External drive troubles

Dear friends
I got an external case branded as SPQ IPS series. It is Firewire 400, 800, USB2 and eSATA compatible with a 1.5TB WD green caviar that I installed and many troubles with it. I checked the case with all the ports except the eSATA port. The unit should be bootable but sometimes wont boot or open the programs. After doing some test with the Caviar with successs as one internal unit, I went back to the store and changed the case for a new one but the same problems persist.
In this moment I've no idea what to do, but I am totally disillusioned with this gadget. Could you help me?
TIA

Well - although both drives work through the supplied red IDE cable I have to say the slave drops to UDMA2
I think this probably slows the master, even though it test out for UDMA5....
So I am starting to think I will do a little research and find a supplier of high quality cables and try out with one of those - I will post back here, but that might not be for a week or so.
About my external Maxtor one touch drive - still no joy there, and I am HIGHLY reluctant to reformat - that 300GB drive has backups of all FIVE machines networked in this house and I do not fancy burning them to DVD either....
But I could try creating a small test partition on there - would that help?  I cannot see how it is going to, but I guess I have to try everything I can.  I have still had no reply to my email to MSI support, does anyone else here get any joy out of support emails?

  • USB External Drive Trouble

Back in April, I hooked a 500 GB USB external drive to my iMac in order to run time machine. All worked fine until October 17. Yesterday Time Machine popped up with a message telling me it had not backed up in 10 days and I should figure this out. At this point, I noticed that the external drive was no longer mounted on the desktop, although I could see it in Disk Utility. The POSIX error came up. After a long search on the forum and fighting with a PC in the house, I was able to reformat the drive and let Time Machine do its thing.
The initial backup went great and it seemed to back up every hour until 12 am or so it says. Once again, I came down this am and the drive is not mounted and not showing in Disk Utility. I turned it off and on again and now the computer tells me it needs to be initialized.
What in the world is going on? Is it related to USB control and SL? Is it a Time Machine issue? Should I reformat the drive and see if I can simply copy files to the drive and see if it stays mounted that way?
I do not know how to tell an external drive when to unmount or if it should upon the computer going to sleep.
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I spend more money on a new drive.
    Debbioe

Thanks, that one's not on my suspect list... yet
Good luck with the replacement, I'm sure it will be fine. When you get it remember to format for Mac OS X.
    1. Launch Disk Utility
    2. Click the "Erase" tab
    3. Select your entire external drive on the sidebar (the uppermost icon).
    4. Format: "Mac OS Extended Journaled"
    5. Name the Disk (Time Machine, or whatever) only the name of the volume will show in Finder.

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...

  • Trouble using iphoto on external drive

    Hi,
I have an i photo library on a WD My Passport external drive and am having trouble getting photos off of the drive. When I select he photos I'd like to export, where I 'd like them to go, and hit okay, I get an error message that says: Unable to create/... what can I do to get photos of the drive?
    any thoughts?
    thanks

    Couple of questions:
What format is the external drive?
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • Having trouble exporting photos from iPhoto to external drive.

I am having trouble copying files to my external drive.  It is a shared external drive connected through my wireless router.  I can copy some photo's to the externaldrive folder and they transfer no problem and some of the photo's from the same folder appear to be transfering but as soon as the copying window goes away so does the photo's from the folder I was putting them to.  New to apple so I am still learning the in's and out's and I am sure it's probably something easy.  Any help would be appreciated.  The external drive I was using on a PC before and the Mac seems to see most everything so not sure if that matters or not.  Pic and video's came from same camera on the same day.

is there anyway to transfer direct to the hard-drive?
What does that mean? Do you mean have your Library on an external drive? Yes, that's easy.
I have a network HDD connected to my router
    Two issues here.
    1. That NAS is not an appropriate disk for an  iPhoto Library -  iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Later versions simply won't allow the Library on such devices.
    2. Router? Wireless connection?  A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
    To move an  iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Trouble Exporting QuickTime on to portable external drive

I bought a portable external drive (Lacie) and I am unable to transfer my project on to it in the form of a self contained quicktime video export.
I tried to copy it from the Lacie external drive that I first exported the project to and I got an error message, "type 36" that said it couldn't copy or read part of the file and it aborted the copy. Then I tried twice exporting the project straight to the portable drive, and each time, instead of exporting one self contained QT file, there are three files: the origional file name and the second and third files have: "av1" and "av2", added to the origional file name. So it looks like its exporting the video and audio seperately?
I imported the main file back into Final Cut to see if it would play on a timeline and it did. But it is one third the size (2 gig) of the origional exported self contained video (5.5 gig). So something's not right.
I am trying to give my editor one file so that he can make a DVD.
Does anyone understand what's going on? It seems to me the problem lies with the new portable drive but I'm not sure what to do. Thank you for any help, guidance, or further trouble shooting.

Reformat the drive Mac OS Extended with Disk Utilities found in the Utilities folder in the Apps folder. (Click on the erase tab) if you haven't already done this.

  • Having troubles reading usb external drives.

I have a macbook pro, mid 2010 is when I got it.  The issue I've ran into for about 6 months now is my usb external drives are not currently being recognized.  It's only external drives and thumb drives though.  My mac recognizes my iphone, charges my camera usb, lets me use a usb midi controller.  About six months ago I was having trouble connecting a usb dmx lighting interface.  I called the company and they sent me to a workaround and it worked.  http://groups.google.com/group/dmxis_users/browse_thread/thread/c5746c10c618bf19 ?hl=en_US
Ever since then, it's never been the same my external drives don't work.  I even took it to an apple store and replaced the internal boards.  (Sorry for not knowing specifics)  Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

That would explain your problem!  If you have a backup then see if it's on your backup.  Otherwise, you will need to restore it from your installer DVD using Pacifist:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    >5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop Leave original alone Update ..... Default selection Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

Why won't my new Airport Extreme recognize my USB external hard drive.  I put a USB port on the base station, and the system recognizes my printer.  When I click on disks - it lists my printer, and when I click on Printers it lists my printer.  What do I need to do to get it to recognize the external drive?  BTW, the MacBook recognizes it, no problem.  I have erased it and reformatted it.  I am running the new Lion OS.  Any help is appreciated.

