External Drive Problems

I finally got a great deal on a Mac Pro since my dealer senses something new coming our way. So this means moving everything from the MDD to the new machine.
Six months ago I started planning for a move such as this by installing a SATA card and drive into the MDD thinking that all I'd have to do, when I finally purchased a MP, is pop it into the new machine and continue working. Part of this has worked out and part not.
The drive (Seagate 320gb, 7200, 16mb cache running Leo 10.5.1) went in with only a few bugs. Had to wipe the factory drive, so that there wouldn't be a startup conflict, then I used that one as a Time Machine drive. The only oddity is that PS (CS3) says that it's locked (?). I unlocked it in Get Info and that doesn't seem to take, it's still brings up up the same message about being locked. Anyone had this happen? I can probably get around this by a fresh install, but I thought I'd ask about it since I'm posting.
The main thing that's bugging me is the fact that I cannot connect any external enclosures to this machine whether it's FW or USB. The drive that I'm attempting to connect is an ATA (Seagate 160gb) drive that was in the MDD running Tiger. I need access to this for all the old jobs on it, which take up about 120gb. I've tried both USB and FW enclosures, setting the drive to Master and Cable Select, connecting via both crossover cable and regular ethernet cable from one machine to another and also tried Target Disk Mode (start up with T key) with the drive back in the MDD. All were unresponsive. I updated the MP's system to the latest (10.5.1) and zapped the PMU, this didn't help either. What does it take to get this drive to mount on the MP? I know that the MP is a new machine to me, but come on; I can't recall any machine or version of OS X giving me such a problem.
Edit in: I can't recall if the enclosures have Oxford chipsets, but I highly doubt they do. These were read fine with all my machines (G4's and a G5), is the MP more picky about this requirement?
Thanks for any light you may shed,
Tony

Hi Dan,
Lets see if I can answer your questions without confusing you (and myself) more.
"To help us understand what you did, the Seagate that was in the MDD set to the sata card was used as your boot drive in the MDD?"
Kinda. Although I loaded Tiger then Leo, along with most of my wares, I never completely switched over from the other internal drive (ATA) that was running Tiger. I did boot it now and then to run updates and what-not.
"you could have partitioned the Seagate and put each on a separate partition to be able to use to boot both the MDD & MP. Did you set it up this way, because a apm will not boot a guid system."
Unfortunately I did not set it up this way, yet the system boots fine. It is a bit buggy as far a PS not launching completely.
BTW, "APM"? Apple Power Mac?
"Anyway explaining how you set the Seagate up will help."
As far as set up the only other thing I can recall is Journaled HFS+ I believe (I'm not at home right now to know for sure).
"Also what SATA card was used?"
Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA
"The Seagate 160gb is still bootable when its in the MDD?"
Yes, it's running today.
"And if there is 120gb of jobs on a 160gb hd then I can see there might be a slight problem getting to the information."
I just called my wife and she said that it says 140gb used and 8gb available. Why a slight problem getting to the info? Is that an oxymoron?
What I might have to do is purchase another SATA (320gb) drive and put all the jobs on that for now while the 160 is firewired to the MDD. Then pop that drive into the MP and use it for Jobs only.
Also, in the MP, wipe the main drive (that was in the MDD) and do a fresh install of the OS unless a "Clean Install" does the trick, which of course will save me time installing my programs. Opinion? Don't want to have to go this route, but also don't want more problems later. I've been in this game long enough to know better.

  • Serious external drive problems after installing Mavericks

OK, so now I am seeing multiple external drive problems. Here is my setup: A GTech 4TB drive connected to MacBook Pro via Firewire, formatted of 2 partitions of 2TB each (called GT1 and GT2). This is then daisy chained to two WD drives of 2TB each, called WD1 and WD2.
After installing Mavericks everything worked fine (in fact I have an amazing speed increase). However, after restarting my machine this morning I have the following issues:
The GTech is now a single partition called MyBook (obviously a hangover from the WD drives. I suspect the WD drive managment software) with NO data files. Interestingly it shows the following USED 1,106,870,272 bytes (1.11 GB on disk). This suggests that one of the partitions has disapeared completely.
Whilst WD 1 launces ok, WD 2 causes the Finder to relaunch whenever selected, meaning I can't get to the files. I remember having this problem before when I upgraded to SL, and it having something to do with hidden files that needed to be deleted via the terminal. However, I have searched the web and can't find the solution again.
Given that WD 1 and 2 are my backups of GT 1 and 2, then I now have a situation where I cannot access my primary or backup files for GT 2. Very impressive - not!
Can anbody remember the hidden file solution for the finder relaunch?
Can anybody help me get back my GT1 and 2 partitions (as they have the latest work on them)?

