External disk display on the sidebar

I have several external disks. All appeared in the finder and also in the desktop. Until yesterday, one of the disk just disappear. I can still see it and open it up if I am in the Disk Utility screen.  However, when I open it up from the Disk Utility screen, that disk is greyed out.  I can still access all the files.
How can I get it to appear back on the desktop and finder window, without the trouble of having to open up the Disk Utility?
Thank you for your help.

Sometimes external drives do disappear from the sidebar in Finder. Here's the technique I use:
In your Finder window toolbar (at top), look for an icon that has 4 horizontal lines, each line indented further than the line above it. It is called the Path button.  If it's there, skip to #3.  (You can see a picture of it, and a writeup on inserting it here:  http://lifehacker.com/245127/mac-tip--add-the-path-button-to-finders-toolbar )
If that button is not there, right-click on the toolbar & select "Customize Toolbar…", find that icon, and drag it up into your button bar at the top of the Finder window. Click Done to close the Customize Toolbar panel.
Now click & hold on that button. If there is only one choice "All My Files" then you are in All-My-Files mode, a feature of Mountain Lion. If there is a list of folders & drive, skip to #5.
Get out of All-My-Files mode by clicking anything else in the left sidebar (Documents, Desktop, anything except All My Files).
Click & hold on the Path button & you'll see a path, folder by folder, up to your boot drive. The next-to-last choice will be your boot drive (usually MacintoshHD, unless you renamed it), and the last choice will be the name of your computer.
Select your computer name (last choice in menu).
Now, the Finder window will show a list of the drives connected to your computer, and your missing drive should appear there.
You can choose your drive & navigate into it, but you should also drag that drive into the left sidebar so it adds as a Favorite. It should stay there, but if it ever goes missing again, you can use the PathBack button to get back to it.

I am experiencing the same issue with a new external DVD burner, a Sony DRX-840U. When I load a CD into this external drive it appears in iTunes but when you go to import or play the CD iTunes indicates playing or importing for each individual track for just a moment. The end result is that nothing is ever imported or played. I am experiencing this on two different systems. One a notebook running Win2K and the other a desktop running XPpro. If I use the internal DVD drives on either of these systems everything work just fine. Yet I am able to use this new external DVD drive with every other application. For example Window Media Player has no problem playing or importing the same CD that iTunes fails on. The last person indicated that if one set the DVD drive in question to be the drive of choice under preferences>advanced>burning that all was ok. I my case this Sony external drive is the drive listed as the drive of choice for burning yet the issue still exists.
As this appears to be an issue that others are also experiencing help from Apple Tech Support would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I use two different PC's with Lr5.5 to manage and process my photos stored on external disk, and exchange the analysis between these two computers?

I operate on two computers and would like to be able download  Lr jobs done on my laptop,  to my stationary PC, also used to process other images, all stored on the same external disk.
In other words I want to process may photos on two PCs and to to have access to all analyses from one or even better from both computers independently.
    Samek.

You need to put your photos AND LR catalog file (.lrcat) on the external drive, and make sure the external drive has the same device name or drive letter on both computers.
I have been using LR this way for several years and it works fine as long as you MAKE A BACKUP of the external disk somewhere, in case you lose or drop/damage the external drive which is easy to do.  Nightly, or sometimes more than once a day, I copy all changes from my working external disk to another similar-sized external disk.  I have lost a disk, once, and dropped/destroyed a disk, once, but recovery is as easy as using what used to be the backup disk as the primary one, and buying a new disk for the backup device.  It does take some hours to copy the 1TB of photos to the new backup disk, but once that is done, it usually only takes a few 10s of minutes or less to copy what is new or changed each night.

I do not have the time to read through your whole script and give specific answers, but the general principle is fairly easy.  You're moving with the Finder, so your move command is going to be of the form:
    tell application "Finder"
move file xxxx to folder yyyy
    end tell
For cross file system moves (which are as you point out actually duplications) just add a line after each move that sends the old file to the trash:
    tell application "Finder"
move file xxxx to folder yyyy
      delete file xxxx
    end tell
the Finder has an empty trash command that you can use at the end of the script if you like.
One gotcha: because move has two different behaviors, the second code block will throw an error if you try to use if for a local move (it will move the file properly, then try to delete the file it moved, which is obviously no longer there).  For clarity, I'd use duplicate rather than move for if you're working across file systems.  That's what you're actually doing, and if you use the move command you may confuse yourself when you come back to look at the script a year down the road.

  • External 20" Display on the MacBook

    Hi!
I'm thinking about buying an external display for my MB, sadly a Cinema Display is not within budget.
I was looking at a Samsung 205BW with a reslution of 1680x1050, but somewhere I read it doesn't work on the MacBook connected through DVI. Is anyone using a non-Apple 20" display at that resolution, maybe even the Samsung? Does it work? Which displays work?
    Thanks,
    Lutz

    hi.
    I have a viewsonic 2235wm (22" 1680x1050 widescreen, native res)
my macbook is hooked up to it through a KVM switch via VGA.
it works fine on my PC (is detected and does proper res), but my macbook detects it as "display" and only does 1600x1200 (no other res offered)
any idea? if I hook it up straight to the monitor it does the same thing, so I know its not the switch... I'm thinking DVI is required to go above 1600?
    ---- EDIT ----
just read the manual (haha) and it says the max res of VGA adapter on macbook is 1600x1200!!!!! noooo!
now I have THIS problem: the mini-DVI to DVI adapter would work (with an adapter to change the VGA cable @ the KVM switch) BUT Apple is sneaky and moved one of the pins so that a standard VGA/DVI adapter won't work on their mini-DVI to DVI adapter... grrrrrreat.
so basically, thanks to apple being proprietary, I'll have to
    a) find an adapter to turn my mini-dvi-to-dvi-adapter into vga for the vga-based KVM switcch
    or
    b) buy a new KVM switch with DVI and use DVI cables for everything (ugh)
oh well, I was getting tired of this belkin flip POS anyway!

