External Drive selection/setup for TM

Just upgraded to Leopard. Very excited to use Time Machine, and really want to set it up right from the begining. Thought of this setup:
- for TM: external hard-drive with 2TB (400/800) WD or Seagate
- for shared storage (pix/music/etc.) for iMac and other laptops (PCs): TimeCapsule 1TB (i would like to TM this external as well)
if I get a 1TB for TM, and it starts to run out of space, can I daisy chain it (i.e. expand it)?

1. You can configure the 1TB Time Capsule for TM backups of all your computers in the house.
2. Attach a 1TB USB2 HDD (known as AirDisk) to thee USB2 Time Capsule port and all your computers will have access to it via file sharing and/or Account/PW setups using the Mac's AirPort Utility.
So long as speed to/from the AirDisk does not present a problem then this setup should work for you.
If you want more shared storage then attach a powered hub to the Time Capsules USB2 port and hang more USB2 HDDs to the hub.

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

How choose which partition of my external drive I use for my network

I just bought a Linksys E3200 router for my network house. The setup was easy and everything work fine... well.. almost everything. I have a Iomega 1To external drive whit 2 partition ; the first one is a mac os extend for my Time Machine backup and the second one is NTSF for sharing my picture and music. I use the cisco connect software for setup my storage whit my external drive but I can't see the NTSF part. I can write/read in my mac partition but I don't want to use that part on my network.
My question is : Can I have 2 partition on my network? If not, how can I choose the partition I wanna use.

How to Format external drive previously formatted for NSLU2

Windows XP.
I've had two external hard drives connected to my NSLU2 for several years. Always worked properly. Nevery any problems accessing files from either drive. Now, I'd like to remove one external drive and no longer use it with the NSLU2 (Disk 1). I just want to use it as a "regular" external drive and connect it directly to my PC by USB. When I plug it into my PC, it is not visible in Windows Explorer. When I right click "My Computer" and select "Manage", I can see it in the "Disk Management" section, but there is no drive letter assigned to it. It has partitions. When I right click on any partition, the "Format" option is grayed out and cannot be selected. Also, the "Change Drive Letter..." option is grayed out and cannot be selected. How can I format this disk back to whatever it needs to be in order to use it as a regular external drive? NOTE: I do not need to keep any files on the drive. I've already transferred the files I need to another drive. Thanks!

Never mind. I figured it out. I downloaded a free utility for formatting large drives in FAT32. The utility ran a quick format in just a few seconds and then the drive became available in Windows Explorer where I can now perform a complete format or just use as-is.

I really need to speed up my IMAC. I purchased a new external drive specifically formatted for apple. I also would like to move some other media (movies and music) to this external drive. What is the best method for this?

Formatted for Mac is not a format - for iPhoto you MUST verify that it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
and putting your iPhoto library on an external drive is NOT a backup - you MUST have a good backup plan like Time Machine running or you are 100% guaranteed to lose your photos sooner or later
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
other media questions need to be ask in the forum for the software you use for them - this forum is only for iPhoto and the above instructions are only for iPhoto

Time Capsule external drive very slow for backup

I am experiencing very, very slow backup times using an external drive attached to my Time Capsule. When I recently added a 3 TB Rocstor external drive to my mid-2011 iMac using FireWire, I included it in the drives to be backed up. The internal 2 TB of storage in my Time Capsule was no longer enough, so I plugged a 4 TB WD My Book Studio drive into the Time Capsule's USB 2.0 port and specified this WD drive as the only backup storage. The first backup took almost 48 hours. Now the Time Machine keeps trying to back up about 400 GB - 500 GB (though there haven't been any changes) and is transferring about 400 KB/sec over Ethernet from my iMac to the Time Capsule's external drive. What am I doing wrong? (I recently upgraded the iMac to OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.)

Frankly, I have no way to gauge your network setup, so I can't really tell you what you should expect. I can tell you from my own experiences using a local network based on a 3rd Gen. Gigabit Ethernet AEBS that using Ethernet the average throughput (not interface) was in the neighborhood of 16-20 MBs/sec. The average throughput for a USB 2.0 drive connected directly was about the same.
This works out to an average throughput of around 60 GBs/hour. Depending upon file sizes and number of files being transferred a USB 2.0 drive might reach 100 GBs/hour, but that is a rare outcome. The USB 2.0 drive interface speed is about the same as FireWire 400 - 400 Mb/s or roughly 50 MBs/sec. This is what I know from measurement. Do not expect Ethernet to be any faster for throughput.

