External Drive On Network

What i want is for the library on one computer's external drive to show up when the "music" tab under "library" is selected on another computer on my wireless network.
I have two computers on a wireless network. I want to have the second computer just use the music folder which is on an external drive attached to the first. I have network shareing enabled. I have also set the "itunes music folder location", on the second computer, to the path, to that external drive, over the network by using edit/preferences/advanced/itunes music folder/ change/ and then selecting that path, and that didn't seem to work.
Am i missing something?
Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.
TIA

If you set your library folder to the external harddrive you may still have to add all the songs allready in the folder.
Make sure you uncheck "Copy songs to my itunes folder" before you do it and recheck if you want to do so afterwards (its in the advanced settings)
Then you just add your library folder to your library.

  • Can't See All Folders of External Drive on Network

I recently got my first Mac - a beautiful MacBook, which I love. I switched from a WinXP system. I have loads of photos and iPod videos on an external drive (fairly new), and music on a separate external drive (both are USB). Both are connected to a desktop G5 system in one room of my house, and we're using a wireless network to see everything.
My Mac's iTunes sees all the music fine, so that's not a problem. However, the other drive... it's seen, and I can get to the pictures (normal pix from my cameras), but the Mixed Media folder, which contains the iPod videos, appears as that grey, glass-tv-screen-looking icon and won't let me do anything with them - On one hand, I want to import my iPod videos to my new iTunes library, and on the other hand, I want to be able to manage my photos on the Windows side (using Parallels) because since I was a WinXP user all these years, I have Photoshop for Windows. But I need my iPod vids. Anyone know what I need to do to fix this?

    Do you mean like this?
I'm not an expert on this but I get these files now and again with my job where clients upload fonts to our FTP from a PC. These are files that OS X doesn't recognize or doesn't have the software to open it. It's probably because your drive was formatted for PC. Do the iPod video files have a file extension at the end of the filenames such as .mp4 or .mpeg (or whatever the correct extension is for iPod video, mp4 I think)? If not and in my experience, adding the correct extension to the file usually enables OS X to recognise and open the file. Try it with one of your files and see if it opens.

  • Share external drive with network PCs?

    Hi all-
Figured I'd ask here as there are probably more people with an interest in sharing external drives...
Anyway: I'm on a network, but need to set up a dedicated hard drive to share with 1 other person with a PC. The drive will hold all kinds of working files, and we need to be able to open and edit documents from this drive.
Been reading around, but for some reason this task seems harder than I thought it would be...
What's the best way to do this? If necessary, we can set up  a drive on his computer.
    Thanks!!
    Andrew

    Hi Linc-
    thanks for the help.
Unfortunately, I'm not really following - and still have questions -
    1) Does the external drive need to be formatted NTSF?
    2) Can the drive be connected to either computer?
    3) What do you mean by the "credentials of a user on the server" ?  This sounds like I need to give my credentials to the other guy I want to share the folder with... that's not going to happen. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.
Not sure if I'm on the right track here..
    cheers

  • Cannot mount external drive on network when no user logged in

We have a few workstations on our network that have multiple accounts for users in order to preserve preferences, etc. An external hard drive attached to the each workstation, holds work done on that station by the different users. When all users are logged out, the external drive does not appear as a mountable device when trying to log into the workstation from another computer; only the internal drives are seen and mountable.
Is there a way to make the external drive visible and available for mounting over the network when no user is logged in? The external drive is set to ignore permissions for that drive in the get info window.
Additionally, when a user is logged in to the workstation and someone tries to log in over the network to access the external drive, the drive is sometimes available over the network and other times not. What causes this inconsistency?
    thx, j

You really want to format it HFS+ wiyh GUID Partition scheme to ensure your data transfers correctly...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(On IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Not sure if that'll make it see it or not, but your data will be better. Besides, you should be able to install to that then & maybe boot from it to ease matters.

  • Trouble sharing external drive on network

I have an 8 TB external drive connected to an old G5 on my network. There are 5 MacPros connected to the network -- all OS10.8. I want to be able to drop files onto the external drive for sharing/storage. File Sharing is on, but I cannot write to the disk, even from the G5 it is connected to. The "owner" of the external disk is logged in on the G5. What to do?? Thank you.

