External Drive Filling Up Too Fast

Hi all,
The space on my external hard drive seems to be filling up way faster than it should. Although I've hardly added any docs, etc to my internal iMac drive in the past week (used about 50 G of my 320G drive), the free space on my external USB drive has dwindled from ~20G to a little over 4G.
I thought that Time Machine only backed up the changed files during each archive. What's going on? Why am I running out of external HD space so quickly?
Thanks for your responses.

I'm with Maggot. I have not been using iphoto at all, don't use entourage at all. Just started using Time Machine the first of January with a brand new 500g ext hd for the back up. As of today it has used up over 1/2 that space in backups. I am a photographer, and do use hi res images, but the number of images that should be stored right now should not take up that much space - and that would be the bulk of my work that would eat up space. When I look back in Time Machine, it looks to me that there is a complete backup of everything over and over again.
So, looks to me that I have a real mess to figure out now. I had thought that only the new files would be backed up NOT the older files, but that's not what I'm seeing. Yuck. I haven't got a clue now as to what to do to get this set up properly. HELP!

  • DVD drive spinning far too fast on Equium

I have a problem with my DVD disc drive spinning far too fast to me. I have Windows XP on my Toshiba Equium laptop.
I haven't found any way to set CD / DVD spin speed.
I don't know if there is any, but I have used such feature in an other computer, and I would really much like to slow down the speed.
The problem with speed is not malfunction.
I don't face the problem with DVD:s, but the drive is too effective with CD:s, its literally too powerful.
The speed and noise are insane. If I touch the computer or the table where computer is, the shaking hurts my hands.
It's like a motor saw, and also sounds a bit loud.
I can't hear the game I play while CD is spinning.
I wonder the sturdy construction of my computer, while it's still not broken.

    Hello
I don't know which notebook model do you have but Toshiba has designed small tool for such purposes. It is acoustic silencer. When you watch DVD movei or when you listen music CD you can switch into silent mode and you will not hear that DVD drive works.
Visit Toshiba support page and check if this tool is available for your notebook model too.
    Bye

  • How do I get my Mac to recognize external drive filled with 5 projects, created at Apple Store?

How do I get my Mac to recognize external drive filled with 5 projects, created at Apple Store? I created 6 hrs worth of projects on computer in apple store with my external. came home my computer did not recognize it at all. went back to apple, they said oh click the news reel bottom left that will do it, came back home and nope....not recognizing it, in fact it says no events exist on this disc. I want to get the 5 projects and put up on vimeo tonight. ugh.

    Hi Tom,
I'm so impressed with how you help everyone solve their problems. I will do my best here, but my husband will be home soon and knows how this large external is formatted.
How late do you all work there? I'm on east coast. Is the screen shot you wanted? I opened up external and
    this is what I see.
Drive is connected to usb in back of computer. N

  • External drive filling up with TM

I set up TM a few days ago and have been very happy with it until tonight when I realised that my external disk is filling up very quickly. Let me explain...
I have a 320GB Lacie disk with about 300GB actually available to use. After my first TM backup I was left with about 100GB spare - plenty I thought. However, after checking tonight I see I only have 60GB spare and yet I've hardly touched the computer and certainly not created any large files, at this rate the drive will be full in another week or so.
I'm guessing that in order for TM to go back in hourly increments it's saving duplicates of various files and this is what is filling up the drive. In the meantime I've turned TM off to only do manual backups a lot less regularly, but this is sort of defeating the purpose.
I have a folder on my external HD for every hourly backup TM has done, is it safe delete all but the most recent backup folder and start afresh?

OK, the Windows partition is now excluded. I've erased the disk and am going to start again. I've attempted to alter the TM .plist script as outlined here to alter the hourly back ups to daily...
'If you think Time Machine backs up too often (or not often enough) for your liking, navigate into /System » Library » LaunchDaemons. There you'll find a file named com.apple.backupd-auto.plist. Open it in your favorite text editor, and look for this section:
    <key>StartInterval</key>
    <integer>3600</integer>
Change the 3600 number to some other time interval in seconds, and you'll have changed Time Machine's backup interval.'
But I don't have permissions to alter and re-save the file even after tweaking permissions in the Get Info window. I think I'll leave TM to do it's hourly and then weekly archive an reassess the situation after that.

  • IPod 60gb storage question - filling up too fast?

I have a new 60GB that I just began adding music to. I am confused about the amount of storage I have available. So far (according to the iTunes notes) I have added 93 songs/6.2 hours/427.6mb, using 17.19GB out of 60GB. I am importing using the AAC encoder at 128kbps.
Am I missing something here? I thought the 60GB could hold around 15,000 songs. At this rate, I will fill up the iPod before I hit 1000 songs. I do not have anything else (pics/videos), just music.
Any help would be much appreciated. I am (quite obviously) new to this and can't figure out where I have messed up.
    Thank you!

    60GB   Windows XP

I was able to answer my own question here...I had just switched some USB cables around, so when I did my normal back-up to my external hard-drive, it ended up backing up to my iPod. Phew! I am embarrassed, but at least it was an easy fix.

