External Display/Monitor

I use an iMac G5 and would like to add an additional monitor to view LE data in my studio/noise area while leaving my iMac on my desk a few feet away. Is there a recommended monitor? A gaming monitor with short response time? I'm under the impression that I need a VGA adapter on the iMac end, but the monitors I've considered have a MINI VGA input, which is already on the Mac; plus I can't seem to find mini VGA to mini VGA cable. Obviously I 'm missing something. Also, is it cool that the monitor be capable of higher resolution than my Mac? What's going on?

Seriously. One iMac. Two screens. 40". Yum. I'm using the DVI input on my second screen (a ViewSonic somethingorother) and the miniDVI - DVI adaptor on the iMac side.
Now, to be fair, I'm still waiting for my Logic 7.2 update -- so it's remotely possible (though very unlikely) that Logic will be the only app to NOT work on dual displays. Everything -- absolutely everything -- else works like a charm.
The visual effect of hitting F9 on a dual-display configuration is absolutely stunning.
One other caveat: I did max out my graphics card, getting the 256mB Radeon card.
According to the System Profiler...
My Mac knows what the ViewSonic is, even though I didn't tell it anything (it's the VX2025wm (20" widescreen). Both screens are running at the same resolution (1680*1050), partly because that's the native resolution for them both, but also because I suspect that anything is going to be visually jarring. Both running 32 bit color, Core Image, Quartz Extreme. The VX actually lets me rotate it through 90-degree increments, though I'm not sure I see any immediate use for this feature.
I narrowly chose the 20" iMac over the MacPro on cost issues. I put together my 20" iMac w/ 1gb RAM and a 500gb HD AND the second 20" display for less than the cost of a Mac Pro WITHOUT a monitor. Until I really need the expandability and horsepower of the Pro, the iMac remains an excellent value. Need more power? Get a Mini and upgrade to Logic Pro so that you can offload processing power to the Mini.

The PowerBooks have an F-key that toggles mirrored and extended mode. My PB is loaned out right now but I think it was f7. The keycap has an icon on two overlapping rectangles, as I recall.

Requires additional hardware - the Matrox DualHead2Go. For the late 2006, you'd need the DualHead2Go Digital Edition, and for the unibody you'd need the DualHead2Go DP Edition, with appropriate cabling (and a DVI-to-VGA adapter for the late 2006 MBP).

Is there a way to use a non-apple external display (monitor) without having my macbook air plugged in?

Just got a 27'' AOC monitor that I'm using with my Macbook Air (purchased in 2013). It's working great but as soon as I unplug the power adapter from my laptop the monitor goes black and says 'no signal'. I've been reading online that you need to have the power adapter plugged in to use an external monitor - my questions are: 1) does that harm the laptop's batter? if so, 2) is there a workaround? if there is no workaround, 3) does an Apple monitor also require that a laptop be plugged in for the external display to continue functioning while the laptop is in clamshell mode (closed lid)?

Thanks, Matt. In my case, the monitor definitely shuts off when I unplug the power from my laptop in clamshell mode. If the lid is open, however, the monitor continues to function even without the power adapter plugged into my laptop. Ideally, I'd like to have the lid closed on my laptop and be able to use the external monitor without having the power plugged into my laptop. That's what doesn't seem to work - if your does, please let me know if you have any pointers.

G580 External display monitor

Hi Lenovo community,
My sister's G580 laptop computer have malfunctioned display screen, also not booting and showing green-pink lines.
We are not looking for replacement and repairing of the screen(as warranty is off) and she already have new laptop but I am thinking if is possible to use as computer connected on external monitor throught HDMI or display port provided on laptop without functioning the main laptop display?

Hi!
Yes it would work as long as it is the only external display connected to the system.
Try Pressing F2 When you Power On the computer to boot into BIOS.
If still Not working, It is possible that the computer might be having boot/Post Issue.
Try Draining the Power by doing a Power Drain,
REmove the AC and Battery
Hold the Power Button down for at least 15 sec
Reconnect everything including the HDI or the VGA alone then check.
You can also try reseating the Memory

Settings for an external display monitor

I'm working with FCP 7 but my screen is small 13.3 and for a person of my age (60) is a litle difficult to work. I would like an external monitor display but I cant afford to buy the Apple 24" display, so I'm looking for an other alternative. I found Viewsonic VX2260WM full HD 22"screen very affordable or maybe Samsung XL2370 23" screen. So I need now some help to setup all the system. I would like to have the possibility to have FCP work space in the big monitor but the preview in my MCP. Please, dear adviser, take in mind, for my age, that I need all the explanation full detailed.

Thanks Jerry for your advice. I have had for a week a 22" ViewSonic connected with a HDMI Mini Display port adapter. I tried to do my best for the setup of this monitor with 1080p resolution while the MBP 13" was setup to the native resolution 1280X800 but the image at the external display was not good enough as the MBP screen. In any case I have return the ViewSonic because other problems. I'm now looking for an other monitor but I'm not sure what to look for. I need for a bigger work space for Final Cut but with a good quality image. Do you have any advice?

