External displays shifted

I am running multiple external displays at 1920x1080 and the image is shifted coming out of the thunderbolt ports on my imac.  Using a 2 mini display to VGA have also tried a mini display to DVI and they all send a shifted image.  Tv's that can shift the image make up for this, but I also have some tv's that run straight DVI inputs and the image coming into them is shifted so you can't adjust.  Is there a way the the external screens can be shifted left from the MAC?  There is a bar on the left of the screens...you see the other screen with image adjustment moving the image left becasue it is coming out of the imac thunderbolt ports that way.  Tried mulitple fixes and called apple and they have said there is not a fix for this.  Never had this issue until I upgraded to Maverics, now I can't seem to resolve and I am running images at 1400x1050 which isn't at all what I want to display, but for some odd reason it fills the screen for now.  Anyone else figure out how to fix this without buying new tv's?  If it was one it wouldn't be an issue but with 8 screens this is not an option.

You can find the resolution/scan frequency requirements in KB 88396, iBook video output cables/adapters and resolutions.

  • MacBook Pro's Color LCD "shifts" when connected to external display?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the hi-res anti-glare screen. I just noticed that the internal color LCD "shifts" its colors when I connect it to an external display (a Dell 2408 WFP). If I disconnect the external display, the colors internal color LCD go back to "normal".
I have two images to show what I mean:
This is what it looks like with the external display disconnected i.e. the MacBook Pro on its own: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4558641163/sizes/l/>
This is what it looks like with the external display connected: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4559271260/sizes/l/>
The wallpaper is from pixelgirlpresents.com. I didn't notice this problem before with my older 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7).
My guess is that with the external display connected, somehow the color LCD decides to use the external display's profile as well (instead of its own).
Any ideas on why this is happening? And, more importantly, any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.

@Stefan: Thanks for the tip. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. The color is still off.
Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried these two things:
    1) I tried the "Mirror Displays" option in the Displays Preference Pane. With this option enabled, both displays actually displayed the right colors (right with respect to how each display is calibrated).
    2) I opened the same desktop wallpaper in Preview. Whenever I drag the Preview window so that it spans/crosses both displays (external and Color LCD), there is a light flicker in the wallpaper in the Preview Window. For that brief moment, I can see that the color is right before it changes to the shifted color on the Color LCD.
I found a possibly related thread on a different forum <http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37841>. That doesn't seem to help when both displays are connected.
Now, I am just wondering if this is considered normal - wonky color shifts between the desktop/different windows happen when you have two displays connected....

PS: Note that I am not a graphics designer so my definition of right/wrong is just based on my experience looking at the wallpaper and remembering what it should look like on each display by itself.

  • External Displays Black Background

I work with two external displays and yesterday I unplugged my MBP to go to a meeting. When I returned and plugged my monitors back in both their backgrounds were black. They work fine and I can drag applications into them and be displayed but I can't shift the black backgrounds.
If I open system preferences it launches fine and if I select Desktop & Screensaver the panes launch in all three monitors and display their current background. If I change the background it changes in the preferences pane but not the actual display. If I mirror all monitors it displays fine on all three. The only inconsistency I've noted is that when adjusting backgrounds the pane on the right hand display adjusts the background in the central (primary) monitor. This right hand display is also the actual laptop with the two external display positioned to the left.
Obviously not a critical issue but I would love to get to the bottom of it.

    Hi rossmatt06,
If you are having intermittent issues with the external displays connected to your MacBook Pro, you may find the following article helpful. In particular, if at all possible I would test with different adapters to try to rule out an incompatibility.

