External Apple Keyboards crash the MBP since Leopard -cause found

Since I upgraded the MBP to Leopard, I have had a problem where the External Apple USB key-
board crashes the machine on plug-in. The same thing with the External Bluetooth Keyboard.
The gray curtain would fall, every time, requiring a restart.
While typing up a message to post here, I wanted to accumulate all the details on resident
software, to tell you the full story; turns out I had an old "DoubleCommand" program loaded
at startup, even if I had stopped using it a long time ago.
DoubleCommand is a keyboard re-mapper that I found very useful at some point.
Once this was removed, the problem went away. So instead of another nag, I have written
this little note to register the problem gone.
It may be possible to find a more recent version of DoubleCommand, one that collaborates
with Leopard. I don't use it anymore, so I didn't look for a newer one.

Well, it appears to not be Back to my Mac after all, it appears to be related to Tunnelblick or the version of openvpn its running. Although I have turned the vpn on and over a few times over the last day and everything was fine, today I came home from the office, turned it on, did some work and then turned it off and boom...default route wiped out. This is the system log:

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • Can you plug an external Apple keyboard into a PC?

    Hi all,
Does anyone know whether you can plug an external Apple keyboard into a PC? I presume it would, but I don't want to go and buy one and find out the expensive way that it doesn't. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

I always go for shades of gray, but if you want to it could be a yes (it is not a "no" though).
And Apple keyboards have changed over the years and where you buy, what they carry.... Apple Store is one, another is Amazon, both around $60 but Amazon has the older model I have (and I like to have backup spares too).

  • Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad).  It is a sporadic issue.  Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response.  I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard.  Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard.  Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.
My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.  When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.
Has anyone else witnessed this issue?  Or have an suggestions on correcting?
    Thank you in advance!

I'll jump in here with a 'me too' post. I originally upgraded my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro from Mavs and noticed a very intermittent 2-5 second lag when typing in Mail. I haven't seen any typing delay in other apps.
I have also reinstalled Yosemite from the Recovery partition and it didn't help.
Has anyone spent enough time in Safe Boot (shift key at startup) to see if this text entry delay happens without any 3rd party software? I wonder if we all have some similar 3rd party utility which might be causing this.
My old MacBook Pro does some really slow/janky video stuff while booted in Safe Mode in Yosemite - I assume Apple didn't include some video driver for my old hardware, so SUM isn't a very good test on my machine.
Here's a list of a few third party extensions/software I'm running, in case there is a common thread across our machines:
    Keyboard Maestro (keyboard macros) 6.4.7
    Timbuktu (screen sharing) 8.8.5
    Snapz (screen capture) 2.5.4
    ClipMenu (multiple clipboards) 0.4.3
    1Password 5.0.1
ClamXav 2.6.4 (with Sentry running set to monitor several folders)
    GFXCardStatus 2.3
    Dropbox 2.10.41
    CrashPlan 3.6.4
Anyone with this problem running any of these utilities?
    Kirk out

  • External Hard Drive will the MBP read it?

Hi all, i am about to purchase a MBP 13, and i am concerned about my data. I have a lot of data--92 gigs worth. Last night I put everything, all of it, on a WD My Passpoort Essentials, but its in NTSF format, and my HP is not letting me change the drive's format to anything other than NTFS. I have no problem reformating to HSB#%^???? when I get the MBP, but I just want to make sure i can UNLOAD all my 92 Gigs onto the MBP first. Being in NTSF, will I be able to do that?

OS X 10.6 has, by default, the ability to mount NTFS drives as read only. So yes, you will be able to read that data and thus copy it onto your laptop's drive.
If you want to read AND write to an NTFS there are 3rd party applications that will let you do that (OS X actually can too, if you use some command line codes when mounting it, but its NTFS writing ability seems to be a still-in-work feature).
Once you've copied the stuff off it though, you can use disk utility to reformat it. Use MS-DOS format (Apple-speak for FAT32) if you want to still be able to use it on a windows machine as well as your Mac.

  • Time Machine backup crashes my MBP since I've installed Mountain Lion

    Hello,
I've got a MBP (1.5 years old) and do my back-ups on Time Capsule. Recently I upgraded to Mountain Lion and since then I've come accross some back-up issues:
    1. I've got the error message containing the "sparsebundle already in use" wording
    2. I followed the procedure of unticking (+ reboot) and ticking (+reboot) the "share files" box in the Airport Utility -> Disk section
    3. When I want to launch the backup after that, it always takes about 2 minutes before my MBP crashes and restarts.
Has anyone an idea on what goes wrong or what I would have to modifiy in the settings?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    caraval
PS: another MBP connected to the same TC but still running on Lion performs its backups without problem

    Hi Clinton,
I tried it again (manual launch of backup) and it crashed again.
In the console there's one type of message coming up repeteadly:
9/19/12 8:50:04.508 PM PhotoStreamAgent[203]: [3] MSPublisher - 145909544 Encountered temporary network issues during upload. Will try again later...
Please let me know if you wish the whole bunch of logs (which is taking up a lot of place, don't know what would be the best way to attach it)
Besides, hereafter the error report which is being sent to APPLE. I appreciate your help on that matter.

