External commands in runtime exec

Im trying to run commands from the Sleuthkit in a java GUI. These commands have no problem running from the konsole as all the paths etc. have been set up, but when I try to run them with the java runtime exec() they wont work. Similarly,i run standard linux commands in this gui aswell and they run without problem.
Any ideas whats weong?
Thanks.

You didn't tell us exactly what you're doing.Its a forensic GUI that runs konsole based commands
and displays the ouput in a JText areaThat tells us nothing useful. By "exactly what you're doing," I mean the Java code and the command it's exec()ing.
>
You didn't tell us what "doesn't work" means.The 'basic' linux commands work fine in the gui, its
just the sleuthkit ones that wont run or return
anything when executed using the runtime exec(). Even
though running these commands in a konsole works
fine. THis means all paths have been set.
Any ideas on a different way to run them or should I
include more than just the command used on the
konsole?That still doesn't tell us what "doesn't work" means.
My previous response still applies.

  • Interact with extern process by Runtime.exec()

    Hi,
    I want interact with a extern process by Runtime.exec(), but I don't Know the way for introduce the params required for the extern process.
    So, Is posible, interact with the extern process from Java?
    Thanks

    Exactly, I would like to know how exec can pass a PIN
    number when the proccess already has been launched. Sounds like you're doing it through the process' stdin. Read that article I linked.
    You'll have to call Process.getOutputStream() or whatever that method is. To you it's an OutputStream, to the process, it's input. You'll write the stuff to that stream that you'd type to the command line. If you want to get that from the user interactively, you'll do it like you would any interactive user input in any Java program--get it by reading System.in or from some GUI element, and then take that and write it to the process' stream.

    But I have an error because the smaller character is interpretate as a redirection, no as a smaller symbol.
    How I can do to use this command with Runtime.exec ?
    Thanks.

    Sorry,
    I had a typing mistake.
    I want say:

  • Trying to run external script using Runtime.exec

    Hey,
    I am trying to use Runtime.exec(cmd, evnp, dir) to execute a fortran program and get back its output, however it seems to always be hanging. Here is my code snippet :
                Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(
                      "./fortranCodeName > inputFile.txt" , null, new File("/home/myRunDir/"));
                InputStream stream = new InputStream(process.getInputStream());
                InputStream error = new InputStreamr(process.getErrorStream());
                BufferedReader stdoutReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(stream));
                BufferedReader erroutReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(error));
                System.out.println(stream.available());  //returns 0
                System.out.println(error.available());     //returns 0
                while (true) {
                    String line1 = stdoutReader.readLine();  //hangs here
                    String line2 = erroutReader.readLine();
                    if (line1 == null) {
                        break;
                    System.out.println(line1);
                    System.out.println(line2);
                }I know for a fact that this fortran code prints out stuff when run it in terminal, but I don't know if I have even set up my Runtime.exec statement properly. I think I am clearing out my error and input streams with the whole reader.readLine bit I have above, but I am not sure. If you replace the command with something like "echo helloWorld" or "pwd", it prints out everything properly. I also am fairly confident that I have no environmental variables that are used in the fortran code, as I received it from another computer and haven't set up any in my bash profile.
    Any Ideas?

    Okay, so I implemented the changes from that website (thanks by the way for that link, it helps me understand this a little better). However, my problem is still occuring. Here is my new code:
                class StreamThread extends Thread {
                InputStream is;
                String type;
                StreamThread(InputStream is, String type)
                    this.is = is;
                    this.type = type;
                public void run()
                    try
                        InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is); //never gets called
                        BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
                        String line=null;
                        while ( (line = br.readLine()) != null)
                            System.out.println(type  +">"+  line);
                        } catch (IOException ioe)
                            ioe.printStackTrace();
            try {
                Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(
                      "./fortranCodeName" , null, new File("/home/myRunDir/"));
                StreamThread stream = new StreamThread(process.getInputStream(), "OUTPUT");
                StreamThread errorStream = new StreamThread(process.getInputStream(), "ERROR");
                stream.start();
                errorStream.start();
                int exitVal = process.waitFor(); //hangs here
                System.out.println("ExitValue: " + exitVal);

  • Running System commands using Runtime.exec()

    I'm trying to run an example from "The Java Programming Language" book by Arnold, Gosling and Holmes. I'm trying to run a system level command and get the results. The code looks like:
    public static String[] runCommand(String cmd) {
    String[] outputData= null;
    String[] cmdArray = {"/usr/bin/ls", "-l", "/tmp"};
    try {
    Process child = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmdArray);
    InputStream in = child.getInputStream();
    InputStreamReader reader = new InputStreamReader(output);
    BufferedReader = new BufferedReader(reader);
    // read the commands output
    int counter = 0;
    String line;
    while ((line = input.readLine()) != null)
    outputData[counter++]= line;
    if (child.waitFor() != 0){  // error when it's not 0
    System.out.println("Couldn't run the command.");
    System.out.println("It produced the following error message : " + child.exitValue());
    outputData = null;
    } catch (Exception e){
    System.out.println("It got here!");
    System.out.println("It produced the following error message : " + e.getMessage());
    outputData = null;
    return outputData;
    It gets to the while line, trys to run the input.readLine() and kicks out the exception that looks like:
    It got here!
    It produced the following error message : null
    I know it gets to the input.readLine() because I had a whole lot more try blocks in there, but for simplicity left it out (so it look like the code in the book, which I tried originally). When I run the same command from the command line (on our Sun Solaris 2.8 system) I get results back. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Running interactive command with Runtime.exec