  • MacBook external display problem with Panasonic projector

MacBook (September 2006, Intel 945) with Boot Camp and XP Pro won't display externally from Boot Camp to a Panasonic PT-DW5000U projector using VGA (via the MiniDVI-to-VGA adapter/dongle). I tried 640x480x8-bit and 800x600x16-bit and 1024x768x16-bit. I tried unplugging and replugging the adapter. I tried shutting down and restarting into Win XP while all video cabling was connected. I tried pressing F7, Fn+F7, Shift+F7, FnShiftF7, as well as other key combinations involving F7. I tried checking the checkbox called "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." I installed Apple Software Update 2.1. None of these troubleshooting attempts worked. It works fine in OS X to the same projector (using the same VGA dongle). And, while Win XP starts in Boot Camp, the projector displays the Windows XP startup screen (black background and blue progress indicator), but after about a minute that disappears, I get a login dialog on the laptop screen, and the projector then displays only a blank blue screen.
Other displays: It works fine with Boot Camp to a Samsung SyncMaster 940T monitor using DVI (via the MiniDVI-to-DVI adapter/dongle). It works fine with Boot Camp to a Panasonic LC50 monitor using VGA (via the MiniDVI-to-VGA adapter/dongle).
We also have Panasonic PT-D5500 projectors, but I haven't tried them yet.
    1. Is this a problem in the Intel drivers supplied with Boot Camp?
    2. Are there settings on the projector that need to be set to make it work?
    3. I'm also now missing the Intel system tray icon that looks like a slanted computer screen -- how do I get it back?
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Based on the substantial research I've done regarding this issue, here's what the problem could be (without me knowing more):
If your working with an integrated graphics card (Intel 945?), chances are that it doesn't support the "resolution" of the projector - which is information embedded in to your other devices. Furthermore, the "refresh rate" is another piece of information usually "embedded" in to the device your connecting to, and the projector may not have either piece of information accessible to your card, or, vice versa.
Additionally, the drivers required by XP to make it all happen while using your particular video card, may not be installed. Basically, it could be a driver issue as well.
I wish I had a solution for you, however, everything I've read seems to conclude that XP within boot camp has little or no support for external displays (especially when talking about larger resolutions).
Humorously, when I addressed the "Mac Genius" at the Apple Store regarding this question, he told me to go buy a PC - so I did. Already have a Mac Pro, needed a laptop...

  • Disconnect+reconnect external display = washed out image

    hi guys
I need some expert help on this. Using a Dell E178 WFP external display on my 2010 Macbook Pro via mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter. This display has no EDID it seems so I use SwitchResX to create the necessary resolution override (1440x900). SwitchResX has nothing such as daemons or helpers installed on top, so this boils down to graphics drivers.
My problem: When I reboot the machine, the display has the necessary brightness, contrast, and colour balance. If I unplug the display, wait a sec, then plug it back in, the image comes up very bright and washed out, and I can't get a "true" black out of the display.
What this isn't: I have a ColorSync profile, and make sure it is successfullly loaded, i.e. I go through the trouble of opening up system preferences>displays>color to make sure it reloads. This is not a ColorSync problem. It is not the 2.2 vs 1.8 gamma problem either. Ctrl+shift+eject does not fix it. Creating a new colour profile does not fix it either. The usual SMC, permissions, safe boot, etc tricks don't work either.
Apple engineers have sent me a copy of TimingSnoop but were baffled by the display having a "fake" EDID (when run without SwitchResX TS detects no EDID at all). Since I refused to roll back my entire system to 10.6.4 or uninstall SwitchResX (it does not interfere??) they closed the bug stating "insufficient information".
10.6.4 did not have this problem, and my hardware is perfectly fine.
Rolling back the graphics to 10.6.4 fixes this issue (but creates other issues)
I'm looking for information on this. Has anyone had the same happen? Is it confined to sans-EDID displays?
Have googled a lot but I'm running out of search terms... Anything could be of help?
    Thanks in advance.

Again, this is not the gamma problem that's fixed by just opening the display preferences and resetting the colour profile.
This seems to be somehow related to the display's EDID and the video adapter (Nvidia) not resetting properly when first unplugged and then plugged back in. My support request with Apple is more than a year old in total now and replies have been trickling but all of them add little (if anything at all) to a fix.
My particular problem is finding these "a lot of" people who are experiencing this problem. Everyone I've seen so far talks about the gamma/colours problem, never about the brightness and reboot. So yours is the first instance of someone having exactly the same problem. Hopefully we can find more people? Do you know where I should be looking?
Another idea I've had is to possibly talk to the OSX86 community? If Apple are not interesting in issuing a fix for this, maybe someone else has done some work? After reviewing Apple's code (at least that part which is made public) I'm pretty convinced this is in Nvidia's territory, and that gives me very little hope..
I'm interested to know if this has been fixed on Lion at all..? Ideas?

