External 500GB USB HDD won't show in my computer

I recently purchased the above named product, which was working fine until the other day when for some unknown reason, the drive no longer appeared on the My computer function.
I followed the troubleshooting guidance/FAQ and this has not resolved the issue. The computer is recognising that the hard drive is there, as it shows up on the list of USB/hardware devices and under removable storage in Computer Mgt (when you right click on my computer and select Manage) but I couldn't go through the troubleshoot/FAQ guidance as the drive isn't accessible.
I fear all my music (recently transferred to it) is lost forever.
Please someone tell me I'm wrong. Any ideas people?
Thanks

Hopefully its not a hardware problem.
Well. Did you try to connect this external HDD to another computer?
If not check this!
In an further step I would recommend to disconnecting the HDD from the notebook and to remove all the USB ports from the device manager.
After new reboot the OS should recognize the USB controllers again and should reinstall the USB drivers.
After this short procedure, try to connect the HDD to the notebook.
I wish you good luck

tried another cable (from a camera) with no joy. However after turning off TM and searching for the EHD and not finding it, I revisited Disk Utility and can 'see' it there. The bad news is that it says,

  • 160 GB external USB HDD won't mount in 10.4.9; does in 10.4.0

I'm using a Beige G3 (though I don't think the model is the issue).
I know there's nothing wrong with the drive whatsoever, because it mounts on PCs, and it mounts when booted from both other hard drives on the system, on Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS 10.4.0.
I know it used to mount on 10.4.9, too. I thought maybe when I installed a 4-port USB 2 card things would resolve, but they haven't.... so I expect it's a driver (extension) issue.
I deleted a bunch of extensions a while back that I was sure I didn't need... I suppose it's possible I deleted one vital for USB HDD support on the HDD using 10.4.9, only I don't know which it would be... things were self-explanatory in the days of OS 9, not so much with OS X, it would seem.
I didn't notice it until fairly recently since I'd been networking to the external HDD via another computer as the built-in 10BT was sadly faster than the USB 1.1 card I had installed prior.
Anyway.... since I assume this is an extensions problem (it says when I turn on the drive that a certain extension is missing, but I can't remember which), can anyone tell me what particular extension it is that enables USB Hard Drives?
By the way, USB flash drives mount and run at USB 2 speeds just fine. Thanks.

It's an adaptec card, but that's actually not the issue; it stopped working on the old USB card where it'd worked just fine before, whilst still working when I booted into 10.4.0.
Once upon a time it was working fine on both 10.4.9 and 10.4.0.
It now says "AppleXsanFilter.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used" when I start up the drive. It knows it's there, it just can't access it. It then says "device was improperly removed" when I shut off the HDD.

man....i know it'll work with power hub, but if i need to hv power hub to start one externall hdd on my mac, well...why do i need that kind of computer the??? c'mon...this is some software issue cuz i can use it at the moment...and i didnt do anything different....just connected my iphone 1st, and then re-connected my hdd and it works...why?? well...i guess that only apple know why...

  • HELP. External hard drive suddenly won't show up on Mac.

So, I left for a few minutes and when I got back, there was that warning on my screen that said the disc wasn't ejected properly, etc. Which was weird because the drive was still plugged in fine. Anyway, when this happens, I usually just pull the hard drive out then plug it back in and it works fine but now it won't show up on the desktop or on the disk utility I got it to show up on disk utility once, but the subheading under the hard drive was greyed out. I could click it but when I tried to run Verify or Repair, nothing would happen. It would show up on the history as "repaired disc" but NOTHING. And I am honestly freaking out Please help, anyone

I'd have to agree with WZZZ. That sounds like either a bad connection, bad cable, or faulty supply. The port could be bad as well but the cable either being bad or not properly plugged in or maybe even worn out. When the "disk ejected" message shows up it's usually because somehow the cable was yanked out of the system while it was plugged in. Intermittenet connections in the cable, particularly in supply lines between the drive and the unit can cause this to happen as well...it's as if you unplugged the external hard drive from the system for a very short time, but the system still picks it up and sees it as bad.