Format External Drive - From Mac for Windows

I have a Maxtor One-touch that I need to back up a bunch of data for a Windows XP user. After some research, I thought that formatting the drive in the MS-DOS (FAT) format would do it, however, after doing so and moving all of the data, I have tried the Harddrive on a PC running Windows XP. The drive doesn't mount.
The external drive is a PC/MAC compatible version. Am I overlooking anything? Is there something I need to do in windows to access the drive.... because it's not obvious.

follow either Templetons advise or (if not possible) use Disk Utility and set the partition scheme (behind the Options button) to MBR (Master Boot Record) and use MS-DOS (= FAT32) as file system.
That should also do the trick.
The 'standard' partition scheme on Intel Macs is GPT (GUID Partition Table) which can sometimes lead to the effect with Windows PC that you observed.

Can External Drives be Home for CS3 Photoshop and Illustrator?

I thinking about upgrading to PS and AI CS3, but my C drive is pretty full--only 1GB spare. I'm using Win XP.
Can these products be installed on an external drive, work design images from there or in a partition, and be stored there without problems?
Or, I have 4 partitions with sufficient space that might hold the installations with anywhere from 11GB-193GB. Would installation there be appropriate with all work saved to my external drives? (I have 2)

All of my applications, including Adobe apps, are on drives/partitions other than c:, which is my system bootup drive. Data (i.e., "documents") are on other drives. Scratch space is on yet other drives. However, all of these drives are internal, not external.
External drives should work, but this is not recommended because you simply cannot achieve the data throughput you can with internal drives (unless you are using the eSATA interface or high-speed SCSI drives).
Applications like Photoshop and Illustrator move a lot of data around and require ample scratch space for proper functioning. Every component of your system -- processor, memory, hard drives, etc. -- needs to be optimized to avoid bottlenecks that can send you out for extra coffee breaks. External drives (with exceptions as noted above) are going to slow you down.

Can I move a sparsebundle from external drive to bootcamp for temp backup?

i am in my windows 7 boot camp install and I am trying to move a sparsebundle /off/ a Mac OSX journaled external drive to the Boot Camp drive but I am getting an error that says:
could not find this item. this is no longer located in the G:\Data...your sparsebundle...\bands.
is it not possible to move a sparsebundle like this? I'd like to move it off the drive so I can use the external drive and I have the space on my internal drives...

background: i moved a sparesebundle to an external drive (from within Disk Utility as I recall) so that I would have a backup when I had to reformat my Time Capsule due to some issue. Now I need the external drive to run a clone to but I'd still like to hang onto this sparsebundle in case I deleted a dumptruck worth of data moving info around and playing with dropox.

Not that I know of. It will take quite a while, of course, especially over a network.
The complication with copying from a TC via the Finder is, you have to locate it via the Finder by clicking on the Time Capsule in a Finder Sidebar or on your desktop, then double-click the volume to be able to see the sparse bundle. Then you can drag it.
/Also/ can I please ask you if I should /see/ a Time Capsule from a boot camp partition or from a windows virtual machine or even from a laptop on the network?
As I mentioned earlier, I don't do Windoze.
I think you should be able to see the TC itself from any computer on the network, and the HD as well (unless, perhaps, it's protected by a password), but I have no idea how to do that in Windoze.
Perhaps one of our networking gurus will pop in with a better answer . . .

Can not use my external driver to setup Time Machine

I just bought a new mobile external driver and I planned to use this for Time Machine back of my Macbook Pro. However I got the following error message when I set up the Time Machine:

Problem using external drive as library for iTunes

I am using iTunes on a Mac, with a linked hard drive as the library for my music. Using the "add to library" feature, I am able to link the music on the external drive to iTunes (given the size of the library, I don't want it added to the Mac hard drive). This works perfectly until I need to reboot the Mac. After rebooting, all the songs in iTunes are displayed with an exclamation point and iTunes needs to be individually directed to their location. Basically, I am forced to add the entire library (and remove all the old songs) every time I reboot the Mac.
Is there a better solution to this? In addition to being inconvenient, it also causes me to lose all my old playlists, so I would like a more efficient solution to keeping the library after rebooting.

It sounds like the locations of your music files is not the same as the location identified within iTunes. In Preferences / Advanced, make sure "Keep iTunes music folder organized" is checked and verify that the location of your iTunes music folder is the same folder where your music files are located. If it isn't, you are going to want to change the location to the folder on your external HD and then consolidate your library. The next time you start iTunes, you won't have to re-add your music to your library as iTunes will be able to find it.

Exporting video to external drive un-edited for storage ?

I would like to import digital media off my old dvd tapes and put them on a external hard drive allowing movie withdrawals for events as they arise. 18 or 21st or for a laugh at a parties or whatever ! I don't wan't to loose the memories or the ability to edit. Is this achievable. I would like to channel my video imports straight onto an external drive allowing the whole family access and opportunity to be creative. My computer is loaded with my businesses support info and dumping my business info isn't an option, I don't want to waste time refining so to create space when I have so much storage available externally. The need to back up these files is increasingly important as connections to the old DVD camera are changing all the time and purchasing more adaptors is a bit of a pain. I may be missing something so obvious but I have explored iMovie and haven't seen the options for exporting or channeling the footage. It seems to me that this will be a requirement for a lot of people. So my question is does this facility exist or is there an option, or a way to do what I want. Thanks to any one who can help...

