It's called a headphone jack, located on the front edge of the notebook, next to the microphone jack.

  • No Audio Out Of Headphone Or External Audio Output Jacks

We have a Rev. B Bondi iMac that I recently put in my wife's 4th grade classroom for her to use. When trying to hook up external speakers I discovered there is no audio output from the side audio output jack or the front two headphone jacks when listening to the CD player. (I also checked using headphones)
The internal speakers sound fine and normal. I do hear something very distorted and weak from the external audio output jacks but it is so distorted the only way I can tell it is coming from the CD player is by pausing its playing. I have been into OS X now for about 15 months and am starting to forget everything I knew of OS 8.6 which is in the Bondi.
I checked the sound portion of the Monitors and Sound Control panel and all seems set correctly. Is there some other setting that I have forgotten? Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Herb Mesler...
Other than exercising the jack-ports with a plug from a headphone, it may need some expensive repair. However I do have a trick for you to try first.
    Here is my trick;
Computer must be off! Because there is some light voltage applied to the ports they can slightly arch, spoiling the trick. Arching is the root cause of electrical resistance thus not allowing for proper contact and sound will not pass through to the device.
Next take a plug "softly and full travel" through each port in the side and on the front. I repeat them about 5 times. (any proper spec/type of plug, like from a headphone can work. If it from something that is powered, like from speakers, do not use it)
Boot up the computer and test by avoiding the side ports, using only the front ports. Quite frankly I found the use of the side ports to be somewhat the cause of the problem. Mine has been taped off for about 6 years now and I never have had to repeat my trick to date.
Give it a try and post back if there is any questions. Also, I would like to hear your results.

  • External Speaker Static: Problem with audio jack?

I don't believe that anyone on the forums had the same question.
I am having trouble with my macbook pro.  Whenever I plug in external speakers, I get bad static (very loud, about as loud as the speaker's audio itself).  I have tested this on multiple speakers and get the same results on all of them.  When used on another computer, the speakers work fine.  This suggests that it is something wrong with my audio jack for my mac.
I noticed that the 3.5 mm plug doesn't go all the way into the jack.  There is about a millimeter millimeter or two of space This isn't much, but may be resulting in the static.  I have tried forcing the plug all the way in, but it still does not go in.  Any ideas?
I am trying to avoid having to get a bluetooth speaker or anything wireless.

Headphones don't induce grounding problems like external speakers. I am guessing the external speakers were all amplified speakers, with built-in amps and some sort of mains power supply. Perhaps you also have some peripherals such as a display connected to the Macbook Pro.
Try this: disconnect all peripherals from the MBP (including the Magsafe power plug) except the external speakers and see if you get static. I will also guess that the static is more of a whine/buzz that changes whenever the computer does something different.
If this works, then you have a common ground problem. The cheapest way to solve this is a Radio Shack ground loop isolator on the speaker cable,

High fidelity versions are also available, more like $300USD.

  • Equium L20-197: No line-in jack - How to record from an external audio source

    Hi,
I'm generally very pleased with my Equium L20, but am now finding a few annoyances that I guess are cost-cutting issues. For instance, there's no onboard mic, so need to buy one for Voip purposes. And I would like to use this laptop to record from an external audio source, but now discover that there is no line-in jack, and it seems the microphone jack is mono only, even if it was possible to configure the audo card to use this for line-in source.
I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas for a workaround perhaps using a USB port.
    TIA

    Hi R2D2,
Thanks for your quick reply - it set me on the right track and I've been googling for similar solutions available in the UK. I've since found this product - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/flypage/product_id/9326 and redhawk has pointed me at something by Creative Labs which I'll try and track down.

  • Audio Jack in front not working.

