External Display flashes when attached via DVI to MBP

When I attach the Samsung Syncmaster 204B to my MBP running 10.5.4, the external screen appears for about 5 mins and then it randomly flashes off and on. The only property that can be adjusted form the MBP is the resolution. Does anyone have any hints on how to fix it?

Hey there,
I'm having the same problem and I "May" have a solution. Mine is the Syncmaster 2493. Brought it home last night, set it up, basked in it's glory and then phrrrt....it goes bright and turns off. Over and over. Anyway, by searching the forums here, a rep mentioned there were problems with the "Autosource" feature in the monitor menu itself.
So if you go into the monitor menu, using the buttons on the monitor, and scroll until you get to the Autosource feature, then toggle it to Manual.
I did this and it worked great.....at least last night it did. This morning it's still sort of happening but that was after I made the monitor a bit brighter. Anyway, see if this works for you.

  • New 27" Thunderbolt Display Flickers when attached to new 27" iMac

I'm using a new 27" iMac. I require a dual-monitor configuration so yesterday I purchased a new 27" Thunderbolt display and plugged its built-in Thunderbolt cable into the Thunderbolt port of the iMac. I now have a huge desktop space that spans two monitors. With that in mind…
At least once every few minutes the new Thunderbolt display blacks out (i.e. flickers) for approximately one second. The symptom is very similar to what a Windows-attached display does when the screen resolution is changed. A quick Google search indicates others are experiencing the same problem although most complainants are using a MacBook or Mini, not an iMac.
Apple posted a firmware update for the Thunderbolt display a few days ago. I installed it successfully but the problem remains. Any advice?

    UPDATE:
I received a call back from a senior tech at Apple. The salient points are as follows:
    (1) Apple engineers are well aware of the problem.
    (2) They plan to release a firmware update for the display at some indeterminate time.
    (3) The fix for this problem will not be bundled into the forthcoming 10.7.2 Lion update.
Given that the flickering problem renders the Thunderbolt monitor virtually unusable as a desktop extension for a 27" iMac, combined with the fact that Apple has no idea when a fix for the problem will be available, my decision to return the monitor for a full refund is a virtual certainty.
AppleCare objected to my conclusion that the Thunderbolt monitor is "incompatible" with the iMac. Perhaps they're right. I'm not super technical so it's possible that I used the wrong term. It's a semantic distinction though. The bottom line is that Thunderbolt displays flicker when attached to a brand new 27" iMac and my personal opinion is that one is better off not purchasing this device until Apple fixes this major flaw.
Apple asked me to make a video of the Thunderbolt display manifesting the problem. Here it is.

  • External display flashes and shows 'snow'. (Video of behaviour included)

Since yesterday, my Macbook Pro is acting strange. When I connect it to an external monitor, it usually works. Everything goes well for 10 to 30 minutes, and at some point the display starts tearing, showing snow, and flashing. These flashes get worse and worse, up till the point where I have to reboot. Rebooting seems to help a little. Whenever the laptop hasn't been used for a few minutes it works correctly again, for a short while. (This makes me conclude it's some sort of heat-related issue)
The issue is present on multiple monitors using different DVI cables. I only have one mini-displayport to dvi adapter, so the problem could be there too.
This problem does not affect the internal display of the macbook in any way.
Here is a short video showing the behaviour:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BotUqHb3dM
What should I do? Try to figure out wether it's the mbp or the connector or just bring it in for a repair. (It's less than a year old)

I have had similar issues with my 15" MBP. Occasionally my external monitor will go 1980s and display what looks like crappy tv reception.
Also, connecting or disconnecting an external display (via the single link mini display port to dvi adapter) has a tendency to lock up the entire machine (both displays black, won't respond to keyboard or mouse) until the power is cycled.
Also, my built in monitor has a habit of flickering/glitching lines.
These problems seem to happen regardless of which graphics card is active.

