External Audio Editor ???

Hi, and thanks in advance for any assistance.
I am a relatively new FCP user, but advanced in A/V production overall.
I want to export audio clips from FCP into STP. I have it set up correctly so STP is my external editor, and when I click a clip in the FCP timeline, it opens STP and loads the audio file automatically. No problem there. However, I want to JUST edit the individual clip that I am using in my timeline, not the entire master audio file that the clip was cut from. I understand that the clip is a "sub-clip" of it's master file, but I thought I would be able to make that clip and "independant clip" and have it become it's own individual audio file. However, when I attempt this, still the entire original audio file opens in STP, making it very difficult to find the in and out points for the individual clip, and causing very long load times on the audio file. What is the right way to do this? To be clear...I have captured a long segment of DV which is in my Browser window, and have cut some small clips from that original file into my timeline. Now I just want to separate that clip into it's own file so that I can edit JUST that clip in STP. Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated...can't find it in the manual or help.
Additionally, I want edit and compose my overall mix in Logic Pro. What is the best work flow procedure to get my individual tracks into Logic, with a scratch video, and then back again? Are there some instructions for integrating the two applications soemwhere? I would love to take my entire movie (including video, just a low quality scratch version for cues) and have it open in Logic....then later, after I have sweetened up the audio, move it back to FCP. I expect this may be more difficult than I think. I can see how I can export indivudal tracks, then export a scratch video, and then later re-import my new mix....but I was hoping there was a more streamlined integration than breaking it down to such individual parts and tasks. Not sure what you all think the best workflow is for this. I notice the Apple website talks about a tight integration between all of their Pro Apps...but not sure if Logic is in that mix, or how best to stragegize it.
Thanks again for helping a relative newbie to FCP.

'allo, Ron!
I don't have Logic so I can't help you there.
As for SP Pro, you've found the thing I hate most about the program and it's supposed integration.
Nevertheless, when you do Send To... the file to an Audio File Project, yes, it loads the whole master clip, but the section your editing should be marked by two vertical lines in the clip. To apply edits to just the section you want, select the area between those two lines and then apply your edits, filters, etc..
Hope that helps.

  • External Audio Editor to compliment GarageBand/Logic

May I ask what other people are using and what people like for editing aiff and wav files. For example, comparing waveforms visually, cutting drum samples and loops quickly, converting aiff/wav to MP3, and doing simple fades, etc.. I realize of course that Logic does all this and GarageBand with iTunes does also, but I am just wanting to know what others are using for quick editing. I used to use Wavelab once upon a time and found that to be just the right compliment to Sonar. Now I use Logic and I have been playing around with Audacity (which is ok) but want to try others. Any suggestions? Also if anyone has any suggestions for applications to compete with T-Racks.

I use both Audacity and Peak; though my version of Peak is now quite long in the tooth (3.x), I think I still prefer it to Audacity somehow!
BTW, this is just a conversion utility, really, but I use it a lot to make sure random audio files are have a sample rate to load into GB decently: <http://www.lcscanada.com/audiomove/>.

  • Aperture 3 -- External Video or Audio Editors

    Howdy,
Has anyone been able to get the external editors Video or Audio to work in Aperture 3?
Aperture 3 video is set to FCP 7.x or Motion
    audio to Soundtrack Pro 3.x
    thanks.

The problem with iMovie, FCP and FCE is that they don't actually edit any files.
When you send a video to any of them it receives them and then what? As they are all non-destructive they simply record your edits in the xml file and go actually see the fruits of your labour you have to export from them. Rather like trying to use Aperture for editing an original file - it's just not designed that way.
QuickTime is a 'destructive' editor in that it actually works on the File itself, and that's why it can be used as an external editor.
    thanks for your comment, tc
if what you're saying is true then using quicktime 10 in it's current version is pointless because it offers nothing that Aperture can't do already & renders that "external video editor" feature in Aperture 3 useless.
those of us that use apple pro apps to make a living are accustom to round-tripping non-destructively into other pro apps (been doing this for over 10 years) which was expected when apple announced that "...Aperture lets you designate separate external editing applications for audio and video clips..."
aperture has never been treated as a pro app the way the other apple pro apps work. i'm still hoping aperture 3 will be.

  • "Open in external sample editor" seems to be broken?

