External drive starts and stops
I have two IMacs, a 21 and 27 inch, both with OS X 10.6.8 (not 10.6.5 as I see below). I always have an external LaCie drive attached to the 27". When I leave that computer in "sleep" mode the external drive periodically revs up for five or ten seconds then stops. When I have an external drive attached to my 21 inch this never happens. I have no idea what's going on. Is there some setting on the 27 inch that I could change? Is the LaCie drive somehow determining this? Would love to stop it. I'm always a bit amazed at how these drives last, spinning away at 7200 rpm, so I'd rather they only be spinning when they are actually being used.

Click on system preferences
Click on energy saver
Change the computer sleep and display sleep to never.

Hard drive starts and stops a few times
I went to my parents for the Christmas holidays today and tried to use their older computer to put music on to my iPod. Since it's so old I couldn't use iTunes, so instead I used Ephpod. After it was done copying the files to the iPod I saved the changes and disconnected, but immediately afterwards instead of going straight to the menu, the hard drive started and stopped about 10-15 times with the Apple logo being displayed. Now I can't reach the menu, the hard drive will start and stop spinning until it gives up, and when I reconnect it to the computer it won't even recognize it as an external drive. Any ideas?

Is it possible to have an External HD start and stop on a Mini schedule?
My Mini is in a shelf where the buttons are inaccessible and I would rather not have to bother turning it on an off.

jYou can't control an external drive independently of the host system of course, but a Mac mini (indeed any Mac) can be powered up or down to schedule, using the scheduling options for that purpose in the energy saving preference pane. It's fairly rudimentary, allowing startup or wake at a user-specified time by weekday, weekend, every day or specific days and to sleep, restart or shutdown on the same range of options. The system can also be set to automatically restart after a power failure. External hard drives won't power down or up of course, but will typically sleep and rewake if the host system is powered down and back up.
If that fits your need, then these settings are very easy to control.
As to what drive is best - almost any external drive will be fast enough to cope with video because streaming video isn't all that demanding. However, it would be better to use a firewire-equipped drive than a USB, because firewire is more consistent in speed and throughput, while USB can be adversely affected by other system activities or devices. -
Starting and stopping timer using external inputs interfaced with labview
hello,
I have trouble finding how to start and stop the timer using external voltage or current pulse. we are interfacing a circuit to labview. so for that we need to count the time it takes between the two external voltages. We have to keep on comparing the voltages to some reference voltage. And when the external voltage crosses the reference voltage we have to start the timer and again we have to stop the timer using tha same logic. We need it for time calculation between the triggers.

Start and Stop Trigger using PXI-6120 and DigitalStartAndStopTrigger.vi not working :-(

I've been trying for a while now to get my PXI unit to capture a waveform between a Start and Stop (Reference) Trigger using the NI example DigitalStartAndStopTrigger.vi downloaded from the NI website. However, whilst the start trigger and stop trigger seem to be working i.e. the VI runs and stops at the correct times there is never any data read from my DAQmx compatible PXI-6120 card. So I can see the VI is running around the aquisition loop but the Property Node AvailSampPerChan is always returning zero... this has me slightly puzzled. I thought this might just be a driver issue so I've updated my box to the following software versions (see below) and installed the latest drivers e.g. DCDNov07.exe (also from the NI site) but nothing has changed.

before I updated I had the same problem but with the following versions:

So to cut a long story short I still have the same problem with the triggers... does anybody have any ideas what is going wrong?
To add insult to injury it the traditional DAQ example ai_start-stop_d-trig.vi was almost working correctly before I did the upgrade. It had the strange behaviour of capturing the AI0 channel but on the wrong edges (e.g. if I set Start on Rise and Stop on Fall it would do the opposite, Start on Fall and Stop on Rise).
I'm going to leave my box doing a mass compile over night but i'd really like it if someone could suggest a solution or point me in the right direction.

I'm out of the lab today but I'll try and answer your questions as best I can...
1) What are the values you have set for Buffer size, Rate, samples per read and post trigger Samples?
At the moment I have all the values (e.g. sample rate, buffer size etc) unchanged apart from the ones I mentioned in my previous post (see above). I have in the past played around with changing the buffer sizes and rates in the example VI but as this appeared to have no effect on the behaviour I now have them setup as in the download.
2) Does the program end after the stop trigger is implemented?
Yep, if I toggle the trigger line high then low I see the program exits the read loop and the VI stops running as expected.
3) Lastly can you give me the details of triggering method. Are you
using a digital train of users set digital pulses? how long is the
program running.I'm using the WriteDigChan.vi to manually toggle the first digital line of the PXI-6733 card which is wired directly to PFI0 of the PXI-6120 card. Generally, I just start the VI running and then toggle the line high, wait a couple of seconds and then toggle it low.
To me it all looks like it should be acquiring samples but as I said yesterday it just refuses to fill the buffer with any data (and hence no samples are read).
Any ideas? and thanks for you help,

