External Apple 17" Display issues

I have an Apple 17" Display connected to my Powerbook 1.5Ghz but I no brightness slider shows up in the displays preferences with OsX 10.4.11. Therefore I can't adjust the brightness via software, or the button on the 17".
Also the Powerbook 'appears' to have a slightly magenta tinge to the whites, which I am now used to, but the Apple 17" Display has a slightly yellow tinge to it. I have tried many many 'by eye' calibrations with the Apple's software display calibrator but I cannot get the two to have a similar colour white point.
I'm not going for pro-level calibration, I just want the displays to have a similar color white point.

Good info.
That model monitor has only ADC connectivity. You must be using some form of adaptor? If so, can you provide its details? Does it use the DVI or the s-video ports?
I'm not an expert on ADC but I know it carried video, power, and USB lines concurrently. If your adaptor is not fully emulating the ADC connector functions on an Apple desktop machine with ADC, it could prevent the computer from properly identifying the monitor and offering you the proper options.
Apple recommends this adaptor:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8661LL/B?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjE0NTg4NA
Note it has an extra line and brings its own power supply to the party.
I hope someone with more ADC experience that I can suggest what adaptors work best in your situation, Lacking that, you may have to look for another monitor that does not rely on ADC.

I just bought a Macbook Pro 15inch non-Retina display. I'm trying to connect it to an older Dell monitor I had that is 1600 by 900 resolution. I am trying to mirror the display but don't get a 1600 by 900 resolition when I look at my Macbook Pro display settings. I have a VGA connected to my monitor and macbook using the vga to mini display port. How do I get 1600 by 900 resolution? Do I need a bigger monitor?

  • MacBook Pro Apple Cinema Display issues

I’m using Photoshop CS6 through a MacBook Pro connected to an Apple Cinema Display. Files on display don’t always appear (work area is just blank, interface still there) and when I go to save, the save dialog box is off top of screen to where I can’t see but a small portion of the dialog box. Can’t pull it onto screen. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have a similar situation.  I have spring 2011 macbook pro 17" (MacBookPro8,3).  I was connecting to an older 30" Cinema Display HD, using the Apple dual-link cable with Mini DVI (Thunderbolt) and USB.  I am running 10.6.8.
I was running this configuration for a while (closed lid/"clamshell"), but it stopped working.
I'm pretty sure this is from the "Security Update" that I just installed.
No amount of reboots or cable jiggering helped.
Except this wierd thing:  if I connect the USB and display to the laptop, the display stays dark.  If i disconnect the USB cable connecting the DISPLAY to the CONVERTER, the screen comes up fine.
I just plug the keyboard into the laptop and it works.  Of course, unplugging the CONVERTER USB from the LAPTOP makes it go away (?!).  So I've lost a USB prot with this little hack.
Try messing the USB connections and see if you get any changes.
I have no idea what to make of this bizarre behaviour, but it is making me crazy not being able to reliably use my desk setup with this nice laptop.
I hope someone can offer more data or help.

  • External Benq GL2460 Display Issues

    Hello,
I have the Benq connected via Thunderbolt - HDMI, and here are some very irritating issues I experience:
Audio: When waking the computer up from sleep, it turns the default audio device output to the BenQ monitor. Which i only have muted from the display anyway.
Sleep: When i put my imac to sleep, the BenQ monitor starts to flash blue saying "no input detected" is there anyway to stop it doing this?

    Tmodrich,
I see no reason why the external display has any bearing on the USB port functionality once the machine wakes up. The fact that you can use the keyboard to wake the machine, certainly tells me that the machine has some level of communication with the device.
Curious, do you own a USB mouse or have access to another keyboard (preferably an Apple one)? With that being said, do you own iPod or iPhone? I'm curious if you have that plugged into the machine and go to wake it does the charging functionality of the device get interrupted (after the machine is awake)?
You can also try resetting the SMC, that may (or may not) resolve the issue. But really the next step(s) that I can think of would be to try different peripherals or another type and see if the issue is replicated.

  • Flaky thunderbolt port connection to external Apple LCD display

Is anyone else finding that connecting an external display via the Thunderbolt port requires a lot of pressure on the port, and that the cable has to be wiggled around relatively vigorously to connect? I'm a bit worried about the longevity of the port.

