External display and sleep issues

A 15-inch MacBook Pro worked fine with an external display and keyboard prior to the 10.5.2 update. After the update the external display goes dark when the laptop is closed. Hitting the external keyboard momentarily wakes up the external display but then it almost immediately goes back to sleep. It's as if the MBP thinks it's in battery mode and not plugged into an AC outlet.
All Energy Saver settings are to keep the display awake. Could this be a corrupt driver or some other issue?
Thanks.

Theres been a lot of disscussion about this and it's a BIG problem. Check this out:

A lot of us are having the following problems after the graphic update:
-not waking from sleep (waking, but display staying dark, restart is only solution)
-not being able to use in clamshell mode (with external monitor)
-not being able to run external monitor at full resolution
I've also had some weird bugs like the settings and calibration of my external somehow coming over to my MBP monitor after disconnecting the them.
I hope Apple can fix this.

  • External display and sleep

I currently have the "acrylic" Apple 20" display and a new MacBook.
I have the mini DVI to DVI added to the DVI to ADC. All seems to be working nice, but I'd prefer to close the MacBook while using the desktop display. I already moved the menu over to the larger screen, but how can I close the MacBook without putting the system to sleep? Is this not possible?
    Thanks for any help.

You probably looked at those already. I'm not running on an external right now, but there may be an issue with sleeping the machine once it's setup like this. I'm surprised it's happening because closed is fine.

  • BB Flip External Display Caller Notification Issue

    Hello-
I have owned this phone for approximately two weeks; and until today it was working perfectly. As of today the external display is no longer working for "caller ID" or incoming call notification. The temporary fix was to disable the "auto answer" function for convenience, although this does not truly solve the problem.
The question is how can I restore the external display as it was working prior to today with the display of "caller ID" incoming call notification? Incoming emails, SMS previews; continue to work properly on the external display, and the issue appears to be isolated to incoming call notification.
Is this a bug with the device, or is their a fix to the problem?
Any help or guidance greatly appreciated.

  • MBA not always recognizes external display after sleep

    Hi,
I have a 2011 MBA and use it on a external display (Dell 2709w) with the lid open. The issue with this MBA is that after sleep it often (every second time I wake it up) doesn't show anything on my external monitor. In order that the external monitor works again I have to plug the DVI cord out and in or press recognize monitors under monitor settings.
I also did a PMC and SMC reset but both did not help.
I have also done a complete reinstall witch did not help as well.
I also did a test with a MBA from a friend (exact same model) and his always works with the external display after sleep while mine only works every second time.
Could this be a hardware defect? sound pretty strange to me, but who knows...

I have managed to make the Apple Hardware test by just pressing "D" while restarting. The test, however, did not find any error - but this does not surprise me as I think it only tests the ram.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay awake with external display AND power connected

I've been using my MacBook Pro with an external 23" Apple display for several months, always with the lid closed and with no problems. Suddenly, I can no longer keep the MacBook awake when its lid is closed. *The AC power IS connected.* I plug in the display, close the lid, wake the system with my external keyboard, but then it will quickly go to sleep again after a few seconds. No matter what I've tried I get the same behavior.
Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not, I installed the Leopard graphics update a few weeks ago. Could this be a cause?

Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.

  • How do I put an external display to sleep when I am using my MacBook Air for presentation?

How do I put an external display to sleep when I am using my MacBook Air for presentation? I do not want to go to the projector just to turn it off and turn on again after a while? Is there a keyboard shortcut for that?

I want to be able to sleep the external display and at the same time do things in the MacBook.( This feature is useful for me so that I can prepare some things and so that my audience will not see what I am about to show them.)
Is there a feature for Mountain Lion?

  • External displays and projectors

I've been having problems getting my MacbookAir (Mid 2012) running OSX 10.8.2 to use external displays and video projectors via VGA and DVI adapters.
The problem is that if I am connected to my external monitor and disconnect the magsafe power adapter, the displays (both the external monitor and the macbook builtin display) instantly go black/shut off.  If I close the macbook lid and open it, the displays come back momentarily but then switch off again.
If I connect a video projector via VGA while running on battery power only the displays come on momentarily and then switch off / go black/blank. Opening and closing the lid causes the displays to come on momentarily but they quickly go black/shut off again.
I found a work around for this as follows:
    - I had my displays set such that the external display was to be the "main" display (the display with the menu bar at the top and dock at the bottom)
    - I changed the settings so that the bultin display of the macbook was always the "main" display (using the system preferences option for displays and dragging the menu bar over onto the icon for the macbook builtin display)
    - With it set so the macbook's builtin display is always the "main" display it will now connect to external displays with and without the magsafe power adapter being connected- problem solved.
I think there is a bug here and it should be fixed.

Lukewarm13 I think you should start your own post with that question! personally I think you have a faulty unit.
Did some more testing. My wifes laptop will connect to the projector when using a different (short) vga lead and works fine. Then I can switch to the long cable and it still works fine! BUT if I restart the computer it again fails to work with the long cable until I have used the short lead first. weird!!!!
My laptop works fine first time with either cable!

  • When MagSafe unplugged, the external display and laptop need to be restart

Whenever I unplug my MagSafe when using dual-monitors, my MacBook and External monitor need to turned off/restarted. Why is this?

