External display's fonts are awful

Fonts look awful (blurry, hazy and jagged) on my external Dell U2412M monitor ever since I upgraded to Yosemite. Everything was dandy in Mavericks but now it's just awful. Is anyone currently facing similar issues? I have tried mirroring the display, turning off font smoothing, making sure the display is running in resolution that is best for the display - tried all sorts including turning the font smoothing down by changing AppleFontSmoothing value. Nothing helps.
Not only that it seems whatever resolution you choose when the OS boots up for the very first time it defaults to 1440x900 resolution. Is that normal? It's fine Once you login and logout...
Cheers...

Isn't just incredible. Of late I am questioning the entire apple ecosystem. Their quality assurance aspects have taken a nose dive. Have you tried to preview an image by hitting the space bar? Seen the jittery animation? Noticed how mission control animations struggle on anything other than 1440x900 due non integer based interpolation they need to do for downscaling and upscaling... it's all just shocking... there was a time when people came into OS X because things just worked. It cannot be further from the truth. I run Linux everywhere and would not have bothered with OS X if it wasn't for Lightroom. I am pretty much waiting and hoping that 10.10.1 will address majority of these issues. If it doesn't this MacBook Pro is going straight on eBay! Goodbye Apple forever.... I just cannot imagine that on a top of the range hardware there will be so many issues because of the hideous software it runs! I don't care about 'Continuity'  - just get the basics right...
Could not have said it better myself.
Apple doesn't appear to be focusing on the desktop side as much. There are a lot of issues on the desktop side. But, then again, Apple is going for the lowest common denominator. It's supposed to be easy, and hard to shoot yourself in the foot with.  The downside is Apple has taken away our freedom. Apple has made its computers not work with non-Apple hardware; locking you in the Apple ecosystem.
If you want to tinker you have to go to homebrew or start installing from source, overwriting paths, and going through dependency ****.
The plus side, is, it's still hard to shoot yourself in the foot. I just updated my ubuntu server's XML parsing library, overwriting the standard libxml parser and now I can't update my ubuntu server. Oh well, i won't make that mistake again.
But, at least with Apple I was shielded, I learned a whole lot about the underlying system, and have a system that works the way I want it to. I can still upgrade to the latest release, and, the web cam works as does the wifi. I have a dual booted windows/ubuntu laptop which the webcam works on neither OS, nor does the SD card reader.

I am running Mac OS 10.4.3 on my G4 Powerbook, system spec as follows

When the Powerbook is woken from sleep mode the airport crashes when using an external display. I have no idea why this is, but it seems from other threads, that the external display and airport are closely tied together, and I have also read that there are others who are experiencing some problems with the Airport. When this happens, I have to hard boot the machine as I can't forcequit or shut down the system from the menubar (this crashes too)
I have the following installed for my airport

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

  • Macbook crashes with external displays, Macbook crashes with external displays

    Dear Community,
I have a problem with my new (Dec. 2013) Macbook Pro. Everything worked fine until two weeks ago. Then, I connected my Macbook via VGA-adapter (original) with an LCD Monitor at home (I had done this before without any problems). My Mac froze and nothing happened, so I had to reboot it manually (press the on/off button 5 seconds). The Macbook would show a grey display und would not reboot, no matter what I tried. The secure boot program did not work, either. I could start it with disk utility and load my last time machine backup.
After I did this, everything worked fine again. Last week I tried to connect my Mac with another LCD display at work (which had also worked fine before). Same error! Mac froze and nothing worked and I had to load a backup again.
I brought my Mac to the next Apple store, where a hardware check revealed no defects.
Nonetheless, they exchanged the logic board and told me everything was fine, again.
Today, I have worked the whole day using my external display at work. Everything was ok, but I could only use the external display and not the Notebook display. When I tried to sync the two monitors to work with the Mac and the external display together – same error!
I have called the Apple store, but they had no idea and just told me that the Apple warranty does not cover third-party displays. The Apple hotline suggested looking for a driver for the external displays, but there are none. And again: Until two weeks ago, everything worked without problems.
Has anybody an idea what to do with this?
    Julia

I was searching and found that the Matrox DualHead2Go maybe work. Any idea?
    Thanks

  • HDCP issue, NO EXTERNAL DISPLAY!

