External drive suddenly no longer formatted
i've had a 150 GB internal HDD in a firewire enclosure connected to my mac pro for the better part of 2 years, it basically houses my itunes library and thats it.
it worked fine yesterday when i left work and left the computer on.
this morning, (after the computer was shut down and booted back up) i get "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and it gives me the options to initialize, ignore, or eject.
looking in disk utility (both from within osx, and from running the dvd on boot, it recognizes the drive, but no volumes attached to it, so it wont let me verify/repair disk or verify/repair permissions...
under "partition map scheme" it says it is unformatted...
any suggestions?
I'd be more inclined to reset the FW bus; make sure everything is on UPS, and try Disk Warrior. However, I"ve seen threads in OS X Leopard: Using about FW drives not mounting/not ejecting safely and other problems.
... which is why always backup, and backup your backup too.
Maybe time to retire the drive or case for newer unit if its starting to have trouble and been in use over two years.

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!
Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE: Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

Moving iTunes library to an external drive converting to different format
I want to move entire iTunes library to an external drive. I've found several Mac 101's to help but those helps makes no sense. I should be able to move music to another drive and give iTunes the path to find it but that does not work.
All files are iTunes Plus including everything from Amazon but I want to convert everything to a mp3 or other format so all files are independent of iTunes. Lots of old music from CDs I imported and lots from iTunes as well as Amazon. I guess i could sit and burn everything to a physical cd but that would take months and hundreds and hundreds of cds. Can someone advise how I can convert these files and then move to an external drive?
I'm running mountain lion and version 10.7 of iTunes. Two external drives and 145 gigs of music. Any guidance will be most appreciated.
Thanks.HI Limnos,
Thanks for the reply. Something I forgot (age) to mention, this quest to move the library is precipitated by the Mac drive is running out of space. While I still have about 50 gigs of room left, I was thinking I should just plan on opening up the space by moving the iTunes library.
The other reason is, I read an article about how upon ones death one can not bequeath ones digital music or book files to loved ones. IE; If all of the music was on LP's, tapes, cd's then this physical format can be left in ones final will. But according to what I read and trying to read the user policy by Apple, Amazon etc when one downloads music or a book or whatever that use policy says we don't own the material we only can read it or listen to it. When we die it dies with us. Several people in the article as well as myself believe this is crap. At one time I was purchasing content and then burning it. I stopped because I thought how silly to burn it, I have back ups on an external drive. Man was I wrong. If I have to I'll sit here in my last days and burn hundreds of cd's.
So realizing this, I want to take all my music files and save them to another drive as though this drive was hundreds of cd's. That way all those files in some other format can be played independent of iTunes or transfered to one of my kids PC's or a Mac if they get with the program. If the conversion process destroys the integrity of the file then I have no choice but to burn cd's.
In my estimation, I'm doing nothing wrong. I bought downloadable music just as if I'd bought cd's. I should be able to throw it away or give to my kids upon my death. The kids can decide what they want to do with it once I'm gone. I now no longer buy any music or books in a digital download. All content is purchased with a physical copy. That said, more content providers are moving towards downloads only or like Amazon and Apple towards the cloud and streaming. I realize all this gets into the fair use act but I think most people are unaware of this issue. -
HP SimpleSave used as external drive - suddenly back to unformatted unusable drive - LOST ALL DATA
I was in the process of moving photos from my laptop to my external 1TB SimpleSave drive and all of a sudden the drive lost it's format and appears as the HP Launcher and an unusable 'Local Drive' (my drive name is gone, all my data is gone including the photos I just copied over an hour ago).
Are these drives unstable? I've hardly used the thing and am now wary of using it. Is there a way for me to recover the lost formated drive? I have a second copy of most of the data, but I just lost 500 photos.Ok, i have found a solution...
What has happened is Windows has changed the hard drive from its original form, a NTFS format to a RAW format.
According to other forums, this happens when Windows detects a partially incomplete re-format attempt. I do remember formatting the external a week after i got it, but it seemed fine???? moving on....
From what i have come across, RAW is an obsolete format that XP, Vista and Windows 7 dont recognize anymore... short of having an old pc that runs Win 95, Win 98 which WILL recognise it, i tried several different ways, heaps of different recovery tools etc etc...
i "found" a program called Power Data Recovery! It rules so much!
anyway, i installed it, and done the following -
from the program front screen -
- Advanced Recovery
- click on the drive (in my case its displaying as Physical Drive, 930.86Gb)
- click on full scan
Initially it said it was going to take 600hours but bare with it... it will speed up...
i was too curious to wait for the full scan so i stopped it at like 7%, then previewed the files it had recovered, checked the tick box on a couple of mp3 i wanted to preview, and clicked save...
-saved them to my desktop
-tested the files (mp3s) through winamp and they played fine!
I am just re-starting the recovery process from scratch and will leave overnight.. once completed, I will transfer the recovered files to another external, then re-format the affected external drive again, then transfer the files back to its FIXED home... DONE!
Hope this helps ya'll... -
Following months of straightforward backing-up (using Time Machine) my 1TB G-Technology External Drive no longer appears on my screen when powered up and connected to my machine. I have read that this can happen after updates are downloaded onto the MacBook Pro (or indeed any other Mac product) but with update downloads being inevitable this cannot be avoided. Apple tentatively admit this is a problem but offer no solution that I can find! Even more annoyingly the drive itself is designed for use with Mac products and was the simplest plug'n play device I have ever used. Ideas please?
AB@isisContact the manufacturer for their trouble shooting support. In any case when updating the OS unmount and unplug external hardrives.