    Hey all,
I'm hoping that someone can help me figure this out. I'm using Logic Pro X 10.0.7 in conjunction with Adobe Audition CS6. This problem seems to happen intermittently, and on some of my machines, but not others. I've also witnessed it on others' machines as well.
When I try to open a region of audio in the external sample editor (For which I've set up Adobe Audtion CS6 to do destructive edits), I can manage to get the file to open correctly in Audition. HOWEVER, when I make my edits in audition and try to SAVE the file in Audition to send it back to Logic Pro X, I get an error message that the file cannot be saved because it is "in use by another application". It's almost as if Logic doesn't release the file to the external sample editor in order for it to be overwritten, and updated.
When I switch back to Logic, after I get the error message, Logic "refreshes" the waveform information, but it's still unchanged, because the external sample editor can't save the changes that I've made to the region. Can anyone relate? Offer me useful tips on how to fix this? Is it a bad configuration on my end, or just a bug in Logic?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Ok so I think I might have figured this out on my own... Apparently, if you highlight a region, and the region is open in Logic's Editor window, while you're trying to edit the region with an external editor like Audition, it will throw the "file is in use by another application" error, when you try to save the changes you've made in the external editor. I found that if I close the "Editor" window in Logic, before trying to open the region in Audition, Audition is then able to save the changes to the file.

  • External sample editor

how do I open an audio file from logic in an external sample editor? I know you can do it, but can't find in the manual how you do this or how to set what the default sample editor is when you open the file in the external editor
    Thanks

There is a key command Search:
    "external"
in the KC window. Assign it. 1st time you use it you will gett a prompt to select the app.

  • External Sample Editor Broken

"To transfer audio edited in the external sample editor back to Logic Pro
Save the file in the external sample editor, then switch back to Logic Pro.
The edited audio will be updated in the Audio Bin and Arrange area, if regions based on the audio file are in use. "
This USED to be true but no longer
I'm using Melodyne Single Track and instead of updating the relevant file in the arrange window I'm having to 'reimport' the tuned file.

  • Multicam and external audio workflow ?

    Gents,
I'm starting a new project and for the first time I have to combine footage from two cameras and an external audio recorder, I just need few hints about the correct workflow to make sure I won't waste time with wrong methods. The event is about 1 hour long (wedding).
CamA has almost the full event, divided in 3 large files (fixed camera, rec always on, divided in 3 because of 29 minutes per clip limitations in EU), I used CamA to fill the gaps between CamB clips.
CamB has more than a hundred clips
Both cam A & B have internal recording but I also recorded the entire event with an external recorder, creating a single .mp3 file.
I need to create a 20/25 minutes video,
What is the best workflow to sync Cam B clips with Cam A ? How would you work with two camera files and the external audio as main and only good audio ?
    Thanks

It doesn't look as though the audio file synced with the other angles.
Open the multiclip in the angle editor from the event broswer. Is the external audio present?

  • Multicam with external audio. Audio disappears on timeline

I'm doing what I've done a hundred times before: Two cameras, external audio.
But this time I'm doing it under Mavericks. Hmmmmmm.
    1. select cam-a, cam-b and audio track, make multicam file.
    2. double click to reveal on screen. Everything's fine, you can see waveforms, plays...everything's normal.
    3. Open New Project on timeline.
    4. hit "e" to advance multileg file to the timeline.
    5. No external audio. It's there in the angle editor, but no waveform, no sound.
I've looked at everything I can think of. Stumped......thoughts?
    Thanks,

I am using earphones, but the external audio of my mini ipad is still on. How can I turn off the external audio while listening with my headset/earphones?

Other than iMovie, GB always incorporates the audio files into the GB package. So just save or move the GB project to the external drive, and you're done - anything you import, edit or record will be saved to the external drive.

  • Can I select an external audio source?

I have  iMovie09 ver 8.0.6.  I'm using a Panasonic video camera (it uses miniDV tapes) connected to my MacBook (white plastic 07) via firewire.  When I have the cable from the mixer going into the camera and recording to tape; when I transfer the tape to MacBook, I get the external audio source great!!!  However, when I plug the cable directly into the MacBook, it still gives me the audio (BUT) from the built-in mic of the camera.  When I open GarabeBand and record the audio, its the external and its great.  However, I don't want to have both recording at the same time only to overlay the GarageBand audio onto the video clip.  Yes, I've selected the 'in-line' option from 'System Preferences'.
Is there a way that I can select the external source while in iMovie??  Looking at some other negative posts, I don't want to upgrade to iMovie 11 either.

I came across a much older post which I believe solved my issue.  I connected everything up first, then booted up the MacBook; then I selected 'built-in audio' from the 'voice-over' option within iMovie.  It recognized it right immediately.  However, now I'm not sure that the audio is in fact coming from the 'hot' microphones that I'm receiving from the mixer.  But that's just troubleshooting.

