  • Pegasus2 disk mount fails to mount in time during restart

I have a new Mac Pro + Pegasus2 external drive.   If I restart the system, the boot happens and files under the mount point are accessed before the Pegasus2 drive is ready to be mounted, which appears to block the mount point.    I called the mount point /Volumes/Peg and the disk eventually gets mounted as "Peg 1" and of course all the files can't be found.
If I shut down, I can push the power button on the Pegasus2, wait a few seconds and then push the power button on the Mac Pro and all is well.  The disk gets mounted correctly.    So this is simply a race condition.
Does anyone know how to make the system wait util the drive is mounted before accessing files under /Volumes/Peg?
    Thanks!

  • How do I clone an external disk using CCC?

I have a MacBook Air and because it has only 256 GB and I need about three times that space for storing movies, document files etc., I use an external hard disk to keep these files on.
I formatted this disk using Mac Extended Journal but I did not put the Snow Leopard Operating System on it. I just move files from the computer's hard drive to the disk as required.
I had a scare once where the data on another external hard disk was wiped out because of a faulty USB cord. All the movies were lost and I could not recover the data. The disk also failed to mount. This problem kept happening several times. When I got rid of the faulty USB cord, the external disk mounted and I never lost data again. I am certain all the problems were due to the faulty USB cord. I have been using the same external disk ever since and it has been working fine with the non-faulty USB cord so I am sure it didn't have anything to do with the disk and it was the USB cord that was the problem. I used the same faulty USB cord with other external disks and the same problems arose - failure to mount etc.
This is the background for why I want to make a copy of this external drive. I don't want to lose the movies and other data on this disk if something goes wrong again and want everything on another disk just in case.
I usually use Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups. But that is with a external disk that has OS 10.6.8 on it.
I really don't want to put OS 10.6.8 on the external drive where I store movies and other over-spill data on it.
How do I go about making a copy of this external disk using CCC (or using another program if CCC won't work for this)?
I have two USB ports on my MBA. I prefer to use CCC over SuperDuper because I had a problem with SuperDuper in the past.

So as I understand it, CCC will clone any disk to any disk so long as it's formatted to Mac (extended Journal) and I don't have to put the Mac operating system on the disks that I am copying from and copying to?
    Thanks for answering.

  • Disk Mounting error

Trying to download a program and get the "disk mounting failed" message.
Using an EMac with OS 10.3.9, downloading a .dmg file about 5.6MB using Safari 1.3.1(v312.3.3). I've gotten all the updates and Java fixes I can think of. I am able to download other files w/o problem. The file I'm trying to download is Limewire. I've been on their discussion board but no results.
    Any sugesstions?
Oh, the Safari downloads about 180kb of the file and then gives me the error and I'm using a cable modem connection.
    EMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I just had the very same problem (with a CD instead of DVD, but same error) and found your unanswered post. I checked out another site, and it suggested that the I/O problem has something to do with data corruption....
And then I remembered that when watching DVD's - if they are dirty, they won't play...
And I ejected the CD, and found some gummy jam like substance on the data side.
Cleaned it off, and now it works fine....hope this helps you or others!

  • Fire wire external disk fails to mount

    Hello,
I've been trying to work out how to access my LaCie external disk on my macosx 10.4.6.
At first it worked well on both servers. After a while, the mounted icon simply disappeared. Try as I may, neither server mounts my external LaCie or any USB device for that matter.
I reinstalled OSX on one of them and when i connect it now it is correctly mounted, including usb device.
But on the other identical server on which i did not reinstall OSX it still doesn't mount.
Nevertheless, in the system information panel, fire wire, there is a line stating "la cie external drive" blah blah, but without specifiyng size and the disk is not accessible, no icon on the desktop and so on.
I tried shutting off for 20 min, with every cable unpluged, I tried updating but still it does not mount.
if any of you had this problem and would like to share with me the solution it would be really great !
    thanks in advance

These are the most common reasons for one computer to work with an external drive while another does not (assuming the cable is the same), all of which are covered in my FAQ mentioned earlier, which perhaps I should outline like this:
    1. The PRAM needs zapping. Note, if a machine is 3 or more years old, PRAM zapping should only be attempted after verifying that the clock battery is fully charged at 3.6 V.
    2. The firewire ports need resetting.
    3. Dust in the firewire ports.
    4. Installed firmware on the Firewire bridge of the hard drive is not fully compatible with the operating system. Check the manufacturer's support line (in this case e-mail firewire AT lacie.com) for updated firmware.
    5. The operating system's Firewire drivers are not properly installed. This may happen if you used system specific disks for another Mac to install the operating system, or the directory is damaged, or the preferences for the firewire are not working.
I would test in that order.

  • Deleted disk image generates warning that disk image failed to mount

When I got a new MacBook a month ago, I created a disk image to share an iPhoto library on the same computer. Now I am using an external hard drive to share the library. I deleted the disk image in Disk Utility, but when I start up I get the warning that the disk image failed to mount.
    Any ideas?

Deleting the disk image from the trash seems to have fixed the problem.

