External display won't work over DVI

I've got an ViewSonic vx2025wm hooked up to my MacBook Pro. It used to work fine over DVI, but some time ago the monitor stopped being able to detect the signal and I had to switch over to VGA (via my Apple DVI-to-VGA adapter). That works fine at the full resolution of the external display, but the image quality leaves something to be desired.
Strangely, the external display works just fine in Windows XP via Boot Camp. Oh, the irony!
Any ideas on how to get this working again? I dread the OS X re-install.

Same problem here. Had a Dell 30" monitor plugged in for a long time. Suddenly stopped working yesterday. The symptoms: the Mac detects the external display and "thinks" it's got it there (I can tell because the active content of the window is gone on the laptop's screen), but the display does not successfully see the output from the Mac (it shines its orange "no signal" light).
Restarting does not seem to help.
I should test it with a new display cable, but am a little reluctant to do this, as the dual link DVI cables required for this monitor are so expensive, and because previous posters on this topic have tried swapping cables with no result.

  • External display won't work on Window

Hi can anyone please help me in this? when I using window XP, my external display won't display out but when I'm using MAC OS X it work well, why? please help... Thanks

I can only help if you are using an NVidia graphics card, as with that you can use the NVidia Control Panel to setup the external display.
    Connect the display
    Start NVidia Control panel
    Select the Display icon
    Then select Change Display Configuration
There you can set the resolution, extend the screen or create a copy et.c.
    Hope that helps...

  • My cinema display won't work over a display port booster and extra long cable.

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro (mid 2010) and an Apple Cinema Display 27". I also have two other DVI monitors. Recently I got a few extenders, so that I can have the computer in a different room to the monitors. Everything works perfectly except the Cinema Display. My system recognises that the cinema display is connected (as it shows as a display in preferences), but the screen is black.
The series of connections from computer to screen is: mini display port to display port adaptor, short display port cable, gefen display port booster, extra long display port cable, display port (female to female) coupler, display port to mini display port.
Please let me know if you have any ideas what the problem may be.
    Thank you!

Per your advice to taking out the longest cable, I ran a couple of tests at different stages of the connection. Over a short conversion to displayport and back to mini display port, the monitor connected no problem. It was only when I introduced the "Display Port Booster" that I lost signal, over the short connection.
I think the unit might be faulty and this is the problem. I sent it back to the company that sold it to me and they're running tests now. Hopefully they will be able to fix it.

  • External Display won't work with boot camp updates?

I'm using Boot Camp 4.0 with the latest updates - on Windows 7 x64.
I've been using my Thunderbolt to DVI adapter for months now on the same monitor (la2206x) and suddenly it doesn't work - forcing the resolution to 640x480, which, really is a lie because the monitor isn't picking up a signal.
Tried this with 2 other monitors as well with no luck.  I depend on the second monitor for testing and design/development, so this has become high priority issue.
And no downloading HP drivers does not work - thet PC doesn't even recognize them and reverts back to "Generic Non-PNP Monitor"
    Anyone else experiencing this issue?
    Kind Regards,
    J

I'd just like to add that this no longer works with OS X Lion 10.3.8 either...  Get your **** together Apple.  It's called MacBook "Pro" for a reason.

Help please. Extended display won't work on MBP and AOC 20" 1600 x 900  60HZ monitor. Mirror display does. I've a mini dvd to vga converter cable. Should this work?

I have the same mini display port adapter and Belkin DVI-HDMI cable (but a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV) so just set this up on it to see if I could duplicate your problem, unfortunately for you (but good for me) I can't.
I connected the adapter+HDMI cable before switching the HDTV on and then powered up the MBP. It (the HDTV) came up with my background right away (it's set at Mirror not extended Desktop) and when I run System Preferences/Displays get the following. Sorry but all I can confirm is that adapter+cable combination should work ...
Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys?

