External Display will not turn back on after sleep

Just bought a new MBP last week and gave my wife the MB. I typically attach to an external 24" display and run in closed clamshell mode. I have been doing it for quite some time with no issues. Now with the new MBP if the energy saver kicks in and turns off the display, and/or the energy saver puts the computer to sleep when I attempt to wake it up the display flashes then goes blank. There is no way to turn it back on. When I open the clamshell the internal display will only show some random pixels and a white line at the top of the screen. There is no way to correct it unless I shut down the machine.
I am running with the Nvidia card, not the internal Nvidia. If I manually put the computer to sleep it will wake normally with no screen issues. It will also not act up if the external display is not connected.
Any help or suggestions of a setting I might have wrong that would cause this?

It is a Gateway FHD2400. Connected from mini display to HDMI. My previous MB was connected to the same monitor for the last year with 0 issues. It was connected mini dvi to VGA.
The issue is strange because it only happens when the computer turns off the screen or sleep. When I put it in sleep it doesn't happen.

    SMC RESET

    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • When waking up my macbook air from sleep, display will not turn back on.

My mid 2011 macbook air running lion is having some issues. The display, after the laptop has been woken up from sleep, will not come back on. The rest of the computer is fully functional as when i press the volume keys, i can hear the sound that it makes, the keyboard brightness keys also work. Theonly way i can fix this at the moment is doing a force shutdown and turning it back on again. If anyone has an answer to this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Having much the same problem with my 2011 11" Air, running 10.8.2 and wondering if you ever got any resolution on this. I've had the same issues through several versions of Mountain Lion.
My display does come up, but what I see is my login screen (I have it set to require a password on wake), but with a beachball, and I can't type in the password field. I can tell that other processes are running (for instance, just now I could hear a YouTube video playing) but I can't make it respond to input.
I've also had times where I put it to sleep by closing the lid, only to come back some time later to hear the fan running and everything unresponsive.
I've reset the PRAM, reinstalled Mountain Lion, reset the SMC. I'm purposely not running a lot of extra software.
Just curious, are you using FileVault at all?

  • Tour will not turn back on after period of inactivity

    Hello,
My Tour will not turn on after about 2 weeks of inactivity. The battery was stored in it at appx 40% (I realize this was probably a mistake...).
When plugged into the charger, the red light goes on for appx 10 secs, then turns off (whether battery is in or out).
Several battery pulls have not made a difference.
Phone has been plugged in for over an hour now, with no result.
Tried putting the battery in with the phone plugged/unplugged.
Plugging phone into PC USB tries to install the drivers (so it's def not fried)
Thank you in advance for ANY help
    Wesley

Yes I was going to suggest the same thing. Either place a friend's in your device or take it into your carrier's store to see if another battery does the trick

  • IMac display doesn't turn back on after sleep

This is a new problem on my two-year old iMac, and didn't happen before. What is happening with my iMac is that when it goes to sleep and the display turns off, the display doesn't turn back on when I move the mouse, press the keys or the power button.
It happens only after around 12 hours or so of inactivity, it seems. I have to reboot the iMac to force the display to turn back on. I think it is display issue, not the computer lockup because I checked which logs were written in /var/log - system.log was being written until I rebooted the iMac. However, I didn't see any information in there around the same time that I tried to turn the iMac back on.
Any ideas on how to debug the issue.

    Hi dailyjoe
    1. Reset your SMC exactly as instructed in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
    2. It would be normal for you to have to startup your iMac if it lost power while in sleep mode, look at the box "Start up automatically after a power failure" in the Energy Saver preference.
I have always left the box for "Start up automatically after a power failure" unchecked and do occasionally find the iMac is shutdown because the power has gone off. I would suggest leaving the box unchecked, it's better than having the iMac going off & restarting multiple times if you are having bad weather or power issues.

  • Display will not come back up after waking up Pro

Several weeks ago I increased the Pro's memory from 2 to 4GB. Since that time when I wake up the Mac, the display, (Westinghouse) will be all white. I then must turn it off and back on after that it looks OK. The increased memory might not have anything to do with the problem.

The obvious question is, if you go back to the original 2 GB configuration, does the problem go away?

  • HT2810 Apple HD Cinema Display will not come back on after brief power cut.