You should be able to drag them from the iTunes widow to an ext HD and copy them over directly. Another alternative is to create a PL and burn a data CD/DVD from within iTunes.
Once you have the video on another HD you could create another iTunes library for just your video.

External Drives on MBP for recording

I'm a logic9 'power' user whose about to make 'as live' recording with 2 synth players and full rhythm section and 3 vocalists.
Historically I've recorded the standard way ie Logic9 on the internal drive and 2 discrete FW800 drives for samples and audio recording respectively. This was doable on my 2008 iMac but is no longer coping with current larger projects.
Enter the MBP
My issue comes from the lack of a FW400 port on the MBP for my Apogee Ensemble. At the moment I'm trialling a 24 track project including 2 software instruments streaming samples from daisy chained drives as follows

When all 26tracks are recording I'm getting just one of my 8 'cores' maxing out. Is the daisy chain causing this
I know its a Logic scenario but posted here cos I'm thinking distributing external drives across the various MBP ports may be the solution

My MacBook Pro is running Mountain LIon 10.8.2. I just purchased a Toshiba external hard drive offering USB 3.0 & 2.0. The NTFS driver for Mac is included. The compatability indication includes Lion ... but not yet ... Mountain Lion. Should I be concerned about loading this software?

Or you could just reformat the drive to exFat or FAT32 and then you won't need any additional software. Also, you can check app compatibility at www.roaringapps.com. I don't know if this includes any type of drivers.

External Drive for Backups or Files

I just purchased a 4TB (2x2TB) external drive from OWC. I have two scenarios for its use and I'd like opinions on which is better. I have a lot of movies and video files (as well as other files that eat a lot of disk space).
*My setup is as follows...*
Mac Pro (late 2007 model)
1x500GB internal drive (Main Volume, aka "Macintosh HD")
2x500GB internal drives (RAID 0 - Used for Time Machine backup volume)
External enclosure with 2x2TB drives (eSATA output)
*Scenario 1: Use the external drive as a secondary storage device.*
In this scenario, I would keep the existing setup with the internal drives, and have a total of 500GB of space available for internal storage.
The external enclosure would have it's 2TB drives RAIDed together (RAID 1) with mirroring so that any video/miscellaneous files copied to it were copied to both drives (auto-backup). This means that I would have a total of 2TB of writeable space, instead of the full 4TB (2TB from each drive).
*Scenario 2: RAID all internal drives together (RAID 0) and use external enclosure for Time Machine.*
In this scenario, I would RAID the 3x500GB internal drives together (RAID 0) and combine them into one 1.5TB volume for Mac OS X. This would allow me to store all my files on the OS X volume.
I would also RAID the two external drives (RAID 0) in the enclosure (2x2TB) into one 4TB volume for Time Machine backups.
I'm leaning toward Scenario 2 because it's my understanding that RAIDing the three internal drives into a single volume will increase overall performance in terms of file save/copy operations. BUT...Will it decrease seek time when I'm accessing files?
I like Scenario 2 because it lets me keep everything on the same volume. I also like it because it allows me to upgrade the drives later to 1TB each and seems to provide the most flexibility. And, if there's ever a fire, I can grab the external enclosure in a hurry and run out of my house with my cats and car keys.
I'm really looking to get this right the first time, so opinions are what I need. Are there any performance drawbacks if I use Scenario 2?
Also, I've read that RAID will only work if the drives being combined are exactly the same (same size AND model number, etc). Is that true? I don't think OS X cares about this, but I've seen it as a warning on a lot of external drive enclosures that come with their own RAID controllers. Maybe it's just a CYA warning for those companies.

Backup is backup, not added storage. The two should be separate. Separation should be by using different drives to avoid loss of data on a partition if the entire drive fails. Furthermore, if you use a drive for permanent storage, then you should also make a backup of it.
Not sure what you mean. Time Machine is not permanent. The main startup volume is perm storage. Time Machine deletes files, yes, but only at the next backup. You can always go back in time and grab a file that was deleted today, yesterday, or two weeks ago, if Time Machine backed up a copy a month ago.

Both scenarios have a dedicated backup volume for Time Machine.
Scenario 1 has the external drive being mirrored, which means I've always got a backup of it when it's used as perm storage.
In scenario 2, the external drive is used for Time Machine only and the perm storage is all on the startup volume.
Sorry, I don't think you saw my two scenarios. Can you look them over and either detail what issues you have with each, or pick one as the "better" of the two. I need advice and it seems that I've met your requirements as you've laid them out.