  • External speaker won't work

I have a BlackBerry Curve 8310 and the external speaker won't work. I don't get any notification of calls, texts, etc. I had a new external speaker put in but that didn't fix the problem. Anybody have any ideas of what else could be wrong? My phone is no longer under warranty, so AT&T will not replace my phone.

The same thing happened to me. Go to Applications and then the Utilities Folder and then open the Audio Midi Setup app. Make sure the default output and system output are set to the built in output. The same symptoms happened to me when I ad reset those options to an aggregate device I created for some simple music production. Setting the above setting back to the defaults made everything better.

  • External microphone won't work on Macbook Pro

My external microphone won't work on my Macbook Pro.
My mic is an SE2200 A, and I'm pluggin that into a Behringer Eurorack UB802 (with Phantom power). This is then connected to a 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter so I can plug it into my Macbook Pro.
If I plug this directly into my Macbook Pro into the headphone socket (which I've been told doubles up as a mic socket), and go to Settings -> Sound -> Input, the mic does not appear on screen at all.
If I plug it into a 3.5mm to USB adapter, and plug it into a USB port on my mac, then the USB PnP Sound Device appears on the Settings -> Sound -> Input, but no sound is picked up.
Could any suggest why this isn't working?
    thanks

You have to use a cable that will break out the 3.5 mm TRRS jack into mic, L, and R.
I haven't found the right wiring yet and the cables I have tried don't seem to work.
See this post: What is the wiring digram on the MacBook Pro 3.5 mm TRRS jack?

  • External keypad won't work after installing OS 7.

External keypad won't work after installing OS 7. I have a "Zagg" keyboard that won't pair now to OS 7,...Why?

They do work. I have one and mine is working. Have you tried to reset your iPad? HOlding down teh sleep and home keys until it reboots then try pairing again.
A slightly more drastic thing is to go into the settings and reset all settings. THe downside, you will need to retweak your device but it can help fix keyboard glitches.

  • External display via Mini DisplayPort to DVI no longer works with MacBook.

I had not used my external monitor in the last several weeks. I believe there have been a few OSX Lion updates since the last time I used the external monitor. I had installed all the updates prior to connecting my external monitor again. However, a few days ago I tried to connect the external monitor and all I get is a "No Signal" message on my external monitor. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI works on my LCD TV, so I know  the MDP works. I have also replaced the MDP-to-DVI cord and the external display still doesn't work.
I connected the external monitor to another computer running Snow Leopard and the external monitor works. So, the external monitor does work.
I have seen a few posts aboout this, but nobody seems to have a solution that works or is directly on point to my issue. I have tried to use all the scenarios for plugging in the external monitor and external monitor power. I tried to reboot the laptop with and withoout the external monitor connected. Same thing with the exteernal monitor plugged in and no power, etc. Nothing works. I have tried to repeatedly turn the external monitor on and off while connected to the MacBook. Again, that doesn't work.
So, I am open to any help someone may have. Here is what I am running:
    MacBook, Aluminum 13" Late 2008
    OSX 10.7.3
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. Lion seems to have problems with external monitors.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • Brand new Macbook 13" - external display won't detect through mini dvi-dvi

As per title, it's a brand new Macbook 13" white plastic, (so version is whatever the recent model is.)
As the adaptors are an absolute rip-off, my brother posted me his old one, which he swears was working, and I have no reason to disbelieve him. I've not got another mac to test it on. If it IS the adaptor, then I'll just have to mortgage the house and buy a new one, but I'd like to rule out anything first...(why DO Apple insist on making what must be several thousand % markup on Chinese stuff when it's an essential thing that should have been provided with the Mac like they used to? Anyway....)
What happens is that it either flickers once, or just does nothing. Either way, it doesn't detect another display. Anything else I could or should try before I splash the cash?

