External drive not letting go

I tend to turn on my external hard drive to backup my data at the end of my work day using Silverkeeper. When the backup is done, I try to eject the two partitions I've created on the drive so that I can turn it off.
Regularly, however, the system claims that one of the two partitions is busy and can't be ejected. This is after all backing up activities are complete and no applications are running.
Often, the external drive will indicate that it's being read constantly even though, once again, nothing's running on the machine. I've had to do a power off as I've lost control of the machine (the swirling ball is spinning) when I attempt to eject one of the partitions.
Any ideas what might be going on?
TIA,
David

What you might be seeing is spotlight trying to index your external drive. Depends on what file system are you using on the partitions, spotlight might be unable to write the index file and keep indexing it every time you connect the drives.
To stop spotlight from indexing them, first try adding the partitions to spotlight's exclusion list in System Preference. If this doesn't work, use terminal to create an empty file by typing:
touch .metadataneverindex
place this at the root of the partitions will stop any indexing, but you won't be able to search that partition at all. Note that the file is invisible so you may want to turn on show invisible files while moving and copying it.

    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
    Any suggestions.

Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

is their another way like to use my time capsule as an external drive not using time machine?thanks

You do not have to use Time Machine.. but the TC is hardly suitable for a NAS.. it has no means to back itself up and is relatively slow. Still that is up to you..
CCC or Superduper are good backup softwares .. and there are a number of others.

  • Firewire 800 external drive not found!

My power went out last night, so this morning my external drive is not on my desktop. It isn't read by my computer. I tried it on my other G5 and it reads it, but for some reason it won't show up on this one. Could my settings be screwed up? Please help! I'm not a mac genius yet.
    shane

    A. buy a UPS
    B. Unplug your G5, your FW cable, power to the FW case.
    C. Let sit for 15 minutes.
If it won't show up now, try either SMU/PMU reset, or reset nvram in Open Firmware.
FW seems to be very iffy when left on. I have found it best to unmount and power off when not in use (though FW800 seems better behaved). SATA doesn't have the problems fw does.
When you had it show on the 2nd G5, did you check it out with Disk Utility?

  • External drive not mounting after crash

I had the finder lock up on me and I had to force a restart.
At the time an external USB2 drive was plugged in. Since the forced restart the external drive is not mounting. It won't mount via USB2 or Firewire. It is formatted as Mac OS Extended.
Upon booting the computer notifies that it can't be read and asks to initialize, ignore or eject.
The system profiler sees it. Disk Utility sees it but it won't allow the options to verify or repair to be used.
Disk warrior, Drive 10, and Disk Rescue won't allow the drive to be fixed unless its mounted. In fact the drive won't even appear as an option in those programs without mounting.
So what do I have left to try?

After trial and error and moving the drive around to various enclosures I had Disk Utility open up the options to verify and repair.
It wouldn't actually fix it or go through the whole process of fixing it but that was enough to let a boot from the Disk Warrior CD see the drive as an option.
I only recovered about 60% of what was originally on it after DW redid the directory but it was at least something.
One question though what sort of issues could my boot drive's directory have that would effect the external ones? Is the corruption the fault of the internal drive?
I ask because although I've been assured that it will work fine I am running a 160G drive in a machine that only sees the first 128GB as the boot drive. I am not 100% positive that won't have some side effects but everyone around here seems to tell me its all good and that I shouldn't worry about that. Its this belief that makes me use the external drive as my torrent media drive since there is so much more reading and writing being done to it.

  • SOLUTION - USB 3.0 External Drives Not Mounting on MBP Retinas - SOLUTION

So I have been having the same problem as everyone else who has issues with USB 3 external hard drives not mounting on their MBP Retinas. My friend told me to try unplugging the USB cord and plugging it back in instantly (like in half a second, so as to not let the power turn off on the drive).  I had my doubts but then I tried it just now, and MY DRIVE MOUNTED.
GO TRY IT AND SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU!
UPDATE: I am using a powered external drive (Seagate Backup Pro 3TB).  Not sure if this will work with bus powered drives, but I think it might, as my friend might have been using a bus powered drive.
Also, I just bought two Hitachi TOURO 750GB bus powered portable drives (7200rpm/USB 3.0) and they mounted perfectly without problem as soon as I plugged it in for the first time.

Did you unplug the USB cable from the computer or from the external drive? This fix has been posted here previously but it was reported that the cable had to be unplugged from the device, not the computer. If the cable was unplugged from the computer instead, the fix didn't work.