FIrewire & Thunder bolt drives are having issues with Mavericks, avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.
many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
    Technicians are looking into it.
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a very long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.
Recommend anyone DO NOT ATTACH any WD MyBook externals (firewire, thunderbolt or otherwise).
I dont have same to test, so I dont know if the problem is in the firmware on the SATA bridge or if its a problem with the WD software

  • Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 external drive problems

I recently upgraded from a MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 to a MacBook Pro Retina 15" (early 2013).  I have a Drobo and two Seagate 4TB external drives, all connected via Firewire 800.  So, I added a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter and, it seemed, life was good.
I keep my large iTunes Movie and TV show collection on the Drobo.  Since transitioning to the new MacBook, I have had a number of issue with watching movies on my Apple TV 3.  Randomly, and periodically, the movie appears to be corrupted - the audio track skips/loops and the image is horrible macroblocked, as if the file is damaged.  When I check the movies on the Drobo, opening it with Quicktime on the MBP, it plays just fine at the same spot it appeared damaged on the Apple TV 3.
A second symptom is this: I can no longer re-encode video with Handbrake with the source and target files on the Drobo - it gets some portion of the way through and it just stops, leaving the video partially encoded; again, at random locations/offsets into the video and not the same spot twice.
My initial thought is that connection to the Drobo is dropping out and coming back, on its own, but long enough to cause the above problems.
Is anyone else seeing this issue or something related when using the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter with large drives?
    Thanks, in advance.

Update: I exchanged the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and the issue persists. I have a Drobo that I used with my previous system, a PowerMac G5, and never had any issues like this.
It does not matter what software I use. But at some point video playback will suddenly become garbled. If I start the video from the beginning, sometimes the garbled video will start sooner but never later. A restart temporarily resolves the issue. If I copy the file to the local hard drive the video will play back garbled. This is indeed a very strange issue. The issue behaves like a bandwidth bottleneck.
I was having this issue prior to upgrading to Mavericks.

  • Moving Itunes library back to desktop from external drive-problems

I had moved my itunes library to an external HD becuase I did not have enough space on my desktop. I recently upgraded my desktop and tried moving my itunes library back. I did not go too well. After several tries I set itunes to keep the library on the external drive since I did not delete it. Now when I open itunes it can't find the location for 90% of my music. I hope the application did not delete the library on the external drive. I don't think it did since the file size has not changed. How can I set this up so my songs are on my desktop and can be accessed by itunes? Any help would be appreciated.

I had used that article and followed it exactly but I am still having problems. I moved my library back to the external drive, all of my songs are there but itunes has to be directed to the songs to find them.

  • External Drive Problem - Rampant Issue?

I've been searching the Internet for a day now and I see postings all over the place with the same questions and no real answers. I have a 1st Gen iMac G5 running 10.4.6. I have an external drive (the original HD in a SATA->Firewire enclosure) that has worked flawlessley since I had my logic board replaced under the extended Apple warrenty debacle regarding bad capacitors. Just 2 days ago, the drive become unmountable and all of the data disappeared. Drive Utilities won't recognize it, DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro 4 similarly won't help. Figuring the drive had just upped and died, I picked up a Maxtor 300GB drive and put it in the enclosure. Same thing. It mounts, but drops whenever I try to write to it. Neither Backup nor Retrospect can complete a backup to the drive. Other Firewire devices (iSight, 2nd Gen iPod) work fine and System Profiler says the FireWire ports are functional. I tried using Backup and the drive in question (the Maxtor) to backup my G4 PowerBook Ti and it worked flawlessly. Clearly it's an issue with the iMac. I've seen similar postings here, on MacFixit, MacOSXHints, etc. and have yet to see a plausible explanation. I'm open to ideas. I'm not comfortable having this iMac, which has most of my important files, unprotected by backup as it has proved flaky in the past.

    Matt,
These problems have been cropping up long before the iMac G5. Read this short post by member Donna Thomas to avoid getting too negative about the situation.
For some users, the use of more than one firewire port at a time can initiate the problem. Something to do with power draw vs the limits of the power supply, I think. I'd recommend trying a PRAM reset, and also a SMU reset (this is performed differently for your model G5 than it is done for the other iMacs): SMU reset instructions (just ignore the title of the article).
While you're booting from your install disc to access Disk Utility to perform Disk Repair, or using the Disk Utility from your Applications/Utilities folder to perform Permissions Repair, or whatever other utilities you're using, at least once shut down and then cold start rather than restart. It used to be, and I think still is, that these are different processes for a Mac, and it just might contribute to recovering the use of the external drive on your Firewire port.

