External drive help! Need a hardware wizard!

Hello,
I have a brand new 500GB external that tipped over while it was spinning. It got ruined with about 350GB of info on it. I have in the past used Drive saver and spent over $800 to retreive info on a 250GB drive, and this time I was not about to shell out the $1200bucks they want to retreivefrom the 500GB.
I am aware that the following will void my warranty.
I posted in the past here, and someone talked to me about replacing the plates from one drives to another. I opened the damaged drive and noticed the reading arm had skipped off the hard disk plates, and that the disk edges were damaged. The poster, suggested that the reading arm could be damaged. I figured that I'm willing to buy a new drive for $140 (same as the other one) and risk the $140 and attempt to replace the 3 plates from the inside the damaged drive to the inside of the new drive.
Well it could not read it and got the error message that the drive could not be read and did I want to initialize it. I clicked yes, and used disk utility to initialize it, and got error message :"Disk erase failed input/output error". Although the icon of the drive appears in disk utility, it reads next to it" 2.0TB DMI" it is a 500GB.
So now I am left with what I feared, is 2 X 500GB not recognized by the computer and not initializeable.
Anyone knows a magic approach to this hardware problem? With technologies becoming available to the common "mortal" out there, is there something out there I could use to get my drives back to normal.... Maybe I could buy a $300 piece of hardware even if it was $500... it would be cheaper that using Drive saver. .... How does Drive saver do it?
Do the 3 plates have to be alligned in a certain way to be operational?
I need Magic Tom!

Over in another forum (can't remember which) a color expert was saying that if you want to be able to accurately calibrate an LED-backlit display, make sure you get a calibrator that's a spectrophotometer like the ColorMunki, instead of the colorimeter that's inside most inexpensive calibrators.
Oh, I found it

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the new drive. If the old external drive doesn't contain a bootable Mac OS X system or a Time Machine backup, you can just drag its contents to the new drive. If it does, use software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

  • Need to put Itunes on External Drive - HELP PLEASE

My computer is full of stuff and my ITunes is overwhelming it. I would like to move everything to my external drive and just leave it there. Has anyone done this successfully. Do I have to burn everything I own out of fear of maybe losing it? Any suggestions would be great. I'm not the most computer saavy person...
    Thanks,
Dell Dimension 4600   Windows XP Pro

i too did not want all my music on my internal drive and have successfully moved everything to an external... now i don't know about moving teh actual itunes program but you can move teh folder your itunes takes music from to an external... just go into your setting and change the libraries to that of teh external drive... then just copy everything from your main itunes folder to your new one.... you will also have to get rid of your old playlists because it will not be able to find any of your songs because you moved them.... you can also just relocate all teh files manually but that would take forever... if you don't have complicated playlists then this is a good option in my opinion...

  • HELP I am missing 340 gig's!! "hard drive help needed"

ok so i had a 160gig hardrive in my macbook pro. i bought a new 500gig for it. i used Drive Genius 2 to copy the old hard drive to the new one. when i installed the new one everything works great except it only see's the 160 gig not 500? so my question is how can i make my computer recognize the whole hard drive?
thanks for any and all help!!

Start over by first prepping your new drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from theUtilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Connect your old drive that you have installed in an external enclosure and boot from it by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION button until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Now clone back to your new drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the internal drive.
Source means the external startup drive.

  • Slow data transfer to USB External Drive - Help

I'm running the WD MyBook Essential 160GB via 2.0 on an iMac FlatPanel 1GHz running OSX 10.4.7.
    Questions:
    1. I want to both (a) back-up my 80GB HD for on a regular basis in case of emergencies and also off-load media files (Mainly movies/photos) I may want to access later but don't want on my internal drive taking up space. Is there any recommended software that will do both? Do I need to partition the external drive to do this, i.e. one side for the back-up and one side for media file storage?
    2. I stupidly bought the USB2.0 version of MyBook when I should have got the FW. Is there a way to make transfers faster? The transfer rate is unbelievably slow. Is there any reason that transfer of 10G would take almost all night?
    Thanks for any help.

Assuming the internal drive of your USB case is Parallel IDE/ATA, this is all you need at $46 + shipping:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/MacAlly/PHR100AF/
If it is SATA, this is what you'd need, at $60 + shipping:
    http://www.cooldrives.com/combo-sata-drive-enclosure-firewire-and-usb.html
To tell the difference between SATA and Parallel IDE see these images of the back of the hard drive which I got off the Newegg store website for SATA (images are reduced for typical web browser page size, but still show the importance of the difference between the ports): and Parallel IDE .
I might add some SATA hard drives have the 4 pin power connector you see on the right of Parallel IDE drives in addition to the standard SATA power connector. Don't let this confuse you.