Hi, when I bought my HP Pavilion p6823w Desktop PC, from walmart I hooked it up correctly.  When I booted for the first time, I got a Blue Screen of Death, and the problem system repair said it was my IPOD cord was plugged into a USB port.  Without the IPOD hooked up to it.  I couldn't boot up, so I ran the system repair.  the reason I didn't take it back to Wal-mart was because it worked fine without the Internet when I booted up again.  I also bought a Belkin Wireless N Adapter for my Router.  It worked fine with the internet.
Please read the whole thing, because this is all relative to why my audio jack isn't working. Thank you.
Until I started using the internet for long periods of time, I received problems.
For instance, it would disconnect me from the internet without telling me on the bottom side bar, it would tell me it's still working, when I keep getting web pages that are telling me the Internet Server is not found.
Another instance, when playing League of Legends, my latency would go up to 10,000. This is not normal.
The third instance, it would let me still play the game, but have high latency and lag out eventually.
The fourth instance, I cannot download any files on the computer anymore, even if the internet is connected.
The fifth instance, my monitor when it goes to sleep, will only display the background image, without any icons.
This must be a hardware problem, if the monitor won't load the desktop icons or start menu.
To make it work again, I have to turn it off manually with the button, and turn it back on again. And then it works.
I didn't notice this problem till after the 30 days of returning policy to walmart, because I turned off my computer when I was done using it.
The sixth instance, I can disable the network adapter, and re-enable it to make the internet work for a very short period of time, with the same errors of not being able to display web sites.
The seventh instance, I reformatted my computer because I thought it was a virus that norton couldn't find. It still had the same problems, but after the first few days it started up again.
The eighth instance, I received w WinSAT repair, because my game was freezing completely for about one second or two seconds.
The ninth instance, I contacted HP Support VIA Phone, and they could not fix the problem.
I enabled High Performance Power Supply.
    I reset the IP Address.
    I cleaned my temporary files.
I ran Norton Anti-Virus, found nothing.
I ran Hijack This, a program to see what program files are being used.
I ran HITMAN PRO. Found nothing.
I ran firmware updates for my router, is was up to date.
I changed the settings to WEP after, to see if it was the router.
I checked all my other computers to see if it was the internet, it is not the ISP.
I also changed the network name, so the interference with temporary files, wouldn't interfere.
I used other browsers, and had the same problem.
Some websites would load halfway, and need a refresh.
I have not opened the desktop.
I tried exchanging the Belkin Wireless N Adapter, I had an older one I bought before, and when I plug it in, it doesn't recognize the device.
I re-plugged the new one in the USB port, and it worked for a few minutes before returning to the same errors of Internet Server Not Found.
I am confused, because it's not the Wireless N Adapter. My browser, my ISP, my router, my USB port, because the other's work and so does this one.
My reformat didn't work, and I experience this problem everyday, but now downloading files doesn't work even when all other web pages load. This means, there is something wrong with my hardware.  Because the other browsers won't download either.
I'm also using my laptop right now, to make this post, so my internet on all my other computers works fine.
I'm interested if there is a problem with the hardware when I bought the computer, because there is no real fix for this problem.  Each time I get on the phone with TECH SUPPORT, they ask if it's working. And sometimes it does, but then after a few hours it goes back to the same errors. I can't keep calling Tech Support, telling them it's not working when it starts working randomly, then going back to the same errors. Please help!
Also, TECH SUPPORT ignored my monitor problem.  They didn't say anything about how to fix this problem. I hate having to turn off the monitor and turn it back on because this is  a brand new computer. I still have the receipt, warranty and I'm tired of explaining the problem to different people from TECH SUPPORT.
Also, my audio jack in the front doesn't work.

    Hi,
Did you burn a set of the HP Recovery Disks?  You mentioned that the reformat failed. Is that correct? Did you try a full HP Recovery?  If not, then backup your data to external media.  Boot up to the HP Blue screen and first try diagnostics and see how that goes.  If that is successful, then boot again up to the HP blue screen and try Recovery.
If you don't have a set of the HP Recovery Disks and the Recovery process fails from the HP blue screen then you need to order a set of the HP Recovery Disks from HP. HP Recovery Disks.

  • IMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?  Got a brand new iMac and purchased external speakers for same.  Hooked them into external speaker jack and the computer does not recognize the external speaker jack.  I then plugged them into the external head phone jack and the computer recognized the head phone jack.  How can I get the computer to recognize the speaker jack?

Thanks "a brody," my mistake, I was mistaking the "audio in" jack for a speaker output jack.  I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers with a built in amplifier that I am using and they sound beautiful.  I do have them plugged into the correct jack, but was thinking there was a speaker out put and headphone out put.
Thanks again for correcting me, I feel much better now that I know my brand new iMac isn't defective, lol.

  • How do I get the sound to go to an external audio system?

I am having trouvle getting my sound to go to external audio system from Logic Pro?

