External disk won't mount after 10.5.7 upgrade

Hi,
I know there's problem with Buffalo external HD; mine is Lexcron 3.5'' external case and it won't mount neither. I tried PRAM restart, and if I go to Disk Utility and try to repair, it gives me the following message:
Verify and Repair volume “Dirty Hary”
** /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix has been disabled because of volume corruption issues.
** If you still want to try fixing your volume, use /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix from the command line...
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
It worked with 10.5.6 and it still works with Win XP (it's NTFS format).
Is there something that I can do?
Will this issue be solved in Snow Leopard?
Thanks in advance for any kind of constructive info (I've already read threads with Buffalo issue, but I didn't find any thread giving a solution).

Hi V.K.,
Thanks for your response, can you provide some more details?
OS X has very limited support for NTFS. you need to repair the drive from windows.
How do I do that? I mean the disk works normally in Win XP and it worked normally in the previous OS X version. Btw. I've also installed NTFS-3D which allowed to write on the disk and search from spotlight (of course when it was mounted).
run chkdsk in windows and see if it finds any errors.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
it can also be that the problem is caused by ntfs-3g which is known to have a number of bugs. you can try uninstalling it or plugging in the drive in a mac without ntfs-3g installed.
there is no "issue" to solve.
Well if it worked in 10.5.6 and it works in Win XP and it doesn't work in 10.5.7 I am tempted to say 10.5.7 has an issue.
the fact that you have a problem with one drive on your particular system doesn't mean there is a problem with os x in general. an issue is when all or at least many people have a problem, not one.
furthermore, NTFS is a proprietary file system of Microsoft with closely guarded secrets about its inner workings which is why it has very limited support on other types of operating systems. apple is under no obligation to provide ANY support for something like that. programs like NTFS-3g are essentially unauthorized hacks.

  • External drive won't mount after plugging in iPhone - MacBook 13'' (2,1)

    Hi Support Crew...
    I have a 13" MacBook(2,1) running OS X 10.6.2. This is a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo machine w/ 4 GB RAM & 320 GB hard drive.
Today, I had the Iomega drive plugged in via USB, along with my soundcard (MOTU 828mk2) plugged in via FW. This is a very normal setup for me which has been bug free since I bought this computer over 2 years ago. When I plugged in my iPhone 3G via USB I got an error message which comes up when you incorrectly remove a device. This was strange because I didn't unplug anything, I only plugged in the iPhone. The iPhone was playing music when I plugged it in and I had to unplug and plug is back in to get iTunes to recognize it.
Ever since this happened, my Iomega external drive won't mount. I am able to access it via Disk Utility (and ran the Verify Disk/Repair Disk - everything is "ok"), however I can't access the data on the drive. I really really need the data but of course can't access it to backup.

The fact that I got the "Improperly removed device" error when I plugged in the iPhone makes me think something weird is up and it's not actually the external drive. There is clicking/whining/noise, the drives powers up fine and is recognized by the system but the mount point is now "not mounted".
Does anyone have any idea how to fix? If you live in SF, I will buy you a beer.

  • WD External HD won't mount after moving/deleting files in 10.9

    Hi, Apple Expert Universe.
    Preface first with my setup:
    15" MacBook Pro w/Retina Display, 2.3 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, OS X Mavericks
Western Digital External Hard Drive, 1TB, USB 2.0
(WD applications removed per WD's suggestion after upgrading to OS X 10.9)
Today I was organizing my files on my external hard drive and computer to free up space and eliminate duplicates.  I ran countless files through the application Gemini and moved and deleted hundreds of GB of data over the course of a couple hours.
At one point, I emptied the trash.  I had had difficulty doing this at first because of some permission issues between users, so I went to Finder and did a CTRL + Click on "Empty Trash" to bypass these issues.  This may or may not be relevant to my problem.
Now, my WD HD will not mount on my computer.  I plug it in (have tried both USB ports) and all that shows is the "WD SmartWare" which always shows up alongside the HD itself under "Devices."
In Disk Utility, my named disk is greyed out under the main HD heading.  (So where it tells me about the formatting of the disk and calls it what I've named it, it's greyed out, but it clearly sees the hard drive attached.) I tried to Repair the disk but it stops after a while and tells me that I need to back up my data, reformat the disk, and restore the backed-up files.
I don't know what to do next.  I have looked in several other forums here and elsewhere in Mac-related sites but haven't found anything that exactly matches my problem.  If you know what to do, or have suggestions that won't risk losing data, or know of another string or forum where this has been successfully resolved, I would greatly appreciate the assistance.  I'm an advanced user, but I am also a dummy who put the only copy of my 100 GB photo library and many other things I would like to keep on this drive.  Needless to say, I'm a little stressed out right now.
One last point: I don't have enough space to put my things on my computer's hard drive, but if I have to I'll go buy a new hard drive.  I was planning on doing that anyways because using UBS 2.0 on a MBP Retina Display kind of defeats the point.  Buying a new external hard drive with Thunderbolt is definitely in my future.
    Thanks very much,
    Christie

Repairing Permission only deals with installer receipts and system components. Not with mounting or accessing hard drives.
Have your run Apple DU First Aid? Disk Warrior? Only use latest version for your OS.
Are you trying to clone your system to external and then repairing permissions? trying to boot from them?
If cloning, make sure the "Ignore Ownership" flag is unchecked before cloning (but do repair permissions on external drives you intend to boot from, such as a Firewire drive).
What type of cases and interface are these?

