External Display 1440x900 supported?
Hi folks... Perhaps someone here has direct experience with this, or can do a test with your setup.
There's a nice widescreen Samsung LCD monitor with 1440x900 resolution (model number 941BW). Does the external VGA output of a 400/500 MHz TiBook (the first generation model) support this particular resolution? I know it can actually go higher, probably up to 1600x1200, but I don't know if this widescreen ratio (1440x900) is supported.
Thanks of any info...
Hi Kenichi,
The following is from the 400/500 owners manual (the formatting got lost in the copy/paste, but as 1440x900 is not listed, it does not appear to be supported; of course you can always use a different resolution, but as you probably already know, the monitor will look best at its native resolution):
External Monitor in Extended Desktop or Video Mirroring Mode
With the PowerBook G4 display set at 1152 x 768 in millions of colors, an external VGA display supports:
Up to millions of colors in the following resolutions: 512 x 384, 640 x 480, 640 x 870, 800 x 600, 832 x 624, 1024 x 768, and 1152 x 870
Up to thousands of colors in the following resolutions: 1280 x 960, 1280 x 1024, and 1600 x 1200
Note: Selecting a resolution greater than 1152 x 768 in video mirroring mode causes the image on the external monitor to scale down (not take up the entire screen) to match the 1152 x 768 resolution of the internal display.
External Monitor in Display Closed Mode
Up to millions of colors in the following resolutions: 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1152 x 870, 1280 x 960, 1280 x 1024, and 1600 x 1200
Up to thousands of colors in the following resolutions: 1792 x 1344 and 1856 x 1392

My external display does not work
i've got a macbook pro and a Medion extra display.
i bought a adapter and all, It worked. but now after I unplugged it for teh 5th time or so, the mac stopped reacting on the display and conversely.
can somebody help? thanksHello Kaloka Kaloka,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From what I understand you're unable to connect to a specific external display, but your TV does function as an external display. Please follow the relevant instructions in the following article to troubleshoot this issue:

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
Here's what I've tried:
1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
Any advice would be helpful!Hi lancekatigbak,

I have Dell up2414q monitor which is capable of displaying up to 3840 x 2160. But when I connect my 11-inch Macbook Air (the latest 2014 model), which is capable of 2560 x 1600, shows only 1920 x 1080. This is the highest resolution listed in display setting.
I'm using Display Port cable and enabled Display Port 1.2 setting on the monitor. I went to Apple Store and asked, but they had no idea what was wrong. My OS is 10.9.3.Hi there gen2014,

MacBook Air can't connect to external display
2 months ago I bought a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter and its working normally, then after 2 weeks its stopped working. I plugged the adapter in and the VGA cable then the built-in display fades to black (nothing is happening on my external display at all) and it fades back to normal, so it knows that I'm connecting something. I've tried this with all my TVs in the house, no luck. And the screen always does that when I'm trying to connect it and disconnect it.
So today I bought an HDMI and a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, it doesn't work, it acts the same!
It fades to black when I connect the HDMI cable, then it fades back to normal! even when I disconnect the cable
I tried resetting SMC & NVRAM/PRAM, the mac is on, it isn't sleeping, i already tried pressing Detect displays in the Displays settings and it doesn't fix anything.
Running on OSX Yesomite 10.10.2

Loss 3D graphics and can't connect to external display with NVIDIA card
I note this morning that the graphics in 3D mode of iWork (version 4.1 with system 10.6.8) no longer appears in all software suite. The 2D graphics are displayed perfectly. I also notice I can't connect an external display when I am on NVIDIA card but work well with Intel card.
The 3D graphics are printed but not displayed on the screen (it also appear inthe thumbnail). It seems to be a worry to display.
I posted two screen images showing the problem of 3D in Pages.

External display blinking on Macbook Pro Late 2008.
Hello,
Firstly, computer specs:
Macbook Pro, 15-inch, Late 2008
GPU: GeForce 9400M / 9600M GT
8 GB RAM
320 GB Hard Drive
On Mavericks v10.9.3
I want to connect my computer to my TV via a mini displayport to HDMI adapter, for gaming purposes. As such, I want to use the 9600M GT as my GPU. However, when I am in High Performance mode (which uses that GPU), the TV screen blinks on and off every couple of seconds. I have tried resetting my PRAM, which failed. I know it is not the adapter, because it functions when used on another laptop. I know it isn't my port because it works when in Battery Saving (using 9400M GPU). Can anyone help?
In short:
Late 2008 15-inch Macbook Pro, GeForce 9400M / 9600M GT
Mini displayport to HDMI functions when on Battery Saving (GPU = GeForce 9400M)
However, external display blinks on and off when on High Performance (GPU = GeForce 9600M GT)Hi mjbecker2,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
The article linked below has some tips that may help you resolve the flickering issue that you are seeing on your TV.

No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Cheers!

I have used different VGA to mini port adaptors, different VGA cables and connected them to different external monitors and prjectors but the same thing happens. I am starting to think there may be a problem with the macbook itself however, when i have used a HDMI lead and adaptor to external monitors the external display is fine.

External Display No Longer Working (Air & Thunderbolt)
My MacBook Air just decided it no longer wants to work with my external Dell U2711 display via Thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable. Frustrating as this has been working for the past 3 years. Currently running OS X 10.10.2. Have tried PRAM and SMC resets to no avail. Not sure what is going wrong, but looking at the error log it is obviously trying to set it to the wrong resolution "1440 x 900". Previously everything was working great with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Thoughts?

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
If you're still seeing no image on the external display after resetting the SMC and PRAM, then the next step I'd like you to do is to start the device in Safe Mode.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
If you tried all of these steps for your display and the video issues persist, contact Apple technical support or take your Apple computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

I got the following message after the crash, it happens a few times a day, my system is the base with 16gb ram late 2013 15" macbook pro retina. it only happens when i am connected to an external display, I do have a converter from vga to displayport. also, i run 4 different browsers in incognito mode as i do web testing and also have about 30 tabs open and excel and a few other apps open, not sure if this is what makes it happen or if it is the external display? it is under warranty, so if you see anything below that may relate to the hardware i can bring it in and get it fixed.

I'm having trouble with connecting my Macbook Pro to my Samsung TV (via HDMI) to use as an external display. When I plug the HDMI cable into my laptop the screen flashes like it detects another display but then nothing changes and the TV still reads no signal. I've connected the laptop to a different TV and it worked just fine. I tried connecting a different laptop to the TV and that one didn't work either. I've also connected an AppleTV to my Samsung (the one I'm having issues with) using the HDMI cable that I'm trying to connect the laptop with and that worked as well. I've tried both the STB and DVI HDMI ports on the TV and neither of them work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For more information:
It's a late 2013 Retina 13" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4.
The TV is a Samsung UN29F4000.Hi there Elpenor,

External display only works with Macbook open?
I have an Acer AL2623W which works fine as an additional or main screen, but a second after you close the laptop the screen goes blank and it shows an 'input not supported' error. The Macbook stays on, it just doesn't drive the monitor alone. Re-open the Macbook and both work normally!
Hello Siôn Dafydd,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are using an external display with your MacBook Pro and when you close the display on your MacBook Pro, the second display turns off. It sounds as though your MacBook Pro may not be connected to power while using with display closed. Please read over the attached article for information on using a second display in closed-clamshell mode.