You need to put in a bit more information about what you're trying to do, and what sort of equipment you're using.
Are you using some sort of audio interface?  If so, is the driver installed, and is it selected as the Output Device under Preferences/Audio/Devices?  Then check under Preferences/Audio/Output, that you've got the desired output selected for your audio interface.
If you're not using an interface, then you want to select "Built In Output" under Devices, and you should be able to run a cable from the headphone jack to your external audio system.

  • Red Light in Audio Jack

I tried to turn up the volume for my internal speakers but it says it can't do it & a red light shines out from the audio jack. If I put external speakers in the audio jack, they will work just fine. Why won't my laptop speakers work?

Some device you plugged into the headphone jack was slightly out-of-spec dimensionally and jammed the jack in the "mute" position. Most people are able to "unstick" the connector by inserting a headphone plug and wiggling gently in the horizontal plane.
Apparently there is a dimensional standard for 1/8" stereo mini-pin plugs that is observed by some manufacturers better than others others. I have a dirt-cheap set of external speakers whose plug fits the jack on my MBP perfectly. Yet I also have a "name-brand" set of headphones whose plug is a little too long and can cause the problem you have if I run the plug in "to the hilt." When i use the headphones, I'm careful to insert them only until I get satisfactory stereo sound. The plug is secure at that point but the stop shoulder on the plug is not touching the side of the MBP at the port.

  • Audio jack port not working

i installed windows 8.1 on my laptop HP 655 and i have high definition audio device drivers installed but i cant hear any sound from my headphone or external speakers when i plug the audio jack in its port. but the internal speakers are working well... please help

    Dear gbonyo -
I understand that after installing Windows 8.1, your speakers and headphones do not work.  Well, that's annoying...  I will try to help.
    - Before going through these steps, make sure that the speakers and headphones are connected to the correct ports. (I know this sounds silly, but sometimes it happens.)
The first and simplest thing to try is the audio playback troubleshooting tool:
    1. With the headphones and speaker plugged in to the laptop, type "troubleshooting" at the Start screen to open the Search charm, and then select Troubleshooting from the search results.
    2. Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio playback and then click Next when the Playing Audio window opens.
    3. A new window opens. Select the device you would like to troubleshoot. Then click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.
    4. If a recommended action displays, select Apply this fix or Skip this step to continue to search for other problems.
If the above does not resolve the problem (and/or it does not find your speakers/headphones) it could be that the laptop does not know that it has speakers/headphones attached to it.
    1. From the Start screen, type "sound" to open the Search charm, and then select sound from the search results.
    2. Click on the Playback tab.
    3. Right-click an empty area of the Sound window.
    4. Click the check boxes to select Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.
If the device is listed as "Currently unavailable" or "Not plugged in," disconnect it, and
then reconnect it from the port.
    5. Test the device by sending a signal from the sound source (For example: Play an mp3 file).
    6. Look at the bars next to the device name on the Playback tab:
If the gray bars next to the line-in audio device name change to green, the device is active and an audio signal is passing through the line-in port. The issue should now be resolved.
If the bars remain gray and inactive, the computer is not recognizing a signal. Leave the Playback tab open and proceed to the next step.
    7. From the Playback tab of the sound window click the port that you want to use (there could be one or more ports).
    8. If the device you want to use contains a small circle with an arrow pointing down, the device is disabled. To enable the device, right-click the device name and select Enable.
    9. Click Set Default to make this device the default line-in audio device.
    10. Click OK to make the changes.
Please let me know if this resolves the problem.  If it doesn't, we can try a couple of other things.
    Sincerely,

after attaching the headset to the audio jack, i get sound from the laptop speaker

This worked for me as well. Great find! I have gigabyte ep45-ud3r motherboard and I was getting all sound through external speakers except itunes was playing the sound out of the digital output instead of the speakers. I could see this when I went to control panel > hardware & sound > manage audio devices. I did the repair as described above and now I have sound in iTunes.