  • External drive not working on iMac, but works on Macbook Pro

I have read a few different threads relating to this question, with no real luck of a permanent solution.
I have an external drive that works perfectly on my Macbook Pro. My new iMac will not show the drive though (both with the current software).
The drive itself shows a power light and appears to be running/powered by the USB port.
    I have tried several ports.
It does not show in Disk Utility.
The option in settings is set to show the drive in finder and on the desktop (I have checked this).
I have tried restarting the iMac.
I have also had this problem after the iMac has been turned off overnight, and turned on in the morning (and then plugging the drive in after powering on).
I resolved this issue once by turning off the iMac, removing the power cord for a few minutes, and powering it up again.
I don't think it should be something I have to do every time I would like to use the drive though - It would be very irritating if I had to do that every time.
    Any advice or options here?
The iMac has only been used since Christmas day, 2014 - and has had this problem since that day (in which i solved it by the turn off/unplug thing).
Sorry, I am aware this question has been asked a lot. I haven't come across anything that is giving me a long-term solution to this problem.
    Happy new year!

Some USB-powered drives are just crappy. They require too much current from the USB and cause the bus to fail or the bus can't provide enough power for it to fully spin up. You can often hear or feel them clicking periodically (like once a second) as they are trying to spin up.
If this is the case, a powered Hub, external power supply, or Y-cable will be necessary to consistently use the drive.

  • External Drive not showing up in Finder? Can't access files?

My blue 1TB external WD Passport Drive (whose name is Ralph and who holds all kinds of precious things that I love and can't lose) isn't showing up on my Finder screen. Whenever I connect him, his light turns up and blinks as usual, but I can't access anything on him. I don't even get an error message when I disconnect him without ejecting. I've tried using different USB ports and different cables, but it's not helping. I've also tried connecting him to different computers (3 different macs and 1 Windows 8 PC), but NOTHING.
I've been trying everything the past few days to get him to work. He shows up on Disk Utility occasionally. I've tried verifying and repairing him through Disk Utility, but it says that the verification could not be completed, or that it can't repair him. It tells me to back up as many files as I can and then restore him, but I can't access the files to back them up in the first place. Also, the partition name seems to have changed to 'disk1s3', which appears greyed out on the Disk Utility screen.
In regards to mount point, it says that the disk isn't mounted. I tried mounting it by right-clicking it on Disk Utility, but the mount failed.
I tried restoring him onto another 1TB WD drive (Oscar), but that failed too.
How can we help Ralph? I don't believe in much, but I believe in Ralph.
And that's why we have to help him.

You can call Western Digital, but most likely they will give you the advice they gave another user recently to send it to Drive Savers for  data recovery. Drive Savesrs quoted him a price of $999 to just recover his photos from the drive.
There is software you can try. Both have demos.
    FileSalvage $90
    Data Rescue $99
DiskWarrior might be another option you can try. There is no demo. $99.99 http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
    Drive Savers
    http://hard-drive-recovery-services-review.toptenreviews.com/drive-savers-review .html
In the future, you need to backup your important data to another external drive just for situations like this. Another option is to use a service like DropBox to upload files. This is mirrored on your drive so it's not always the best option.

  • Reinstall of OS: iTunes Library on external drive not recognized

I've always had my iTunes library on my external drive. Now that I reinstalled my OS iTunes will not open the library. I've navigated to the correct library using the advanced preferences but that's not doing it. I've tried discarding the existing library in the music folder. Can't seem to find the answer.
    Thanks