  • Multiple external drive problems, both USB and Esata

Everything worked well in Tiger on my first gen MBP. Since i switched to Leopard and now Snow, and a new UNI MBP in december 08 I have so many external drive issues.
USB drives just disappear and power off (from the system not electrical) for no reason, mostly when connected to USB hubs. I've tried various hubs including the powered ones. But as soon as i go over two USB devices in the provided ports my problems start.. It feels like not enough juice is getting through those ports on my MBP. I never have a problem if i just connect 2 devices into the MBP, but it's not enough (i have 5x1tb external drives).
Also the same with the express34 slot.. Everything was fine under Tiger and my old MBP, But now i get the grey wall of death so many times when connecting 2x esata 1TB drives. The system is so unstable with multiple drives both USB and. I'm currently working as a pro Photographer on assignment in Asia and these stability are starting to become a big problem.
God forbid i'm even considering a switch back to windows for reliability, (yes, i did use the words windows and reliability in the same sentence)
Does anybody else experience problems with multiple drives through leopard/snow leopard via Apple notebooks? I would love to hear some users experiences and hopefully find a solution to my problem.. In every other way the system works like a charm.
I will post in 2 forums because i'm not sure if software or hardware related.
    Thanks, any help is appreciated.

    @ Gregory
All my drives are 3.5" HD's all with external power cables along with a mains powered USB hub. Sorry, i didn't state that clearly in the original post (i thought the hint of all drives being 1TB was a dead giveaway:)).. However, this still doesn't explain the same behaviour of the 2x1TB esata drives which actually work well if no external USB drives are connected. Sorry i'm not technical but does the expresscard slot share any bridge, bus or power connectivity with the USB slots??
I'll try this SMC reset that S.U mentioned...
Thanks for everyones help and ideas so far.

  • Capturing to new external drive - problem

    Hi,
I just got a new 500gb Seagate external drive to use as my capture scratch. I'm trying to capture to it and all of my footage is coming out really choppy. If I capture it to my internal drive, it works perfectly fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem, or what I could do about it? I'm using FCP 4 with OS 10.4.10. Any help would be appreciated.

Although it may not be a factor in your capture situation, I noticed that you said you are running FCP v. 4 with OSX 10.4.10. I believe FCP 4 was optimized for OSX 10.3. and Quicktime 6.
You might want to avoid future capture and edit problems by reverting back to the systems and apps versions proven to work best with your version of FCP.

  • System crash - now external drive problem

    Hi,
I recenlty bought a Maxtor OnetouchIII firewire external drive because my disk was getting full. I transfered a lot of files to it and freed about 70gb of space. Shortly afterward I started to get a system crash on start-up - with the grey box saying I need to re-start. This would not go away so I ran a the system check cd (OK) then re-booted from a back-up drive I keep. This seemed to fix the problem and the system worked again when I switched back to it. Then the problem happened again and rebooting from the back-up did not work.
I had to reinstall 10.3 then update again to 10.3.9, which I had before. Everything seems fine now apart from one annoying problem - I cannot drag files from the Maxtor drive onto Apps, which I could do before. They will only open from within apps.
Does anyone know how to solve this trivial but very annoying problem?? Also - is it possible the drive caused my crash, or is it a coincidence?
    Thanks for any help.
    Theo

    I figured it out.

  • Neo 4-F USB External Drive Problems

    Hey guys.
I have a Neo4-F (PCB 1.0 board) with an AMD 3200+ CPU, 2BG RAM, running Windows XP SP3.
I have recently purchased a Woxter External Multimedia Player and for some reason it will not install on my system. I first thought it was a software problem (as it works on another XP machine I have) so I reinstalled and tried again. Still wont work. New Hardware icon pops up in taskbar and the device appears in my Device Manager, but it wont appear in Disk Manager.
I saw that the BIOS updates contain an update for problems with some USB external drives, but I am already running the latest BIOS (verified using LiveUpdate).
Has anyone had a similar problem that they were able to fix, any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Problem is in Woxter External Multimedia Player. Go and check player configuration. Usually there are two ways how to be detected by PC

  • Complicated External drive problem.

