External drive creates "phantom" drives inside built in HD.

Has this happened to anyone else? My External storage drive (Maxtor 250GB One-touch) has somehow created 3-4 other "phantom" drives in my build in HD. Basically when I download something directly into my External, it sometimes will create a separate HD and store it into my internal HD, eating away my free space on the internal. This wouldn't be a problem, however, I can't seem to locate the "fake" drives ANYWHERE! I can access them when attempting to open a file, but there's no way I can delete the drives themselves. I know this sounds really stupid, but somehow it's happened and about 5-10 GBs of my internal HD is being taken up by these "phantom" drives that I can't seem to locate. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi, Adam, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your post sure does sound strange, but that may only be a product of the way you're describing what you see. Can you identify a particular downloadable file that has behaved this way for you, so I can have a look and download it for myself?
My suspicion is that you're downloading .dmg files, which are disk images. [Read about disk image file formats here.] When you double-click a .dmg file's icon, the file is decompressed into a "virtual disk" that is mounted on your desktop. Double-clicking the icon of that "disk" shows you its contents, just as if it were a floppy disk, CD, hard drive or flash drive. What is really throwing you, however, is the fact that the real disk space occupied by those files on the virtual disk is always on your startup volume, not some other volume such as your external drive. This is true even if the original .dmg file resides on another volume. As the .dmg is expanded, its decompressed contents are written to the startup volume, not to the volume where the .dmg is located.
You can free up that space on your internal drive by "ejecting" the virtual disks that appear on your desktop. And you can then free it up on the external drive by trashing the .dmg files and emptying the Trash. If you try to trash the .dmgs while the virtual disks are still mounted on the desktop, you'll be told they are in use and can't be trashed. You must "eject" the virtual disks first.

I need to know how to fix this. I updated itunes and it created a new itunes folder on my hard drive after I ported all of it to an external for space concerns. It took all my files from that folder and recreated part of it to my hard drive. Now when backing up I have no idea where it is backing up to. Any help appreciated

Sort of. My media was on multiple hard drives, some local, and actually some networked, and then I conolidated it to a single external hard drive. Renaming drives and moving files sounds like a recipe for disaster.
When doing a consolidation, files are copied to a new location and the old ones are left untouched. Does iTunes create a backup database of the file locations before doing a consolidation? I could use the backup if that were the case, since everything still exists in the original locations.
I've recieved my replacement hard drive for the one that crashed and I may be able to copy everything back manually if I knew where it went. I looked inside the iTunes Music Library.xml to see if I could figure out the folder structure, but for some reason they all say they're located in the iTunes folder in My Documents. They're not, of course.
Would the Previous iTunes Library.itl be of any use, or is that for another purpose?

  • I consolidated my library to an external hard drive then the drive crashed. How can I restore it?

I consolidated my library to an external hard drive, a few days later the drive crashed. Everything still exists on the local computer in the old locations. How do I tell iTunes to use the old locations again? I don't need to redownload anything, I hadn't purchased anything between the consolidation and the crash.
Due to space contraints, the way it was stored before was not the iTunes default. Most things were in the default location, but the media folder location was on a separate hard drive.

  • How to find out the cause of "Cannot create JDBC driver"?

A small Java web application constantly runs into a problem of "Cannot of create JDBC driver of class 'org.postgresql.Driver' for connect URL 'jdbc:postgresl://localhost:5432/myapp'". The problem still exists after upgrading the driver. After recycling the server, this problem will be resolved. It, however, will come back after a while.
Any suggestions to solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot.

However since it is an intermittent problem there are only two possibilities
    1. You have some code that is written correctly and some that is not.
    2. It is a resource not code usage problem. Such as that you are not closing all result sets, statements and connections. Here is related log messages:

  • MacPro is "seeing" phantom drives.

    he others are MacPros
We have been having trouble with broken links in illustrator, and found that the MacPro is "seeing" phantom drives. This is what the computer thinks is connected: external_Drive, external_Drive-1, external_Drive-2 external_Drive-3 external_Drive-4.
Drive 1 2 3 and 4 do not exist. Repairing permissions, running Applejack zaping the PRAM, switching accounts does not "unmount" these volumes.  they do not show up on the desk top, but when I run {cd /volumes LS } in terminal, it lists these phantom drives. This is happening on 6 out of 10 computers I have looked at.
this is what the log looks like:

    The others are all MacPros

Thanks, but Galileo is a 64 GB La Cie Flash drive (thumb drive) and Guardian of Forever, 2TB is a external Western Digital "My Book" running time Machine. When I eject Galileo, and relaunch terminal, it shows Galileo is still mounted, and when I reinsert Galileo my computer thinks there are two of them.
The issue is that if I place an eps file in illustrator, and pass it along to a co worker Illustrator "Thinks" the art is on a share point that does not exist, so all the links are broken.
That and I do not know how to purge these mounted volumes.
Oh, and thank you for your time, and getting back to me so quickly.

