External Display + Macbook Pro 13' (2010)

So I got a new external monitor and am currently using it as a primary display.
Unfortunately, the screen keeps blinking and turns off for 2 seconds every now and then. I've tried installing drivers, changing resolution, removing the macbook's power cable, but to no avail. I've looked this up online and saw that it's a common problem, but none of the solutions have helped me.
What's weird is that when I boot it up on Windows 7, there is no flicking at all, but the screen still tends to shut down (for 2 seconds) every 45 minutes or so.
Can anyone pose a possible solution?
For now though, I'm going to try to buy another display port, see if that works...

I used to have a similar problem but i only encountered it when using MAC OSX and on bootcamp as well. Screen goes off and then on again randomly. Sometimes its very brief and sometimes its much longer to the extent that i have to unplug my mini displayport and plug it back in again.
I have since resolved the issue by purchasing the original apple mini displayport to DVI adapter and problems have been solved so far. I can also utilize the full resolution of the monitor in both MAC OSX and bootcamp. The previous adapter i had was a mini displayport to HDMI adapter. With that HDMI adapter, i could not utilize the full resolution of the monitor and randomly goes off and on an also fuzzy images.

Is it possible to connect an external moniter to a MacBook Pro using a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in Windows 7 (professional)? I have tried and tried, when booting, both moniters (both laptop and external) show the "Starting Windows" page, but the external blacks out on the user selection screen. You shouldn't require a driver. I would try booting as usual, then plugging in your external display. In windows, you can hit "command-P" to toggle between your external display options (mirror, extend, etc.). Once you do that, you should see the new display show up.

Two external displays - macbook pro

I Have a macbook pro 13" 2013 It has i firewire and one mini display port. How can I (or what do I need) to connect two external monitors, to function as independent screens thanks

I don’t have a Mac with a Thunderbolt port, so I can’t definitively answer that question. My guess would be that they would not be two mirror copies, but rather treated as two halves of a double-width single desktop, as opposed to two independent desktops. Perhaps someone who currently has a similar desktop could chime in? Or perhaps someone at your nearest Apple store could answer the question with certainty?

Lag with external display macbook pro 13" i5!

Hello everyone! I just bought a brand new 13" macbook pro i5, it works absolutely fantastic. There's only one thing i'm not happy about: If I connect an external monitor to it (both my sharp32" via hdmi and my 19" samsung via VGA) it starts to lag!
Even on my MBP screen! Is this a lion bug? I noticed I'm not the only one who has this problem.
I've got a 4 year old HP notebook which doesn't have aproblem with both monitors and now my brand new expensive Macbook does. Ialready renamed to "AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext" and tried to run itin safe mode but with no results.
Anybody else having the same problem?
Please help me out!

Did you calibrate your monitor in Displays under System Preferences? That could be it, but I'm not sure.
The only bug I had with external monitors when I had Lion on my MBP was that kernel panics happened whenever I went into sleep mode...

Is there a MagSafe 2 compatible portable external power source for the retina display MacBook Pro?

I’m using a retina display MacBook Pro with the MagSafe 2 connection. I would like to have a portable external power source to extend the use of my laptop on long field trips where I am away from power sources. Swapping batteries is not an option for this generation of MacBook Pros. There seem to be many options for PC’s and even iPhones/iPads/iPods but the MagSafe 2 connection seems to be the issue. I saw one link that suggested buying an Apple MagSafe 2 power adapter and performing surgery on the power cord (using components provided by the vendor) so that the adapter would run on their back up battery. I was hoping for a more esthetically pleasing solution. Any suggestions? Does this product exist and I just missed it? Clearly, if a MagSafe(1) compatible external battery existed I could adapt that using the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter.

I wouldn’t recommend using an underpowered AC adapter with your MacBook Pro. It sounds as though the best solution would be to get a different laptop bag with a sufficiently large side pocket.

Thunderbolt Display connection to MacBook Pro Mid 2010

I got a new display 27" and I have to read now that I can't connect this to my MacBook Pro Mid 2010. Older Displays are not sold anymore said the sales person and it is no problem to connect.
I can't beleave what I'm reading in this forum.
Is it true that Apple is not producing any Displays anymore for Persons how have bought their computer 2010?? I'm using Apple for more than 20 years now but that is now just totaly unaccepable.
1. The sales person telling me connection is no problem
2. Apple not producing a screen for "older" Hardware
So please Apple: Find a solution for it. And please folks don't try to tell me it was written online somewhere hidden in the specs. ok?

What you've asked is true. You can buy similar displays from Dell or other manufacturers that will work with your laptop. Many of the Dell's use the same internal LG panels, so quality is similar.

MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Battery Capacity

I've read a few threads about this, mostly about battery capacity rapidly dropping after an install of ML. I installed ML when it first came out, and just noticed the drastic decrease in battery life about 3 weeks ago. My capacity could have potentially been dropping since I installed ML (and I just now noticed it), or it may have just started a couple weeks ago when I noticed. I'm not sure.
Either way, my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) now has a battery life of less than an hour, even with extremely light processor load. I contacted Apple about this, and the tech said that the battery was rated for 1000 cycles. I'm currently at 220, and my battery capacity is a pathetic 30%. He said that since I wasn't under warranty, there was nothing they could do besides replace the battery - which I really want to avoid since I'm a broke college student.
Is there anything I can do here? I understand that I'm not under warranty anymore, and this wouldn't be a problem if my battery was degrading normally. However, getting 1/5th of the recommended battery life is pretty sad. I've read that doing a clean install of Mountain Lion/Lion might help. Is there a way I can do this without having to back up all my files? I don't have an external hard drive or anything.
It seems this is a common topic in these forums. Any help or links to solutions would be great. If this is answered in a similar topic, I'll gladly delete.

