64 bit). The video card is NVIDIA Quadro NVS 290.
When any official NVIDIA driver is installed, I can boot into Windows 7, but just a few seconds into reaching the log in screen, there is a brief flicker & everything freezes. Though sometimes, the keyboard does respond: the CapsLock & the NumLock lights on my keyboard respond after a delay of, 5 seconds to 2 minutes.
When rolling back to whatever the default Windows drivers are available before installing the official drivers (WDDM v1.1?), I can't even get to the Windows log-in screen. The monitor displays "No Signal" and it's all blacked out. I have to shut it down with the physical power button.
When going back even further to the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, I can boot into normal mode. Though using the same driver as the one in safe-mode is far from what I'm after.
Also, I should mention that I'm on a multi-boot system with Linux. They are on a separate drive and they can boot with comparitively-minimal problems.
Debian 7.7 with the open-source nouveau drivers work perfectly well.
Ubuntu-Gnome 14.04.1 with nouveau works well. With enough arm-twisting & the right combo of packages, I can get Ubuntu to work with the latest, official proprietary NVIDIA drivers.
Because I can get the NVIDIA card to work in 2 Linux distros, I'm fairly certain that the card is NOT completely broken.
It is the fresh-install of Windows 7 that is giving me trouble.
I've upgraded my BIOS to the latest available: 786F1 v01.32, 7/21/2011.
After updating BIOS, I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling several official drivers (309.00, 331.82, 333.11 & the latest: 341.05) with similar results.
For what it's worth, there is also an HP announcement. Should I update my Video BIOS, as the announcement says? How would I do that?
Other possibly important or irrelevant info:
    * when the NVIDIA card is not in the computer, I connect using the motherboard's VGA slot & I can boot into Windows 7 normal mode perfectly well.
    * when the NVIDIA card is in the computer, I can only boot into Windows safe mode. Booting Windows 7 into normal mode will freeze the computer a few seconds afterlogging in or reaching the login screen.
    * At an earlier point in my troubleshooting, I was getting a BSOD screen, which mentioned the nvlddmkm.sys file.
    * I've looked at my error logs, and they mostly report Event ID 7001 (Service Control Manager) and Event ID 10005 (Distributed DCOM)
    Main questions:
Is there something about updating my Video BIOS, as per the link above, that would help? Or is that video BIOS update included in the whole-system BIOS update to v01.32?
If I can get my computer to work in Windows 7 safe mode, Debian Linux (with open source driver) & Ubuntu (with open source & official proprietary drivers), why can't I get Windows 7 to work in normal mode?
Are there any display-specific error logs that could clue me in? The only error log I know about is the one available through Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.
Are there any alternative, reputable drivers available for the Quadro NVS 290 on Windows 7?
Thank you for your time and please let me know if you need any more info or if there's something else I can do.

When installing that HP Nvidia driver you linked, and even switching to DVI port #1. I got the same results:
boot into Windows normal mode, get to the log-in screen. There's a flicker on the screen & everything freezes.
Hmm, well I went ahead and tried using an official NVIDIA driver in my Ubuntu setup (14.04.1). The packages I installed for Ubuntu were 'nvidia-331-updates' and 'nvidia-331-updates-uvm'.
It works well, as long as I go into my NVIDIA X Server Settings > GPU 0 > PowerMizer > Preferred Mode > Prefer Maximum Performance.
I have to do this immediately after logging in, otherwise Ubuntu will freeze after about a minute.
I can do some moderate gaming, Team Fortress 2, resolution set to 1280x720, after about 15 minutes I log out and see that my GPU temp is 77 Celsius.
With the same configuration, at rest, the GPU is 64-66 Celsius.
Maybe my card is toasted? From my limited understanding of drivers, the official, proprietary driver will enable the more advanced features of the card. This only seems to be a problem when I use the NVIDIA drivers...But please correct me if I'm wrong.
Moderate gaming with open source nouveau drivers on Ubuntu doesn't perform well, but it doesn't crash either.
Anyway, I think I'll go ahead and order another card.
In the meantime, is there a way to configure the NVIDIA card from the command line for Windows normal mode? I'm trying to think of a way to work with it before the Windows GUI is loaded.

I can confirm disabling APSDaemon.exe, aka, new Apple Push for WiFi Sync and renaming (or deleting if you are more risk oriented) APSDaemon.exe and APSDaemon_main.dll in this folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" resolved my issue.
Alternatively, another slightly more annoying but less techy workaround for those nervous about changing filenames is to start iTunes in Safe Mode every time.  You must do it via Programs > iTunes > hold down Ctrl-Shift then click iTunes (does not work if you do it by clicking a short cut in programs list or taskbar, whatever...).  Maybe this disables WiFi Sync by default, dunno.  Don't care at this point, but it seemed to work.
I can live without WiFi Sync for now, but its a nice feature I would really like to use in the future.