  • External display issue when Macbook wakes up

    Hi there,
I have an external display (Samsung 920nw) used as an extension of my desktop. When I go to sleep so does my Macbook... I close the lid and the computer goes to sleep mode within seconds (the white led on the front right slowly flashes confirming that the computer got to sleep).
The problem starts in the morning when I wake up the Macbook. The white led is still and not flashing anymore and when I lift the lid only the external display works with a poor resolution. The macbook display remains off. To solve the problem I need to detect displays and rearrange everything again between the screens.
I am not sure but I believe that sometime during the night the Macbook wakes up and he thinks that I am using the external display as the only display.
I want to lift the lid and both displays to be working as they were before going to sleep mode. Is anyone facing the same problem and/or have any clue of what is happening?
I have a bluetooth mouse and a usb hub with printer, pen drive, external hard drive attached to the macbook.
    Thanks for helping.

Could be caused by a backup drive or some other application running in the background.  There's no way to be sure without looking at your crash logs.  I keep my computer on but I always close down my apps at night to protect them from power outages.

  • Internal/External displays blank when external connected while sleeping

When I connect my external display to my MBP (late 2011) while it's sleeping, the MBP awakens but both the internal & external display are blank.
The MBP is running ML and is connected to external display via DVI. No response to external Logitech keyboard or internal keyboard. Currently my only recourse is to ssh in from a co-located Vista machine & 'sudo reboot'.
If MBP has recently been used  (say < 5 min or so), everything's fine -- external display fires up & external KBD/Mouse work.
I'd be interested in any way to prevent this problem if I forget to open MBP for a moment before connecting Power/DVI/USB. Alternately, a command
I could issue via SSH to reinitialize display would be great.
    Thanks. Kent

  • External monitor flashes when scrolling large Photoshop images

    Hello,
My external monitor is flashing when I scroll around large Photoshop files. I'm assuming it the graphics processor switching modes. I've got a brand new Macbook Pro 2.66 i7 17" computer and am using a 23" Cinema HD Display (clear bezel) with the Apple ADC to DVI adapter.
How can I get this to stop?
    Thanks for the help,

According to Apple with an external monitor connected only the nvidia card is used. So it's not changing graphics cards. I would think it's more a driver issue or the usual blinking screen fault of nvidia (timing issue). Send in a report to Apple describing the fault.
One other thing to check is your cables, from what i gather from your post you have a chain adc-dvi-mdp rattle them, and clean them with spray to take away oxides.

  • PB Al 15" won't display to Dell 2001FP via DVI

After hooking up a Dell 2001FP display to my PowerBook Al 1.5Ghz/15" via DVI, the external display displays nothing. The Mac senses the display per Monitors system preference and Apple System Profiler but nothing is output to the display. I'm using Dell's bundled DVI cable (which appears to be a DVI-D single link, per http://www.comsol.com.au/dvi.asp). DVI works just fine via PB G4 1.5Ghz/12".
As a workaround, the VGA is working fine from the PowerBook to this display. I'd really, really much rather use DVI. Is there any way to get this PB Al 15" to work via DVI to the Dell 2001FP? Possibly via some different kind of cable?
Scanning the Apple forums didn't get me a direct answer. I vaguely remember something unique about the 15" DVI with certain third party configurations.
    PB G4 1.5Ghz/15"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Dell 2001FP

    Try resetting your NVRAM…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Another thing to try is to change the ends of the DVI-D cable. I too am using the included cable that came with my Dell display and it works just dandy. Obviously if it works with your 12" PowerBook then the problem is with the 15" PowerBook.
It is possible that the 15" is trying to display at a setting that your display can't handle. What you can do is to open the Displays System Preference, click on the Gather Displays button and try different settings. Make sure you start at a 60Hz refresh rate.
To be honest it's a bit weird that you're having a problem because it, as I'm sure you're aware, should just work.

  • External display won't work over DVI

I've got an ViewSonic vx2025wm hooked up to my MacBook Pro. It used to work fine over DVI, but some time ago the monitor stopped being able to detect the signal and I had to switch over to VGA (via my Apple DVI-to-VGA adapter). That works fine at the full resolution of the external display, but the image quality leaves something to be desired.
Strangely, the external display works just fine in Windows XP via Boot Camp. Oh, the irony!
Any ideas on how to get this working again? I dread the OS X re-install.

Same problem here. Had a Dell 30" monitor plugged in for a long time. Suddenly stopped working yesterday. The symptoms: the Mac detects the external display and "thinks" it's got it there (I can tell because the active content of the window is gone on the laptop's screen), but the display does not successfully see the output from the Mac (it shines its orange "no signal" light).
Restarting does not seem to help.
I should test it with a new display cable, but am a little reluctant to do this, as the dual link DVI cables required for this monitor are so expensive, and because previous posters on this topic have tried swapping cables with no result.