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • External Drive Disk Erase Failed with the Error Input/Output Error

I have 2 hard drives in an external FW800 enclosure that I am unable to format. When I go to initialize the drives in Disk Utility, I get the following error message: "Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error."
The drives show up in Disk Utility, but I can't repair them (that option is grayed out). Disk Utility correctly ID's the manufacturer of the drives (Maxtor), their size (200gb each), so it's obviously seeing that the drives are there. But it won't let me format them.
The drives are new, by the way; they don't have any data/files on them. I have Disk Warrior, but the drives don't show up there to be repaired -- probably because they aren't formatted yet.
After looking at other posts, I tried switching the jumper settings around on the drives -- from Master/Slave to cable select and back again, but it didn't help. I also tried doing a zero erase (even though the drives are new), zapping the PRAM -- again, no help.
One question I had is whether this could be a bad FW800 cable? The cable is new -- it came with the enclosure, which is an OWC Dual FW 800 enclosure. Other than that, does anyone have any other thoughts about what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    SOLUTION!!!!
I had the exact same problem. I have the original 20 GB hard drive that came in my Powerbook G4 550MHz and a couple of years ago I traded up for a 60 GB drive and bought a FW/USB enclosure for my original drive to use it to backup my important files. I hadn't backed up in over a year (shame on me!) and I decided maybe I should erase the drive and start from scratch. It was connected via USB.
At that point DiskUtility gave me the exact same Input/Output error. I tried partitioning the drive into 1 or more partitions but came up with the same error. I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I decided to startup in OS 9.2.2, I did that and let it start up, then plugged in the hard drive and it gave me the standard "This disk is unrecognizable, do you want to eject or erase?" so I clicked Initalize. It worked!
Just make sure you choose the MacOS Extended option when initializing out of OS 9 (instead of the MacOS Standard option) so it can be read and viewed in OS X.
If your computer is too new to be able to boot from an OS 9 folder on your drive or an OS 9 CD, then see if a friend or a local library has older computers that are running OS 9 or can boot from it. If not let me know and you can send me your drive and I'll reformat it.
Kind of crazy...I haven't used the OS 9 partition on my HD in YEARS...was even thinking about erasing it since I don't use any Classic applications anymore...good thing I didn't!

  • 10.4.6 update limbo, disk image mounts fail

Not sure what happened with the 10.4.6 update. Software Update was in process. Then I blinked and returned to a shut down machine. In "about the computer" the ac OS X version is listed as 10.4.6. But in System Preferences / Software Update, the 10.4.6 Mac OS update is not listed.
Another indication that all is not well, mounts for disk images fail. This means I cannot get at the standalone updater -- or an updated version of Cocktail.
Initial checks on the HD seem okay. All permissions repaired. What next to get out of this limbo?
(Other comments on using standalone updates instead of automatic Software Updates noted and appreciated -- but frustrating in this situatioin with failures on disk image mounts.

  • Unwanted Duplicate Mounts of FireWire External Disk

    Hi all,
I've been having this problem since Tiger, yet it continues through Leopard. Every time I plug in my i-Rocks 9300 series FW800 enclosure for my external 320GB drive, OS X mounts the disk twice if via FW800, which causes all partitions on the disk to become corrupt, forcing me to erase the disk cleanly. This doesn't occur if mounted via USB.
I have a sinking feeling that this is a problem with the firmware in the enclosure. I've tried most everything I can find about disk mounting in OS X. Modifying the fstab is no help, and it seems that there aren't any ways of controlling such behavior properly.
    Any help is appreciated.

It does not have FW400, except via a 9-to-6 adapter and cable, and I don't have a 6-pin cable to test it.
I haven't been able to test it out on other Macs, yet.
Yes, I can eject one or the other, but more often than not, another system process has already written things to only one partition, thus causing corruption.
Have tried re-formatting to something other than FAT or HFSJ.
I think I may end up buying another enclosure, since the manufacturer's support team is useless.
    Thanks!

  • ITunes Fails to Play Music from Library on External Disk

I just updated to iTunes 11.2.2 on my macMini following an update to OS X 10.9.3. I have my music library stored on an external 1TB firewire disk and some on a second gen iPod. The iPod music is accessable and will play but the music on the external disk, while showing up correctly in iTunes, will not play. I can't even play the music from within finder (no play icon on the music file icon in finder.) I can use the right click menu option to show a music item in iTunes in Finder and it knows right where it is so it seems itunes is fully aware of the libraries location on the external drive.
One additional point is that I also install Xcode 6 Beta which would not install with iTunes opened. I was wondering if the beta of Xcode 6 is at issue? If is what will be needed to backout that instalation? What changes does Xcode 6 do that affects iTunes in the first place? Maybe it isn't Xcode 6 but something else just not sure.

    A few possibilities here:
    1) It's possible the update caused iTunes to loose the link to your Library:
check the advanced tab look at the first item named "iTunes Media Folder location"
even if this appears to be correct, wouldn't hurt to click the "Change" button and point to your library
RESTART itunes immediately and see if this helps.
    2) Is there a chance that your external drive wasn't mounted before launching iTunes? I know that this is problem on Windoze, maybe Mac too?
    3) see an old link named "
Re: Using an external disk for iTunes

    4) There's always the possibility that Apple (in it's infinite wisdom) has removed the option supporting external disks: however, if this were the case I'd expect to see numerous posts on the topic.
    ONE WARNING:
Don't sync your iPod to your iTunes library till you resolve this.

  • Yosemite cannot mount external disks

Since I upgraded to Yosemite my IMAC does not mount external disks, even the bright new one I bought
I have also a Macbook Air that I upgraded to Yosemite and these same external disks can be mounted on the Macbook Air.
I have searched on the Apple support community and on the internet and quite some people whom upgraded to Yosemite have the same problem.
I checked the USB specs on both the IMAC and the MACbook Air

    Thks for helping me out.

I have read that if you turn Spotlight off you will have no problems. Open Spotlight, choose "privacy", click the "+" at the lower left and add what you do not Spotlight to search. Worked for me. I have 2 internal Seagates formatted OS X journaled in an external case.
