External Drive Light Always On

Please bear with me if I'm not in the correct category but I've run out of research avenues. I own a Seagate FreeAgent 1 TB external drive for Mac (ST310005FJA105-RK). When I power up my laptop in the office (all laptops must be securely stored at night to avoid theft) the light (front logo & bottom base) on the external drive illuminates and never turns off. I'm not certain but I think it started happening after my OS 10.6.2 upgrade. Time Machine backups are still occurring but when this mode is engage the light pulses. Then when the backup is complete the light stays on. If I touch the drive it's warm and is constantly spinning inside. Am I just paranoid is this a concern?

Thank you. I did check with Seagate after running their diagnostics software. The tech wasn't very helpful. Their feeling was if it past the test then don't worry. I felt I had a better chance with an insightful thought by asking a more informed audience.

  • My external drive is always unmounted?

Hi. I have a 2TB external drive that I have been using for two years, without ever having any problems with it - until now.
Everytime I plug it in my Macbook Air, it doesn't show up my desktop, and when I go to Disk Utility it says that the disk is unmounted. Then I usually have to verify the disk once, and repair it twice to get it to show up on the desktop and to work properly, but if I eject it and plug it back in, the same thing happens again.
When I plug it in a Windows computer, it shows up immediately, without any problems - however, the last time I did this, a 1TB folder full of movies and tv shows was deleted from the drive. Also - the external drive is in an exfat format.
Does anyone know anything that I could do?

Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on desktop -> External disks

  • MSI P67A-GD65 hard drive light always lit

I built a new pc with this motherboard a few weeks ago and everything is great except for the hard drive light.  It stays dim 100% of the time and does show hard drive activity so i know it's working.  I switched the connector on the motherboard to see if it was a polarity issue, but then it doesn't work at all.  I even used a different LED that wasn't connected to my case and removed all the other connectors (power, reset, etc) and it still stayed dim.  Lastly, i removed all the SATA cables from the motherboard, all fan connectors with no luck.  I would appreciate any information on this, and if it's normal or if something is wrong and i should RMA the board.
PS - Bios version is 1.9.  I never updated it cause everything has been working as it should.

You should try the board out of the chassis. You may also want to try it in barebone conditions.
I tried that yesterday.  Took it completely out of the case and left everything else off the board except for the ram and it still does it.  Also used a separate LED to test that wasn't part of the case.  In all the years i've worked on pc's, i've never seen this before.  I guess at this point i'll have to live with it or buy another one and send this one back for RMA.  I contacted MSI and they replied back with a suggestion to update the bios.  This is going nowhere.  While it probably won't actually hurt anything, i didn't spend $1500 on a new system to have problems with the motherboard.
Can someone help me test by using their MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) board?  Disconnect JUST your power light from the motherboard to make sure no other light is interfering with the hard drive light, and see if it's still dimly lit at around 25% to 30% regardless if you're in the bios, or in windows.
Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point.

  • My late 2006 iMac stopped finding my back up drive.  I've tried rebooting but no good.  Tried unplugging the external drive and rebooting.  How do I tell my computer to find the external 500 GB dive that is plugged into it?

I have a Western Digital 500 gig external hardrive that I have been using successfully with Time Machine to back up my files.  A few weeks ago I noticed that the external drive light was ON but not moving back and forth indicating that it was working.  The light was now simply ON but not moving.  So I checked and sure enough Time Machine didn''t "see" it anymore.  When I tried to fix it, the drive is no longer on the list.  Nothing is on the list.  The external drive is not showing anywhere, including the desktop.  And when I tried to switch Time Machine on the list is empty and it wants to "look" at airport for a wi-fi type peripheral.  Help!  How do I get the iMac to realize it has an external drive plugged into it?  I don't even know why it worked when I first got it or why it stopped working.  I only know that Time Machine doesn't have it listed.

Open disk utility and check the external drive and repair it.  If that didn't fix the problem or if you are unable to see the drive in disk utility then the drive could be bad.