  • Color managemnt icc profiles on external display

I have an asus laptop running windows 7. I currently have Photoshop cs5.1 extended as well as lightroom3. I just purchased an external monitor (wide Gamut Asus PA246q) I do most of my editing and corrections on this monitor. I use the spyder4pro for calibration software on both my external and laptop monitor. I know the laptop monitor is not a great editing monitor, but I calibrated it anyway. Realizing its limitations, I use the external monitor for all use in Photoshop. My laptop display is set up as my “main display” in windows 7 and with my Nvidia GeForce GTX 560m card.
Here is where I need some clarification. There is some conflicting info out there and this has me confused.
When running Photoshop cs5 on my external monitor, if I look under the color settings in my working color space, it lists the monitor RGB profile as my laptop display. Does this mean that my external monitor is using the laptop profile? Some say yes, others no… if this is the case is there any way to fix this other that making my external display my “primary display”? I haven’t noticed the external monitor to have any color shifts or inaccurate colors, but I want to be sure Photoshop is correctly choosing the external monitors profile and outputting accurate colors.. Some clarification would be nice..
As I mentioned earlier, I also use lightroom as well. This too is located on my external monitor this should not be an issue either correct? Any help would be great… thanks for taking your time to comment, it is greatly appreciated

The working space has no relation to your display profile.  Each display has a profile, and documents are converted to that profile when being drawn.

  • HDCP error on MacBook Air (NOT using external display)

I just downloaded a HD (720p) movie through iTunes, and cannot play it on my Mac becuase of a HDCP non-compliance error.  I am running it directly on my MBA, not through an external display... I would have thought the MBA integrated display would be HDCP compliant!  Is this an error or am I wrong in assuming my MBA could play legally purchased HD movies?

Try a System Management Control reset (SMC)
Whilst the machine is plugged into power, Hold down the left side shift control and option buttons at the same time as the power on button.
Hold these down for 4 seconds and relese all at the same time.
If this fails then you may need to clear the caches folder for your user too.

  • G555 help: enable external display from BIOS?

    Fellow G555ians, HELP!
My G555 (model 0873) does not have a backlight problem, but an entire LCD problem. i.e. the LCD does not turn on at all! My laptop is fine. Once every blue moon, when I turn it on the screen works.
I was wondering if someone could tell me the keystrokes needed to enabe EXTERNAL DISPLAY from the BIOS!
Since I can't see when I turn on the comp, I can't get into Windows, and therefore can't use the unction keys. However, I know there is a BIOS option to enable output to an external monitor hooked to the VGA port.
Can you please turn on your G555 and tell me exactly what keys you hit and when to get into the configuration part of the bios, change the display option to something other than LCD ONLY or whatever the default is, save and exit?
This would mean the world to me!

    hi KazeShin,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Here's a screenshot of the Lenovo G555 BIOS.
    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
What you can try is to:
    1. Press the power button and repeatedly tap F2 to get inside the BIOS.
    2. From there, press the right arrow key once and press the down arrow key 9 times.
    3. Power ON Display should now be highlighted. Press Enter key once and press the down arrow key once to select Auto-Selected display then press Enter.
    4. Connect an external monitor via the VGA cable Press F10 to save and exit BIOS. Upon reboot, the display should automatically transfer to an external monitor.
    5. If that doesn't work, press Fn+F3 to shift to an external display.
    Hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Fan Speed with 3 vs 2 external displays

    Hello,
When I'm in my home office, I often use my MacBook Pro Retina in Clamshell Mode (in a BookArc) with external displays.
Originally, I used 2 external displays (2x 1920x1800), and the fan speed and temperature remained stable at the lowest end of the spectrum (around 2200rpm and 60°C). However, recently I decided to use all the ports available and plug in an extra monitor (1680x1050) for that extra screen real estate. I can tell you that having three external monitors really makes a difference to my productivity. However, just by adding this extra display, the fan speed boosts up to a minimum of 4500rpm and often goes up to around 6000rpm. The temperature is also high (I guess the fan speed is a symptom of this).
I understand that the extra pixels in the 3rd monitor could definately tax the GPU more. However, I am suprised that the fan speed and GPU temperatures go so high, especially as all I am doing is moving around on a Preview PDF file, just from adding the extra monitor (especially with it's modest resolution).
    I guess my questions are:
Is this expected behaviour for the rMBP?
Is this going to damage my rMBP with extended use (say, a good 6-8 hours pretty much every day for the next few years)?
    Thanks very much,
    Richard