So, you're saying that when you disconnect the power cord (MagSafe) BOTH of your displays either go completely dark while the MacBook is still running or freeze (static image, nothing gets updated) or begin to display distorted video. Then when the displays enter one of these states they remain dysfunctional until you power cycle each one (which would mean that for the MacBook's display you'd have to restart the MacBook). Otherwise, are you suggesting that your MacBook crashes when you disconnect the MagSafe? Also, do you have to reconnect the MagSafe before you can restart the displays (if this is the case, then are you sure that your battery just isn't "dead")?
What type of connector are you using for the external display? Is it Mini DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA? If DVI, is it dual-link?
In any case, without additional details I'd guess that you have a grounding problem between your external display and the MacBook. This shouldn't happen unless there is a problem with your video cables or adapters or with the ports on either the MacBook or your external display. Have you tried connecting the 3.5mm audio output on your MacBook to an audio input on the external display (as a test to provide another grounding path)? Also, is your MacBook power supply plugged into the same AC outlet as is your external display?
I guess the MagSafe connector could also be at fault if it is shorting to ground when you remove it from the port on the MacBook. What happens if you disconnect the power supply directly from the AC plug and then disconnect the MagSafe?
Lastly, is there any chance that you are getting a static electric discharge when you touch the MacBook to remove the MagSafe connector?

I would like to darken my Mac Air screen, so I can use may external display and the keyboard on the notebook--it is possible on a PC-does it work on a Mac?

    Sure it's possible.
Go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo on the top left of the menu).
Choose "Display".  There's a slider bar for the screen brightness.  Adjust it and you're all set.

  • External Display and AC charger (together ) Causes 70% CPU usage :(

Ok, here is what I have :
    - MacBook Pro 13" early 2011
    - Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3
    - External Display ( Samsung SyncMaster 2333)
    - MiniDisplay port to VGA adapter.
    Here is my problem :
When I'm using my computer normally with AC charger plugged in everything is normal, once I plugin the external monitor, a process called LoginWindow takes up to 70% of my cpu and the cooling fan goes noisy.. If I unplug the AC power, everything is back to normal, and the external monitor keeps working normally, AC back -> 70% cpu is back, if unplug the monitor, everything goes back to normal again, In conclusion, external monitor and AC power doesn't work together...
PLEASE IS THERE A FIX FOR THIS ?
    thanks for reading.

Hey I figured something out with "insomniaT" ( a prefPane that prevents macbook pro from going to sleep when closing the lid ) ... I don't know why this worked but it did
    here is the steps :
    - while the power cord is unplugged and external monitor plugged in,I activate insomniaT
    - then I closed the lid of my macbook pro and plugged the power cord, and then I woke up the MBP with an external usb keyboard...
--> the Samsung monitor woke up and worked normally, LoginWindow process works fine ( 0.1 to 0.4% of cpu )
IT WAS ALL LUCK, have no idea how this worked ...
    thanks.

  • BB Flip External Display and Auto Answer

    Hi,
I've only had this phone for 2 wks and I'm already having an issue--for some reason the external display won't display incoming calls and once I flip it open it automatically answers. I couldn't find the option on the phone that would allow me to at least turn off the Auto answer. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Press the green phone key. Then press the menu key and select Options. Next select General Options and finally change the auto-answer to the desired option.

  • T410s External Display and Safely Remove Hardware Problems

I have two problems with my new T410s with Windows 7.  First, I use it with an external display.  It works fine when I set the dispaly settings to Projector Only and set the power settings to Do Nothing When I Close the Lid.  However, when I restart the computer the screen image on the external display is often mis-sized, does not cover the whole screen, and has part of the image cut off.  If I open the lid and change the display setting to computer only, then back to projector only it works fine again.
Any ideas on why it will not hold the proper setting when I turn the computer off?
The second problem is common to both my wife's X201 with Windows 7 and my new T410s.  If you click on Safely Remove Hardware/Eject Mass Storage Device both computers will tell us it is now safe to remove our device.  However, if the device is one of our compact external backup drives the device's light will still be on and the disk will still be spinning, so it seems it cannot really be safe to remove it.  This happens even if we wait a minute after the safely remove indication to see if the external drive shuts down after a short delay - it doesn't!
As a result, my wife and I are shutting down our computers whenever we want to remove an external storage device.  Any comments or ideas would be welcome!

For anyone who is concerned about the "safely remove hardware" issue noted in my original post, I have done more research and found that Windows 7 maintains power to the USB ports after safely remove has been executed in order to allow devices like MP3 players to continue charging after they are safely removed.  Windows XP actually shut off the power to the USB ports and this is what I was used to until I got a new T410s with Windows 7.
This means an external HDD's disk will also keep spinning.  However, the safely remove sequence is SUPPOSED to cause the disk's heads to move away from the disk and return to their at rest position, so there should be no damage to the HDD if it is removed even though the disk is still spinning.
Since I have no way to assure this is happening I am still turning off my computer and making sure the disk has stopped spinning before I remove my USB HDD.
I would appreciate comments from people who know more than me about this issue, especially if my info. above is not correct!

  • SSD and sleep issues - 2006 17" MBP

My 17" MBP (2,1) add SSD to optical bay project went very well! I'm surprised at the speed bump it's experiencing.
Only 1 issue so far - as the new boot volume is in the optical bay, the machine can't seem to wake it from sleep. Should I just disable sleep totally, delete the sleep image, or some other option? (I've read posts about sleep numbers, SATA vs ATA, ect)
FYI - there is no battery in it - currertly waiting on replacement. It's powered by the cable. Perhaps this will solve itself when the battery arrives.
    Thank you!

    tjk,
The fact that the external display works perfecty would rule out any issue with the GPU, wouldn't it?
I'm debating whether to try the cable or to just get a whole replacement screen, since the old one was starting to dim anyway...
In most cases, it would certainly lean in that direction, but I don't believe it would totally rule it out. It has different jobs to do/capabilities depending on outputting to internal or external display.