  • Pixelated enlarged screen - display issues related to external hard drive

Hi.  I had an external hard drive plugged into my macbook.  I have a second monitor hooked up.  My screen is pixelated and enlarged (I have to scroll to see the whole desktop).  The icons are rearranged and very blurry. Everything is blurry and enlarged.  My files will open, but they are all blurry as well.  When I noticed these display issues, I realized the mac was not detecting the hard drive that was plugged into the usb port. I  unplugged it and then a LOT of folders with the hard drive name appeared on the desktop and then disappeared.  I know I may have misstepped by unplugging it, but what can I do now?  I have rebooted, shut down, checked zoom and screen resolution settings, and unplugged the monitor.  It's the same when I uplug the second monitor and just view my desktop on the mac.  Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

  • FCP7 2 apple cinema displays & 1 sony HDTV issues

Hello, I am having issues with connecting my 3rd montior which is a SONY HDTV.  I am able to connect all 3 montiors and they all work fine as far as the workspace goes, but one thing I was used to when editing using a SONY DSR-11 was having the 3rd montior, in this case the Sony monitor, as the video ouput monitor, you know, to be able to see what I was editing rather than what I do now wich is drag the canvas window to the SONY monitor and enlarging it.  It's kind of annoying to be honest.  Anyway, anyone out there experience the same issue?  I have an ATI Readeon 5770 card which has the two mini dislay ports for the 2 apple cinema displays and the DVI to HDMI port on the card.  Also, I am able to view the cut on one of the apple cinema displays (i don't want this as i want it on the SONY display) when i hit view>external video>all frames and then for video playback the only options I getr is the apple displays AND its the wrong aspect ratio when i play it but when i pause, it goes back to the aspect ratio i shot it in.   ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

    Turn OFF [√] Mirror Displays
Then you get something like this:
The screens are connected along an edge of your choosing to make one large "Extended desktop". For your sanity, you arrange then in the same way (by dragging the blue boxes that represnt each display) to the same order they are in on your bench.
The mouse moves freely across the divide between screens, and it can carry a window with it. The little white bar is the menuBar, and it can be moved as well.
If you move a window onto another screen, it can be re-sized to fill almost the entire screen. If you split a window across displays, it scrolls and updates "the right way".

  • Apple Cinema Display 23" brightness issue while using with Microsoft Vista

    Hello there,
I have the following issue and was wondering if someone has an idea what the reason is or what can I do to fix this:
I have a 23" Apple Cinema Display running with a MacPro 2,8 GHz. When I switch to PC using BootCamp 2.1 with Windows Vista Service Pack 1 32bit the screen becomes extremely dark.
At first, on the PC side, the display has the correct brightness but after two seconds it switches to a very low brightness setting.
When I go back to the Mac side the brightness setting on my Cinema Display has changed to the lowest point.
I also have a MacBookPro, with Microsoft XP installed also using BootCamp (I cannot find the version of this Boot Camp, but it is an earlier version) to change to PC. In XP, there is a driver installed that allows me to use a slider on the PC to control the monitor brightness. But with Vista this slider is nonexistent.
I already tried changing the graphic's card NVIDIA 8800 driver to see if I can manipulate the brightness on the monitor. I realized there is brigthness slider on the Nvidia driver, but when you make brighter, the colors just get messed up, and the brightness stays as dark as before.
We have lately upgraded to Snow Leopard and had installed Spyder on the Mac side to create a monitor profile for the Cinema Display. I already deleted the profile to see if there is a change. Nothing. I already went back in time on my PC (Restore Point), also nothing.
Could I download a driver for Vista, so that I have a brightness slider on the PC side, so that I can adequately change the brightness to its correct setting.
It is amazing how the lack of correct brightness in a monitor, can ruin your entire working day! Very frustrating!
It would be greatly appreciated if someone has a solution for this issue! Thanks a lot!
    Emil

Okay, I came across a thread that implies there is a problem with using the Apple ADC-to-DVI adapter to attach the older "acrylic" 23" Cinema Display to a Mac Pro DVI graphics card. Basically, the workaround is to NOT use the USB part of the adapter (disconnect it).
    1) In OS X, set the desired display brightness.
    2) Disconnect the USB cable coming from the converter to the Mac.
    3) Restart into Windows.
The brightness setting should now remain as it was under OS X.
Confirmed to work on my Mac Pro v1,1 (dual 2.66 Core 2 Duo) with nVidia GeForce 7300 GT video card running Windows 7 x64.
Link here: <http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=790910> for credit to resolution.
Of course, you lose the functionality of the 2-port built-in USB hub in the Cinema Display, but an external USB hub can make up for that.

  • External display issues with Adobe CC inDesign

Since the latest OSX update (10.10.2), I'm unable to work on my external monitor in Adobe CC inDesign when the display is arranged to the top. The application launches, with menu and toolbars on the external, but fails to open the working document as well. With app frame checked, it shows the document but it's inaccessible – also, tools are pixellated.
Strangely, everything works fine with the external arranged to the left, right or bottom. I've tested it on a 27" apple display – same issue.
    Bizarre and annoying.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013, 2 GHz Intel Core i7) with external DELL S2240L arranged to the top. Running inDesign 2014.1 (10.1.0.71 Build)

I have a similar problem. I'm working on a 15" MacBook Pro with an external 27" Apple Cinema Display. I use the huge external display for the application frame and put my palettes on the laptop's display. The external is to the right of the laptop, and I arranged the displays such that their bottoms are aligned. Since updating to 10.10.2, the application frame jumps part way down the screen (I'm guessing to where its top aligns to the laptop display). This makes the application practically unusable.