I tried that but still can't see the external drive. All I can see are the G5's public folder and shared folder.
Another thing - the owner of the drive is on a standard account (not Admin). Does that make a difference? Thanks.

  • Can't See External Drive on Network

I want to share an external hard drive between two or more computers. My old hard drive (LaCie) just showed up on the network; however, the new (My Book) does not automatically appear. Several people have mentioned Sharepoints as the solution. When I open the Sharepoints, I don't have any idea what I am looking at or what I should be looking for. Can someone please provide me detailed, step-by-step instructions about how to use Sharepoints to share a hard drive among Macs?

Please contact the developer of Sharepoints or visit their website for assistance with their product. You may need to also contact the manufacturer of your external drive for tech support. These discussions only provide user-to-user support for Apple products.
Also you need to provide more extensive information on your network configuration.

  • Permissions locked on external drive when networked. But now when local.

Here's my problem. Running the iTunes library from an external drive, and it's been running fine for months and months on the home network. Just bought a new aluminum iMac and suddenly permissions on the disk are screwed up. When the ext. disk is plugged into the new iMac permissions are fine, read and write. When plugged into AEBS there are only two entries under permissions: (unknown) which has read and write permissions, and 'everyone' which shows 'no access'.
Can someone suggest a way to change the permissions that a networked drive has as opposed to a non networked drive, and why is there a difference:
    Thanks.

    why is there a difference:
Leopard uses ACLs which which replaced posix permissions. ACL's are extendable.
POSIX permissions if they were applied to an external drive they are ignored when disconnected from the computer that set them when plugged into another device.
ACL's extendable so they are not lost when the drive is plugged into another device.
If you want more detailed information on this google for ACLs vs POSIX.
So your drive was plugged into your new iMac, the iMac applied ACL permission to it. So it messed with its original permissions.
Try plugging the drive back into the new imac give everybody in the permission read/write access, Then plug the drive back into your AEBS.

  • Sharing external drive over network - problem

    Hey guys,
I searched the forum, but nothing posted to other threads helped.
I want to share a LaCie external USB drive over my network. It consists of two macs: a mac mini and a macbook running OSX 10.4.9.
The external drive is formated in FAT32. I enabled sharing in the system pref. but I don't see it when trying to connect. I installed SharePoints and shared it from there, still nothing. I tried connecting using the "afp://..:" stuff, but I get an error message, saying I cannot connect.
    Got some ideas?

    Thanks for your reply
Did you use the little "Show File System Attributes" yet?
    Yep, it's r&w
Did you use the enable Windows(smb)Sharing to Shared?
    Yes
    Did you add Users yet?
Yes, my username which i use to connect is added.

  • Recognizing external drives on network

I just set up my new MacBook and it does not recognize external drives on my network. Any suggestions?

    Hi Mark,
There are a couple of rudimentary things you can do. Firstly, check to make sure your HD is set at 'OSX extended (journaled)' in the disc utility. The next thing would be to run the disc utility on your HD and your externals, iE, permissions repair and verification. Also check your Finder preferences to see what is checked to be displayed in the side bar. External drives and CDs may be unchecked.

  • Setting up USB External Drive to Airport Extreme Base Station

I've attached an External Hard Drive to my AEBS. My base computer is connected to the AEBS via Ethernet Cable and can see the external drive under Networked Drive however it shows up twice as Drive Y and Drive Z both showing the exact same capacity.
My desktop computer is running windows vista, and my laptop is also running vista. My Laptop connects to the AEBS wirelessly. The laptop does not see this External Hard Drive. How do I get my laptop to recognize this drive? Shoule my external hard drive display with two different drive letters, or should it only appear as one? I've not had much luck using this feature of the airport extreme and was the basic reason i purchased the AEBS

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme will support drive formats of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and FAT32. NTFS is not supported, so that might explain some of your difficulties.
What feature did I invoke that automatically established a "third" drive? Where is it established on the physically formatted Mac drive? Does the format of Appleshare just indicate how the partition is accessed?
Not sure about this. When I format a drive as Mac OS or FAT 32, I see a single drive when accessed from the Finder.

