External display: is Theater Mode supported?

ATI has a feature on Windows called "Theater Mode" when an external display is attached: when you start a video on the primary display in a window, it shows up full-screen on the extended display. This is really useful when the extended display is a TV or projector.
Does anyone know if the new iMac supports this feature?

  • USB to HDMI adapter for external display in clamshell mode?

    Hello.
Does anyone know of a USB to HDMI (or DVI) adapter so that I can connect an external display (with an HDMI or DVI cable) to a USB port on my Macbook air?
I need to run it in clamshell mode, mirroring the Air display. The Monoprice  USB to HDMI adapter (which uses DislplayLink drivers) I tried does not work properly in clamshell mode with mirroring (though it works in arrangement mode).  I know I can use the Thunderbolt port, but I need to leave this free for a Firewire device.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem, but using USB devices and Displaylink software.  I know there are issues with Displaylink software as they say the problem is with Apple.  I have three external monitors with a late 2008  I Macbook Pro which gives me four screens.  I was able to get two to work + the Macbook, but there were so many issues, like you described, that I have given up and I am just using the Mini Display port which gives me one external and the Macbook.  Looks like we will just have to wait until Apple does something.  I have found no other solutions at this point - hardware or otherwise.

  • Can i choose the resolution of my external display for when the lid is closed when my lid is open

When I close the lid of my MacBook Pro for an external display apple chooses a resolution that isn't compatible with my display can I choose the resolution when the lid is open in any way of my external display for the mode when the lid is closed?

Hi there, I had a similar problem and was unable to resolve it.  I spent about an hour on the phone with a very helpful AppleCare rep who was also completely stuck.  It would seem that the only solution is to choose a setting with trial and error while the lid is closed.
My MacBook ended up getting stuck on a closed-lid reoslution that wasn't supported, so I had to do a screen-share with another device to see what the video card was sending to the external display and change it back that way.

  • Connect to TV as external display

I have been using VGA cable to a samsung digital.  I used to set up using Fn F7 and then FnSpacebar to switch between screens.  Now FnF7 changes my resolution and external display screen reads "Mode Not Supported"  Any ideas?

Needed 1024X68 res but do not remember ever having to do that.

  • I have an external display, but the screen ratio is messed up in games.

    I've got:
    - A new MacBook Pro 15" with Lion (a month old maybe), it's the 2.2 GHz one (with 8 GB RAM)
    - A Samsung Syncmaster BX2235 screen, working at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels
    - A VGA connector to plug the Syncmaster in to the laptop.
    My problem:
When I normally use my laptop with my external display in Lion it supports 1920x1080 without a problem (see photo 1), when I watch a movie in full screen too, but as soon as I start up a game (any game: WoW, TF2, Worms, etc) in full screen and I set the resolution to 1920x1080 it'll mess up the screen (see photo 2). I'm not sure if you see it at first glimpse but there are black bars at both the left and the right side of the screen, the left one is bigger than the right one.
Anyway in WoW there is a function that you can run the game in Windowed but still Full Screen. When I do that I can access the top OSX bar (the one with the clock), and click on the display icon. It now shows there are 2 versions of 1920x1080 @ 60Hz (see photo 3). If I click the one that isn't checked, it'll fix the screen and I can view the game on this display exactly the way I want it.
I had an older MacBook Pro (from 2009, 15", 2.8GHz Dual Core) running Snow Leopard, I played some of the same games on that and I NEVER had problems with this screen. I gave it to my sis so I tested it again and there are still no problems.
Now naturally my question is: what is the problem and how can I fix it?

  • Highest resolution for external display for late 2012 retina?

I have a 15" late 2012 MBP with retina display.  I'd like to get an external monitor but I'm not sure about the highest resolution for an external display this Mac will support.  It looks like the 4K displays with only work with later models.  So what are you using and how do you like it?
    Thanks
    Amy

Yes, the 2012 MBP w/ Retina Display will support an external 4K display (using the Thunderbolt/mini display port)

  • External display locked to 640x480 after Windows 8.1 upgrade on 2011 MBP 17 in

I just upgraded to 8.1 from Windows 8 in Bootcamp on my 2011 MBP 17in. Windows 8 ran fine and I was able to connect my Mac to an external display just fine.
After the upgrade to 8.1 when I connect my external display it will only support a resolution of 640x480  and only shows a resolution 640x480 as the is the maximum res it can go. I have also loaded the Windows display driver to the Dell E228WFP to no avail. Any external display I try only shows a resolution of 640x480.
I have removed the AMD Radeon HD7400M from device manager and re-installed the drivers from boot camp 5 but this doesn't resolve the issue.
    Any others havng this issue?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I ran into the same problem but I found out a solution for my early 2011 15-inch MBP.
Basically, with the 8.1 upgrade, the OS mistook my graphics card for another. More specifically, it saw my Radeon HD6490M as one from the 7400M series.
What I did to solve my problem was go to the Device manager, find my graphics card, right-click to get to the 'Properties' panel, and revert to the previous driver (the option should be available). Thanks to this, it reverted to the driver that was used when I was running Windows 8, and my external monitor is working great now.
I hope this will help you!