  • MDT 2012 deploy OS from USB external drive failed - need to unplug and plug it once again

We are using MDT 2012 and deploying Windows 7 using media (USB external hard drive). We can successfully deploy Windows 7 32 bit using this method but there is a problem with deploying Windows 7 64bit. This problem appears only on HP EliteBook 840. We can
boot into WinPE 64 bit and can start proper task sequence, all image is applied then after restart, before logon screen appears there is an error saying that cannot find litetouch.vbs script. After clicking ok, I can logon to Windows and there is no usb external
drive recognized. But when I unplug and plug usb drive once again it is recognized by Windows and can be used. I can see that Windows install some drivers just after plug it again
I checked BIOS looking for some USB power options - there is no such settings. And 32 bit deployment works ok. So this is not a case. Looks for me like a problem with proper usb drivers for 64 bit. I download all drivers from HP website (driver pack and
drivers only for USB 3.0). We are using make and model matching in MDT - works ok for all the rest hardware models. Any idea how to troubleshoot it?

Not sure what's going on here. Is this a USB "Flash" drive or a USB "Hard Drive". There *Is* a distinction.
I *thought* that MDT would copy itself to the c:\minint\scripts folder to continue installation.
Next time, when you see this error, Press Shift-F10 to get into a cmd.exe prompt. Can you find litetouch.vbs on any of the drives? Does the USB Drive appear?
IF in fact, the USB Drive is not appearing after the 1st reboot, then you have a problem. Why did the USB 3.0 driver not install. Check the Driver Installation Logs to verify.

  • External Drive Help

Hi there, i backed up files to a Freecom external drive which i have linked up to my wireless base station. All was well under Tiger, but having upgraded to Leopard i can't access it.
    Basically:
When i select 'Go-> Connect to server', it asks for the address. That is fine, it accepts what
i type and also pops up with available folders on the drive.
However, when i then click one of those folders the machine seems to to just stop and freeze
    up after a few seconds.
Is it something to do with access rights on Leopard? How can i fix this, i am terrified to re-install software for the external drive in case it wipes all my work.
    Regards
    Andrew

Hi there, same problem - i just tried ethernet and using the setup assistant that came with the freecom drive i can view the folders on line e.t.c i.e the drive is recognised wirelessly through base station or with ethernet and is connected to.
However, It seems to be the mounting of any folders that is the new problem with Leopard...
Can anyone help? I'm really in trouble here. Everything was perfect until i went to Leopard...
    Thanks very much

  • HT1329 Use of ipod as external drive, help!!!

I got a new PC & used my ipod (after realising you could do this and there was space on my ipod) as a hard drive to transfer my itunes library to my new PC. It was far from straight-forward and I had to buy two lots of software to help me do this, as my library had loads of my own music in it (i.e. not just what was bought from itunes store). This seems to have worked now, and after almost 2 days of trying things out my itunes on my new PC is syncing with my ipod and transferred music library (I hope!). Only thing is, I now have half my ipod capacity as 'other' and I can't get rid of it! A third of it is, I think, my original files, and I have half of it as yellow 'other' (is this my library which I had backed up inot my ipod to use as an external drive to transfer??) and I want to delete it to get my space back, what can I do?

So restore the iPod as new or from a backup, then sync what you want to the device.

  • External Drive HELP ASAP

Hey my western digital mybook 500gb external drive randomly when i came back to my macbook pro it said it was removed and i look its plugged in. i tried unplugging and plugging back in and ther drive wont show on my mac. also ive tried restarting my mac and a few other little things. Why wont my hard drive show? did it crash? or can i recover it.? it is still on warrenty.

    Hi demarial;
Maybe in the future you will backup important data!
If your use of Tech Tool Pro does yield the results you need, you might consider download a demo copy of FileSalvage. After running the demo it will tell you what it can recover then you have to pay for it to actually recover the files for you.

  • ITunes library issues with external drive - HELP!

    Hey guys,
I just got the Time Capsule and am using it to store my iTunes library. I went to preferences>Advanced and changed the location of the iTunes Library to my time capsule HD.
The problem I am having is that every time I disconnect from the network iTunes defaults back to user/me/music/itunes and I have to redirect it and then click yes for "organize my library" and then it updates the library, blah blah...
This is very annoying, does anyone have any suggestions?

    Try this post;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Maybe the most useful hint for you is the last paragraph "If you move your library to an external drive, you'll need to power up and connect the drive before starting iTunes. If you don't, iTunes will prompt you to either locate the library or to create a new library (which will result in an empty library)."

  • Itunes music on external drive help

WHY? When I set the Adv prefs in iTunes and point it to my music which resides on an external drive (Time Capsule) ~ that (upon launch) if it can't see the drive on the network it decides to create the default "mac hd/users/itunes" folder!!!
Of course it remembers the "keep folders organized" and create mayhem .... MAYHEM!
If I put the HD alias in Startup Items, will it at least TRY to mount the disc, and then subsequently be connected at the time of iTunes launch???
This is a nuisance. It has caused my wife to import CDs multiple times. Redundantcy?! Bah!!!
    iTunes: OH NO!!!
Me: Interrupted? A quick network ping or search brings it right back into use!
iTunes: "Oh no! I've lost the song (that is currently PLAYING)!!! What do I do??? I know! Make the DEFAULT User folder!!!
    Me: Aaaaaahhhhhh!!!!

