External disk not shown in finder or diskutil

When I connect an external harddrive to my Macbookpro it does not show on Finder, Diskutil (but the hdd disk starts). USB works fine. If I plug in FW when computer is shut down or sleep it works fine. Cant find out why. Tried with different cables and disks.

You could run a Apple Hardware Test but I think the solution will be determined at a genius bar session.  I would suggest you make an appointment.

  • External SSD not shown in Finder

    My external SSD does not appear in Finder and not in Disk Utility.
    The SSD is connected to my Macbook Pro via an USB cable form a SATA hard disc casing.
    I used the SSD in another MBP till it broke down (logic board failure). When I bought a new MBP I took the SSD out of the old one and put it in a casing with USB connection. I could rescue all data to my new MBP. Then I erased the SSD with tthe intention to use it only for photos.  It has worked fine for some time.
    I have used it on two macs and I also had it conntected via my Time Capsule. The TC connection was slow plus that I got problems with Time machine, so I skipped that. After that my problems began. None of my computer recognise the SSD now.
    Now I only can trace the SSD on System Information; under USB I see ”USB to S-ATA”. That is all.
    The power indicator on SSD casing is lighting.

    You probably have a bad controller in the enclosure. Purchase another and see if the SSD will work (they're very inexpensive and some are simply better than others - I use OWC enclosures for all of my clone drives).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • External HD not shown in Finder

    I have several EHD's connected to my late 27" 2011 iMac running 10.9.2, one EHD has my SuperDuper backup on it however it does not show up in the Finder Sidebar. Whereas all other EHDs connected (Time Machine drive and 2 other EHDs) do show up. I looked in Disk Utility and the SuperDuper EHD does show up and is operational, I have also restarted in Recovery Mode to see if the drive shows up and is bootable and it is. The only issue is the drive does not show up in Finder's sidebar. In 10.9.1 I had no problems, this just started when I installed 10.9.2. I have run Disk Utility and Repaired Disk Permissions however that's about it. Maybe a PRAM or SMC reset would work.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    I did toggle the sidebar buttons and that didn't help, but the plist idea is a good one. I have a troubleshooting account set up on machine and will see if the issue is just in my local account, if it is that points the finger at my normal user account and probably my user account Finder Plist. I can all use Terminal to restart Finder and see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Inserted CD is not shown in Finder, neither possible to load nor to get it out... Any idea?

    Inserted CD is not shown in Finder, neither possible to load nor to get it out again...
    Restart with pressed left Mouse button or Reset didn't help...
    Any idea? Thx

    Have you tried using Disk Utility? Utilities Folder>Disk Utility, hopefully the CD will be listed on the left. Select it and then click on the 'eject' butoon.
    Edit: If that didn't work, here's a few more suggestions: http://guides.macrumors.com/Force_Eject_a_Stuck_CD_or_DVD

  • USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

    I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
    The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
    The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
    Any suggestions.

    Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

  • Album art not shown in finder

    Embedded album art in audio files is not shown in finder since I upgraded to ML (worked fine in SL).
    Other peaple report a solution of the problem with elimination of Voice Memos. But in my case this is not evident because I do not have Voice Memos.
    Does somebody know the solution of the problem?

    After hours struggling with this issue I finally found a solution (my setup is iTunes 10.7, OSX 10.8.3):
    (But my workaround is only for people who know how to handle iTunes libraries!!! And backup first!!)
    Open a new user account on your mac.
    Generate a new iTunes library called 'itunes', no other name!
    Import some files with embedded album art.
    Drag such a file back to desktop and you should see the icon of album art.
    Everything is like it should be.
    Now copy this new itunes library to your user account of origin.
    But first rename your old iTunes library different from 'itunes' e.g. 'itunesorigin'
    Open the new iTunes and drag one file to desktop, now miraculosly all audiofiles in all of your itunes libraries should show up album art IN FINDER including preview and quicklook.
    But this state is not stable. As soon as you open the old 'itunesorigin' the problem starts up again.
    So, the next steps are:
    Open the new iTunes and in preferences select the media folder of 'itunesorigin'. OK, say no to 'collate data'. Close iTunes.
    Now copy and replace from 'itunesorigin' to the new iTunes the following files:
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Library.xml
    Open the new iTunes and it should look like the old 'iTunesorigin' with all your playlists etc..
    Close again.
    Move the media folder from 'iTunesorigin to the new iTunes folder (replace).
    Open new iTunes and select in preferences the new location of the media folder.
    Now you should have the file iTunes Music Library.xml instead of iTunes Library.xml.
    (iTunes Music Library.xml is the default if you have multiple libraries)
    Done! For me its stable and I am happy. Your iTunes folder should look like this picture:

  • External USB Drive Not Shown in Finder... HELP!!!