  • Itunes 8.0 - My ratings and play list are gone! External Drive

Itunes 8.0 - My ratings and play list are gone! External Drive
It has about one year I have been rating my songs and creating my play lists. I keep all my musics on a external drive. Always when I plug the drive I can play the musics list on the library with out a problem.
Now on this new update (8.0), when I click on the music, simply the Itunes don't find the music. And when I add to the library a music that was already there, it comes with NO RATING!
    Results:
    1) lost my ratings
    2) lost my play lists...I will have to build all again.
    Can some one Help Me?
    Thanks

Hi, usually iTunes stores data in 2 different folders:
one it's used to store your music files, the other stores your settings (playlists, ratings...). The first one can be stored wherever you want, the other, which contains the xml file with all your settings, is usually stored in My Documents / Music / iTunes Music. If you don't back up it or you replace it (for example doing a clean install of iTunes), you could lost all your informations. I suggest you to recover your PC from a backup (if available) or use a program to recover deleted files. Let me know if you need more help, goodbye

  • IMac won't boot with external drives attached

I am using iMac 27" Late 2013 model upgraded to mavericks 10.9.4. Two external drives are always attached with it, one is segate 3.5" 2TB USB 3.0 drive and another one is 2.5" usb 2.0 drive.
when i start my imac with external drives attached it won't boot up. Stuck at plain white screen after a startup chime, not even any apple logo or any progress circle appears. And i have to detach all of my drives to make it boot.
This problem arises after upgrading to mavericks. Already tried resetting PRAM, SMC and checked Startup disk and verify disk with disk utility.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External drive problem in lightroom

why won't my external drive light not light up in lightroom[The unit is on]

OK. It's good that you can see the drive in the Import Dialog.
    Do the following:
In your OS create a folder on the external drive and put a copy of any photo in there. In Win Explorer you can use the feature >Edit >Copy to folder.
Then in Lr open the Import Dialog and import this one copy of the photo. Select <Add> at the top center of the Import Dialog so that the photo does not get moved.
After this import Lr should display the drive with a green light.

  • Cant unmount external drive

    Hi there,
I use super duper to back up my system drive to an external drive.  I quit super duper and about a minute later the external drive light is lit red meaning the drive is busy.  I am not able to unmount or eject this drive.   The error is "An error occurred while trying to eject '<$drive_name>'"
What can I do to cleanly unmount my external drive?
    Cheers,
    Noah

Typically this sort of question is better answered on Superduper forums, as it's their software.
I suspect Spotlight is indexing the external drive, why it's busy and can't be unmounted.
So head to System Preference Spotlight and turn off indexing except for the boot drive, also change the name of the clone as OS X gets confused if there are two drives with the same name.
If after rebooting you can't unmount the drive, try this
Drive won't "unmount". First check for Spotlight or open programs using the drive/volume, reboot.
    >>>Force unmounting launch Terminal type diskutil list and press enter/return for a list of devices.
    >>>Take the Identifier and add here for disks: diskutil unmountDisk force Identifier and press enter/return.

  • External drive suddenly has strange icon

Never seen this before. Usually the external drives show an orange hard-drive icon and drive name on the desktop. I've got dozens of external drives. Always the same icon. Suddenly one of my drives, which I've been using quite frequently, and which has always had an orange icon like all the others, has come onto the desktop with an icon looking like one of those old portable zip drives.
I'm at a loss as to why. Or if it means I'm about to have something wonky happen to the drive.
    Any suggestions?
    Ben

Hi. You may be able to restore the icon by copying one of the others via the Get Info windows:
Open the Get Info windows for the drive with the wrong icon and a drive with the correct icon. Select the correct icon so that it is highlighted and do a Command(Apple)-C to copy it - then select/highlight the wrong icon in the Get Info window and do a Command(Apple)-V to paste.
You could check out the drive directory structure, etc. in Disk Utility > First Aid > Verify Disk - or with Disk Warrior
    http://alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
If S.M.A.R.T. Status is supported on the drive, DU or DW should report the status as 'Verified' - or not: "If the S.M.A.R.T. status for a disk shows "Verified," nothing is wrong with it. If you see "About to Fail" in red letters, you should back up the disk and replace it as soon as possible." - from DU Help.
If the Finder is experiencing widespread wierdness, you may have to delete the com.apple.finder.plist file in HD/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and then re-select your Finder Preferences. Good Luck.