Today I went into my itunes (on my Macbook Pro) and attempted to watch a movie that I bought several months ago and have watched multiple times with no issue.  However it wouldn't play and a window popped up saying that the movie could not be displayed as I needed a device that was HDCP compatible.  I tried to watch something else, this time a tv show that I've watched on my Mac before, and the same message popped up.  I am NOT using an external display, and these are not newly purchased movies/tv shows.  Every single TV how and movie in my itunes library, even the ones that I did not purchase in HD have this message pop up when I attempt to play them.  All these are videos that have worked on my Mac before, one of them even yesterday.  Help?!

You may want to ask this in the iTunes forum in case they have any perspective on this.

I have posted this annoying Robles to bugreport.apple.com. Hope I can get locution (although Apple normally will not respond):
On a software name Appfresh, it alerted me to update my MBPr 15 inches running latest OSX 10.8.2, with Chinese Word List Update 1.2. When I clicked on Software Pdate, app Store return No update available.
My system have Chinese Word List Update 1.0 installed, and on October 5, 2012, Chinese Word List Update 1.1 was released by Apple, as alerted through AppFresh. However, this update never get updated on m system. I have to manually download chinesewordlistupdate.pkg from reviews.cnet.com/macfixit and install it manually. By doing so, I have Chinese Word List Update 1.1 on my system.
The same problem occurred again today on November 5, 2012, where Chinese Word List Update is released by Apple. again, it fail to update from Software Update menu.
    Can you please:
    1. Explain why this problem occurred. This is so annoying.
    2. Advise me how can I get this Chinese Word List Date to update to version 1.2. Can you please send me the chinesewordlistupdate.pkg for version 1,2 so that I can manually install it on my system?
    3. How can I prevent similar problem with he subsequent version?
Why Apple don't make this update standard as other update?
Support please. Thank for response in advance

  • Scaling fonts on non-retina external display?

    Hi,
I am using an external display Asus PB278Q on my MBP Retina 15" Late 2013, at resolution 2560x1440 on Yosemite. So far so good.
Unfortunately font and icon sizes are really small in this resolution, so I would like to scale them up to increase readability. However the resolution should stay as is. For retina displays, you can scale fonts nicely under system settings -> displays -> Scale (see here for screenshot: http://cdn-static.zdnet.com/i/story/70/00/007009/rmbp13-displays-system-preferen ce.png). For my non-retina display this option is not available it seems.
Is there any way to still scale fonts consistently on this external display to increase readability?
    Thanks!

I've been having this same issue for a few months now, and even after the latest EFI update. BUT... This morning is the first time my Macbook Pro awaked from a long nap displaying the correct resolution and properties.
    What did I do?
When waking from sleep yesterday, the macbook again was in the wrong resolution. I went to display properties and clicked the arrangement tab. I moved the menu bar to my Macbook display and turned off mirroring. (I do use an external display at times so my menu bar was moved to the alternate display when connected).
This morning after over 20 hours sleeping the macbook woke up fresh with all its beauty sleep in tact. This is only one long sleep so its no real fix just yet, but may be a clue where this bug lies.

  • The fonts are not displaying correctly

When I open a text box and type all of the fonts are all basically the same.  They donot display correctly.  I uninstalled and re-installed photoshop elements 11 and they still do not work.

    Hi,
Have you tried resetting the Type tool?
    Click on the icon ...
...... select Reset Tool from the drop down list.
If that doesn't work, please let know which operating system you are running on.

  • Using two external displays that are NOT mirrored

i have a MBP early 2008, meaning the external display port is a dual DVI-I port. I have have two external displays, both samsung syncmaster xl2370 with native resolution 1920x1080. i have a dual dvi-i to vga splitter. when i connect both displays, they mirror one another, which is not what i want. rather, i want to have my MBP display, and two external displays that are not mirror images of one another. according to apple, if i buy a dual dvi-i to dvi splitter, i get the same effect. i've read on various forums about hardware alternatives, like buying a usb to dvi or usb to vga adapter, with some reasonable results (except a bit of sluggishness). the best one seems to be the diamond: http://www.diamondmm.com/BVU195.php
it mostly gets good reviews, but is sluggish. does any know of any better options?
    many thanks, jovo

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
USB is slow partly because it is processor and driver dependent. Best to go with a straight video solution, such as Matroxes products like this one: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/

  • Fontnames partly displayed in Japanese - Fonts are not broken...