  • 10.5.6 Update USELESS!!! External Display Issues Still remain!

The external display issues remain, even after installing the update.
    I'm sick of this!
Is it a hardware issue or software related?
Are the 9600 graphics chips defective?
Come on Apple and be honest to your customers, we all paid a lot of money for these systems!
Does anyone out there know where can I complain to?
I need an email address or something that is not directed at iphones or ipods!
    Cheers.

I'm not sure what to make of this at this point. I ordered a CTO 2.8GHz with 4GB RAM and 320GB HD the day they were announced. First week or so, few if any problems. Then the "UHF" like bands of static began to appear randomly. I use my computer 90% of the time driving an external monitor. I use a separate set up at home and work with duplicates of all cables. The problem occurs on both. I spoke with Apple Care - they patched me over to support and moved me up to Tier one pretty quick, even had me send in my System Profiler information for every combination of screen and graphics card. Then they emailed me a program to capture my monitor info again with every combination of screen and graphics card. No solution. They finally asked to "capture" my computer for their labs and sent me a new one.
Once again, about 2 1/2 weeks of smooth sailing and bam, same issues now occurring. If it's a driver issue, why is everything fine for so long? Also, 10.5.6 and the new firmware have failed to address. Given my above exchanges with Apple, they certainly can't claim they don't know about it.
I've been using Apple Products for a long time. I've seen some real buggy stuff - like when File Vault first came out but this is the worst I've experienced. Seems like poor quality control. If it's a select few machines, I appear to have won the lottery as I've had two of them.
I'm sure this issue is much more wide spread as it is a non-issue if you only use the internal display. Only people consistently driving an external display will even know there is a problem.

Ok, I think I kind of "solved" the problem. The issue has nothing to do with the Apple Cinema Display. I got the chance to hook up another display to that specific PM G5. Happens also with an BenQ TFT.
I think the problem is the installed Radeon 9600 Pro. Gives only black/grey during installation. (even with the 10.5.6 Install Disc)
No big deal so far. Problem solved for me, cause i switched from radeon to a geforce 6800 Ultra DLL.

  • External display issues heat-related?

I have a new late-2008 MacBook, the 2.0 GHz model, and a mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter connected to my several-years-old aluminum Apple Cinema Display. After having no problems for the first couple of days, today on a couple of occasions I've had the same symptoms others are reporting - screen goes black momentarily/intermittently, what looks like horizontal pixel-thin Morse code interference, etc. So far, this has happened when the computer was busy doing a SuperDuper! backup, so I'm wondering if this might be heat-related. If I unplug the external monitor, after a few minutes things are okay again. Right now it's pretty idle, and as it was the first couple of days I'm seeing no problems whatsoever, all of which would be consistent with a heat-related problem - or many other possible explanations, too!
It's a great machine aside from this glitch.
    Doug

Well, in my case it's definitely not a cell phone - I don't have one - nor a cordless phone, since I wasn't using one at the time. My AirPort Extreme base station is immediately below the MacBook, about 2-3 feet, and a Fantom disk drive is nearby.
So far, the only times I've seen this were when I was doing a SuperDuper! backup, partway through it, and when I was doing an initial sync between the new MacBook and my Apple TV (once I figured out how to make that happen.) No browsers, no 23 other things going on, no third-party software involved.
It may be more load-related than heat-related, or it may be neither, but hopefully it'll stay infrequent and easily resolved until a real fix comes along.

  • Apple TV Mirror display issue

I am currently using a 3rd Gen Apple TV with a late 2013 iMac. I can connect to AirPlay display and it automatically connects to "extended display" and the TV screen goes black however I get no options to use as a secondary display. When I click "Mirror display" nothing happens. I have tested on a later Macbook Pro, iPad Mini and iPhone 5 and everything works fine. Both computers are up to date and using OS X Yosemite.

  • My external Apple USB Keyboard letters doesn't work, but the numbers do. Why and how can I fix this issue?

My external Apple USB Keyboard letters doesn't work, but the numbers do. Why and how can I fix this issue? Also, When I open the Keyboard Viewer, the letters will highlight only if I hold the modifier key(s) "Control" or "Control and Option". I really need help with this. • IMac 27" with external Apple 24" LED Display

    Hi,
I want to know if is there a method to sync the brightness of the two monitor. Everytime I have to change the brightness of the first monitor, and after the one of the second...
Another thing. All the two monitors (the imac and the external apple 24 led display) have stereo speakers. Is there a program or an option to listen using all the speakers and not only one ?
    Thank you.
    Alvise Susmel

My understanding is that the mini-DisplayPort out on the new iMacs does not include audio so if you only connected the Apple 24" LED display via mini-Displayport, you won't be using the speakers in the external monitor. If you also plug in the 24" display's USB cable, then I assume you should get audio as well externally but no internal iMac speakers would be active then since System Preferences only allows one sound source/output to be active. I think you know all this. Are you looking for a hack that would allow multiple sound outputs to be active?