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?

  • External Drive Won't Mount After Power Failure

I was in the process of erasing a hard disk that was repeatedly not behaving correctly when the power went out last night. Now it won't mount at all, though another external disk I have daisy chained to it will mount. I have tried unplugging it (both the firewire cable and power) and it still won't mount. Any ideas? Thanks.

Actually, the opposite is true; you can't reformat a mounted volume. If the device isn't showing up in the left hand side of Disk Utility at all then you've probably got a hardware problem.

  • Disk Image won't mount after 10.4.9 upgrade

After I installed the latest update, OSX can't mount the disk images after download anymore! Any explanation folks? :^)
It doesen't necessarily have to do with the update of course, but it is quite likely I think? Grateful for any help!

Choose any .dmg and get info (command-i). Turn the disclosure triangle under "Open With". It should be "DiskImageMounter". If this is not the chosen application follow this path to choose it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app.
    Then choose "Change all".
If that isn't it. You may be able to repair this with 10.4.9 PPC Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    Let us know.

  • WD external drive won't mount after OS upgrade

After updating to latest Lion my WD 2T external drive wonlt mount. Actually it will mount momentarily and then disapear. I have loads of data on there (pictures, etc) that I do not want to lose.
There is a firmware update on the WD site that is supposed to address this issue, but it very clearly warns to back up your data before updating the firmware. If I can't mount my drive how can I back up my data?
Has anyone else had this problem and succesully fixed it?
    Thanks for any help!

I think I have fixed it (fingers crossed).
I unistalled my virus protection, turned time machine off, verified the disc and remounted it.
So far, so good. It has styed mounted for a coupel of hours so far and all the data seems to be there.

  • Thunderbolt external SSD won't mount

I'm using the Elgato Thunderbolt SSD as an external hard disk with my 2013 MBP. Since I'm also using a Thunderbolt display, I usually daisy-chain the disk to the display.
Recently I disconnected the Thunderbolt display from my computer without unmounting the external SSD. Since this also disconnected the disk, I got the usual ticking-off ("You should eject a disk before disconnecting it").
However... since then, the external disk won't mount. It doesn't show up on the desktop or in Disk Utility, though it DOES show up ("Thunderbolt SSD") in System Information.
Because the SSD gets warm when it's in use, I think it's still working. I just can't access it.
    Can anyone help?

Is the Apple Thunderbolt Display at the END of the daisy-chain? That's where it should be - all other TB devices should be connected first, with the Display at the end of the chain.
As to why you're having a problem getting the TB SSD to work, I'm stumped. It seems as if you've done everything that I would try to do to get everything working... and I'm assuming that you have powered down and unplugged the Display and all other devices for 15 minutes or so?
Just make sure that the Display is at the end of the TB chain - that's really the only advice that I can offer.

  • External Buffalo HD won't mount after update to 10.5.7.

As the title suggests, I have a 250 GB Buffalo external HDD connected to my mac mini (2009). I did the update via software update & after the restart the external HDD won't mount. Any ideas anyone please?

Not exactly a Buffalo drive, but my problem seems very similar, and I'm convinced it occurred after a recent operating system update.
I have a Tascam DP-01FX that I use infrequently and that functions perfectly. I have used the USB connection to transfer files back and forth to three computers; and old G4 Mac (now out of commission), a new iMac (running OS 10.5.8, and an old Dell Inspiron 5000 (running Windows XP). The last time I tried to connect it to the iMac, the System profiler indicated it was connected, but it never mounted on the desktop, and it could not be made to appear in Disk Utility. I tried all varieties of connection; through a high speed hub, directly to the computer (with ALL other USB devices disconnected including the keyboard), etc. I zapped the computer's PRAM, verified and repaired permissions on the system drive. I even unplugged the computer and everything connected to it for half an hour, then reconnected and zapped the PRAM again. Nothing I've done will make the Tascam device mount on the desktop. However, it mounted with no problems on the old Dell Inspiron 5000. The kicker is that I've successfully and easily used the DP-01FX on the iMac on a previous occasion. All this leads me to believe there is something in an Apple software update that is causing this problem. All other USB devices work flawlessly, including an external hard drive that I only use for special projects about once a week. It mounts and un-mounts without any problems. This has got to be an Apple "oops."

  • HT1782 External HD won't mount, suggests disk utility to repair, but I can't back it up.

    Hello,
I'm having some problems with my Western Digital My Passport 1TB.   When I plug it in I receive an error that says "the disk you inserted was not readable".  I've read some suggestions that say to you Repair on Disk Utility, but others that say to back it up first.  Unfortunately the disk won't mount so I can't back it up.  Am I best to unplug it and try it on a new machine?  Or verify? Or repair?
I'm sure this goes without saying, but the contents are extremely valuable to me.  What is the safest method to retrieve it?
Thanks very much for your help.

I would try shutting down, unplug the WD external drive, restart and after getting to my Desktop, plug the WD drive in and see if it's mounted and readable.

Power down and disconnect the FWHD, Restart, zapping the PRAM as detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 and restart. Reconnect the FWHD and power it up. That should do the trick.