  • A lot of my music is on an external Hard Drive, currently "H" drive.  When I try to play a song in the Library in Itunes I get the message that it can't find the music.  Info says it's in a different location "G" Drive.  But it's not. it's in "H" Drive.

What if you take this same topic of an external hard drive with music but instead of directly attached to the computer the music is on a Network Attached hard drive(NAS)? Will I be able to add music to my ipod without any problem? Step that up a notch, will the two computers on my network be able to recognize the music on the NAS? Will the two users be able to create their own playlists and update their ipods independently? Now step up that up one more notch, will I be able to do this with one PC running XP and my macbook with OS X?
Before I run out and buy a NAS I want to be certain. I also would like to convert my DVD library in the future and put it on the network available to an AppleTV or other UpNp media player in the future, because I love having power at my finger tips.

  • Create GPP drive mapping entries programmatically

Can anyone provide any sample codes that creates drive mapping entries in group policy preference? I am not looking for script to create the GPO, I am looking for codes to create mapping entries inside it instead. I've been searching for MS document
    but found nothing so far.
Specifically I am looking for codes that can create entries using item level targeting criteria as below:
    - OS type
    - session type (RDP vs local console)
    - user group membership
    Any pointer is appreciated.

    Also you can use.
    $Network = New-Object -ComObject "Wscript.Network"
    $Network.MapNetworkDrive("P:", "\\MyComputer\MyShare")
    or
    net use Z: \\server\share /persistent:yes

  • [Solved] External USB 3.0 drive not seen under /dev/sd*

Ok, thought this would be easy but for some reason I cant get arch to see the physical drive. Its a new Seagate 2TB external USB 3.0 drive. I connected it to a windows laptop and it was quickly recognized (ntfs). I then installed ntfs-3g but still cant see it. I then formatted it under windows as ext4, but its still not seen. I tried this with 2 arch PC's, both the same issue. I seen a few other posts and tried a few things like making sure the mod xhci_hcd was running. I have the latest updates on each system. fdisk -l does not show the device at all! I can see and boot to other USB devices fine just not this one, maybe since its USB3.0??
I noticed here, they talk about maybe USB3 is broke in the new kernels, after 3.10.2 maybe?
    Similar issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126299
    Possible bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36296
However, I would think that by now, this would have been fixed as USB3.0 is more common? Other than trying to find a OLD 3.10.2 kernel any other advice?

Awesome, THANKS!! Yes I got it to work following this and specifically Da_Coynul's post:
I was able to get my external drive working again by telling the usb-storage module to ignore uas for the device. Here is how to do it:
First, create a file named ignore_uas.conf in the /etc/modprobe.d directory containing the following*:
    options usb-storage quirks=Vendor_ID:Product_ID:u
*(substitute your actual Vendor_ID and Product_ID obtained from the lsusb -v command).
    Next, regenerate your inital ramdisk:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    Finally, reboot your computer.
Although this is not a solution to broken uas, at least it will let you use your drive as before hmm

Thanks everyone...Now I can see the drive, and will work on formatting it with XFS...

  • External enclosure and hard drives for mac g5 quad

I would like to add an external enclosure with two drives to my mac g5 quad. Does anyone have experience with these or do you know if this will work okay without issues?

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW924AL2K/
also wondering if this enclosure has a fan or if that would be necessary...
    Thx

I have the same case, only mine's the version that has PATA drives inside. It's pretty quiet and does have a fan. I've had no issues with it. It's setup with two 250GB drives striped into a RAID 0 configuration.
I personally am not a fan of Maxtor drives - I prefer the Western Digital RE2 RAID Edition. I have two of these in an external SATA enclosure.
What will you be using the drives for? You'll get better speed from the drives by putting them in an external SATA case, although this requires adding an eSATA controller card to the computer. A single WD RE2 drive is faster than my RAID 0 FW800 setup, and the FW800 setup runs pretty close to the maximum FW800 transfer speeds of about 80 MB/sec.
I'm using a FirmTek Seritek 2EN2 enclosure and their 2SE2-E PCI Express card. OWC has a bundle with these two items. Like I stated earlier, I've got two 500GB WD RE2 drives inside (drives purchased from Newegg.com where they're less expensive).
OWC also has a Mercury Elite eSATA enclosure which looks just like the FW800 one, only in black.

  • Clone external drive to internal drive...