  • Time machine_ filling up too fast!  Mac Os X Version 10.6.8

time machine_ can I get it to just back up 1 area of my computer and not the entire network? I did not originally set this thing up and know nothing about it but I find that it fills up very quickly (1TB) and then starts dumping the earliest stuff. In reality I only want one area of my computer backed up and not the entire network and I think that that is why it is filling up so quickly. very frustrating to loose stuff that I originally wanted to keep.
    any suggestions?
    thanks

How much data is on your internal HD?
Time Machine won't back up anything on your network, and will back up external HDs only if you remove them from the exclusion list.
If possible, it's best to let Time Machine back up everything (unless you also have a "clone" backup), as it will be rather difficult to reconstruct things when (not if) your internal HD fails and loses everything.

  • External MP3 plays back too fast

    Hi,
I entered a previous post and said that my External MP3 was
not working with Flash 8.0. I tried a longer sound wave and what it
appears to be that the sound wave is playing back but at a high
    speed that is unintelligeble.
Does the MP3 file need to be converted or formated in a
certain way to use as an External MP3. I have imported the exact
same MP3 file and it works with no problem in embedded mode.
    thanks,

    Hi
Audio that sound like Chipmunks is cause by inappropriate bit
    rate.
it's best to use 16-bit 22 kHz mono sounds (stereo uses twice
as much data as mono), but Flash can
import either 8- or 16-bit sounds at sample rates of 11, 22,
    or 44 kHz.

  • IPod Nano fills up too fast

I have loaded about 1G of songs (300 or so songs)on my new iPod Nano 4G and it says I only have 300k memory left. Does anyone know how this happens and how to correct it?
    Thanks.
    Jared

    Jared,
Are you sure that the music (and album art?) is really only 1GB? Using Apple Lossless, e.g., will result in larger files.
Anyway, you can restore the iPod to it's original state using the updater (on the iPod CD)...

  • Need a good recommendation on an external drive

Digitizing DVCProHD footage. Our internal 3TB Raid keeps getting filled up. Wanted to capture straight to an external Drive. Was going to use LaCie bigdisk quadra via FW800 but FCP kept dropping frames during capture and would bust the capture. Currently capturing to Internal Raid (using Apple Pro Rez(HQ)) Then transferring files to external drives. Would like to skip this step.
If I use the eSATA connection with this drive can I capture straight to it or is there another external drive that would be fast enough to capture directly?

Why are you capturing DVCPRO HD as ProRes HQ? That is a HUGE waste of space. Capture DVCPRO HD as DVCPRO HD...zero quality loss. You gain nothing by going to ProRes from DVCPRO HD.
And ProRes HQ is for 2K workflows...all you are gaining over regular ProRes are files twice the size.
    http://forums.creativecow.net/faq/applefinalcutpro#75
You are wasting a lot of space needlessly. And the ONLY external drives that can play back HQ are eSATA, Fibre and miniSAS. Firewire won't cut it.

  • External drive better for virtual machines?

I've been running VMWare Fusion to run my Windows under Mac (just fine too). But a friend just told me would perform even better if VM was on an external drive. Is that true? If so, USB or FW matter?
    Confused and curious.
    Thanks.

Internal drives are faster than external drives, so the VM should perform better on the internal drive. If you put them on the external drive, then Firewire is faster than USB.

  • Which is faster for music production? internal hard drive or external drive

hey there. simple question. i'm looking to run music poductin software on an apple mac - would sound files be retrieved faster from a new mac book pro internal hard drive or an external drive? (am thinking one of those lacie orange rugged things that spin at 7200 rpm)
and if the sound files would play better coming form the internal hard drive, would it compromise processor speed for running soft synths / effects units etc etc?
please note am not talking about my current mac book, but a new mac book pro
chanx in advance - horton ;o)

For what it is worth here is my tuppence worth on the subject, horton. (and a warm welcome to the forums , by the way!)
One of the major reasons why many sound professionals (and others worried about speed) use fast external FW800 or (when possible) eSata drives for their work, rather than the internal drive of an MBP or the like, is that the internal boot drive is already carrying the OS and a bunch of apps on its fast, outer sectors. It is usually doing a fair bit of work keeping things running, too. An external FW 800 drive can be kept unencumbered of such things.
On top of this the 2.5" drives in notebooks are slower at the best of times than 3.5" drives. If you want real speed, my suggestion would be that you keep the internal drive for your OS and Apps as much as possible, and get a fast 7200 rpm 3.5" FW800 external with its own power supply for your sound files (assuming you will have access to mains power).
If you use the internal for this sort of purpose too, you are going to find that the internal fills up fast, that it soon develops free space fragmentation issues, and that it gradually slows to the speed of mollasses!
    Cheers

  • I have my iphoto library on an external drive, but it filled up.  Can I have another library in another external drive and use them both?

I have old pictures in my external drive that I filled up.  I would like to make another iphoto library in a new external drive and have this one for new pictures.  Can I do that? And how will I be able to see my old pictures on my older external drive? My iphoto is 9.5.1.

Yes.  Another way to switch between libraries is with this menu in iPhoto:

Yes, it will do a full backup.
and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?
Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups.  When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it.

  • My time Machine keeps saying, "Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74 GB but only 289.80 are available." I have already excluded files. I have a 1tb external drive. HELP!!!

For over two weeks now I have been frustated and not having my TIme Machine back up to my 1tb external drive. I dont understand why now its a problem.  It keeps saying
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74GB but only 289.80GB are avialable.  Time Machine needs work space on the bakup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a large backup disk or make the bakup smaller by excluding files." So I have already excluded almost all of my files, and even deleted the backup disk yet, that quote still keeps popping up. I am truly at a wall with this. I have a Mac OS X version 10.7.5. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE????

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.