    After upgraded to the latest OS X Lion, external USB drives plugged to my macbook pro (named A) won't show anything. I've tried cmd+opt+r+p twice but no luck; however, i am able to see it in Disk Ultilities and Storage in About This Mac...
    Another same macbook pro of mine (named B) did the upgrade and it is working just fine - external drive is shown as normal whenever plugged.
    Help please because my daily work depends largely on document on external usb drive!!!???

    I've surfed around already before having my problem posted here because it's so frustrated…
    AnaMusic: I've tried that but it isn't worked
    Eric Ross: it's checked
    LexSchellings: I did run "verify disk" and "repair disk" -> but no luck… My hard drive isn't mounted to Lion as shown in status. Is it something to do with NTFS format? I came across some forum and read that Lion is design to natively support NTFS..
    Are there any ways around???

  • External HDs NOT showing in finder on Mac Mini Server

    On my brand new mac mini server. for the life of me, I can't work out why my 3 external firewire plus the thunderbolt drive we use as the actual drive we all connect to one the network, just will not show either on the desktop OR in the left column of the finder?
    I have gone into finder preferences and selected External disks and no joy. am I missing something?  In fact, I'm fairly sure that at least the thunderbolt HD was showing when I first got it a week ago with teh mac mini.?
    Superduper and disk utility CAN see them and this is the ONLY way I can do a safe eject currently as I have no other way to eject.
    What might be happening do you think?

    Hi Antonio, did you ever try this?

  • USB storage devices not shown in Finder, yet function, and show in System Information?

    Occurring starting about last month, this has gone from a seldom, to all the time situation. plugging in any USB memory device either directly to the computer, or with cables, will allow the files to be accessed/changed/deleted by programs, but the device with it's files will not show in finder. The device shows in System information. I have set Finder to show everything, but they no longer apear. Before failing entirely, I would sometimes have the device show for a short time, then get an "Improper removal" error, without touching the device, after a few moments. All these memory devices still function properly when used in external devices and when direcly accesed by software. Not being able to use finder to modify content is a significant problem.

    Well I'm about out of ideas. Going off what you described, these devices work fine elsewhere and gradually failed on your computer.
    Unless someone else can post other ideas, I only can suggest a reinstall of Lion from scratch. I would make sure I had a good backup from TM and an additional backup of your important files just in case.
    Probably the easiest way would be to make a bootable USB stick or drive to work from. Procedure here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/08/make-a-bootable-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-installer-from -a-usb-flash-drive/
    If you can accomplish that, see if you can boot from it. If so, use Disk Utility to erase the main drive and reformat it. Verify the drive is OK. Then quit Disk Utility abd procede to install Lion.
    When the installation is finished, reboot and use Setup Assistant imediately to migrate your user data and applications back from the TM drive. Don't use migration assistant later.
    I doubt it will help since the Comb-Update didn't fix it, but who knows.

  • SD card not shown in Finder, but shown in iPhoto

    Hej all,
    I have a problem with my SD card. It was shown by Finder on my iMac and it was shown in iPhoto too. Since a while no SD card is shown in Finder, but each SD card is still recognised in the Finder. I have a guess: I think, that I unconciously moved the SD card from the Finder to the s Desktop. Since then it's not in the Finder anymore, but also not on the Desktop.How can I get the card back also into the finder?
    Hope someone can help me.
    Markus

    See if pressing the Eject key ejects the disk. If it works, restart your Mac then re insert the disk.