    Hi there guys,
My iMac was working perfectly yesterday, but for some reason, iDisk isn' t syncing now. At all. I have repaired permissions, trashed pref files, disabled syncing, enabled syncing, set up new user accounts etc etc, but the only thing that worked was when I booted from external - it synced just fine.
I want to know whether it's worth moving the external over to the internal and copying things over from there/cloning the internal from my FW external?
Or should I just boot up from external for the forseeable future?
I made a partition on my external and created a bootable clone on a partition with 1GB more space on it than the internal.
The internal shows 97.8 GB (105,020,411,904 Bytes) are used, but the external shows only 86.6 GB (92,987,826,176 Bytes) used and it's supposed to be a clone!
The Internal has a size of 148.9 GB (159,907,630,080 Bytes) yet the external has a size of 149.9 GB (160,927,055,872 Bytes) so obviously I worry that if I clone the external over to the internal, that it might not fit.
Also, I use SuperDuper!. Would I have to erase the internal drive before I started to clone it from the external?
Is there anything else I can do to save the iDisk syncing? It works just fine on my other iMac and my MacBook (which uses the same router).
    Thanks.

    Solved.
Booted up from external. Cloned internal to match external. Booted from internal. Done.

  • Adding external back-up hard drive?

Im relatively new to iMac and still finding my way around it. Likewise, I've looked around the discussion forum but unable to find the key words to my problem but Im sure it has been discussed before. If so I apologise.
I have a Toshiba External (Back Up) Hard Drive which was a back up to my Windows Based PC and therefore has numerous images on there. Anyway, how do I get this set up on my iMac without loosing any of the info on the Back Up hard drive, also wish to use this as a back up for images from my IMac too. Do I also need to reconfig my images as I used Adobe photoshop in the first instance or will it change automatically to iPhoto?
Any info / assistance will appreciated but please keep advise / explanations simple as I sometimes tend to throw dummy out of the pram when I get frustrated. Just like now!! LOL.

Here's the problem, in my attempt to explain it a little more clearly. There are a number of different ways data can be written to a drive, called "partition schemes"... think of them like languages used when printing a book. Like languages, some systems cannot understand some drive partition schemes. Unlike languages in a book, however, a system may be able to read a partition scheme, but be unable to write to it.
In the case of a Mac, it can read/write APM (Apple Partition Map), GUID and FAT (an old MS-DOS scheme) drives. However, it can only read NTFS drives, and NTFS is what Windows typically uses. Most likely, this drive of yours is NTFS. (You can tell for sure by selecting the drive in Disk Utility - not the volume, with the familiar name, the drive, right above it with a name that includes the size - and looking in the info at the bottom of the DU window.)
So, your Mac can't write to that drive at all, even though it can read it. Although there is software that can give your Mac the ability to write to that drive, it will never work with the Mac's built-in backup software (Time Machine), which requires that the backup drive be GUID. That may not be an issue, as TM is far from the only backup software out there. Something like [Carbon Copy Cloner|http://www.bombich.com> or SuperDuper may be able to work with that drive, given software that lets you write to NTFS.
Whether or not you ultimately end up making this drive work for backup of your Mac, note that it is important that you have multiple backups of any data you don't want to lose. So, those images need to be stored in at least one other place (preferably two or more). That given, you may want to repartition that drive with a more Mac-friendly scheme after you've gotten some backups of those images made. (Assuming, of course, that you're no longer working with Windows... if that's not the case, keeping a Windows backup on that drive would probably be wise.)
See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/guides/backups> for more on backup strategies in general.

  • Firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized

After last system update, my firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized. Any solutions?
Why does MacOS go backwards... gets worse over time?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! I have had no trouble with any update Apple puts out (the Combo update is what I normally choose). Are you running 9.2 like your specs. say? You are in the Tiger forum, so I'll assume you haven't updated your Macs specs.
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours may be the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • External Ethernet/NAS Hard Drive with Time Machine

    Hi,
I'm going to be purchasing a Mac Book Pro once leopard is launched and I'm wanting to get an external hard drive to back up using Time Machine. Now, I'm wanting to set this up through a wireless router so that a can make my backups without having to remember to connect every so often.
Does anybody know if Time Machine works via NAS/Ethernet as the Tech Spec of Time Machine just mentions USB and Firewire? I presume it will work, as it would seem a little daft if it doesn't.
Following on from that, does anybody have any recommendations for external NAS/ethernet hard drives? I was wanting something from 250GB to 500GB. I have seen this one -
    http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4J9D&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=ext ernalhard+driveethernet&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=50473
    And this one -
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128482
Any help is very much appreciated!

Yes, networked drives, servers, etc., will work as a Time Machine target -- all it needs is a folder it can write to. I'll leave the drive recommendation to someone else.

  • Time Machine only shows the current copy of the file I am trying to restore. There is none of the time machine backup histories shown. I am running OSX 10.7.5. I see the backup files on my external Time Machine hard drive. Help

Time Machine only shows the current copy of the file I am trying to restore. There is none of the time machine backup histories shown. I am running OSX 10.7.5. I see the backup files on my external Time Machine hard drive in the Backups.backupdb folder.
Time Machine does show the history of my Macintosh HD, but when I try to navigate to the folder I wish to restore the backup history disappears. I've been searching for answers and I have not found one that works for me.

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?
