External Burner Problems

I have an External Toshiba ODD-DVD RD-S5272 and have used it to burn hundreds of DVD's in the past.
It no longer is working.
Everytime I place in a new Blank DVD it tells me it is not Writable, even when they are the same discs I have used in the past and the discs are brand spankin' new.
When I look into the System Profiler, everything seems to be okay with the exception of it stating that Burning is now unsupported.
Having checked on some websites, I have been hearing that there is an update of the Firmware that should fix this.
My first question is will a Firmware update fix this problem?
My second question is; having downloaded the drivers for the firmware update, they only come in .exe files and cannot be opened on my Mac. How do you open these files and update the driver?
Any help will be appreciated.
On top of using the Toshiba Burner, both my computers are the Sawtooth G4 and the iMac G3.

Something strange has happened....
The Toshiba Drive is, and has always been DVD+R, DVD+RW. It says so on the front plate, and considering all the DVD+R media I have burned Video onto, it seems that yes indeed it is a + Drive.
However, after using a few various programs to try and figure out the problem with my Burner, I have discovered that + is no longer supported but I can now burn only with - Media discs.
Isn't that a little odd for a DVD+ Drive to no longer stop supporting + media and switch to -?
I tried burning a DVD-R and sure enough it worked.
Would Firmware have anything to do with this strange occurance?
Please respond...

  • External DVD burn problem

I realize I am far behind everyone else here; but here goes.
    I finally got a DVD burner for my G4 iMac (snowball) 1Gig OSX 10.4.11. iDvd v. 6.0.4; iMovie v. 6.0.3.
    It's a (used) Lacie d2 8X.
I tried my hand with iMovie for the first time this Christmas using my digital camera in movie mode. Took a few minutes of the train set running around the tree.
I did pretty good with the clips in iMovie; even adding sound, titles and opening credits.
So, today I put the movie in iDvd; using the share function as instructed.
When I tried to burn the DVD; it went thru the sequence of building the DVD and then failed at the "burn" mode.
So, here are my questions -
Is there a problem burning on the external Lacie drive from iDvd?
I have DVD-R discs; is that a problem?
I tried Toast; but could not drag the iMovie into the the window (it just snapped back)?
The burner is 8X and I bought some 16x discs, is this wrong?
I hope this all makes sense and someone can help me out.
Well, trying something different to get the DVD to record.
I tried this time with Toast 6.
Got BurnPatch. Taost now recognizing the burner after unplugging it and re hooking it up.
I exported the movie as a QT file as directed in the Toast instructions. Drag/drop into the Toast window.
I am getting two error messages -
    "Drive error
    sense key=illegible request
    sense code= 0x30, 0x05
    Cannot write medium
    incompatible format
    and-
Couldn't setup the track for writing
last window (upon closing ) states
"this disc cannot be used because it is not recognized"
Could it be that using the 16x DVD-r discs is causing the problem? Also, they are a 'store brand'. If I need to use 8x; does anyone even carry them anymore?
    Help, please
    Thanks
    Jay

I have an external firewire LaCie Burner and, once connected to my iMac, it does not show up in Disk Utility, but does work. It is recognized in Toast (if connected). I've used it almost exclusively without any problems. I've also tried it with Disk Utility:
Try this: connect the external burner, open Disk Utility, select a disk image (.dmg) and hit the burn button; my Disk Utility then gives me the option to burn with either the external or the Superdrive and tells me to insert a disk. But, unless I've selected an image to burn, there is no indication or icon anywhere in Disk Utility (or on the desktop) that an external burner has been connected. I've always thought that as being a bit strange, but since it does work, I haven't questioned it.
Another possibility might be that you did not install the (correct?) LaCie driver? You might want to check their website, find the latest driver appropriate for your model and Mac OS and follow their install directions. LaCie burners do need drivers installed to be recognized by the OS.

  • External DVD burning problems

Hello. Have a mac G4 dual 867 running Mac OS 10.3.9. I am trying to use iDVD 6 to burn dvds using an external Iomega DVD burner. This used to work fine, but I recently had to reinstall my OS and now iDVD tells me it doesn't read any drive and I can't burn without a Superdrive. I thoght iDVD 5 allowed for external burning. I tried using iDVD Egg.1.dmg, but it didn't work.
Is there a driver or something I need to install to use iDVD?
    thanks
    Frank

you need iDvd6 (not 5) to burn to an ext. S-Drive w/o issues.
I haven't used the following but ..... You are free to try using this along with Patchburn at your own risk:

I'd highly recommend simply upgrading to iDvd6 (makes things much easier):

  • OS X only sometimes recognises my external burner.

Support for third party burners being what it isn't in OS X, I keep coming across this little problem:
I have a LaCie external burner that works a treat when OS X can see it but sometimes it's just not there.
I mean, the system profiler can see it on the firewire chain, it just doesn't see it in Toast.
Obviously iTunes doesn't see it. But it never does, support for third party burners being what it isn't in OS X.
Any idea why this might be?