However, I have noticed the same problem on my Mid 2012 Retina MBP when I have it plugged into my external display so it may be a software issue as well.

How do I connect my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 to a VGA monitor

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010 that I would like to connect to a VGA LCD monitor. It connects and I get the mac book screen saver but no desktop icons or tool bar. Am I missing a setting?

External screens are designed to work as extended displays for your computer's display. It means that menu bars and desktop icons won't appear, and you will only see windows if you drag them to the right part of the computer's display.

A 2010 MBP does not support Thunderbolt technology so that is not an avenue for you. A Fire wire with one of these adapters should enable you to connect the two devices:

Again I ask for help
macbook pro mid 2010 restarts itself whenever I try to open any program exept safari, and even then when i go to some web pages.
pram has been zapped several times, smc has been reset several times..
was no problem until i installed mavericks, and since then the problem has not gone away,, even tho there have been several re installs of the os. (i.e., snow leopard, (twice) yosetime, mountain lion,(twice))
now *** is going on with this piece a crappy apple product..

Hi, I need some peoples help on fixing my laptop. I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2010 model, and it refuses to boot into either osx or windows. Every time I prevoiusly treid to boot into mac osx I got this error "panic (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)". there is an image below. and when I had treid to boot into windows (bootcamp) I got this error "A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I have treid to restart the computer and gotten both these errors agian. The strange things is this deosn't always happen, sometimes I don't get any errors, and it just has the apple logo whith the spinning loading thing happening below (I left this for an hour and it still kept spinning, and never loaded). Other times it just show white whith no errors but never loads, sometime it lets me alt to select which os to boot into (nether work), but other times it just freezes and shows a mouse cursor on the white background. it's not consistent.
Most recently it has a flashing folder on a white background. I treid inserting my osx disc and went into disc utility but it doesn't detect my hardrive. It may be a faulty hardrive or sata cable but I dont know (I have links below). I was recently (well for the first time), defragmenting my windows partition, it hit temparatures of 80-85C, and stayed at that for several hours throughout the defragmentation, would this have damaged it?
I have scoured the internet and found many people whith very similar problems to me but none whith the same, and A lot of people saying that if you get the error you should just use a time machine backup, the thing is I don't have a time machine backup. The internal hardrive I am currently using on my laptop is a seagate 640gb 5400rpm (it's not an apple harddrive). every thing else it standard, standard ram and no overclocking, I was running 10.6.8 snow leopard, and windows xp profesional 32bit (split 320gb each, whith about 10gb spare on each parttion).
It would be greatly appreiciated If any one could shed some light on what I should do. I need the laptop working whithin the week (for my tafe work), but If I have to reinstall the OS's and programs it could take a long0I have a lot of programs and that could take a month. not to mention The fact that the hardrive might be completly fine and it's just a faulty sata connection. but then would I still be getting an error if thats all thats wrong?. and if it is just the error is there anyway I can fix it whitout doing a fresh install, there a error reading document blow but I cannot make heads or tails of it. I also have almost no money to afford getting it fixed.
also one last thing, I stupitidely inserted my mac osx disc 95% of the way into my macs slot loading drive when it was powered down (off). when I turned it on it sucked it in fine, but would that have caused any damage to the disc or laptop (I cannot eject the disc to check)

The problem may be that your macbook is'nt set to 'mirror image' if you go into settings, onto 'displays' there should be an option within, once youre connected, to 'mirror image' if you check this box, then the problem should be sorted, if not then maybe a dodgy cable or adapter.

My brand new 13 inch retina display macbook pro won't turn on!?

Hello all,
I purchased a 13inch retina display macbook pro from an apple store at around 4pm today and at about 10pm (after I have been doing nothing more than downloading software and surfing the internet off of the power adapter) it randomly shut off as I was reading from my pdf math text book. I assumed it had died so I plugged it in and tried to turn it back on it turned right back on and went to the login screen. I barely had enough time to look and see that my laptop was at 40% power and charging before it shut off again and refused to turn back on. It does not respond in any way to the power button (visual or fans whirring etc.) and I currently have it charging up on my bed. It acknowledges the charger (going from a brief green light to the amber) and I have tried resetting the SMC multiple times by now. When I do so the light turns green for a moment and then returns to amber.
I am beyond furious, school starts tomorrow and I was really hoping my first personal laptop and first mac would come through for me. I hope someone out there can help and restore my faith.

I Have this issue as weLl. I have used my notebook for last 6 months and don't want yo lose the data. I have done SMC reset and it won't make a difference. the notebook has turned into a brick with no signs of turningon, boot, fans etc. what can I do other than take it to apple store? Is there any way to reset battery externally? Definitely not happy with experience.

Click on the Apple and then on about this Mac. In the new window, click on the "version 10.9.2" until you see the serial number displayed.