  • Help with external displays

Just installed Lion and afterward I noticed that things work differently with external displays. In the past I could have my laptop open to mirror but now it must be  shut and the mirrior button or selection isn't available within the display preferences. So my question is, 1. does any one know how to better manage displays? and 2. does anyone know how to mirror while having the laptop screen open?
I know trhis sounds petty but where I work it is very hot and it seems like with the screen shut the computer syncs heat away a lot less efficiently.
    Thanks

    Thanks,
I now know how to turn on and off mirrioring with command/F1 (didn't know that yet), but would you know how I can use my external display in mirror mode with the laptop display completely turned off, not dimmed till black, but off?
Before lion I was able to do this by shutting the laptop screen which would put the machine  into sleep mode and then  by clicking the mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard it would wake it. Once the external display came on then I would open the laptop and the laptop display would remain off while using the external display. Hope that makes sense. Any suggestions?

  • Can no longer use an external display in closed clamshell mode

    Hi,
I have this weird problem that just started couple days ago.
I own a MacBook Pro Early 2011 since March.
It's always hooked up to an external display and the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off (closed clamshell mode).
Lately, if the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off, the external display won't show anything.
But as soon as I open the lid, the external display will then mirror the MacBook Pro LCD.
If I close back the lid, the external display will get blank.
I also tried to change the display settings with no luck.
In other words, I can no longer use my external display with the MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode.
I'm wondering if someone experienced this problem before.  Thanks for help.

    Hello sebastieng
Open both, your MBP connected to the external screen. Open Preferences click here on "Displays" and then make the external Window to the main window by dragging the bar (line?) on top of the laptop window to the external window, which makes the second window the main window.
If this does not help you may read this:

  • MacBook will not display on external monitor in clamshell mode

    System information:
    13 in. MacBook (2.4Ghz Intel 2-Core)
    10.6.7
External Display connected with Apple DisplayPort VGA adapter
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
Generic wireless mouse that connects to a USB stick plugged into the MacBook
This is dirving me nuts because it was working perfectly until about 2 weeks ago. I was following the pocess outlined here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
    Here is what happens now:
MacBook display and external monitor are in mirroring mode. All devices are powered on and plugged in.
Close MacBook lid. MacBook goes to sleep. Blinking LED.
Hit spacebar on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard. The LED changes to steady on. However, the external display never shows the desktop. I've tried Command-F1... nothing.
If I open the lid again... the MacBook goes back to sleep.
I then have to pull out the DisplayPort VGA adapter to wake the MacBook up again.

You could try resetting the SMC and see if that helps.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid-2012 won't boot in clamshell mode with an external display attached

I have a 15" MBPr mid-2012 running OS X 10.10.1. The system won't boot in clamshell mode (power is connected, lid shut) with an external display attached via an Apple Thunderbolt->DVI adapter. it boots fine if the lid is open. It isn't the adapter or the display since my 15" MBPr mid-2014 boots up just fine connected to the same adapter and monitor. And this system used to boot like this just fine some while ago (probably before it was upgraded to Yosemite). I've reset the NVRAM (twice) to no avail.
Has anyone encounter this? Anyone have a solution? Should I try an SMC reset (always a bit nervous about that)? Might it be a driver issue in Yosemite?
    Thanks.

  • HT3382 With a MacbookAir (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port, can you configure the external monitor to FULLY display in portrait mode yet keep the built-in display in landscape mode?

With an 11"-inch Macbook Air (mid-2012) using a mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter plugged into the Thunderbolt port:
Can you configure an extended desktop with an external monitor (20") displaying full portrait mode (1200 x 1600 resolution) and keep the built-in display in landscape?
I'd like to see something like

Yes, I can't see why not.
Just give it a try and report back if you have a problem.

  • External display - maximum resolution only works in safe mode on MBP

I'm having an issue with an external display connected to a 2012 non-retina MacbookPro 15" i7 running 10.9.  Monitor is Dell U2713HM, which has a maximum resolution of 2560x1440, and is connected via a Mini-Dipslayport to Displayport cord.
My setup has been working great for over a year, where while at my office I use the macbook closed in "clamshell mode" with the Dell monitor being the only display in use, running at 2560x1440.  However today when I came into my office and connected to the dispay as usual, the resolution on the Dell was noticably scaled.  System preferences is showing it running Scaled at 1080p, and when I select Best for Display it stretches to a very wide and distorted resolution.  I can hold alt and click the Scaled button to display additional resolutions, however the maximum resolution listed is 1600x1200.  Same problem regardless of clamshell, mirror, or extended desktop modes.
I've been trying to track down the problem, and have run though the usual procedures: restart, shutdown, reset PRAM, reset SMC, check cord connections, verify disk, repair disk permissions - all to no avail.  However when I boot in safe mode the display runs as it should at 2560x1440 without issue, which lets me know its not a problem with the cord or connectioin, but rather something on the OS / GPU side.
I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing the issue.  Considering its been working fine for quite some time, and I've made no unusual changes to the MBP in the past 48 hours when the display was working properly, I'm not really sure where to go from here.   Hoping to not have to migrate to a new user or repartion my HDD.
    Any suggestions on possible solutions?
    Thanks.

I stumbled upon a fix.  Still not sure what caused the issue in the first place, but for anyone having the same issue, the display override script contained on the site below seems to have fixed the issue.

  • HT3131 Operating MBP in closed clamshell mode with external display

I have a new MBP retina display.  Trying to operate in a closed clamshell mode.  I connect a USB keyboard and a wireless mouse.  My external display is a Dell 2007FP display screen connected via a VGA adapter.  Whenever I close the computer lid to operate in clamshell mode the screen goes to sleep/power save mode.  Have tried various combinations of attaching keyboard and mouse first then screen, switching computer off on etc.  The external display states there is "no signal coming from computer"...any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciate

Congratulations on taking one more step in becoming more self sufficient in tech stuff.
But I have to wonder why you spent so much on a Retina display only to have it cooking uselessly there.