Ah, well that's a relevant bit of info you left out.
Apple recommends connecting the iPod directly to a FireWire port on the computer, not as part of a FireWire chain or via hub. This is probably due to how much FireWire bandwidth or power (for charging) it consumes. If your optical drive also draws power from the FireWire port (instead of a separate power supply) that could also help explain this. I'd only recommend daisy-chaining FireWire devices that all draw mains power via their own power supplies. Bus-powered devices should probably not be chained, but rather used on dedicated ports.
A potentially related problem has been noted using an iSight and FireWire drives simultaneously, again due to the bandwidth demands the iSight places on the FireWIre bus.
    Good luck!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #42727 on Apple DVD Player requires an internal DVD drive. Are you using DVD Player 4.6 or 4.6.1 or higher? You can find out by going opening DVD Player > About DVD Player.

  • Itunes Burning Problems

I want to burn a large playlist that must be put on 200 or more CDs because of its size. I select the list of tunes and tell the first CD to burn the tunes and I receive a message that I will need to use more than one CD. I indicate O.K. and the first CD burns normally; it's spit out and I'm asked to insert a blank CD. When I do, it burns the first group of selections over again. rather than automatically progressing to the next group of highlighted selections. It has automatically unchecked the later group of tunes although they are still highlighted during the period when the first group is being copied or burned.
Anybody have this problem? Anybody remember the automatic progression to the next group of songs, or am I losing my mind? Anybody have a solution that works automatically?

Thanks man. I don't actually own an MBP yet, but I think my parents are pretty sold on getting me one for college this fall. I just thought I'd ask, since I jsut had problems burning with my iMac. Some threads from the iTunes boards suggested to repait the disc permissions, but I didn't think anything of it... until I tried it last night. It seems to have worked! I do suspect, however, that I'll be getting an external burner (possibly with DL burning), since a 17" isn't really in my future! 15" all the way! Thanks again man, and if anyone else has any expeirences with this, I'd like to hear your opinion!

  • Toast will not burn from internal or external burner

I just burned a batch of DVDs yesterday, then today when I started to burn a new project I heard a loud clumping noise. Then I received an sense error and medium write error. I did a little research on that and everything I read suggested a different brand of DVDs. So I tried that. I'm not getting an error anymore but toast is not even recognizing that I put a DVD in, it just keeps asking for a new blank DVD. I thought it was my external burner but it does the same thing when I switch from external burner to internal burner. Any suggestions? I am about to reinstall TOAST.

There is a hardware problem with my LaCie, I sent it in to be fixed. I also had my super drive replaced now I am able to burn fine.

  • Burn from Imac direct to external burner

How can I burn directly from my Imac CD player disc insert to my external CD burner? I can do it on my PC with no problem using Record Now program. Is there a program I can use to accomplish this? Or am I only limited to creating an image in the Imac, then burning to an extenal burner? It takes too long. On my PC I can insert a recorded disc in one slot.....put in a blank CD into the other slot........and burn disc to disc direct. Help!!!

Thanx.........I downloaded Burn, but couldn't figure out how to use it in the burner to external burner application. Plus there was no "help" button or online manual. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can see how to use it AFTER you create an image file. I don't want to have to take all of the time to create a file, then burn from that file. I have a recording studio and sometimes I need to make a quick copy from a disc. On PC you just put in one disc....then one into the burner and the copy disc to disc. I am new to Mac and find it far superior to my PC. I record through Logic Pro 9, Reason and Ableton so I am not a newby. I have a stand alone external burner USB'd to my new 27" quad core Imac. Are there any free programs I can download or is there a setting internally to OS X 10.6.2 that I need to change to get this simple job done?

  • Please recommend best DVD burning program and external burner

My FCPX "Share" will no longer burn a DVD on my MacPro 1,1 via the "DVD" destination. However I can send it to "Master File" and it will make a high quality .mov file. I've then tested using Roxio Toast on a 2 minute .mov clip and it did burn a DVD, but the quality was very, very poor. (Much worse than the DVD that I used to be able to get via FCPX Share).
Your thoughts on: 1) Why does FCPX --> Share --> DVD no longer work/ how to fix it?  and 2) Can you recommend the best DVD burning program and external burner? With thanks! Duncan

Toast should give you the highest possible quality so you are obviously doing something wrong.
The only thing I don't like about Toast are the menus  .  .  .  which are total rubbish compared with iDVD.
You should also be able to burn DVDs from FCP X so once again you are either doing something wrong or there is a problem with your FCP X setup or computer.
Try trashing the preferences  using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Possibly mundane Mini-DVI to VGA into an external monitor problem