  • Is there a way to only use external monitor and have the MBP open to keep it cool?

I'd like to be able to just use an external monitor with my MBP due to space limitations, However, when I close the lid on my MBP, it overheats and the fans go crazy, making a terrible racket without cooling the machine :/.
The Screen preferences do not cater for this setup in any way.

Have you tried placing the Mac on a stand? There are even models with fans for greater cooling effect.
AFAIK, there is no air movement thru the keyboard or speaker grilles as the fans do their stuff thru the slot below the lid hinge. Maybe taking one of those "compressed air duster" cans and blasting away on the area may help; every time I've done so on mine a mini desert storm of dust has come out.
What you're trying to use is Clamshell Mode. See if this helps any: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131

  • Ordering a German keyboard for the MBP in the US

    Hi guys,
since I'm used to writing on a German keyboard (I'm from Germany), I'd like to order my new MacBookPro with a German keyboard and OS.
I couldn't find the option in the Apple online store.
Therefore, I'm posting my question here. I greatly appreciate your help!
    Tschüs!

    Welcome to the Forums!
Apple restricts keyboard layouts geographically. In the US, you can only get US and Spanish layouts. You can certainly try calling Apple as um suggests, but I suspect they'll tell you just that. If they do have a way to purchase a German layout, please post back and let us know!
You can buy a "replacement" German keyboard from online parts suppliers, and swap out the keyboard (which will void the warranty), or have an Apple Authorized Service Provider do the swap.
    Hope this helps...

  • What SSD does Apple put in the MBP 13"?

From a couple threads it sounds like they use the Toshiba SSD. Is this true? According to a couple test web sites the Toshiba drive is one of the slowest (like half the speed of most of the drives).

Hi, Dana. There is no way to be sure what SSD Apple might install in an MBP that you order today. It might or might not be the same unit that was in MBPs built a month or two ago, or yesterday. Just as Apple buys its hard drives from several different manufacturers, it may buy SSDs from several manufacturers, or different models from the same manufacturer.
But if it is the Toshiba SSD, then I'm better off getting an SSD of my own and putting it in myself.
Only if it works. There have been quite a few reports here of various SSDs installed by users not working properly, and it isn't completely clear whether there's a single reason why they don't, or several different reasons, or whether there are brands/models that always do or always don't work. Until the dust settles and there's a bit more clarity, if you really want a working SSD in your machine, it may be wisest to have Apple install one, regardless of what make and model it turns out to be.

  • IPhoto 08 crashing on startup since Leopard installation.  Help!!

I had iPhoto 08 working with OS 10.4.11 just fine. Installed Leopard tonight -- ran all software updates. All looks good except iPhoto crashes on startup every time. It looks fine but the second I click anywhere one it (menu, event photo, bar to drag, etc.) it beachballs and crashes. I repaired permissions and when that did not work, I reinstalled iPhoto 08 and went through the software updates. That didn't work either.
    Any ideas? Thanks!!

Might be a preferences issue. I would suggest you create a new, test, account on your system that mimics your own account (as far as permissions/rights are concerned). Try using iPhoto in that account -- do you see the same problem?
If not, then it might be that the preferences that were carried over from Tiger in your old account, or the file/directory permissions that were carried over, are giving iPhoto problems. At least, it will give us another piece of data with which to troubleshoot.
Also, you may want to look in your ~/Library/Logs/ folder for crash reports or other logs that may tell us what is actually causing the application to crash. If nothing is there, check your system.log (you can get to this via the Console application, for example) for clues.

  • Can I buy German Apple keyboard in the US?

I'm learning German and interested in buying the German version of the Apple Aluminum keyboard - MB110D/A. From what I can tell, the US Apple Store only offers US English and Western Spanish. Are there any US retailers that sell the German version of the Apple Aluminum keyboard?

    привет,
super simple: if you are in the USA for any reason, and are not far from the Canadian border, come and visit us Canadians in any large city (Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal), we have plenty of unlocked iPhone 4.
In fact, all our iPhones (starting with the latest 3GS and the iPhone 4 model) are now unlocked. You do have to pay full price, which is no different than the US value at the moment, really. But we have higher taxes (approx. 14-15% depending where).
You should have seen the Americans drive past the border when the iPhone 4 was released here, it was funny. They really do hate the exclusivity with AT&T over there...
Half the lineup on day 1 was a bunch of international and US "visitors" haha
    Best of luck.

  • New Apple keyboard and the keyboard shortcut tab in prefpane ?

    Hi.
So I bought a new Apple "slim" kayboard, I'm pretty happy with it. The only thing I don't get is that I can't access the "keyboard shortcut" tab in the Keyboard and mouse prefpane.
When I click it, the tab turns grey but I can't enter.
    Is it normal?
ps. of course I didn't the keyboard software update.
    Thanks

That's really strange. Are you sure this has to do with the keyboard? Does it misbehave even after restarting the compter? If you remove the keyboard and plug in your old one instead, does this area of System Preferences work normally again?