Lightning to 30 Pin Adapter Charging Starts and Stops Intermittently
I purchased two Lightning to 30 Pin adapters, and both are exhibiting the same problem. They seem to start and stop charging intermittently on my iPhone 5, which, to be clear, is not in a case, nor is the adapter obstructed in any way.
I purchased one for a dedicated iPhone/iPad charging station that I keep by my nightstand. The adapters fit flush with the 30 pin connector on the charging station side. At least three or four times during the night, the phone vibrates twice with the "you've just connected to power" alert and wakes me up. Trying the same thing in the car with the other adapter, the iPhone charging starts and stops while connected to my 12v power converter via a Twig cable. When I connect the standard Lightning cable to either the charging dock (through its included USB ports) or directly to the same 12v converter plug in my car's cigarette lighter, I have no trouble charging at all.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Could I have two faulty adapters (which doesn't seem likely), or is there something in the nature of the adapter that makes it turn on and off the charging on occasion?I have the same problem. I bought the same type of Speck Candy Shell case that I had for my 3GS iPhone. The $34.00 Lighting to 30-pin adapter will not fit through the case and into the IPhone 5. I just talked to Apple support and after being on hold 5 mins while the tech talked to her supervisor, the Apple solution is "take your case off the phone when you want to use the adapter". I hope thousands of us complain and Apple fixes this. If Apple had not been so secretive and talked to accessory manufacturers they would of know that the Adapter they designed was faulty. Now I how to drive to an Apple store to return the Adapter to get my money back. Only the USB cable will fit through the case into the iPhone 5.

Web Sharing Start and Stop routines...
Does any one know where to find the actual start and stop methods that get executed when you turn on/off Personal Web Sharing in System Preferences. A long while back I found where those were to do some custom event upon web sharing start-up/shut-down, and now I can't remember where those are located.

answered my question, which helped me to find an error:

Syntax error on line 241 of /etc/httpd/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /usr/libexec/httpd/modhfsapple.so into server: (reason unknown)
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
it appears that this Apache module: modhfsapple.so file is missing. (It was in the locate database, but the file is now gone) I recently had some disk errors and restored from a backup drive, but maybe the backup itself had been missing some of the same files. Bummer.
Now I am wondering if I have to reinstall 10.4 from the DVD or if I can somehow repair/reinstall just the Apache modules to get Personal Web Sharing up and running again?
It's probably safer to reinstall the whole OS, since I don't really know what other bits and pieces might be missing. I have one Intel Mac and one PPC Mac, so I don't think I could safely pilfer the missing shared object module from one to the other. -
PCI6601 - Start and Stop of all 4 counters individually in LabView 5.0

I work with the PCI6601 card and I want to start and stop each of the 4 counters independent from the others.
To start only one counter is quite easy, but two or more won't work.
I have 4 external devices and want to know the counts of each device that means there are four sources.
The Vi's in LabView 5.0 supports only the AM9513/8254/and the DAQ-STC. Perhaps there is no possibility to work with all features of the 6601 in LV5.0.
I tried it with the counter list and with group# and the listed counters started with the internal frequency. But this is not what I want.
Please give me some hints to "rescue the next nights".

MarkusA couple comments that will hopefully let you sleep well tonight...
1. If possible, use the counter functions whose icon show a "CTR" in the lower right rather than a "123". Do you have these in LV 5.0? I know they were available by 5.1.1, but am not certain about 5.0
2. The 6601 doesn't support multiple counters in a group. To program 4 counters requires 4 config chains with 4 separate calls to "Counter Group Config". Note that each call must input a unique group #.
You'll end up with 4 unique task id's which you can then start & stop independently of the others.

is there a way to check if my mac has some maliciuos processes running ?Hi guys, this is my problem:
I use a lot my macbookpro and i often hear that it "talks" saying "start" and "stop" words at random intervals.
the first thing i did was to see if voiceOver was on, but unfortunately it was off.. And my mac continue to talks when it want...
So i think it probably could be a malware on my machine.

Itunes is stuttering -starts and stops at random intervals
Hi there-
I have a 5yr old emac. I am running OSX 10.4.8 and itunes 7.02. I have not had any problems for 5 years,
Today my itunes started stuttering - it starts and stops at random intervals and it takes forever to start playing again, to shuffle songs, etc... I restarted and it did not help.
Can you advise me on what I could do next?