  • Logic Pro X help: Track/File menu not showing up in audio editor. How to fix?

    Hello,
I am a amature musician that has been using logic pro for a little while now. I recently tried to use the time and pitch machine to stretch a sample to my project length. I open up the audio editor and behold! No file menu. I have looked through all the mues and I cant seem to find it anywhere.
Has anyone experienced this problem and do they know how to fix it?
    Thank you

You are in Track view, where you need to be in File view. Those tabs are just outside of your screenshot, it seems. You must have either an enormous screen or a big screen resolution.
As KC said, flex is a more versatile tool, but if you have a set workflow, then the T&P machine is still there.

  • No Audio Out Of Headphone Or External Audio Output Jacks

We have a Rev. B Bondi iMac that I recently put in my wife's 4th grade classroom for her to use. When trying to hook up external speakers I discovered there is no audio output from the side audio output jack or the front two headphone jacks when listening to the CD player. (I also checked using headphones)
The internal speakers sound fine and normal. I do hear something very distorted and weak from the external audio output jacks but it is so distorted the only way I can tell it is coming from the CD player is by pausing its playing. I have been into OS X now for about 15 months and am starting to forget everything I knew of OS 8.6 which is in the Bondi.
I checked the sound portion of the Monitors and Sound Control panel and all seems set correctly. Is there some other setting that I have forgotten? Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Herb Mesler...
Other than exercising the jack-ports with a plug from a headphone, it may need some expensive repair. However I do have a trick for you to try first.
    Here is my trick;
Computer must be off! Because there is some light voltage applied to the ports they can slightly arch, spoiling the trick. Arching is the root cause of electrical resistance thus not allowing for proper contact and sound will not pass through to the device.
Next take a plug "softly and full travel" through each port in the side and on the front. I repeat them about 5 times. (any proper spec/type of plug, like from a headphone can work. If it from something that is powered, like from speakers, do not use it)
Boot up the computer and test by avoiding the side ports, using only the front ports. Quite frankly I found the use of the side ports to be somewhat the cause of the problem. Mine has been taped off for about 6 years now and I never have had to repeat my trick to date.
Give it a try and post back if there is any questions. Also, I would like to hear your results.

  • How do I get Logic to sync to external audio device?

Here is what I am trying to do:
I have a Big Ben which I want to use to sync everything together. I have Lynx Aurora converters on the way but for now I need to use a 002 rack with a Presonus DigiMax for audio i/o. So basically, I want to connect BIg Ben to 002 with SPDIF cable and to Digimax with Wordclock cable and that all seems to work fine when Logic is off. However I can't get Logic 8 to sync to the Big Ben through the 002 which is used for ins and outs. I can get everything synced by setting Logic to Internal sync and then sending SPDIF from 002 to Big Ben (which syncs externaly to that) and then connecting wordclock out of Big Ben to Digimax. There has got to be a better way.
I have tried setting Logic to external sync ( not exactly sure which method to use since nothing in the manual says that a particular setting is to be used with the i/o except maybe External or Free in Core Audio under Audio Tab on Sync settings - anyway this didn't work). I can use Digidesign CoreAudio Manager to set 002 to SPDIF but whatever I do, Logic doesn't not reflect changes to the clock rate. I someone could guide me on getting Logic to respond to Clock changes from 002R, I can probably get it going from there.
    Thanks,

This is what I have figured out so far. If I turn off Logic, the 002 and Digimax clock just fine from the Big Ben. When clocking Logic from an external audio source (by using external or free under the audio tab of Sync preferences), that when I change timing of Big Ben, the audio changes to indicate it is receiving word clock. Logic throws up errors saying that there is a mismatch from external sync to project settings or some such error message. I can then change the clock in Logic to match what the Big Ben reads and errors go away and things indicate that it is clocked correctly. This seems to work, I am just used to other programs that when I change the clock setting on the Big Ben that they reflect those changes right away.
And yes I can synch the 002 to the Digimaz but it still doesn't work correctly until I manually change the clock setting in Logic as well. I just wonder if this is how things are supposed to work in Logic or if I am doing something wrong? The 002 is just a temporary solution to get me through a session tomorrow. After then I will have a Lynx Aurora 16 connected with the Firewire option and then use the Lynx AES16 PCIe when it is available in a few week (or hopefully not months). I am just trying to get a handle on how Logic syncs to an external converter. And while Syncing and wordclock are maybe not the same thing, under the sync menu is the only spot where I have found wordclock even mentioned (at least it is in the manual when describing what some of the options allow).