    I'm trying to run a command via the Runtime.exec interface.
    Occasionally, the command needs to prompt for additional information. The response depends on the specific configuration, however, the command returns a list of options and then waits for a response.
    However, when the command waits for the response, my Java app hangs.
    After I call Runtime.exec, I create 2 threads to consume the contents of stderr and stdout. I then start them and call proc.waitFor()
    I would expect to see the output of the command in the stdout stream even though the command hasn't exited. I had hoped to parse the output to determine the necessary response. However, the calls to read the contents of the stdout and stderr streams block and I never see any output.
    How can I get access to the contents of those streams while the command is still running? Is this supported through the Runtime.exec interface?
    Thanks,
    Shawn

    There are 2 possible reasons (perhaps concurrent):
    1. The file to be executed is not in the same path of your application, and you MUST specify its whole absolute path as exec() argument;
    2. The file to be execute is really (as you call it) a DOS batch file, and then it HAS TO BE NAMED (and called) myb.BAT or (under NT/2000) myb.CMD; WinDOS is Not Unix (WNU): extensions rule!!!

  • How to handle starting of external processes with Runtime.exec() properly

    hi people,
    you find a lot about starting external processes with the Runtime class in every forum.
    -> that the stdout of the started processes has to be redirected and read
    due to os buffer problems
    -> that calling batches is done by starting the interpreter and the batch as parameter (cmd.exe, /bin/sh,..)
    -> that the created process doesn't have an os environment
    -> ...
    but what if you don't know anything about the started process.
    what if you only want only to start an external process. if you don't want to wait til waitfor() returns and if you don't read the streams of the created processes, the os stdout buffer will overflow immediately an the started process will be blocked.
    you can read the stdout of the started process, but what if the process does print nothing to stdout, and your bufferreader.readLine() will block ?
    you can do this (read buffer, waitFor()) in an separate thread, but the thread lives til the started process will finish, so maybe you got dozens of senseless thread ?
    So, what is an effective and good way to start external programs/processes if you don't know about them.
    so i would be grateful for an answer
    regards
    Alen

    I realize that's a pat answer, but it's true. Spawing off another program without being able to predict its behavior is dangerous.
    But anyway, as I understand it creating a new process is relatively expensive. The cost of creating new threads to read the process's I/O and later garbage collecting those threads when the process dies, probably isn't much of an additional burden.

  • Runtime.exec() fails sometime to execute a command

    Hello,
    I have a program thats using Runtime.exec to execute some external programs sequence with some redirection operators.
    For e.g, I have some command as follows;
    1 - C:\bin\IBRSD.exe IBRSD -s
    2 - C:\bin\mcstat -n @punduk444:5000#mc -l c:\ | grep -i running | grep -v grep |wc -l
    3 - ping punduk444 | grep "100%" | wc -l
    ...etc.
    These command in sequence for a single run. The test program makes multiple such runs. So my problem is sometimes the runtime.exec() fails to execute some of the commands above (typically the 2nd one). The waitFor() returns error code (-1). That is if I loop these commands for say 30 runs then in some 1~4 runs the 2nd command fails to execute and return -1 error code.
    Can some one help me out to as why this is happening? Any help is appreciated

    Hi,
    Infact the command passed to the exec() is in the form of a batch file, which contains on of these commands. I can not put all commands in one batch file due to inherent nature of the program.
    But my main concern was that, why would it behave like this. If I run the same command for 30 times 1~3 times the same command can not be executed (returns with error code 1, on wiun2k pro) and rest times it works perfectly fine.
    Do you see any abnormality in the code.
    I ahve used the same sequence of code as in the article suggested by
    "masijade". i.e having threads to monitor the process and other threads to read and empty out the input and error streams so that the buffer does not get full.
    But I see here the problem is not of process getting hanged, I sense this because my waitFor() returns with error code as 1, had the process hanged it would not have returned , am I making sense?

  • Runtime.exec error in windows

    When i try to run an external program with Runtime.exec() in windows 2000, i get a windows pop-up with the following error msg:
    d:\winnt\system32\ntvdm.exe
    Error while setting up environment for the application.
    I have no idea how to fix this since i have no clue to what that error means.
    Thanks
    Rumy

    I've personally just encountered the same error. I am building a piece of demonstration software to distribute with my graduate school applications to demonstrate my programming experience and I wish to include a set of programs I wrote some years ago in Pascal and C++. The software has been compiled for MS-DOS 6.0. I am using the following command to execute the software from within my Java program:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"command.com","/c","12cards.bat"});The batch file performs the appropriate setup operations for the program and runs the executable. When I run this code segment, I receive the following error:
    [16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem]
    C:\WINNT\system32\ntvdm.exe
    Error while setting up environment for the application. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
    I have another code segment in which I attempt to run the executable myself (without the help of command.com or the batch file). The code segment is as follows:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"12cards.exe"}, new String[0], workingDir);When I run this code segment, the following IOException is thrown:
    java.io.IOException: CreateProcess: 12CARDS.EXE error=2

         at (my code)I have already found the document on Microsoft's support website which describes a solution to this problem. Manually extracting the autoexec.nt, config.nt, and command.com files from the installation CD-ROM did not help.
    The most confusing element of this: 12CARDS.EXE runs fine if I execute it from Windows Explorer. It's only a problem if it's executed from within my Java program. I have two other DOS programs which I want to include as well; I am having the same trouble with them.
    Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks!

    In Java version 1.3 (and later) method exec() of class Runtime returns a Process instance when invoked. The process object returned is what you need to manage.

  • Return from Runtime.exec()

    Hello all,
    I am executing a Windows 2000 command using Runtime.exec() which establishes a connection using "rasdial" to a remote server. However the exec method returns immediately, before the "rasdial" command has had a chance to complete. Does anyone know of a method which executes an OS command but waits for the command to finish before returning? Something like System would be ideal.
    Any help is appreciated,
    Regards,
    Jason