I'm having a rather odd issue recently, when I was talking to my customer he needed some changes in Text. I had used the font PilGi, which comes to us from Apple with OS X. Unfortunately the font was now dislplayed as: 필기체 in Illustrator. The font is still working, and I can type new characters and so on, but my fontnames are quite unusable now.
Here are the steps, I tried to come over this problem:
    1. Repair file permissions: Volume had to be repaired with the System-DVD. Repair Sucess (Volume and Permissions.)
    2. Clear font-caches using Onyx.(All: System, Application...)
    3. Restore System-Fonts
    4. Reset Systemcache
    5. Clear the Font Folder from /Library/Fonts
    6. Clear the Font Folder from ~/Library/Fonts
    7. Reinstall OS X
    8. Reinstall all missing updates
    9. Called up a friend and had the font E-Mailed to me.
I'm rather confused and helpless. I don't want to import my backuped stuff manually to find out, what was causing the problem...
    Any help?

    Hi,
Adobe changed the way fonts are displayed in photoshop cc 2014.
Now instead of just showing the font family, all the font styles within the family are displayed as well.

  • [Cp6] Fonts are not displayed "real size"

    Hello,
We're trying to get a consistant look of our productions through various software used and we just discovered that Captivate fonts are displayed smaller than in Word or software from the competition.
I fear this has something to do with the screen "DPI" the software estimates (72dpi or 96dpi).
Here you can see the result in Word, Captivate, Flash and Photoshop :
Any advice or tip about this ?
    Thanks.
    PJ

I know exactly what you mean, I've been in the print before .
It's true that in the Adobe products, especially Photoshop, 100% means 1 pixel from image is 1 pixel on screen. Same for Flash, less for Illustrator, vector based and working with document size in cms or inches.
But, as long as font size is in points, not in pixels, there has to be a link between pixels and actual screen size.
Here's what I found so far : Office applications rely on screen resolution given by the operating system (Display control panel), which is 96dpi for me, and is correct.
Adobe applications seem to default to 72dpi. You can alter this in Photoshop ( Preferences > Units and Rulers, and Screen resolution).
Here's the comparision between 96 and 72 dpi documents in Photoshop (each rectangle is a different document) :
Plus, Photoshop automatically converted Myriad 39 to Myriad 52 when copy/pasting from the 96 dpi document to the 72 one !
I can't find the equivalent setting in Captivate, so we'll have to maintain two lists of font sizes to get a consistent look.

  • External display font size

I guess this is a request for the next software update - please enable users to enlarge the font size/screen layout for the messaging previews that appear on the external screen.  It is very hard to read as is.
    Thanks!

I'll second that!  Can't believe BB loaded a gazillion fonts and sizes for the interior display but no way to apply them to the external display too.  What were y'all thinking?

  • Blurry/fuzzy fonts on external display (Dell 2209WA)

Hi, I recently bought a Dell 2209WA and I'm not too happy with how the fonts are displayed on it. All the fonts seems blurry/fuzzy/jagged.
I have tried to change the sharpness of the display as well as the font smoothing style(I get best results on Medium) in OSX. It gets a little bit better with these settings than with the defaults but far from good.
I'm running the display on a black MacBook through DVI, native resolution 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz.
    Anybody else with this problem?

I'm not sure if my problem is related, but I'm also connecting my MacBook to a Dell LCD panel via the mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter and I'm getting weird on-screen artifacts and intermittent flickering.
There's a known problem if you're using the mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter and Apple has provided a firmware update to fix the problem. If you're using that (and connecting to your Dell monitor via an additional VGA-to-DVI dongle, then you might want to grab the update.
But as far as I know, there doesn't seem to be a solution for the DVI adapter.

  • ITunes 10.1.6.7 update has broken my foreign font display - Asian characters are now squares. How do I fix this?

The iTunes 10.1.6.7 update has broken my foreign font display - Asian characters are now squares.
They are fine on my iPhone, copying to other documents & through the Last FM scrobbler, yet iTunes shows songs incorrectly. I've fiddled with the ID3/Unicode settings - nothing changes.
For example: iTunes shows a bunch of squares, yet when I copy and paste them here it becomes ~  일렉트로보이즈
This was not a problem earlier - everything was fine in the four years or so I've used iTunes until, I believe, this update. If it was not the update, I'm not sure what else it could be?
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thank you!

Thank you so much! I vigorously searched around these parts and the general internet before posting and found nothing - it's so simple, too
Hahaha, turns out it was Windows, not iTunes, that broke my font