My Apple HD cinema display won't come back after a brief power cut.
There is the little white power light on the front which pulses on three times and then extinguishes, repeatedly.
The Mac itself seems to power up although it's hard to tell if it's bboting properly, as I cannot see anything on the screen.
There is power going to both units so I have no idea what is happening.

This sounds like a very common problem.  If the blinks are one short, one longer, one short..... long pause... repeat.... start searching this forum.   There are also Youtube videos on solving it.  If this is the problem, the solution is easy.  You block both center pins on the 10 pin power connector.   Its crazy but it works.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2086442?start=30&tstart=0
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vodDfic8omA
I just used a very thin strip of paper folded in half and slipped into the display's connector so it covers ONLY the two center contacts, then slip it into the power module very carefully.  Make sure there is some slack in the paper as otherwise it will tear and the contact will still be made.  If it doesn't work at first, try again as the paper made have torn in process.   It would be better to use something stonger like a very thin strip of mylar.   Or you can do what the video shows, but I didn't try that exactly.

  • 23" Apple Cinema Display will not turn back on

For some reason this morning I thought I'd help the world and turned off my ACD. I'm back at the officce now and cannot turn it back on. It's been on since I bought it (yes, it goes into sleep mode when not in use) in December. In either case, is there a special trick to turning this thing back on? I tried the plug-unplug thing, I turned off and on my PC (I also use it for my g4 powerbook) to which it was connected at the time as well - nothing. Any thoughts out there?
Thanks in advance for any help,
PC Box   Windows XP   23" Apple Cinema Display, also a 12" G4 Powerbook

I am having the same issue right now. Except it has happened with my 2 monitors on my dual monitor G5 Quad set-up. Both monitors are down. I tried a different monitor in the same computer and it works fine. So I think it must be a monitor related issue.
Although, I wonder if it possible that the computer has somehow put both monitors into a "deep sleep" mode? Is there such a thing. I tried a PRAM reset that didn't help, so I'm not sure if this is the case.
Next up is to figure out some way to test the power on the 2 power adapters/transformers without electocuting myself. I have a suspicion at this point that a power surge may have killed them?
Let me know if anyone has similar scenario, and if a solution was found.

  • Airport will not turn back on after waking up, slow connections

    So...
Occasionally when I wake my iMac (2.8 GHz aluminum running 10.5.5 and all other updates) up from being asleep my Airport turns off by itself. No matter how many times I click to turn it on it never comes back on. Logging out does nothing, relaunching Finder does nothing. The only way I have found to fix it is to shut down or restart it. Oh, I am connecting to an older b/g Airport Express.
I assumed this was my only issue until I looked at all the reports of slow connection speeds. I realized that things can get very slow sometimes, but my connection bars in the little Airport icon never go down, they stay at a full signal.
And I can't video chat in iChat. With anyone using anything. Go figure.

For the time being I think I'm just going to plug my modem directly into the ethernet port. I can't stand that this ******** is happening with a brand new iMac when I just got done dealing with a fried iMac G5. Is Apple ever going to make another iMac that doesn't have something wrong with it?
If anyone knows of any fixes or other helpful information I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Display does not turn back on after idle

I have an annoying problem with my MacBookPro that never occurred with my previous MacBook. When I leave it open and idle for awhile and the screen goes dark no trackpad motion or keypress gets the screen to come back on. It just stays black. The only way to restore it is to close the computer, wait a second and then reopen it and the screen recycles back on. This can be disruptive of downloads, etc. and seems to be an unnecessary step. Any fixes?

  • First gen Macbook pro will not turn back on after grey screen of death

Hi, i have a first generation Macbook Pro. As i was browsing the web, my computer all the sudden froze and the "grey screen of death" appeared and shut of my computer. After, it tried to restart, but it wont get past the CD rom  or hard drive noise it makes once you press the power button. I hear the noise fully cycle once, then it restarts the noise and keeps skipping. Once its done, the computer IS on, but the screen is black and I cannot do anything. Please help! Ive never dealt with thins kind of problem and Im sort of a noob with computers. Is the computer fried? It is after all 7 years old, and I use it daily.

After the startup sound (be precise) after the sound press the shift Key until the apple appear.
If that wont work. Try an SMC reset
    Then try a PRAM reset
This procedures are on apple webpage
