External Display Blurry when Mirrored

I have a 20" viewsonic VX2035 that is hooked up to my gaming rig. If I use it with my MBP and choose the mirror displays setting, when the Viewsonic is at its proper resolution (1680x1050) everything looks blurry. When at its correct resolution and not mirrored it looks normal. And it looks normal but slightly distorted if mirrored and at the 1440x900.
Any ideas?

I've found exactly the same thing.
In "mirror mode", the external display (for me a 23" cinemadisplay HD) uses the macbookpro's internal screen's resolution (though it does uprez it), even though on screen preferences it may be set much higher (1920x1200 on mine). Hence the fuzziness.
In "dual display" mode, and in lid-closed mode (where the external display is the only one on), it works perfectly.
Not sure why this is. If anyone has a fix, please post.

  • Can i choose the resolution of my external display for when the lid is closed when my lid is open

When I close the lid of my MacBook Pro for an external display apple chooses a resolution that isn't compatible with my display can I choose the resolution when the lid is open in any way of my external display for the mode when the lid is closed?

Hi there, I had a similar problem and was unable to resolve it.  I spent about an hour on the phone with a very helpful AppleCare rep who was also completely stuck.  It would seem that the only solution is to choose a setting with trial and error while the lid is closed.
My MacBook ended up getting stuck on a closed-lid reoslution that wasn't supported, so I had to do a screen-share with another device to see what the video card was sending to the external display and change it back that way.

  • External display issue when Macbook wakes up

    Hi there,
I have an external display (Samsung 920nw) used as an extension of my desktop. When I go to sleep so does my Macbook... I close the lid and the computer goes to sleep mode within seconds (the white led on the front right slowly flashes confirming that the computer got to sleep).
The problem starts in the morning when I wake up the Macbook. The white led is still and not flashing anymore and when I lift the lid only the external display works with a poor resolution. The macbook display remains off. To solve the problem I need to detect displays and rearrange everything again between the screens.
I am not sure but I believe that sometime during the night the Macbook wakes up and he thinks that I am using the external display as the only display.
I want to lift the lid and both displays to be working as they were before going to sleep mode. Is anyone facing the same problem and/or have any clue of what is happening?
I have a bluetooth mouse and a usb hub with printer, pen drive, external hard drive attached to the macbook.
    Thanks for helping.

Could be caused by a backup drive or some other application running in the background.  There's no way to be sure without looking at your crash logs.  I keep my computer on but I always close down my apps at night to protect them from power outages.

  • Internal/External displays blank when external connected while sleeping

When I connect my external display to my MBP (late 2011) while it's sleeping, the MBP awakens but both the internal & external display are blank.
The MBP is running ML and is connected to external display via DVI. No response to external Logitech keyboard or internal keyboard. Currently my only recourse is to ssh in from a co-located Vista machine & 'sudo reboot'.
If MBP has recently been used  (say < 5 min or so), everything's fine -- external display fires up & external KBD/Mouse work.
I'd be interested in any way to prevent this problem if I forget to open MBP for a moment before connecting Power/DVI/USB. Alternately, a command
I could issue via SSH to reinitialize display would be great.
    Thanks. Kent

  • External display issues when waking display from sleep

After waking my external display from sleep (the entire Macbook was not asleep, just the external display), the garbled colored dots kept appearing at the top and bottom of the screen, only then for the entire display to go black, then about 5-10 seconds later the images comes back, but with the garbled colored dots at the bottom. It will keep doing this over and over again.
It's only happened once so far, but I seem to remember reading about some issues when waking from sleep with the new unibody Macbooks with regards to external displays. Is this a known issue with these Macbooks?

There have been similar reports. However, not all external displays in combination with a MacBook will exhibit this problem. Thus, it seems either display specific or something that is caused by a cross between one display and a MacBook.
I assume that you are using one of Appe's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters to connect to the external display. In that case have you installed the latest firmware update for the adapter?

  • Use external display only - without mirroring?

I've seen some folks using a Mac mini as a media center. I have a 12" PB and I was wondering if there's some hack for convincing the PB that there's -only- the external display (let's say 1366x768 or something similar in a wide-screen LCD) so that all video appears there and I wouldn't have the PB's internal 1024x768 even seen by the Display System Prefs.
Basically I'm trying to use the PB as if it didn't have any built-in display.
    Advice and suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Barry

Well, you can use an external display and not even worry about what's on your PowerBook's screen, if you know what I mean.
Is there a reason why you want everything only shown on the external?
Again, if you have an external widescreen, you can make things appear there by choosing that as your main screen, and let your PowerBook screen be your secondary.
I just don't get, no offense, why you wouldn't want your PowerBook's LCD to function. I mean, if it was broken, then that would be a reason. And even then, your PowerBook will work with a broken screen if connected to an external where then it would definitely be forced to adhere to the resolution of the monitor.
For choosing which is your primary and which screen is your secondary when doing an extended desktop mode, go to system preferences and displays, and then there is a screen where it shows two boxes representing your two monitors. An option to drag the menu bar left or right will determine which is your main and which is your secondary. When dragging, it will "light up" with 1 or 2 on the box.