How are you getting from miniDVI to HDMI? (adapter(s) type?)
Have you been able to test your macbook on another tv (or DVI monitor?)
It could be a software thing (e.g. related to a system update) as in this thread:
Macbook (Late 2007) External Display Not Working
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2055760&tstart=45
Or it could be something else entirely more mysterious:

  • External Display Won't Recognize in Native Resolution

I have a 40" Sony Bravia 1080p TV. I'm currently hooking it up using mini display adapter to vga, then vga into the PC port in the TV.
Display preferences recognizes the TV as a VGA display. which is fine, however it won't display in the 1920 x 1080 60HZ setting.
Sometimes display preferences recognizes the external display (TV) as a SONY TV. When this happens, it allows me to select a 1080p setting, which works great.
Does anyone know why my mac recognizes the external display as VGA display one time, then a SONY TV the next?
is there any way to manually set what type of external display is hooked up?
It's not a huge issue, but it's frustrating, and i don't understand it.
    Any help is appreciated!

Probably the TV needs to be turned on before the Mac. And when the Sony is switched away from the TV to another input and then switched back to VGA, that's probably when the Mac loses connection to the TV's identity.
You could try the Detect Displays command when that happens, or else try unplugging and replugging the the VGA connector. That's a pain but it might work.
If you want a real permanent solution, something like the Gefen DVI Detective will work. It was designed to fix problems like this.

  • External Display wil not work when I close my MacBook Pro

Help! I'm using a Vizio LCD with Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse and I'm trying to use just the display with the MacBook Closed and Powered, but as soon as I do that the Screen on the VIzio dies. I worked for a while but now it won't work anymore. I can here the mouse and keyboard working but the screen on the Vizio will not display anything. bought a the only thing that I'm thinking is that i bought a cheap HDMI to DVI cable at Walmart..could that be the problem? Any feed back would be welcome. Thanks

6 With the computer turned on and your wireless keyboard or mouse paired, connect the other end of the adapter to the video output port on your MacBook Pro.
7 Once your computer's Desktop appears on the external display, close the MacBook Pro lid.
8 Once it's closed, wake the computer up by either clicking your Bluetooth mouse button or by pressing a key on your Bluetooth keyboard.
You mean it never wakes the external monitor at this point?

  • External display no longer works after Mavericks install

I have a minidisplay port to DVI adapter that connects my Macbook Pro to my television through HDMI port (cable is HDMI to DVI).
This has worked fine for over 2 years, but as soon as I upgraded my Leopard OS to Mavericks, it stopped working.
A side topic is that my Android TV media centre also stopped working as it can no longer connect to my Macbook Pro (it used to work for the past few years).
What am I doing wrong? How can I solve my problems? I have tried everything on the forums, but nothing works at all.
Help, please, pretty please with sugar on top and a cherry!
    Carlos

I'm not sure how installing an application would cause that to happen. Have you shut down (powered off) the iMac completely, and then restarted, since this problem occurred?
Some display settings are stored in PRAM, so if you have not already, try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, you can try disconnecting the iMac from power and reconnecting it, using the reset SMC (power management) procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
When you reconnect it, initially connect the iMac to a wall outlet, by itself. Leave all peripherals disconnected, except for your USB keyboard/mouse. Make sure it is working properly, then connect only the external display.
If it still does not work, as a test, start up with your Mac OS X installation disc. You are not installing anything, but note if the second display is displaying the background image or not when you are booted from a different system.

  • External Display doesn't work

    Hey I have a mid-2010 macbook pro
I have been wanting to connect my dell moniter to my lap top as an external display. I bought a Mini Displayport to VGA converter and the whole nine yards. But whenever I try to connect the MD to VGA adapter to my laptop, nothing happens. My external monitor just goes to power saver mode and does nothing. The only thing that happens is that my laptop screen flickers every once in a while when the adapter is connected to it. Can anyone help me figure this out?
    Thanks

    I've just bought a LG L1900R monitor[1] which i am
plugging in via mini-DVI to VGA adaptor. The monitor
is native DVI, coming with DVI -> VGA adaptor.
What comes to my mind, though, is: since the monitor
is native DVI, maybe Apple's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor
is making the monitor belive the connection is DVI to
    DVI?
that was it. mini-DVI to DVI worked fine.