My WD 2TB External Drive can't be formatted.
Hi there,
Something really mysterious happened last night and it has completely stumped me.
I have a WD 2TB External Drive that I use with my iMac and Macbook Pro, it's formatted FAT so that I can use it on Windows aswell. This setup has worked well until last night. I plugged the external into a Win PC and it didn't want to pick up. It showed the drive letter and drive but not the usual name. It gave it the generic windows name and when I clicked on the icon nothing happens. When I ran disk management on Win it shows the drive is healthy but that it has 2TB free space which is obviously not true since it had 1TB free space.
I decided to safely remove it and plugged it into my macbook pro. It then also didn't pick up and only showed up in Disk Utility with the partion grey'd out. I tried for a couple of hours to verify the disk and repair the disk in Disk Utility and it would run and complete both but then when I tried to mount it in Disk Utlity it would say it can't.
I then thought the drive is fried so I downloaded Drive Drill to see if I could access the content on it to restore my lost data. I ran it and it picked up the drive and restored 100% of my lost information. I then tried to format the drive but everytime I delete the partition and format it it gets stuck on a certain position and won't do anything for hours.
I know the drive works fine because initially I left it and it eventually formatted the drive and it picked up on the dock. I then tried to copy information over to it and after 100GB it got stuck and wouldn't do a thing. I then decided to format again because I suspected some files that were corrupt might have been transferred over again when restoring the data on it.
Now my problem is that it shows up in Disk Utility and I can run verify and recovery but as soon as I want to format it doesn't work and it stays stuck at the point of formatting the drive.
I have already tried the following:
- A different USB plug
- Formatting in Windows
- Different Formats (ex-FAT, NTFS etc)
- Completely removing the partition and creating a new one
Here are screen shots of what it says when I verify and recover the drive:Thanks for the feedback Linc,
I have tried to repartition it and I also tried to delete and format, all of it takes time and finishes the process but then when I tried to mount it says it can't mount the drive and neither does it pick up on Windows. Very confused! -
ITunes stopped using my library and data on an external drive suddenly.
My iTunes folder is on volume H:\itunes since years.
Today when I startet iTunes, all setting were resetted, the library was empty (apart from those cloud songs) and the path to the folder was set to C:\user\mymusic...
When I set the path in the settings to H:\itunes nothing changes - although iTunes seems to accept the chaning, my music files are not added and as I guess fom not being able to delete the unwanted folder from C:\user\mymusic... it is still working with those files.
Replacing the .xml and .itl files with 1 week old backups does not bring any change either.
I guess it is an update issue and the updated iTunes is just not able to work with files on external drives - I have seen similar problems in this board from the last couple hours... does it still work for someone or do you have any ideas I could try?
Thanks in advance!Okay, I found out for myself what the problem was:
Somehow iTunes decided to no longer knowing where I store my ituneslibrary.itl and switched back to default (users/mymusic/itunes).
I needed to start iTunes with pressed SHIFT in order to define the old folder on the external drive as the new one.