  • How to move a large iphoto library from one external drive to another

Hi all (my first ever post to a forum!)
I have a large iphoto library (379 GB) on an external drive (Lacie 1TB w/usb 2.0) and want to move it to a another ethernet connected external drive (LaCie Network Space 2) so I will be able to access it from other computers.
Moving it with drag and drop or copying is calculated to take 66 day's!
Wander if that could be explaned with the fact that these are around 70.000 individual pictures/files, and if it could be speed up by first compressing the library.
Wander if anyone can shere their experience on that? (what software to use or?)
    I have an 21.5 inch, mid 2010 iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 with 12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3).
I also have the new Macbook Air (1.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.6GHz - with 3MB shared L3 cache).

iPhoto needs to be connected to the computer you are using it from via a sired connectin both for speed and also for data reliability
THe copy estimate is often way off - let it run and see - it will probably drop a lot quickly
Compressing would not help (assuming you shoot JPEG) since the JPEGs in the library are alread highly compressed

  • Potential external drive conflicts?

I'm trying to get an external drive connected to my iMac, but is intermittent and may be running into a drive conflict with a Network drive I have from the same manufacturer..
I have a Network drive (Western Digital My Book World 2TB - based on the size, I suspect it has 2x1TB drives in it) but too slow for working on video with iMovie. So purchased another WD drive 1TB (a Caviar Black 1001FALS), put it in a drive enclosure (Vantc NexStar 3) so I could get a Firewire 800 connection.
When first connected, worked like a charm. showed up, formatted the drive with the Mac, copied some files to it. Deleted files from it. Started moving iMovie files to it.
I came back 1/2 hour later to find the icon gone from my desktop and unable to get it back. Tried other cables, (firewire 400, USB, etc.) Rebooted the Mac. Rebooted the external drive, the network drive, etc.
Ended up taking the drive out and swapping out the drive for another drive - worked great - again. switched back to the WD 1TB drive and no luck.
Took the drive to the store I bought it from and asked if there was a problem with the drive - negative. Diagnostics were all fine.
brought it back and put it all back together. worked again. This time I noticed the network drive was not working. So, rebooted the network drive. As it was booting, I saw the external drive disappear again. Again not finding the right sequence to get it recognized again.
shut down the Mac and both drives. let sit for a while. rebooted the Mac. Then rebooted the external drive (1TB) and it showed up. Rebooted the Network drive and both were live for a while. Seemed stable. (Started moving files again.)
Came back again a little later and the External drive is gone again. And trouble trying to get it recognized again.
    Any ideas MOST welcome!!

Hi, I had a similar issue with a WD ext HD..I tried a different connecting cable (wd/iMac-heavier gauge)Works like a charm..
Make sure it has the little resistor fitted...

  • How to have three Windows laptops share one iTunes library stored on a networked external drive?

We just replaced our one desktop PC with three laptops.  Each laptop wants to access the same iTunes library, which now resides on an external drive connected to the network via our router.  How can this be done, and if one laptop adds a file to the library, will the other two see it?

    Tom DePrenda wrote:
I used the consolidate library feature and it moved all the music to the appropriate iTunes folder on the Share.
    Good!
I have the Vista laptop pointing to the Share for the iTunes Media folder location.
    Good!
The question is how do I add the files to her library?
Go to your File menu and use the command Add Folder to Library. When the dialog comes up, point it to the Music folder in the Share area. But read on first...
Also do I keep the boxes checked "Keep iTunes Media folder organized"
You must turn off the "Keep..." option. Otherwise, when one of you changes a tag, iTunes will re-"organize" and the other person's iTunes will lose the link.
The "Copy..." option should also be turned off. As you add new music, put it where you want it. Then you must "Add File to Library" from each iTunes.

  • How do I use time machine to backup to external drive on other machine on network

I have 2 x McPros, 2 x iMacs and 2 x MacBook Pro all integrated in the same home network. I have a DroboPro Network which can only be recognised as a Shared device by one MacPro only. There are 2 DroboPro 8 Bay RAID devices attached via Firewire to one MacPro.
With Mavericks how can I ensure that
    a. The networked Drobo can be seen by all computers as a shared device (it is connected via Ethernet to central Gigabit switch)
    b. That, failing the networked Drobo sharing, how can I ensure all computers on network will always have access for Time Machine backups using the DroboPro attached via Firewire to the one MacPro.
Many thanks, it's probably right under my nose.
    Darrin

Time Machine will only back up internal and directly connected external drives. It will not back up a network attached storage device.  You'll have to use some other software to back up the NAS.