  • Satellite P745 Audio Jack / Headphone jack not working

    Good day to all,
I have recently performed a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate on my Toshiba Satellite P745, and manually installed only important drivers (NVDIA and Intel Graphics, Realtek HD Audio Manager, etc.). I do not prefer the built-in restore factory settings of Toshiba, because I have tried using that before and it only degraded the performance of my laptop. I am using an external speaker instead of the built-in speakers of my laptop, because my harman/kardon is already broken, and after installing Windows 7, everything is working. 3 days after the installation, I cannot hear anything anymore from my external speaker. I tried reinstalling the Realtek HD Audio Manager (its version is 6.0.1.6305), but it still did not work. I tried as well to use other versions of the driver such as 6.01.7368, still it did not work. Lastly, I tried to perform system restore to the date when my speakers were still working, but it did not help at all.
I was also able to verify that my external speaker is not broken, because I was able to use it on my personal desktop, and alternative OS for my laptop which is Ubuntu 14.04.
I would greatly appreciate any help.
I've read on some queries posted here that people are asking for the id of the driver for some reason.

    Hashtanksale,
Not sure about Win 7 ,however, I had a similiar problem with Win 8.1. I wanted to upgrade from a Gateway netbook running XP. I bought a HP x2-k010nr running 8.1 from OfficeMax and it stopped working, died, after 8 hours. Well took it back and exchanged it for another HP x2-k010nr and it lasted two days. The software would listen to the external combo jack mic, however, mostly to the internal mic. Exchanged it for an Asus Transformer and it lasted two days and had the same problem.  Returned it and got a full refund. Seems there is a conflict between Microsoft and their vendors. If possible return your machine ASAP and wait for this issure to be resolved.

  • Intel HD Audio Jack Detection

I have recently got a new computer case with Intel HD Audio so I can plug my headphones in, and not have the sound playing in the back, but I'm having a issue with ALSA cancelling the back audio, not sure if there is a easy fix or not...
Motherboard model is a GIGABYTE EP45T-UD3LR... Intel P45 chipset. Audio Card is a Realtek ALC888 Chipset
All the fixes I have looked at have seemed like to me like they are specific to a laptop, not a general fix.
It's not really that big of a issue if it doesn't work, but it would be nice if I can get it to work.
    Any suggestions?

I have to agree but I doubt most people notice. Not a lot a audiophiles anymore. Intel HD specs are typical of a low costs digital to analog converter. You won't find many laptops that spend a lot on sound quality. Although their are a couple PC's that have certified sound with better sound cards. I would think your Macbook like mine has a optical digital connection through the audio jack. If you really want better D/A conversion you could buy a external D/A converter and connect through the optical output. Personally I use a pair of SkullCandy Hesh 2's and find the sound very good. I certainly have heard worse. At least S/N ratio is pretty good. Some laptops I have had in the past really had some nasty background hiss.

Laptop HP 14d-006La has only one audio jack (mic/headset)
    How can I solve this?
I need to use my headset built-in mic instead of the laptop intengrated mic but it has only 1 audio jack, Can I solve this by software? or at least can I choose wether use the jack as mic or use it as external speaker?
Thanks in advance for any help

    Hi EdgarNaranjo,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP 14-d006la Notebook  and having issues with connecting a microphone. Audio-out (headphone)/Audio-in (microphone) jack connects optional powered stereo speakers, headphones, earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cable. Also connects an optional headset microphone. This jack does not support optional microphone-only devices. Be sure that the device cable has a 4-conductor, a connector that supports both audio-out (headphone) and audio-in (microphone). Here is a document on connecting a microphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I connect my PA to my external audio card M-Audio Fast track Ultra?

    Hello
I wonder if it's able to connect my PA to my external audio card, _M-Audio fast track ultra so that I can use every input from my PA and use them in logic._
    Any Ideas?
    Best regards Frankensten

So I should connect 2 guitar wires from the main outs, left and right to some of my audio card inputs and then Logic should recognize the sounds we are playing on the pa?
    That should work.
Logic wont get any signal from the pa instrument if i don't press the front rear button on the audio card
That's normal. Those buttons control which jacks are active.
    the sound is very low
Connect headphones to the headphones jack on the PA and make sure you're hearing a nice loud signal. You could also connect the headphones to the headphones jack on the Ultra, to check for a signal there.
There are level controls on the front of the Ultra. Try cranking them up. Also, make sure they are pushed in. When you pull them out, you engage a 20dB pad.
Also, look at the LEDs on the front of the Ultra. Are they glowing green? This means they are getting a signal.
In my PA there's two Monitors that I would like to use for logic, how would I do that?
You would connect outputs from your audio interface to inputs on the PA. You could use the channel inputs, or you could use the tape inputs.