  • External display issues when waking display from sleep

After waking my external display from sleep (the entire Macbook was not asleep, just the external display), the garbled colored dots kept appearing at the top and bottom of the screen, only then for the entire display to go black, then about 5-10 seconds later the images comes back, but with the garbled colored dots at the bottom. It will keep doing this over and over again.
It's only happened once so far, but I seem to remember reading about some issues when waking from sleep with the new unibody Macbooks with regards to external displays. Is this a known issue with these Macbooks?

There have been similar reports. However, not all external displays in combination with a MacBook will exhibit this problem. Thus, it seems either display specific or something that is caused by a cross between one display and a MacBook.
I assume that you are using one of Appe's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters to connect to the external display. In that case have you installed the latest firmware update for the adapter?

  • HT3131 Macbook pro + external display sleeps when lid closed and 'clicking' noise

Hi all, new mid-2012 macbook pro non-retina user, I have an PC external display with Microsoft USB wired keyboard and mouse pair (the keyboard and mouse are wireless but connected via a USB desktop receiver) but even when all connected up, shutting the mac lid always turns off external display too and no amount of pressing keys or mouse clicking wakes up the display again. External display only wakes up when I open the lid again. There's also a clicking noise from the mac every time I close the lid with external display connected. Any ideas? I've tried a number of things, wondering possibly if my cheapo (non-Apple) VGA external display to Minidisplayport adaptor is the culprit? Also, everytime I connect the display I have to go to display settings to get it to recognise the external display. I haven't installed any software for the USB mouse and keyboard , the macbook recognises it ok.

    Hi Itsfixed,
It sounds like you are having issues running your MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode (computer closed but awake, connected to an external display). If possible, you may want to see if it behaves as expected when connected to a wired USB keyboard and mouse as outlined in the first section of the article; wireless USB (non-Bluetooth) keyboards may not be recognized by the system the same way for the purposes of running with the display closed.
    Regards,
    - Brenden

  • I get a dark screen on startup, but the result is ok. If an external display is also attached, the usual grey screen and gear appears. What is this?

When I boot my macbook pro (mid 2011) I have a blank screen until the log-on screen appears. Otherwise everything is fine. I am not used to that but rather the grey screen followed by apple logo and then the gear. If, however, I have an external display attached (projector), I get the usual screens at the external display's resolution. Is this a problem? Is there some setting to change? Thanks.

  • Can i choose the resolution of my external display for when the lid is closed when my lid is open

When I close the lid of my MacBook Pro for an external display apple chooses a resolution that isn't compatible with my display can I choose the resolution when the lid is open in any way of my external display for the mode when the lid is closed?

Hi there, I had a similar problem and was unable to resolve it.  I spent about an hour on the phone with a very helpful AppleCare rep who was also completely stuck.  It would seem that the only solution is to choose a setting with trial and error while the lid is closed.
My MacBook ended up getting stuck on a closed-lid reoslution that wasn't supported, so I had to do a screen-share with another device to see what the video card was sending to the external display and change it back that way.

    Hello, Murali Muthyalu.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Intermittent issues such as this can be difficult to troubleshoot.  However, try forcing all applications to close in multitasking and restart the device.  Once this is done test to see if the behavior persists.

  • External Display Blurry when Mirrored

I have a 20" viewsonic VX2035 that is hooked up to my gaming rig. If I use it with my MBP and choose the mirror displays setting, when the Viewsonic is at its proper resolution (1680x1050) everything looks blurry. When at its correct resolution and not mirrored it looks normal. And it looks normal but slightly distorted if mirrored and at the 1440x900.
    Any ideas?

I've found exactly the same thing.
In "mirror mode", the external display (for me a 23" cinemadisplay HD) uses the macbookpro's internal screen's resolution (though it does uprez it), even though on screen preferences it may be set much higher (1920x1200 on mine). Hence the fuzziness.
In "dual display" mode, and in lid-closed mode (where the external display is the only one on), it works perfectly.
Not sure why this is. If anyone has a fix, please post.