  • External drives no longer show up - light is on but nobody home!

    Hey all,
Still using an old iMac G4 and it works great... 10.2.8
    (and ibook 10.3.9)
plugging in some Maxtor External drives and they don't show up (mount)
I hear them. The light is on.
Checking in disk utility shows that computer senses them and says I can repair permissions (have not tried that yet) but they never appear
on the desktop. These drives are more than 5 years old and haven't been used in about a year - my mistake. use it or lose it apparently.
If anyone can throw a life raft I'll grab it.
    thanks,
    Al

    Dale,
They don't show up in Disk Util.
    Nothing to click on.
When I plug them in I get a message saying do I want to initialize or ignore?
I am assuming initialize would erase everything but there is stuff on them so I don't want to erase.
    thanks,
    Al

  • How Do I Always Boot From An External Drive

I successfully installed Mac OS X 10.4.8 on an external hard drive. It boots successfully into OS X, but only if you press option on boot and select the drive or if you boot from the drive inside my Mac Mini and go to startup disk and select the external. Is there any way to just always boot from the external drive without doing anything? Thanks in advance for all of your help.
Mac Mini PowerPC Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If booting from a cold start doesn't work but restarting after selecting the drive does work, then most likely the drive isn't ready when the Mac is doing the cold boot.
Try turning the drive on several seconds before turning on the Mac.

  • I cannot seem to load raw images into LR 2.5.  I've been using this for years.  I always load from memory card, but it gives me an unknown error message.  I tried to load from camera, hard drive, & external drive and still will not work.  I checked import

I cannot seem to load raw images into LR 2.5.  I've been using this for years.  I always load from memory card, but it gives me an unknown error message.  I tried to load from camera, hard drive, & external drive and still will not work.  I checked import menu and nothing has changed.  I loaded the photos onto my tablet and images are fine, so do not feel it is the memory card.  Any thoughts?

The error message probably said "unsupported or damaged"
The T3 requires Lightroom 3.4.1 or later. You can either upgrade to a more current version of Lightroom (version 5.6 is the most recent) or you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAWs to DNG, which should import into Lightroom properly.

  • I have lightroom.  My photos are stored on an external disk drive with a backup disk.  With iCloud, will all of my photos go to the cloud?  Will I still need the external drives? Is the $9.99 per month for just one year or for always?

I am an amateur photographer and have lightroom.  My photos are stored on an external disk drive with a backup disk.  With iCloud, will all of my photos go to the cloud?  Will I still need the external drives? Is the $9.99 per month for just one year or for always?

If the iTunes database files are on that drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to it. The computer may need to be authorized to play protected content, and if the library contains rented movies, those won't play.
If not, import the content to an iTunes library.

  • Red light on external drive

I was preparing to copy some of my library files to an external hard drive. Somehow I clicked something and there was a little "poof" and now the computer fails to recognize the hard drive. Also a red light suddenly appeared on the external drive. I did a disk utility and "verified" the hard drive so I know that it is still "there". It's like I turned it off.
I know that the power is sufficient as I have used it many times; I have a Y shaped connector that goes to both USB ports.
How do I get the external drive to come back or wake up or get recognized?
    Thanks very much in advance!

Ah ha! It's just gone out of the list on Finder. If I reformat the way finder displays it appears...it's just not in the leftmost column.
So, it isn't an emergency. It's a formatting issue.
Any idea how to put it back??
    Thanks again!

  • I suddenly lost all my access to my songs.  I have them on an external drive.  How do I get iTunes to recognize my external drive as my library source like it always has been?

I was using my iTunes Library and it is now gone.  I have my songs stored on an external drive.  I checked the connections and they seem OK.  I can't get the iTunes screen to show the sync button nor find my library.  Does anyone have a suggestion?

Was the media solely on the external library?  If so, it is likely that iTunes was started at some point with the external drive unaccessible.  Simply point iTunes to the correct library location.  To do this, close iTunes.  Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.  When prompted to find library or create a new one, select the find option and point iTunes to where the iTuneslibrary.itl file is at on your computer (or external drive).