  • External Disk Size Mismatch in Finder

    Hi,
    I have a 1TB external disk attached via firewire 800 on my MBP. When I do a cmd-I on this, Finder and Disk Utility displays 700GB+ used. But when I select all the folders/files in the root of that disk and do a cmd-I, it barely reaches 500GB... where/what is that extra 200GB?
    Side Note: Last thing I did before I got this 200GB extra was I tried to 'Erase Free Space' via the Disk Utility (zero-out data option) overnight. 'Tried' meaning i think it did not complete 'coz when I woke up, there was an error that i didn't bother to take note of and the disk was ejected (not just unmounted). I thought that the cable just got loose so I didn't really gave it a thought... now I think this must be the reason...
    thanks,
    zurc

    zurc,
    What you found is an artifact of the "Erase Free Space" routine. You can safely empty the trash to get rid of it, and you should see your free space return.
    If you were really serious about zeroing out data on this drive, you might want to try it again. Make sure the Mac to which it is connected is set to not sleep, and to not allow drives to spin down when possible. Keep in mind that a 1 TB drive is going to take a very long time to "zero."

  • Hard disk not being detected / Finding compatible replacement

    Hi,
    I have a late 2007 macbook (white). I was using it when it froze while listening to itunes. I've pressed the power button to turn it off and turn it back on.
    Unfortunately it did not boot. I've inserted the leopard upgrade disc and booted with the C pressed.
    It entered the installation and I selected the disk utility. Unfortunately it only shows the DVD drive and not the HD. I have a time machine disk and inserted and it recognized the external disk but not the internal one.
    I am assuming the worse scenario that the primary HD is gone. Since I am nowhere near an apple store/repair center I'd like to know what kind of extra steps can I do in order to confirm my assumption and if that's the case which HDs are compatible?
    I found some steps to replace the disk (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Hard-Drive-Replacement/514 /1).
    Regards.

    Start by:
    How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
    Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
    HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
    Shut the computer off for 5 minutes to an hour. Restart with the Installer Disc and see if DU now recognizes the hard drive. If so check the SMART status. If it says "Failed" then the drive should be replaced. Otherwise if the drive is still not usable then you should do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • File sizes not shown in Finder

    Only a few sizes are shown for applications and folders in the Finder window. If I select a folder and then press Command-I, the size will be shown in the information window, but still not showing in Finder. Any thoughts?
    Macbook 100g   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello Chris
    This is a View Option. Whilst you have a folder open, do View>Show View Options. In there you will find that you can have the folder sizes displayed and calculated automatically. You can also change this setting for all windows if you want it.

  • External-graphic not shown in PDF with Tomcat / Cocoon / Ubuntu

    Hi,
    this weekend I set up a virtualbox with Ubuntu 8.04 OS; APEX 3.12 @ Oracle 10gXE; Tomcat 6.014; Cocoon 2.1.11; fop_post sitemap file according to Carl Backstrom blogpost ([http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html]); to experiment with APEX & PDF printing.
    Tomcat is configured to listen to port 8888; APEX to 8080.
    I have setup APEX according to Carl's blogpost. All is working fine; I can generate PDF reports using the standard templates. I'm new to XSL, but decided to go wild. I decided to include a JPG graphic.
    I followed the example in Scott & Spendolini, Pro Oracle Application Express, page 399. However the image is not shown in the PDF, nor is there an error message produced. What is wrong?
    This is the relevant section of source code I have used:
    <fo:static-content flow-name="region-footer">
    <fo:block xsl:use-attribute-sets="text footer">
    <fo:inline xsl:use-attribute-sets="body-font page-number">

    all help is appreciated. Is there a problem with Cocoon and Linux?

    Hello Ronald,
    Your code looks fine to me. Although xsl-fo is not very friendly for a slight change...
    This is an example I use during my PDF printing presentation:
    <fo:static-content flow-name="region-header">
    <fo:block xsl:use-attribute-sets="text text_2 text_0 #PAGE_HEADER_ALIGNMENT#">
    <fo:inline xsl:use-attribute-sets="page-header">#PAGE_HEADER#</fo:inline>
    </fo:block>
    <fo:block border="0.5pt solid silver"
    background-image="url('http://o11g1.apex-evangelists.com:7779/i/htmldb/apex_logo.gif')"
    padding="12pt"
    text-align="center">Apex Evangelists
    </fo:block>
    </fo:static-content>
    Does that work for you?
    (change o11g1.apex-evangelists.com:7779 to your hostname:port - and see that you get the image by using the url)
    I've sometimes seen problems displaying certain pictures or specifying the width.