It's possible it could be one of several or combination of many things. I'll list the potential problems, and ways to determine if you have the problem.
First off, restart and do not run any other applications when you run iTunes, and don't run any applications after iTunes is playing music? Does the problem go away? If so, you may not have enough physical RAM installed on your computer for uninterrupted playback. You can find out how much RAM you have installed by clicking on the blue apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen and selecting "About this Mac". The "Memory" line wil display how much physical RAM you have installed. If it is less than 512MB, you should consider getting more.
My second assumption is that you state you have had the computer for 5 years, it is posible that the hard drive (HD) is getting low on available space. Adding music, email, pictures, downloads, etc. over time erodes away at the available space on your HD. Typically on this vintage computer it likes to have at least 20% of HD free space to work relatively efficiently (this will vary based upon how large your HD is to begin with).
To find out how much HD space you have available, click on your HD icon on your desktop once, then press and hold the CMD (open Apple) key and press the "i" key. You will see two statistics, "Capacity:" and "Available:". If the amount of available space is less than 20% of your total HD space you may want to consider removing things from you HD, acchiving things, or optimizing you HD.
How often you repair permissions? I recommend at least once a month, and it's relatively easy and a quick thing to do. Go to your Applications->Utilities folder on your HD. There is an application called "Disk Utility", double click it. Select your HD volume in the upper left corner, then click the button "Repair Disk Permissions". Depending upon how many programs you have loaded this could take several minutes, be patient. When finished, if it fixed any permissions, run it again! Yep, twice, just to be certain, it can never hurt.
Also, while you're in that application, and done with repairing permissions, click the "Verify Disk" button. This may also take several minutes. When done it should report if it thinks your drive is ok, or not. If not, you need to repair it, and in order to do so, you need to boot from another drive (either another physical or logical drive), so that you can attempt to repair it.
If you have the purchased utilities such as Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro you can repair disk and directory problems, which could also be causing your problems. A free utility, such as Tiger Cache Cleaner has some utilities to clean caches, and run your nightly, weekly, and monthly processes that may also need to be run.

I do not have the 'Advanced' tab on the menu bar. I am trying to change ringtone on my iphone 4s. Have done the following: Right cick on song, entered the start and stop times, but unable to proceed as need 'Advanced' tab in order to change to option.
You don't need to upgrade your software. But if you're struggling with Spry, IMO you should cut your losses and switch to something better for the longrun.
If you have a budget to work with, I highly recommend Project Seven's Pop-Menu Magic 3. It's easy to use in DW CS4, 5, 6 or CC. More importantly, it's bullet proof and works in all devices.

Need help getting Tomcat 5.0.28 to start (and stop, eventually)

I am such a newbie to the Terminal and writing scripts, so please forgive my naiveté. I have successfully installed Tomcat in my /usr/local directory, but I am having trouble creating files to start and stop Tomcat, per the instructions on the following page:

But still, it's wronger than that to have them at all: "\n" means a newline (i.e., press "return") not the actual "backslash en" characters. Sometimes people post code with those \n visible: by making it explicit where a line-break should be, one doesn't have as much trouble when a web browser reformats the text and puts line breaks where they don't belong.

Is there a way to report on who stopped or started an active sync? I'm guessing it has to be stored somewhere, but I can't find it.

I believe you are talking about FMS AWS instance and you may be using a centos 4.0.2 instance AMI or lower?
Well ... earlier, options for stopping a centos AWS image was not available, but recently they are there in place, so I suppose if you use a new centos 4.5.1 AMI then probably you can start stop the aws instance on yuor will. Give ut a shot and let me know.

I again cross-checked and found that you were right, start and stop is not supported there .... an alternative method is to take a snapshots of the runinng instnace and terminate that instance after that, later you can use your snapshot to attach to the EBS volume to run your system again. You may need to use the Elastic IP address, because you wont like your users to update each time you terminate the old instance, and create new instance from snapshot. I have never used it in this way, but this is one of the approach. -
Music starts and stops during playback of burned DVD
I really need help with this problem...I made a slideshow and added music from itunes in the program IDVD. Once I burned the DVD the music will start and stop throughout the DVD and not at chapters as I read in other threads - but in random places on the DVD. The DVD sounds like it gets hung up and then starts again. This is my first project using IDVD, so any help would be great.

Do your project have music purchased from iTunes? If so, that could be the cause of this problem. Music from iTunes is DRM-protected and can cause problems in playback. To take care of this, first burn all of your purchased music to a CD, then reimport in an aiff format. To do this, in iTunes, go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing. Look for "Import using", and use the drop-down menu to select AIFF encoder.