Some time ago I moved my iTunes onto an external drive, and everything was wonderful... Then I began to have to hide the keyboard from my two year old and strange things began to happen. I have no idea what he may have done, if anything, but he is a useful scape-goat at this point.
Some playlists will no longer let me reorder the tracks, but some will; some tracks will not link to iPhoto slide shows, and some can not be removed, even with the link deleted from iPhoto completely; some tracks will link but then play in silence and some work perfectly...
My decision was to re-locate iTunes back to my iMac, delete it from the external drive and then put it back onto the external drive to see if that cleaned things up.
I went back to the link provided by Jolly Giant (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive) that I used for the first move (as my confidence level needs a set of instructions to follow)
However, while looking in finder to try and work out where I needed to put iTunes back to on the iMac, I noticed that there is an amount of music which is still in "iTunes/iTunes Music" on the iMac. Some of this is also on the External... and some is not. Only the tracks that "are" on the external are showing in iTunes.
I have "Keep iTunes Media folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" both ticked and the "iTunes Media folder location" is still set to the correct location on the External drive.
I therefore think (and please feel free to correct me) the first thing that I need to do is get the spurious tracks copied over to the External, and then delete everything from the iMac and start again.
However as I said above, my confidence level is not great and I am fearful of stuffing things up... So it would be really useful if someone could give me an idea of what settings I need to check, that may have lead to the problems in the first place, and also a walk through of what I should be doing to make the moves, deletions and re-moves, (IF that is what I should be doing any way)
    Many thanks,
    David.

I don't use iPhoto (and my version dates from ca. 8 years ago) so I don't know how it does any associations with what is in iTunes.
Ability to order within a playlist is determined by the sort column selected.  If any is selected except first one on the left then sorting is by that header, not manual.
I don't know how the tracks that are on your internal got there unless it is some relic of the earlier way iTunes organized music (read the link you referenced), but even then it doesn't explain why the music wasn't in iTunes.  That may lie in the history of how you used your computer.

  • USB External Drive Problem

I have a remote user with a ThinkPad T500 running Windows XP SP3 that got a new Seagate 1TB external hard drive and for some strange reason it won't work properly in her laptop. When she plugs it in, Windows chimes that the device is detected but the "Installing" balloon never shows up.
I got on a remote session with her and found that the drive was detected and showed up in device manager under Unknown Devices. I manually installed the drivers and the Windows USB storage drivers installed and successfully and the drive shows up under Disk Drives. However, it still did not show up in Windows Explorer.
I next looked at Disk Management and saw the drive there showing Online but with no drive letter and the partition was not active. I manually activated the partition and set the drive letter but still no appearance in Explorer. Since the drive was now available to Windows as far as Disk Management was concerned, I tried opening a command prompt and changing to that drive letter. From the command prompt I could read the drive directory, read and write files and I even installed the included software so the drive is working but Windows Explorer doesn't see it.
Finally I had the user reboot the computer to see if the drive would work properly after that and she said that not only did it still not show up in Windows Explorer but the Seagate software that was installed was not seeing the drive. She's tried the external drive on a different computer and it shows up and works correctly there so the problem is specific to the ThinkPad. Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle this? I'd appreciate any suggestions short of a full reinstall of Windows. I'd rather avoid that if possible.
Thanks in advance for your responses.

Maybe he drive needs to initialize more than 500 mA.
Connect the drive with a y-cable or an external power-supply.

I have a 500GB external drive that I connect to the home hub via ethernet. When I connect it to the home hub it does not appear in the connections list for the router and none of the computers can see it. Thanks C1Rider. I changed the IP address of the drive to be in the 192.168.1.x group and I also changed it from dynamic IP to static IP. Now I can now connect to the drive from all our machines.
The only strange thing is that when I look at the router settings the network drive still does not appear as connected to the router. This means I cannot use the "Always use this IP address" setting in the router.
Section 8 from this link should help make sure your Static IP addresses never wonder into the Homehub Dynamic allocated IP address range.
If you need to reset the Homehub make sure you record any needed settings so that you can re-enter them afterwards.

  • Using an iPod Classic as external drive problem

    Hey,
I'm new to having an iPod, and I'd like to use it as an external drive. I've selected to enable disk use in iTunes, and applied it, and it says in iTunes I have plenty of free space. However, when I go to Windows Explorer and try to transfer a file, it says the disk is full. Any ideas as to why this is occuring and how to fix it would be much appreciated.

You cannot put a file that is 4GB or larger onto a Windows formatted iPod due to limitations of the FAT32 format used by those iPods.

OK. It's good that you can see the drive in the Import Dialog.
    Do the following:
In your OS create a folder on the external drive and put a copy of any photo in there. In Win Explorer you can use the feature >Edit >Copy to folder.
Then in Lr open the Import Dialog and import this one copy of the photo. Select <Add> at the top center of the Import Dialog so that the photo does not get moved.
After this import Lr should display the drive with a green light.