Thanks for your post! I used my wife's iMac to post the above rant...
Basically you've re-explained exactly what is happening. I have always pointed to external media, so I set up the iMac the same way.
Media and Library to me are the same things, but iTunes "Library" (.itl) file includes the prefs. (Which point to the external media collection of that .itl "user"... or they should, yes??)
When the drive sleeps, or isnt mounted, an iTunes launch is just being silly be jettisoning the prefs and going back to the ol' user/music/itunes folder nonsense, etc. It should pop up a dialog letting you know that the library is residing on a drive which cannot be found. (hundreds of in iTunes??? great!!!)
It also happens upon waking from a sleep, etc.
I'm just wishing it were a bit more robust and not so easily fussed up. Having someone remember to hold OPT key before launch each time ain't gonna be hapnin'...
Friends dont let friends post drumnk...
Now everything will be in "The Cloud" so... I'm not quite sure when the Cloud rains or if it's a sunny blue-sky day (ew... too Microsofty) that what the app will decide to do to your new CD that you bought at the concert last night and you're flying it into your library or media or cloud or whatever...

  • Can't access my mp3s from my external drive. help please!

    Hey,
So I've read most of the articles in Support but can't find an answer. I read this too : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449.
I'm running itunes 10.5.3 on my imac. I transferred my itunes music folder to an external drive because it was taking up too much space on my internal drive. Then I went into itunes preferences and changed the location of the folder to the external drive.
But I can't access tons of my mp3s now. When I click on a song in my library that it can't access, I get that explanation mark, and a statement asking me if I would like to locate the file. I locate it, and then I can listen to it.
And after I find that missing file for itunes, a window pops up and asks "Would you like itunes to use the location of "-----" to find other missing files in your library"? I select 'yes'. But then itunes can't find the missing files, even if they're in the same exact folder as the last one I found! It seems to me like this function is broken? And I have like 2,000 missing files! I even re-imported my itunes music folder back into my library. But that didn't work and now I have a ton of duplicates.
    Any suggestions?
    J

    I read this too : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449.

    That's where you went wrong.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • External drive died- need to get two ipod contents back

My wife's and my daughter's iTunes libraries were kept on the external drive because of the space issue with my MacBook Pro. It seems to have died and won't power up. Is there a way of getting their respective iPod contents back into new libraries once I have a new drive and/or create ones under their log in accounts ?

The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    iPod.iTunes Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If the iPods are set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that the iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. The iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use it without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep the iPods in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with the playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Library on External Drive Help

I store my library on an external hard drive.  When I upgraded to version 11, iTunes isn't seeing most of my library.  I've changed my preferences to the external hard drive but it still isn't seeing the enitire library.  It also only shows one of my playlists.  Any ideas?  I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise.

OK make sure you take note of the drives letter on the OLD pc as this is the letter you will have to change it too on the new PC
    On NEW PC
    1) Download and install the latest version of iTUnes and if you have an iPOd install the latest ipod updater here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    2) With ipod disconnected and iTunes closed, connect the external.
    3) Change the externals drive letter to the one it was on the old PC. Goto ( WIn XP ) Control panel>Admin Tools>Computer management>Disk Management. Rightclick the external drive and hit "CHange Drive Letter" and change it to what it was on the old PC.
    4) Goto My Music>iTUnes folder and delete "iTunes Library.itl"
    5) Open iTunes, goto File>Import and locate/import the "iTUnes Music Library.xml" file you have saved on the external drive
Now you should be up and running smooth

  • Transferring iTunes Library to an external hard drive - help needed

I recently moved my iTunes library (aka all of my 32 GB of music) onto an external hard drive so as to save space on my laptop, but I messed up somehow and now I can't add songs to my iPhone. The chain of events went something like this:
    1. I copied my iTunes library onto my external hard drive.
    2. I changed my iTunes library location (in the itunes settings) to it's new spot on the external.
    3. I deleted the songs off my laptop.
This worked fine at first, but then I think I opened iTunes with my external NOT connected and I got a blank library. I plugged in my external but my itunes was still blank. Then I decided I'll just add everything back to my itunes library. I did that, but I lost all my playlists and whatnot, but I didn't really care - all my music was there.
Now I just tried to add new music to my iPhone and it won't let me. When I try to turn manual music management it gives me an error saying "this iPhone is synced with another itunes library".
Is there some way I can retrieve my original itunes library from before I did all this stuff? Help much appreciated.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to choose a library, then select the copied iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