  • External Apple USB Modem won't answer calls

I've just got a new MacPro and I bought the external Apple USB Modem 'cause I use my machine to send and receive faxes. But I just found that the modem doesn't answer phone calls... I can send faxes OK with it, and I'm even able to receive them if I force "manual receive". But it just doen't answer phone calls on its own. All settings are OK and double checked. Always had internal modems with my previous Macs and never had a single fault. I've noticed that Apple posted some software updates that solved problems that arose with phone calls in Ireland. Is it possible that we have such a problem here in Portugal (Apple modem not being properly configured to use our phone lines?)
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks
MacPro Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm having the same problem, with my new Mac Pro, it will send a fax, but will not answer a fax call, Powerbook G4 with internal USB modem will answer fax call on the same line, as well as G4 Silver, however when I connect the Apple usb Modem to the line it fails to answer. I'm sur that it is the Apple external USB Modem, Apple has just given me the run around.

  • When my iPad is connected via USB it won't appear on my computer

When I connect my iPad to any computer it will not sync or even show up it still shows the battery icon

It won't show up in My Computer unless you have photos on it that were taken with it, transferred to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc - in which case it will be treated as a camera so that you have the option of copying those photos off.
In terms of appearing in iTunes have you tried this troubleshooting page : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

  • HELP!! My External HDD won't show up

    Hi all,
I've got a WD external My Book 750GB plugged into my MacBook Pro 13 inch via USB. The drive powers up but never shows on Mac nor on disk utility.
    What should I do?
I have wedding photos from recently which need to be processed and given to clients!
    Thanks,
    Fred

    Hi everyone,
I've got a similar problem, but with a different external HDD, doesn't seem to be too much off-topic though.
I have had a Buffalo 300GB USB external HDD (can't remember the exact model name, but here's a picture http://www.techfuels.com/attachments/storage/530d1203230298-external-hard-disk-b uffalo-300gb-drive-station-hd-hbu2-series-drive.jpg) for a few years now and have never had any problems. I've only got my first Mac about a week ago and when I plug the drive into my Mac it just doesn't show up, although the lights go on and the disk starts spinning. Disc Utility doesn't see it either.
Meanwhile, my home PC, my old Fujitsu Siemens Laptop and my mother's Sony laptop are all able to read it perfectly fine. BUT, and I think this is important, I have used this external drive about a year ago on my friend's Mac to get some stuff and it worked fine. I tried connecting it again to the same Mac a couple of weeks ago and it didn't see the drive (again, lights on, disk spinning)! Using different USB ports or restarting the system didn't help.
    Conclusion:
-the hardrive isn't faulty, because works fine with three Windows computers
-the problem is not with my own Macbook Pro, since another Macbook has the same problem
-since it worked before it can't be that the HDD is intrinsically Mac-incompatible
    Any suggestions?

  • External PC Hard Drive won't show up on my Mac

My friend copied a bunch of files on his home PC to his external USB Hard Drive.
I plugged it in to my USB hub, turned it on, but my Mac won't recognize the drive. It doesn't show anything.
How do I get it to see this drive so I can pull the files off?

Not all USB drives work well with Macs.
    Have you tried direct connect?
Do you have a USB2 controller? one of the first things to add.
Is it FAT32 format? NTFS? something else? You should be able to read both of those.
Have you looked to see if it shows at all in System Profiler or Disk Utility?
How about after a restart with it plugged in and already on?

  • HDD Won't Show on Setup - Not Always

Hello. Here is my problem. Its a weird problem really. One day I powered my Macbook and I was getting a folder with a question mark. I opened the bottom case and checked. Everything seemed fine. I disconnected the hdd and I tested it on another computer. The HDD seemed 100% fine. But for some reason my Macbook wouldn't see the operating system. I disconnected again and formatted and connected again. But it would take forever to boot the Snow Leopard DvD. After booting it wouldn't see the hard drive. After I remove the RAM and power up again and I boot my Windows dvd. It sees the hard drive and I was able to install Windows perfect. I go to sleep and in the morning again it shows the folder with the question mark. Of course I tried another 2 hard drives and another Ram. Everything I tried came up with the same problem. 1 in 10 times it would find the hard drive. Every time it found the hard drive I wasn't able to unmount it through disk utility in Snow Leopard Setup. At one time it wouldn't find the hard drive for 50 consecutive times. Then I load Ubuntu Live cd and I could see the hard drive perfect! I restart and it would say "Disk error blah blah blah", an error from my Windows Installation. I try again Ubuntu Live cd and again I can see the hard drive. I try to install ubuntu but I get an error while formatting. Any suggestion would be perfect. I think it might be the hard drive cable that's causing all the problems. That's what I have tried so far :
    1. Resetting the NVRam.
    2. Tried 3 Hard Drives. All same problem.
    3. Tried 3 different Ram. All same problem.
    4. Tried installing Ubuntu in the external hard drive and then placing inside the Macbook. Wouldn't boot
    5. Tried repairing Hard Drive through Snow Leopard when I could see it. Wouldn't repair, it gave an error.