TV out only works for specifiv apps. The Video app is one. What were you trying?

Cannot resume external display/monitor after sleep

Hi,
I am using the latest MBPr with yosemite OS. I connect to second display using the thunderbolt to VGA adapter. After returning from sleep stage, the external monitor will not display anything. It just say no signal from my MBPr. I need to disconnect the cable and reconnect it back to have the signal back normal. This never happen in maverick.
Pls help.

External display monitor suddenly is not working; power is on

My LG external monitor display suddenly is not working today. It powers on, and it says "analog power saving mode", and it is detected by my ibook G4. When I go to preferences, and show displays, it shows that two displays are active, my laptop "Color LCD" and my external, "L1932Tq". If the external is plugged in, it indicates that that is the system in use, though the external monitor is black and unresponding (except for power light which is on). I replaced all cords - the power cord and the mini VGA cord and it's connecting cord to the monitor, and there are no changes.
Is this monitor just suddenly broken, perhaps through it's internal connection devices??

Issue is solved. It was Program Error from SAP side.
Now All the buttons are working fine and I am able to print PDF also.
Solution is implement the note 2031585 - SAP NWBC ABAP Runtime Patch 40.
System Details : ECC 6.0 NetWeiver 7.4 ,
EHP 7 , SP-Level 06

My led and external display flicker a lot. What to do?

I have a late 2011 MacBook or 15". My MacBook screen/display flickers excessively making the mac completely unusable. I am not sure if flickering is the right term. Some times it flickers and some times turns turs completely blue or black with white horizontal lines on it. This happens once a week and I have to reboot more than 20 times to get this solved.
Same thing happens to my external display monitor which is connected via thunderbolt cable. So this makes it clear that the LED of my Mac is not damaged. I have searched a lot on the forums but couldn't find a solution. If somebody could help me I shall be grateful.

The dock indicator lights look fairly dim on the MBA display, but bright on external displays (LCD TVs for example). Any fixes?

As stated in the title, I've noticed the indicator lights on the dock which represent an open/running application looking fairly dim as opposed to the previous dock design in Lion. After a little look around on the internet, there are some others who are having a similar issue, but I've noticed that upon connecting the laptop to external displays (monitors and LCD TVs), they look extremely bright and noticeable on that particular screen.

I'm considering locating the image files used to display the dock indicators and photoshopping them to be brighter.

Display/Monitor Recommendations Needed

I'm getting ready to get a 13 inch MacBook Pro to replace my early 2009 iMac.
I intend to use it with an external display/monitor and am looking for suggestions that will not break the bank. The Apple dislays are a bit too pricey for me.
I'm looking for something around 24" or 27" and welcome any suggestions
I also have a question, I was at Costco and saw the prices of smaller HD TVs. Wouid it be too goofy an idea to use a TV as a display/monitor?

After Lion Upgrade, External Display ( DVI ) Not detecting Monitor.

This problem is on my Macbook Pro 17" 2006 (ish) intel core 2 duo.
I have allways used the display port with a DVI cable connected to a DVI port on an external monitor to extend my desktop.
For some reason after upgrading to Lion, I can't detect the external display. If I use an adapter ( Display connector to VGA ) and connect into the VGA input on the monitor, all works fine.
I did connect to the DVI port and left it connected for about an hour, then clicked the " Detect Displays " button, and it worked once. But after this it hasn't worked again.
I have changed the cable, and even the monitor, but it just won't detect..
Any Ideas ??

After ugrading to LION i can't use an external monitor or TV-screen.
Just purchased a Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter to connect my 13" macbook to an HDTV. I plugged the mini display to hdmi adapter into my macbook and then connected an hdmi cable from the adapter to the tv. the macbook display briefly went blue but then display the normal screen again.
I've search for the past few hours with no luck. I've tried to manually detect the display and nothing. I've tried 2 different TV's and both have the same result. I've tried rebooting my macbook also with no luck. Am I missing something? If I go into System Preferences > Displays there is no mirroring options or anything like that. It just shows the "Color LCD" option. Like I said, upon clicking the "Detect Display" button, nothing changes and no additional display are detected for use.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

External vga, monitor recognized, still no display

I have a L R60 9461-DXG, with Win7 (32bit) running very fine.
Now trying to use an external monitor (L171p) but nothing works.
While in boot and in combination with Fn+F7 the display doesn't come up (staying in power saving mode).
In Win7 the external connected monitor is recognized and displayed as a L171p, enabling the monitor is possible but again the display doesn't come up.
Is this a driver error or could there be a hardware malfunction?
Installing (Vista) Ati Mobility Radeon X1400 drivers from the L site didn't solve the problem.
Please help.

Not necessarily, but the probability of receiving a solution from other members, who are also using a similar setup, is most likely better here.
