  • Connection to external display does not work under windows bootcamp, with a thunderbolt to vga adapter.

Hello guys, after searching a lot in the forum for an answer to this, I could not find a solution so this is the reason for this post.
I have a Macbook Pro (early 2011 I think) running MacOSX Lion and I have installed Windows 7 64-bit through bootcamp (version 4.0).
Everything works fine except that I cannot connect my external display through my thunderbolt-vga adapter.
The external monitor shows only the boot screen of windows (the one with the windows logo) and then, when I get into the login page it goes blank.
After reading the forum, I have done several things in order to fix this problem such as:
Restarting the macbook with the thunderbolt device connected to it.
Updated to the latest ATI drivers through bootcamp.
Removed the graphics driver and re-install it again.
I have tried to identify the external monitor through windows 'screen resolution' tool (attached photo).
    but still no luck.
Does anyone have any idea on what else I could do in order to fix this? By the way, I find it very frustrating that Apple does not have a stable solution to the problem with devices that are connected to the thunderbolt port.
    Thank you in advance

and here is the attached screenshot

  • How to Force mac Thunderbolt External Display with Integrated GPU for Macbook Pro 2012?

I have been getting GPU Panic whenever I use external Thunderbolt Display.
Not sure whether this is software after(Mavericks) or hardware, if anybody could shed some light I would appreciate it.
The Current Discrete GPU will only work for few seconds 10 sec max before it became blank and require you to force shutdown. This also happened even without external display Blank and GPU Panic upon restart. So I suspected either the discrete GPU failure or software in Mavericks.
But at the moment I'm looking for workaround so I can use the intel intergrated GPU to use my Mac Thunderbolt External Display.
Thank you in advance for any input.

  • Lion and Multi-Display (2 external monitors + built-in Display) [Thunderbolt, USB adapters/eVGA UV+]

    Hi everyone,
I just completed an upgrade to Lion and while I love it I've suddenly found myself short 1 display. I use 2x24" with my MacBook Pro - 1 via mini Display Port [the Thunderbolt port] and another via an eVGA UV+ [both displays have a resolution of 1920x1080].
There are two things that I am wondering about:
Has anyone else who's upgraded found their UV+ adapter to be useless all of the sudden? I'm contacting eVGA to find out how soon we can expect a functional OSX 10.7 Lion driver for that but in the meantime...
Has anyone heard anything of a Thunderbolt splitter "adapter" - it is obvious that you can have 2 displays chained to a MacBook Pro, as long as both of these displays are of the Thunderbolt Cinema Display variety ... seeing as I don't have two grand and already own 2 smaller monitors that I'd been using with Snow Leopard for quite some time now I was curious if there's just a way to ditch the USB adapter and just have the Thunderbolt port on my 2011 MBP drive both displays (I am fully aware that the GPU is capable of it but have yet to find a hardware display port or thunderbolt cable that splits in 2 so I can just hook each display into it and call it a day).
Thank in advance to anyone and everyone who provides any information related to that stuff as I'd greatly appreciate your help ... once you're used to the extra screen real estate going down from 3 screens to 2 can be pretty painful.
On that same note a general observation about Lion is that while I love full-screen apps I'll barely ever use them whenever I have external displays hooked up as Lion seems to insist on making the full screen app go to the primary display while completely blocking off the secondary display (rendering it useless). Hoping that Apple will make the UX for mulit-display folks nicer someday, I know their focus was just to release Lion now but there's absolutely room for improvement as far as that goes.
Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who responds to this post!

Turns out that's not truly the case - see http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/16/apple-thunderbolt-display-with-multiple-moni tors/ for details but the short of it is that if you just get one and plug in a Display Port Monitor you won't get that extra screen real estate after all.
Yes... the actual marketing 'statement' says you are unable to connect the mDP display "directly" to the back of the new TB display.  Yes...
But... from what i hear...  if you have some other TB display "directly" connected to the downstream of the TB display, you can 'then' add your older mDP display to the chain at that point.  You just can't have the older mDP directly to the new TB display.
And this still stands true if you read previous info from Apple website.  It's all about the wording...
So basically, you should still be able to have your MBPro + New TB display + (some other TB device w/ 2 ports) + old mDP display.

  • Windows 7 Bootcamp and Thunderbolt to VGA Adapters for External Displays MacBook Pro i5?

Is it possible to connect an external moniter to a MacBook Pro using a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in Windows 7 (professional)? I have tried and tried, when booting, both moniters (both laptop and external) show the "Starting Windows" page, but the external blacks out on the user selection screen. That gives me hope... is there a driver out there that will let me use the external display in Windows 7?
    MacBook Pro
    i5, 4gig, 750gig.
    Windows 7 Pro
    Mac OSX Lion
    LG Flatron Wide
DisplayPort to VGA adapter (not apple brand, purchased on eBay).
    Thanks.

You shouldn't require a driver.  I would try booting as usual, then plugging in your external display.  In windows, you can hit "command-P" to toggle between your external display options (mirror, extend, etc.).  Once you do that, you should see the new display show up.