I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • New External Display Color Syncing

So I got a refurbished Samsung SyncMaster 932GW for my Late 2006 MacBook to use as a semi-permanent external display. Obviously I'd like it and the built-in screen to look the same, so I set both to use the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (because neither profile works with the other). For comparison purposes I'm using the test pattern here: http://www.pacificnet.net/~johnr/barsb.html. Both displays are at full brightness (and contrast on the 932GW) and I've turned off the Dynamic Contrast, MagicColor, and other gewgaws on the 932GW.
On the SyncMaster the test pattern looks...right. The white looks as pure as I can tell, and the other colors are what I remember them to be.
But on the Color LCD, it looks crappy. The interface (windows, icons, etc) have a strong bluish cast, and the display overall (esp. the test image) has an overall anemic quality. This might just be due to comparison, but it's still distracting.
Am I going about this whole thing the right way? Is there some other standard (image or profile) I should be using? Or is it an entirely hopeless endeavour to get these two displays to agree?

What I gather from reading magazines and browsing various forums is that most monitors do not quite have the correct colors out of the box, shift over time, and need to be calibrated periodically. Calibration can be software based, using your eyes to calibrate (such as with the color calibration tools provided with OSX), or can use calibration devices, such as HUEY or Colorvision's Spyder 3. Calibration devices actually read your screen colors and tonal settings and adjust them to the standards you select. I've found Huey to be useless on LCDs. Using Spyder 3 has resulted in better colors on my MacBook Pro screen, but I have been unable to get Spyder 3 Elite to match the laptop screen and external monitor colors (Wacom 21ux), even though it is specifically intended to match colors across a numbe of monitors. Would like to hear what progress you make.

  • Can not properly view cover flow in full screen in external display

My mac is the new Mac book pro 15.4 inch screen and I connect my mac pro to external display e.g. Samsung LCD monitor 24 inches.
The bug is that I can not PROPERLY view full screen (in external display) for some application e.g. iTunes, and Front Row.
    - When I use iTunes, I can not properly view Cover Flow view in full screen (in the external display screen) except the case of mirror display.
    - For Front Row, I can not view full screen in external display but only my mac display.
However, for other DVD or VDO players, I can view movie on external display in full screen and I still be able to do other works on my mac screen.

  • Connecting a MacBook to an external display or projector

I have tried to connect my MacBook to a projector and to a TV using the mini-DVI to Video adapter, both with the same poor results. Here's the steps I took:
    - Turned on the TV
    - Connected the video cable to the TV "video in"
    - Connected the video cable to the MacBook with the mini-DVI to vieo adapter
    - Opened the MacBook
    - Turned it on
The MacBook boots up, the MacBook resolution changes and the video on the TV is distorted, showing essentially three images of the MacBook display. Any attempt to adjust the resolution using system preferences just makes it worse.
Has anyone had success using a MacBook for presentations using either a TV or a projector and, if so, what procedure do you use to connect?

    Greetings from Hong Kong-
I have a major presentation to give in a couple of days and have NOT been successful connecting to an external display. I am starting to freak out. Any instructions would be helpful!

  • DVD player full screen on external display

I'm looking for a way to play my DVD full screen on my external display while I can work in other apps on the main screen. Preferrably with Apple DVD Player (OS X 10.7 Lion in my case). Any ideas? Hidden settings perhaps?
It's stuff like this makes feel let down by Apple. It's natural feature to want this like for instance when playing DVD on a big screen in front of an audience and prepare something on the main display for viewing.

I know I can do this already with VLC. For some discs that don't play well in VLC I'd prefer DVD Player though.