That is a flex ribbon cable. It is very possible one or more of the actual wires inside the cable are making only intermittent contact, either with the other part of the same wire, providing continuity (this is my guess), or with another wire, causing a short circuit. Although there is no guarantee, my next step would be to replace the cable.

  • Lost power to external HD; Now iPhoto won't show photos

    Hi all,
This is a really easy one. I store all my photo from iPhoto '08 (Version 7.1.5) on an external HD. I accidentally disconnected the power to my external HD and now iPhoto won't load the photos. It created some kind of default folder where there are just 2 photos in it.
How do I tell iPhoto to point to the files on my external HD?
    Thanks

Eject the drive, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /Volumes/ as the path, move any folders inside to the desktop or Trash as desired, and reconnect the drive.

  • My external Seagate hard drive won't show up on my iMac

I've had my Seagate external hard drive connected to my iMac for some time now and have been using it for Time Machine Backups....  Recently I noticed the drive would not show up in the finder and backup began to fail because it couldn't find the drive.

  • My USB drive won't show up on my MacBook Pro (2012 non retina)

Okay, so I have 2 Macs.  2012 MacBook Pro, and a PPC iMac G4. I want to load music onto my USB drive, but it dosen't show up on my MacBook Pro. My iMac can read the USB without a problem, but the MacBook Pro will not. Iv'e made sure to check off everything in Finder Preferences, and also reveal everything in the Finder Side Bar, but still nothing will happen. I even tried looking for it in Disk Utility, and still nothing. Please Help.

Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • USB Mic won't show up in Drivers Menu

I just bought an Audio Technica 2020 USB microphone, and I can't get it to work with Logic Pro 7.2.3.
When I open up the audio/midi setup it is listed there, and it works with other programs, but it doesn't show up in the Driver drop-down list on the Drivers tab in Audio Preferences in Logic Pro.
I even tried setting up various aggregate devices, but none of these show up in Logic Pro. The only 2 things that show up are Built-in Input and Built-in Mic.
I've tried restarting Logic, restarting the computer, and nothing seems to help.
Does it make a difference if this is the academic version?
    Please someone help!!!
    Thanks,
    Justin

In the Audio / Midi settings under the Audio menu, create an aggregate device one for the usb mic and one for the output. Then in your Logic pro settings in the core audio set the aggregate device as the default device.
Well that works LP 8 w/10.5.3

  • USB Printer won't show on client machines anymore

This has happened three times now and the only way I've been able to resolve it is to delete the printer set up on the server and then create a new one.
I have a Canon iP4200 connected to a Power Mac running Server 10.4.8 and the printer is connected via USB.
I set up the print service and check LPR and Show name in Bonjour. Those are the only two settings I use.
After doing this from anew my other Macs will see the printer in the Printer Browser via Bonjour and the printer will add to each computer and each computer can successfully print to it.
Then after a few months you'll print and nothing ever happens. The local machines will just have "printing" going forever, nothing ever shows up on the server.
On the server I can still print to the printer. I can stop the Print service and restart it with no effect. Rebooting the server also has no effect. The only thing that works is to delete the printer on the server and re-set it up.

    - You said "all of my songs I had on Itunes don't show up on my computer but they are still on my iPod.  ". What do you mean by " I had on Itunes don't show up on my computer"? iTune sis on the computer, not on the iPOd.
    - To copy non-iTunes purchases from iPod to to computer yo need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