  • HT3131 Macbook pro + external display sleeps when lid closed and 'clicking' noise

Hi all, new mid-2012 macbook pro non-retina user, I have an PC external display with Microsoft USB wired keyboard and mouse pair (the keyboard and mouse are wireless but connected via a USB desktop receiver) but even when all connected up, shutting the mac lid always turns off external display too and no amount of pressing keys or mouse clicking wakes up the display again. External display only wakes up when I open the lid again. There's also a clicking noise from the mac every time I close the lid with external display connected. Any ideas? I've tried a number of things, wondering possibly if my cheapo (non-Apple) VGA external display to Minidisplayport adaptor is the culprit? Also, everytime I connect the display I have to go to display settings to get it to recognise the external display. I haven't installed any software for the USB mouse and keyboard , the macbook recognises it ok.

    Hi Itsfixed,
It sounds like you are having issues running your MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode (computer closed but awake, connected to an external display). If possible, you may want to see if it behaves as expected when connected to a wired USB keyboard and mouse as outlined in the first section of the article; wireless USB (non-Bluetooth) keyboards may not be recognized by the system the same way for the purposes of running with the display closed.

  • External Display flashes when attached via DVI to MBP

When I attach the Samsung Syncmaster 204B to my MBP running 10.5.4, the external screen appears for about 5 mins and then it randomly flashes off and on. The only property that can be adjusted form the MBP is the resolution. Does anyone have any hints on how to fix it?

    Hey there,
I'm having the same problem and I "May" have a solution. Mine is the Syncmaster 2493. Brought it home last night, set it up, basked in it's glory and then phrrrt....it goes bright and turns off. Over and over. Anyway, by searching the forums here, a rep mentioned there were problems with the "Autosource" feature in the monitor menu itself.
So if you go into the monitor menu, using the buttons on the monitor, and scroll until you get to the Autosource feature, then toggle it to Manual.
I did this and it worked great.....at least last night it did. This morning it's still sort of happening but that was after I made the monitor a bit brighter. Anyway, see if this works for you.

  • Cannot change display resolution when connected to external display

On my 2.0GHz 13" MacBook, I have no problem with the display resolution when connecting to external display/projector when I am running in Mac OS, everything work perfectly! But things start to get messy when I am running in Windows VISTA 32 (installed within the Boot Camp 2.1). Whenever I connect to any external display/projector via a MiniDisplay-to-VGA cable, the resolutions on both my MacBook LCD and external display/projector drop to 640x480. And i am not able increase the resolution in the Display Settings. Does this mean that I have not installed the latest version of display drivers? Or is it that Apple did not provide the VISTA 32 drivers (in Boot Camp 2.1) that is compatible with the Mini Display port.

    Cool!
I'm glad you have it fixed.

  • Spaces - Automatic re-arranging when connecting/disconnecting external display

In my role I have to constantly disconnect and reconnect my external display. When I do this my spaces rearrange and the applications within those spaces also move around.
Is there a way to stop this as it takes me a bit of time to put them back in the right place and becomes a little frustrating.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks, Brad.

Hey BSteely and thanks for your reply!
I must say it seems to work better to plug in the cable when the display is on and also wake the computer before plugging in the cable. I still have the shadow under the arrow when doing this. However, when unplugging it doesn't seem to matter. I've now unplugged the external display while the computer is on and then I close the "lid" (display) of the MacBook Pro. Upon wakeup shadow under the cursor is gone and a few days ago the computer just "woke up" to a black screen. I had to force restart.
So, first opening/waking the computer before connecting the display seems to work better, but if I want to use just the external display it's kind of awkward having to first wake, then connect display, USB keyboard etc., then close "lid" and wait for computer to sleep and finally wake the computer again using the USB keyboard. All in all I really think it could work a bit more smoothly, *especially since Apple makes both the hardware and the software.* Well, they don't make the Dell display of course...
Anyone know how well/different all this work when having an Apple Cinema display?

  • My external display via VGA only works when macbook air is shut?

I'm using a MDP to VGA to connect my 2012 Macbook Air to an external display. When the Air is open I can view only the desktop (no open apps). The open apps only appear on the external monitor when I close the Air (after a couple of seconds)!! Have I accidently altered some settings somewhere??? Makes no sense to me.

