External disk access privileges

I got some VERY bad advice on access privileges and I am now unable to access my external firewire disk. I added my user id to the root of my boot disk and did an apply to all subfolders. I was trying to protect my data, but the disk now disapeared from my desktop. I run the Disk program and it shows the external disk but it doesnt mount it so I can not access it to change the privileges. I get "you can't open the folder because you don't have sufficient access privileges.
Is there any way to fix this? I have done a repair permissions on my boot disk.
Thaank you
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.11)

It happens a very spooky thing, by trying for the N time to check the disk (with the disk program), it suddenly reapear at the desktop... i was very upset, dont know what have I done lastly, but allas, its now healled. I hope it will keep this way otherwise i'll be back here
Sorry to bother you guys, thank you so much for all the links and the patiente!
(Thanx God I dont have to deal with that DOSlike terminal). At least I learn a good lesson, rookies should never mess with volumes's privileges...
my best kind regards!

  • External Disk Access Suddenly Slow

It now takes forever to load files (Open a finder window) when I open an external drive partition that contains my imovie files and main backup partition on the same external drive.
I never had a problem before.
The permissions for the "Backup" partition in the external drive are:
    - system - Read and write
    - admin - Read and write
    - everyone - Read
The permissions for the "Movie" partition in the external drive are:
    - <my user name> "(me)" - Read and write
    - admin - Read and write
    - everyone - Read
Both drives load - very - slowly (5 minutes).
I am the admin, and the only user.
    OS 10.8.5
    Can anyone offer ideas?
Disk utility found no permissions issues.
    Thanks.

  • Can't set up an iPhoto library on external hard drive: access privileges

    Hi all
I am trying to set up an extra iPhoto library on an external hard-drive to store some of my photos.
I get the following message: 'iPhoto cannot create a new library in this location because you do not have enough access privileges.'
The external hard drive is Formatted: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), is 500g capacity and is empty. Also 'Ignore ownership on this volume' is ticked.
I am the administrator of this computer (imac) which is running Yosemite 10.10.1
Any clues as to what I need to do to make this happen? I'm not much of a techie!
    Cheers
    Finella

Once you've confirmed that the EHD is formatted correctly and all is well (run Disk Utility and repair the disk) try the following to create an almost "duplicate"  library on the EHD:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the EHD as the location where you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Loss of privileges to external disk after using it with Airport Extreme

My wife and I both have MacBook Pros, dual 2 cores running OS 10.5.8. I bought an Airport Extreme to see if we could share songs & pictures wirelessly from the same libraries. I connected an external hard disk to the AEBS and got it set up as a "server". The songs in iTunes worked well, but the photos were a problem because we don't use the same version of iPhoto, also it was slow to process photos wirelessly and the AEBS seemed to randomly kick one or both MBPs off the network, necessitating a restart of all devices. Anyway, I've decided to do away with the AEBS.
Problem is, now when I connect the external hard disk to either computer, I don't have access privileges. How can I fix this without wiping the drive?
    Thanks

Well, I guess I should've explored the Get Info window before posting. I was able to rectify access privileges.
Anyone got a handle on the whole AEBS knocking users off network?

  • I have transferred my itunes library to an external drive. I then attached the external disk to a new computer. I can now access all songs from the new computer. But I can't access playlists. I can still  access all songs and playlists on the old computer

If you right mouse and select Get info it will show you the Apple ID used to purchase these songs.
Usually the name of an apple id is based on the email. So knowing that you may have forgotten the Apple ID password.
You can request a new password here http://www.apple.com/support/appleid/

  • Disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileg

    HI iWEB Guys,
I'm at iWEB 2.0.3 (iWEB08). Been using it for a long whie.
I have 24GB of .mac space with 16GB available - (derived from system/prefs/.mac)
I am trying to publish a series of files for some work collaboration.
Some of these objects are more than 2GB. Should not be a problem.
So, after Ipublish a few of them I get the following error message from iWEB...
*+Can’t create the file “MovieName_DVCPROHD108050.mov.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.+*
I have searched the forums and googled many of the usual places. The fixes for the range from "shortening the .MAc password" (which does not work (+this is certain rubbish!+), especially when you shorten it to the lowest permissible limit length ) to suggestions of maniupulating the ~/library/application support/iweb directories. (useless and out of date for iWEB 2.0.3.
*Other info:* I have also successfully uploaded these files to my iDISK in the hope that I could publish form there. Sadly I get the same error: +Can’t create the file “MovieName_DVCPROHD108050.mov.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.+
I have tried the following to no avail:
    • with NO other UPLOAD or download network traffic.
    • recreating the iWEB site and the offending page
    • tried with other files
I have run out of ideas.
Do you guys have an ideas on this?
    ta

Hi QuicktimeKirk.. thanks for this piece of info. This 2Gb limit is severely painful for iDISK seeing I have so much iDISK storage.
Thanks for this and may explain some of the error, but one of the failing files is only 1.8GB.. so I guess this is not the problem.
    2) as for playing your statement is not quite correct. And further my reason for wanting them to be uploaded is not for playing, just for sharing with colleagues in a remote work collabroation instead of FTP.
    Thanks for your thoughts anyway.

  • Iweb - when I ask to publish my site ( using ftp) I am suddenly receiving this errorCan't create the file "logo.jpg." The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges. Any ideas please

Can’t create the file “logo.jpg.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?  What system and iWeb versions do you have?
    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and later the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks or Yosemite  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
This is the image contained in the file causing the problem...
I certain the original is contained in the Combo updates and on the OS disks.
As a temporary fix, click on the image above to open it.
Use Screen capture (Shift+Command+4) and click on the opposite corners of the image.
It will be saved as a Screen shot 2011-mm-dd at hh:mm.png
Right click on the filename in Finder and rename it to mwmac_white.png
I'm not certain, but the file might need to be moved into the Documents directory in the Subdirectory named for the website name you are editing. That's where it is on my system, but I moved a bunch of files when I restored from Time Machine about 18 months ago.
I also have many copies of mwmac.png, a separate copy one for each web page where the image appears in my website.

  • Receiving this message"Can't create the file "highlighter_welcome_header.jpg." The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges." I have enough storage how do I find the problem?

Can’t create the file “highlighter_welcome_header.jpg.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.
How do I find the problem? Disk is not full.

    Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