    Hi,
I've had a look over the interwebs regarding my problem and it seems as if it's not unusual to have external monitor problems but I'm not sure if mine is slightly different:
I had a perfectly working set up with my new Macbook (the white one, '06 model I believe), that was connected to my Hanns-G HU196D monitor via a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, no problems whatsoever. But for a couple of weeks now my Macbook just flickers a light blue colour, with nothing at all on the monitor, and my macbook is unusable until I remove the adapter. I've read about updating firmware but I can't see my desktop once the macbook is connected to the monitor so it's not possible to configure anything. I've read somewhere that my external monitor isn't compatible with this set up, but it was until a couple of weeks ago!
My Macbook's 4 months old now and since then I've bought a new mini-dvi to vga adapter and a new VGA cable, no connections seem loose on either mini-dvi port or my monitor's vga port.
    Thanks if you can help!
    Jack

You will need to use a mini Dvi-dvi and a dvi-svideo/rca adapter.
    Joy joy hallelujah.
Pardon the sarcasm...I just wasted 3 hours of my life trying to sort the issue out.
Heard a KWORLD PlusTV PCTOTV Converter SA235 USB 2.0 Interface would sort the issue out for under 40$ but it's not Mac.
    Hope that helps.

  • Fans run full speed on stand-by and burner problem iMac 24-inch early 2009

In standby sometimes the fans are running at full speed. Also with burning some CD or DVD's the burner makes an awful grunting sound.
For a 2 year old Mac I did not expect to have these kind of problems!
Resetting the iMac does not help. Might this be a Lion problem?
Optical Drive is running at 4800rpm, normal 798rpm
Hard Drive at 5903rpm, normal 1599rpm
    CPU at 3598rpm normal, 1200rpm
The burning problem only happens sometimes, not with all.

What did you do to reset the imac? Problems like these are "sometimes" solved with an SMC reset.

  • In Search of a Quiet External Burner

Now that my internal super drive is failing, I'm considering a more robust external burner as a back-up to my internal burner (which is still under waranty and will be replaced). In the past, the external burners I've had were quite loud. The LaCie I had was the worst. Sounded like a jet taking off when it started up. Can anyone offer suggestions? Thanks.

Here is some info from a DVD ripping/burning site that may prove helpful: I'm using a Pioneer 106D (flashed to get full speed burning) in a LaCie box, which is fairly quiet. the info below is for a Pioneer 111, which cannot currently be flashed by a Mac, but which seems to be a good burner. Hope this helps. (Lot cheaper than others.)
With Macs, we like to stick with FireWire optical drive input when going external. And for the record, my favorite external case is FireWire/USB 2.0...it has both abilities. I was searching all over the 'Net a couple of days ago, looking for the best price on the case I prefer, and I found it for $31.15 plus shipping here:
    http://www.pcsforeveryone.com/productinfo.php?cPath=1843&productsid=50720
That's for the generic version of the case, but it's identical to my Bytecc case that's sitting here on top of my G5 tower. As long as it has a product ID number of ME-340U2F, it's made identical to the Bytecc case, I found out, so that saves everybody about $7.
The Pioneer DVR-110D is actually preferred over the DVR-111D for RIPping because there's firmware available for it on the Mac side, where the 111D has to be flashed on a PC at this time. Trouble is finding one! So unless a miracle occurs we're stuck with recommending the DVR-111D. The 2nd cheapest price I could find, $31.99, is for the DVR-111D with a beige bezel (opposed to black):
    http://supermediastore.com/pioneer-dvr-111d-16x-dvd-burner-bulk-beige.html
The black bezel DVR-111D-BK is $38.69 with free UPS Ground shipping:
    http://supermediastore.com/pioneer-dvr-111d-16x-dvd-burner-bulk-black.html
Those two prices are excellent, but if you want to score the case and the drive at one place, for convenience, newegg.com has the Bytecc case (in black only) for $40, and the drive for $31.82 plus shipping/tax. Your choice.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145360
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=dvr-111d& Submit=ENE&N=0&Ntk=all&Go.x=0&Go.y=0
Both Pioneer drives are identical mechanically, it's just the case bezel color that differs. The ME-340U2F case is all aluminum with a built-in double ball bearing 40mm cooling fan, an internal power supply (no power brick), and it comes with both USB and FireWire cables with all the screws necessary to mount an optical drive and secure the case. We like to use FireWire with Macs because the throughput is superior to USB 2.0 on a practical level, not theoretical. Supposedly, USB 2.0 yields up to 480Mb/second and FireWire is 400MB/second, but actual measurement gives the edge to FireWire.

  • Burn problem - "internal target failure"

Can anybody help me with a burn problem that is driving me crazy, especially as I am a recent migrant from Windows. Every time I burn in iDVD from an iMovie I get the error message at the burn stage, i.e. after 2 hours encoding etc. "The recording device reported the hardware error: internal target failure (0x44,0x00)". This is after reporting the problem to my dealer and having the Superdrive replaced under guarantee. Any ideas gratefully received.

    Welcome to iDVD Discussions.
That may be a media/burning speed issue.
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/image_to_diskstone.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)