Update - I ended up spending about an hour on the phone with a very helpful rep from AppleCare.  He was also stumped by this problem.  We ended up solving it by using a remote screen-share app that allowed him to see what my video card was sending to the external display, and he directed me over the phone to change the settings (quite funny really - it was literally "move your mouse up a tiny bit, now click, now left, etc).
So, my problem is solved for now, albeit in a very cumbersome way.  Still amazed that there's no way to fix this properly.

  • Disconnecting from external display changes background, disconnect server shares, inactivates desktop icons.

I have a user working on a MacBook Pro, Lion OS X 10.8.2, connected to an external display. When disconnecting from the external display the background picture changes, he can’t open documents saved to desktop, and the connection to the server shares is lost.  Rebooting does not resolve the issue while it is disconnected from the external display.  If he reconnects the MacBook back to the external monitor sometimes he has to reboot to get everything back to normal.  It almost seems like it is logging him into a different account or profile or something like that (please excuse my messy terminology as most of our users are still using PCs).  However if you look at what account is logged in, it is still the same account that he logged in with that morning.  The Mac is not authenticating to the network, just connecting to server shares.  Has anyone experienced this issue before and if so is there a fix for it?

The Mac has a long history of assuming that ANY adapter still present means the display is still present -- you need to remove the adapter as well as the cable, if present.
So my theory articulated above is that the disconnect is not registered correctly. This would mean that the second display is still seen as present. You could check this by invoking:
    System Preferences > Displays ...
and looking for the Arrange pane (shown above) which is ONLY present when multiple displays are attached. More detailed information can be found in About this Mac  > ( More info ) Graphics & Displays ...
... specifically the NAME of each attached display is shown or an indication (no display connected):

  • Leopard dock and external display

recently, i've switched the dock position from bottom to left and i now find that the dock gets positioned to the left edge of the external display when the DVI-VGA adaptor is plugged in and the external display is not mirroring the built-in display. i think that if i could "move" the external to be attached to the right side of the internal, that the dock would stay on the internal, but i haven't found an option to change the position of the external display.
have you experienced this? any solutions? thanks.

    Hello Dan,
Welcome to Apple discussions. It's been a little while since I ran with dual monitors, but is it not achieved by dragging the graphical representation of the monitors around in the Monitors pane of system preferences?
I'm sure you would have checked there already, apologies if so - if not, you can do other changes there like setting the default primary display (the one that shows the menu bar) by dragging the menu bar graphic between screens.

  • PBG4 12" - Setting external display to something other than 4:3?

    Hello,
I've been using a 12" PBG4 as a basic media center for watching movies via mini-DVI to composite out, hooked up to an old 4:3 TV. Recently I've purchased an HDTV and am still using the 12" PBG4 as a media center. Obviously, the quality of the video isn't HD (as I'm going out via composite), but honestly, it's good enough (for me anyway).
But, my one problem is, the 12" PBG4 doesn't allow me to output the video (either when mirroring the displays or when mirroring is off) at an aspect ratio other than 4:3. Thus, on the HDTV, everything is stretched. To compensate, I have manually distort the aspect ratio of the video I'm watching (through the video software) to make it look the way it's supposed to. This works great for video, but when I do anything else on the HDTV, it's stretched.
So, I'm wondering if anyone knows how I'd go about setting an external display to an aspect ration other than 4:3? In the display preferences, all available options are 4:3?
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Thank

If it is stretched on the HD-TV set the HD-TV to have a 4:3 resolution. Remember widescreen aspect ratios aren't always 16:9. If you read DVD specs on their back they have varied possibilities:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widescreen
You can always reduce the video window to fit the onscreen resolution.

  • Satellite L500 - How to show external display after closing lid?

    Hi,
i`m using the Satellite L500-120 Notebook, and before installing Windows 7 the laptop had a very comfortable function, when i applied an external display.
When i closed the lid of my notebook, the desktop was shown on my external display (with the native resolution of the external display), so i didn`t have to
switch anything at the Control Panel. In Windows 7, i`m missing this function. I already tried to use the Control Panel, but there are no settings, which fits
with the earlier ones. I can duplicate the display, in order to see my desktop screen at my external display, but with the notebook resolution of 1366 x 768.
If i extend the displays, then there is only the background image at the external display, but this time with the native resolution.
So my question is, how to conifgure Windows to recognize that i closed the lid, and that the desktop screen has to be shown on my external display?
Or do i have to install one of the Toshiba applications, which i had before, that realized this function?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi
Im not a Windows 7 user because I will wait until it will be released offical but I hope I can help you a little bit:
First of all in Power Management you can choose the action what happens if you close the Lid (e. g. sleep, turn off, etc.). This action should be disabled because otherwise the notebook will shut down or something else.
Then I think you have to install the display driver for your notebook. You can try the Vista driver because the most of them are work on Windows 7.
Then you should be able to set the correct screen resolution for external monitor.
A working display driver is important for clone or extends monitors so check this!!