OS X Mavericks (10.9)- Ejecting external drives taking too long
So ever since I upgraded from 10.8.5 to the 10.9 GM any external hard disk or flash drive take too long to eject (~10 s). I'm sure it's not the drives because I've tested the same one on different Mac mini on 10.9 but it ejects within a second or two. I've tried USB 2.0, 3.0 and Thunderbolt drives. Is anyone having this issue and does anyone know how to fix it? I would rather avoid having to do a clean install. I'm using a mid 2012 MBA.
In my case the results of EtreCheck

External drive suddenly has strange icon
Never seen this before. Usually the external drives show an orange hard-drive icon and drive name on the desktop. I've got dozens of external drives. Always the same icon. Suddenly one of my drives, which I've been using quite frequently, and which has always had an orange icon like all the others, has come onto the desktop with an icon looking like one of those old portable zip drives.
I'm at a loss as to why. Or if it means I'm about to have something wonky happen to the drive.
Any suggestions?
BenHi. You may be able to restore the icon by copying one of the others via the Get Info windows:
Open the Get Info windows for the drive with the wrong icon and a drive with the correct icon. Select the correct icon so that it is highlighted and do a Command(Apple)-C to copy it - then select/highlight the wrong icon in the Get Info window and do a Command(Apple)-V to paste.
You could check out the drive directory structure, etc. in Disk Utility > First Aid > Verify Disk - or with Disk Warrior
http://alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
If S.M.A.R.T. Status is supported on the drive, DU or DW should report the status as 'Verified' - or not: "If the S.M.A.R.T. status for a disk shows "Verified," nothing is wrong with it. If you see "About to Fail" in red letters, you should back up the disk and replace it as soon as possible." - from DU Help.
If the Finder is experiencing widespread wierdness, you may have to delete the com.apple.finder.plist file in HD/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and then re-select your Finder Preferences. Good Luck. -
External Drive is no longer recognized by Macbook
I have this external drive....
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-WDME2500TN/dp/B0012GK3M Q/ref=sr11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1280159206&sr=1-1
It is about 60% full of music/pictures/documents that are NOT on my Macbook, therefore I use it regularly.
Every once in a while, I accidentally remove it without properly ejecting first. But I guess I did it one too many times because now the computer will not recognize it at all.
To insure that the drive wasn't corrupt, I plugged it into a PC. It worked fine. The files are all there and were completely accessible. But as soon as I plugged it back into the Mac, it won't show up.
When I try a Disk Utilities repair, I get the following message:::::
FIRST AID FAILED
Disk Utility stopped repairing “My Passport” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
Verify and Repair disk “My Passport”

I have NO $$$, so telling me to purchase a $30-100 program will not help me AT ALL. I'm looking for solutions that will not effect my wallet, even if they take all day to complete.
What can I do????????Ok. Just to set one part straight- I doubt the problem came from unplugging your drive without ejecting. This usually isn't a problem unless files are writing or in use when you do it, but ejecting is a safe way to avoid issues.
Try force-mounting the drive in terminal by using the following commands
*mkdir /Volumes/yourdrivename*
this command should give you the location of the drive on your computer. (It should be something like disk2 or disk1s3) Then type the location into:
*mount /dev/yourdrivelocation*
Whether or not this works, follow up this step by ejecting the drive and unplugging and plugging it back in. This worked for me when I was having this issue.
Also- are you able to backup and reformat the drive? This would be a good thing to try if other attempts have failed. -
Greetings. I could use some advice here.
I bought a WD external hard drive to back-up some files on my old iMac, but I reformatted it & set it up on my new iMac.
After I backed up the files I wanted, I hooked the external drive to the new iMac, but now the new iMac doesn't recognize that external drive.
What should I do?
I also have a flash drive that neither iMac will recognize. Similar issue or no?
Would appreciate any adice I can get on these situations.
Thanks for you time and attention. You need to deal with your vendor or AppleCare Customer Relations. We can't tell you what to do nor what is possible.
It's unfortunate you have had these problems, but we really cannot resolve them for you. We do not represent Apple nor can we tell you what to do other than attempt to resolve the issue either with your vendor or through Customer Relations. -
Convert a PC external drive to Mac Book format
I purchased an external hard drive and it needs to be reformatted for my MacBook Pro - how do I do this? I just got my MacBook and I'm converting from a PC.
Open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, select it in the sidebar, choose the Erase tab, and specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.

External drive suddenly not showing up?
Hello--
I have one of those Book Drives (500GB) that had been working fine on my iMac. On Monday night, I installed and ran Norton AntiVirus on it. Everything worked fine. Would that be causing it to suddenly not appear on my desktop when I start up? There is power to the drive, since it's lit up green...
Any ideas?
Thanks!Disconnect it and reconnect it. If it doesn't reappear, launch disk utilities and see if it can see it. If it does, try to repair it and mount it.

Render Graphics everytime I make a change!!?!?!
I've read many of the threads about rendering, how you must match the project/squence settings to your clip settings to avoid rendering (that wonderful "Writting Video" bar). This makes sense for camera footage....match your footage format to your se