    JS,
I had some trouble following macmenno's instructions, but have had almost complete success. If you DO have your original itunes library file, this should work for you too.
    Background, my situation:
My harddisk was failing but warned me, so i copied the ENTIRE itunes folder to an external drive. The iTunes folder includes the "itunes library" file, the music folder, and the xml file. This was suggested in a book i have on iLife as the best way to backup itunes to an external HD to preserve playlists, et al. But the book failed to say how to copy the folder back if needed.
So the first time i naively just copied the entire folder back to the imac (new HD) but itunes failed to "find" it, even though it was exactly where i had deleted the equivalent default (empty) files/folder. Playing around i managed to get itunes to find the music but not the playlists and ratings...i.e., it was not finding the library file.
    Macmenno's instructions:
I started all over: With Itunes closed, I deleted all three items from the itunes folder: the library file, music folder, xml file. to be safe, i also emptied the trash since itunes seemed to be following the files. But i left the itunes folder in place, albiet empty. Per macmenno's instructions, i then copied ONLY the itunes library file and the xml file from my external HD to the imac itunes folder. I then opened itunes, checked the preferences to be sure it was pointing in the right direction. I then dragged the Music Folder from the ext-HD and dropped it on the library icon in the itunes program window.
That worked. i have my playlists, ratings, comments, et all.
Only problem is i now have duplicate listings of all music songs -- one with an exclamation point that doesn't play (apparently came from my itunes library file before i dropped in the songs), one that does play.
So macmenna, if you are still with us, how can i delete the 3,000 song titles with exclamation points? I tried to click on the column head to sort them all together, then block-mark and delete... but apparently we can not sort on that column head.
Or did i miss something in your instructions?
Thanks. and good luck to you JS.

  • New Toshiba 3tb external drive not recognized at startup WIn 7

My new toshiba 3tb external drive (with wall wart power) is not recognized at start up (Win7). The message I get is that it is a USB storage device but can not be used until it is formatted (I already moved files to it). If I plug it in after start up it's fine and shows up as a toshiba storage device. I've used the 2.0 and 3.0 ports and it is the same problem (it has wall wart power). I have never encountered this problem with any other usb storage device  (an iomega 1tb and a WD 500gb) always plugged in and recognized at start up.
    Thoughts?

Please provide your complete model number of your system.
By doing so, we will be in a better position to provide you assistance.

  • My Passport External Drive Not Recognized

I bought a MacBook last week. I also bought a MyPassport for Mac external drive. I connected it to the USB port and installed the software. The icon for the drive displayed in the upper right hand corner. I received a message that there was a firmware update for the drive. After obtaining the download and installing it, the drive icon no longer displays. Time Machine used to display the drive, but does not anymore. Finder does not show it as a device. The software for the drive does not show the device either. Other USB devices work great. I plugged the drive to the old Windows PC and it recognized it. I must have changed a setting or something during the firmware update. Suggestions?

    Shteeg wrote:

    Installed the software? Please explain.
At this point, I think you need to format the Passport for Mac with disk utility. Your post sounds like you took a product that was Mac ready and windowed it.

  • AirPort Extreme External Drive Not Recognized

I have an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac and am hooking up a Seagate 1.5TB external hard drive (USB 3.0 with backward compatability) to the USB port but it is not being recognized by Airport Utility. Does this need a power source? What am I doing wrong?
I did reformat the external drive from NTFS to be Mac compatible (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and when I plug the external drive into my MacAir, it shows up and is completely usable. Once I plug into the AirPort Extreme though, it goes into the netherland and I can't find it at all.
    Help?

I have the HGST Touro USB3 drive that works fine with apple airport routers.
I did try and establish a sort of database.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5912861?tstart=0
Contributions are sadly lacking but it already shows.. some work some don't.. some work with hubs some don't.
    To OP..
As per Bob's comment.. you are now in Limbo.. since you don't know if the problem is the hard disk or the usb hub. And it is possible either or both are at fault.
Look at OWC as they seem to specialise in external drives for Mac/Apple world. They sell hundreds of different USB drives.. I recommend you ring and ask their sales staff .. explain the problem and what you want.. a disk that works with model xyz airport.. like the Apple document show.
Even from Australia we buy stuff from OWC as they have first class knowledge of apple systems. And if you look for specials they are excellent.. !!

  • ESata external drive not recognized on MacPro 2,1

Hi. I installed Newertechnologys MacPro "Quad Xeon" eSATA extender cables from OWC into my MacPro 2,1. They connect directly to the logic board. I have tried connecting to OWC Mercury Elite-Al Pro Qx2 external drive bay and also tried an Eagle enclosure with a eSata port. No joy. Both drive bays are recognized on Firewire and usb, just not on eSata. The previous owner had used one of the logic board ports for an optic drive. Still had the cable attached to the port. I have tried multiple eSata cables from both ports. Am I missing something or are the ports bad? I see nothing in system profiler that would indicate that the ports even exist. Thanks.

It makes sense that you cannot Hot Swap. You are not actually converting to eSATA (as you would with an added PCIe card) you are simply extending the cables (that Apple put there for INTERNAL drives) out the back of the machine.
It also makes sense that these cables show up on the Serial-ATA, or SATA Bus.