  • Cannot copy some files from my mac to any external disk whatever format the disk might be in

i sometimes face trouble copying some large movies for example to an external drive, i use a section of this drive for time machine and the other for back up... but at times some movies cannot be copied an error occurs and the operation stops... please somebody help me, ive checked everything the files arent locked or passwprd protected... i can cut and paste them around different part of the internal drive but when i try moving it to an externl drive thats when the error occurs...

The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0).
This is the message I get everytime I try copying some of the files and it always happens to these files only the rest I can copy without issue... So what do you think the problem is??? Thanks in advance

  • I've update my music using an external disk; now I uploaded agin the music  but it doesn't appear in Itunes. How can I synchronize the music folder with Itunes?

I've managed my music downloading and uploading it from an external disk; I put the music into the Finder MUSIC folder and copyed it into Itubìnes but it does't appear. What Do I have to do? How can I synchronize the Musice Folder with Itunes?

    Chris, thanks for the reply.
That's what I'm confused about. I did exactly what you said. I copied the entire music folder from the old computer and put it in the music folder on the new computer. I've tried that two or three times now. And, I've checked, and all of the files are there (that's what I meant by 'clicking on Itunes Media'--when I click on the iTunes media folder in music/itunes in Finder, all of the files are there). But, when I open iTunes, nothing shows up--no movies, no music, no tv shows. It seems like it should be so simple, but it won't work for me.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much.

  • Can't see external disks on Finder

I can't see my external Storage (whether it be TimeMachine hard drive, USB sticks) in Finder (side bar). I see them in Disk Utility. I see them if I open "/Volumes/" but that's not really convenient. External Disks are enabled in sidebar.
Please see attached pictures for details
My system is also very slow. Would you recommend a clean install ?
    And Yes

Move the mouse to the right of "Appareil" in the Finder sidebar. The option "show" should appear. Click on it.. et voilà! The disks are back!!!
Also a clean install did help me improving some perfomances. You may want to try Onyx first, and clean all caches. Don't forget to do a "repair permission" with Disk Utility or Onyx (it should be the same) before nything else.

  • Start-up disk is not the first one to load or appear on the desktop

I just switched to 10.5 and have the following challenge.
My MBP HD is partitioned in to 3 sections.
    Partition 1 = OS10.4 with programmes.
    Partition 2 = OS10.4 with other programmes.
    Partition 3 = files.
Under 10.4 the MBP would load the start-up partition first (partition 1 or 2) and the other partitions next. This would result in the disks appearing in order of loading. For example if I start up from Partition 1 the order would be from the top:
    Partition 1
    Partition 2
    Partition 3
Followed by any files that might be on the desktop.
In other words the computer would load the start-up volume first and display this at the top of all disk displayed on the desktop.
I have now switched to 10.5 and this no longer happens. It seems now that the MBP displays the partition wherever it was last put. Is there a way of changing this? Or has something changed in the OS?
I would like it to load/show the partition with the active OS as top one so I can see from what OS we are presently working by seeing the active partition up top.
Any suggestions? or any other way one cold automatically see what partition is presently active?

    Hi again "oldtimer" (chuckle).
I take that as a compliment Barry!
How about putting your partitioned stuff on an external firewire drive?
I travel a lot so that is not really an option for my MBP
I have both time machine and a bootable clone in separate partitions on an external drive.
I have a FW backup (well 2 the old-timers have learned ). Interesting about your Time machine. do you back up to it over the FW cable? I thought this only works over a Wireless connection?

  • How to connect an external disk to time capsule?

    Hi,
I've just connected my new external disk 2TB to the time capsule device. However, it doesn't show in the disk tab in Airport express. Yes, of course the disk is on, it's hfs+journaled formatted and works fine when connected directly to my usb port on my MacBook Pro.
    Any suggestion, please?
    Thanks.

Unless this is a really new feature, Airport Express doesn't support external USB disks; only USB printers.
The Wireless-N Time Capsules and Airport Extremes support external USB disks.

  • How do I create an iPhoto Library on an external disk

I have a project that has grown out of all proportion, and for space reasons I wish to move the iPhoto library from the system disk to an external disk and access the pictures from there.
    Is this possible?
I have tried duplication the original library file moving it to the external disk. I then moved the original photos to trash but this caused BOTH iphoto library files to go blank.
Fortunately I was able to get back to square one.
    Regards Peter

    Peter:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Mac no longer recognizes external disk

I have an external disk that I reformatted in FAT32 as I share it with an old PC while I am doing file transfer from PC to Mac. This worked fine for a week and then today all of a sudden the Mac told me I should nt remove the external disk ( I had nt touched it. it was still connected via the USB port) and since then it no longer "sees" the external disk. However the PC continues recognizing it. I have swithched everything off, plugged and unplugged, but no success. HELP!

    I did that.
But nothing happens. I guess cmd e doesn t do anything if the Mac doesn t realize that I have an external disk connected!
I have eliminated all hardware pbs in my reasoning. Am I right?
    - disk is ok as it is visible to PC
    - cable and connector are OK as external disk works with PC
    - FAT32 format is ok as it was readable by Mac for a whole week. (and it stopped suddenly while I was n t even accessing disk and the disk disappeared from Finder AS IF I had pulled out the USB port without disconnecting. Mac even ACCUSED me of doing so on screen)
    - Mac USB port is ok as I use it with camera
Any other suggestions? Should I take the apple to a store? It is only one month old so under guarantee