  • Can I use my macbook pro mid 2012 as an external display using thunderbolt port

    Hi,
I want to use my macbook pro (mid 2012) screen as an external display for a raspberry pi using a HDMI to Thunderbolt cable, via the thunderbolt port on the macbook pro. Would this be possible? Can the macbook pro's thunder bolt port act as an input and is any additional software required?
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You are referring to Target Display mode. Target Display mode can only be used in 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt, not MacBooks Pro > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Unfortunately, you can't use the MacBook Pro as a display. It doesn't support the monitor mode

  • External Display No Longer Working (Air & Thunderbolt)

My MacBook Air just decided it no longer wants to work with my external Dell U2711 display via Thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable. Frustrating as this has been working for the past 3 years. Currently running OS X 10.10.2. Have tried PRAM and SMC resets to no avail. Not sure what is going wrong, but looking at the error log it is obviously trying to set it to the wrong resolution "1440 x 900". Previously everything was working great with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Thoughts?

    Howdy Haknat,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
If you're still seeing no image on the external display after resetting the SMC and PRAM, then the next step I'd like you to do is to start the device in Safe Mode.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
If you tried all of these steps for your display and the video issues persist, contact Apple technical support or take your Apple computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • Can I run an external display off the new LaCie 2Big Thunderbolt.

I currently run FCP 7 on a brand new MacBook Pro. I use the Thunderbolt port into a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter (third party) to run an external Asis 27" display. It all works quite well. But...
Right now I use a LaCie d2 Firewire 800 external HD as my scratch but would like to upgrade to the new LaCie 2Big Thunderbolt. I want to then run my external display (still using the adapter) off the second Thunderbolt port on the 2Big. Is this possible? My local Apple authorized store was very sceptical although they had never tested it, in fact, they haven't even sold a 2Big yet.
Has anyone done this? Am I going in the right direction. I don't want to pop for the 2Big (+$500) and find out the setup can't be done.
    Thanks

Yes, I've demo'd this a lot.  Thunderbolt out of a computer, to the drive, looped to a monitor.  AND!!  Thunderbolt to an AJA IoXT for broadcast monitoring, back out to the drive, then the drive to a computer display.
Boggles the mind, but it works

  • Help: 2011 imac 27" won't detect External Display connected via thunderbolt to HDMI

I have an 2011 imac 27" and I'm trying to connect an Acer 23" monitor as an external display. I'm using a miniDV(thunderbolt) to hdmi cable. For some reason the computer is unable to detect the display. However when I reboot into windows via bootcamp, the display is detected and works perfectly.. Any way to force thunderbolt to detect this?

Well, weird outcome... I took the monitor back and exchanged it for a better model, better brand. The thunderbolt to hdmi cable works fine with this new monitor in osx. Thanks again..

  • Thunderbolt problem connected to external display

2011 mbp 2.3ghz 15" while connected to a external display the screen goes wacko. When i disconnect the external display it works fine but i do computer aided engineering and cad and need a bigger screen so this is annoying. It's connected to a 23" lg led display via mini displayport/dvi adapter.
It happens while in Windows7 bootcamp and in lion 10.7
I tried to install the thunderbolt firmware update but it says it doesn't need it.
    Is this a common problem?

    Alright then try the following:

  • Maximum Thunderbolt/VGA resolution for external displays?

    Hi there
Until recently, I've been using a Macbook Air Core 2 Duo with a MiniDisplayPort output. This is connected via the Apple MiniDisplayPort > VGA adaptor to an LG Flatron W2246 22" display, and running 1920x1080 quite happily.
I recently bought the Macbook Pro 15" quad core i7 with the Intel HD 3000 and AMD Radeon 6490M - a much more powerful machine with a much more powerful graphics card.
However, it only seems to allow me a maximum resolution of 1600x1200 on the Thunderbolt external display port - it won't give me an option for 1080p.
Any ideas? It seems strange that the Macbook Air will give me higher resultions!
    Thanks

I had similar issues to Jason with the technical documentation. It was clear on the maximum resolutions for the laptop's screen and the max resolution on an external monitor, and the max for single and dual link DVI on the adapter pages, but vague on VGA.
I suspected it should work since I have a PC laptop with a graphics card that is a generation behind that can do the full res of my monitor over VGA, but thank you BSteely for confirming this.

  • No external display through thunderbolt on 10.6.8

Ok so I have a 2011 MacBook Pro (8,2) and I use a mini displayport to HDMI adapter to connect to my tv or external monitor. It used to work fine (a few months ago) but now it doesn't do anything when I plug it in, but when I pull it out the screen flashes blue for a second. This is all under 10.6.8. I triple boot this machine and under 10.7 and Windows 7 the external display works fine. It also works fine with a 2009 MBP 5,5 that is running 10.6.8. The only difference I see is that the 09 MBP is actually mini displayport whereas the newer has thunderbolt and under 10.7 there was an EFI update and I think a thunderbolt update that wasn't offered under 10.6. My question is can I somehow get the external working under 10.6 with a software tweak/fix?

Thanks - this thread does address the MPEG problem but I still have no sound whatsoever on any program or the system. If I try to preview a music file in the finder with no other program open there is no sound as it won't play. iTunes just crashes when opening with this error:

  • Thunderbolt - Using the macbook as an external display

Hey, just wondering if Im able to use my macbook as an external display for my imac instead of my imac being used as an external display for my macbook? Im using thunderbolt to connect them.
    Cheers

No. Only iMacs currently support that via Target Display Mode. You can use a utility such as ScreenRecycler or a VPN utiility to display the screen via the USB port, but it will be quite slow. You can also use Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