  • Trouble backing up external drive with time machine

I have a small USB stick that I use to store important documents but documents that I don't access very often.  I have an additional 500 GB hard drive that I use for backing up with Time Machine.  I want Time Machine to backup both my internal hard drive (Macbook Air 2011 Lion) as well as the small USB stick. I've searched the forum and discovered that I needed to reformat the USB stick, which I did (it is now Mac OS Extended).  The USB now appears in the list of excluded drives in Time Machine preferences, which I removed.  Thinking that Time Machine would be backing up my USB stick now, I backed up and then turned the computer off.  The next day, I looked at the external drive, and it didn't seem to have a backup of the USB.  I entered Time Machine and the USB is "greyed out" which means it wasn't backed up. I've retried backing up several times by including the USB in Time Machien preferences, but it seems that when I click "save" it doesn't actually save because when I open Preferences up again, the USB stick is in the list of excluded items again.  Have I done something wrong?  Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

I don't use Time Machine but my view is that it is too dangerous for sticks which may be removed - I understand that it may delete previous backups if it discovers that the stick no longer exists.
    You could:
manually copy the stick to your main drive from time to time
use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup the stick
use a utility to mirror the stick to your main drive

  • Storing music library on an external hard drive troubles

I recently purchased an external hard drive to store my itunes library to for I was filling up my C drive on my PC. I moved all my music to the external hard drive. I have also backed it up to another far larger external drive just in case. I changed the settings under Preferences - Advanced - General to show that the library was now in Drive K:iTunes.
Before I deleted the music of off my C hard drive I purchased a single song to see if it would act correctly. It did. I synced my ipod (Classic 160 Gig)and it added that song to the K drive and to my ipod. I then deleted it from my C drive.
The next time I turned on my computer and opened iTunes it pulled up an empty library. My music is still on the K drive under iTunes and it is backed up on the larger external drive.
I checked the preferences, etc. again and it still says K:iTunes but it doesn't "go there" to pull up the library. It just pops up like I've never purchased or put any music in it. Help!

If you drag the files around through Windows Explorer, iTunes loses track of them. So, to remedy the situation...
Click Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab > General sub-tab
UN check "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library" if selected and click OK
Then click File > Add Folder to Library and add your K:\iTunes\ directory.
Going forward, make sure you always have your external drive connected to your PC and showing in My Computer prior to launching iTunes.
Also, when you purchase music from iTunes or import CD's in the future, they should go directly to your K: drive if you have that set as your default folder location in your Advanced preferences.
If you notice that you have files scattered around on your hard drives, you can go to your Advanced preferences and verify that your K: drive is still your default folder location, and the select the option to Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library. Then, from the Advanced menu of iTunes, click Consolidate Library. This basically looks at the files in your iTunes library, and if it finds any that are not stored in that default location, it copies them there.

  • Trouble Booting from External Drives; Trying to Defragment from External

I have a Verbatim External Firewire 400/USB 2.0 hard drive that has Leopard installed on it. I have installed Drive Genius and Disk Warrior on the external drive. I boot holding the Option key and see the list of drives, and the External does appear. When I select it, the computer just reboots and loads the loads the internal hard drive. I'm trying to defragment the MacBook Pro from an external drive, but I can't do much if it won't boot from an external. I know with Intel Macs, you can boot from USB 2.0 and FireWire. Why won't it work? To be more advanced, I made a disc image of the MacBook Pro Restore DVD and restored it to a new partition of the external, thinking the operating system might be different in the new MacBook Pro because of the new settings in the System Preferences that control the glass trackpad. I'm stuck. Please help.

No, I would not recommend making a disc image. I would recommend cloning the drive to a freshly erased external drive. Cloning is not the same as making a disc image. Disc images cannot be used to boot the computer. They are large and unwieldy. They are intended to be burned to an optical disc and not used as a system backup.
Clones are exact file copies of everything on the source drive such that the destination drive is a mirror of the source drive. You can boot clones, you can update them, and you can access them directly just like any other drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the drive to which you will restore or backup.
Source means the drive you are restoring from or backing up.
There are many alternatives to using Disk Utilities Restore option. Any of the following can create clones as well as perform regular backups, and they can incrementally update a clone:
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    10. MimMac (Shareware)
    11. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)

  • Trouble with ministack v3 external drive

Hi guys! I'm having a real problem here with my external drive. I just bought a ministack v3 for my macbook (black one). I copied all of my data into it (not back up, just normal copying) to reset the whole system. After reinstalling + updating, I opened the data in the external drive and tried to copy them back into my laptop, it asked for password, and then this error appeared: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code - 50)". however, i could copy only two files which were illustrator file and .jpg; the .dmg files can be opened and installed but not copied, same as the video files. I looked up but could not find any references to this problem. Can anybody explain and show me how resolve this? Thanks a lot, guys!

I'm having the same problem, and out of no where.I found this old forum http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1126326 which didn't work for me, but it might for you . . .

  • External Hard Drive Trouble

I use macs all the time and I have a lacie external drive that has done me proud, but I just enrolled in an editing course that teached Avid editing on a....PC...
I can't reformat my existing drive so I need a new one. I'm looking for something small, light, compact, and durable. After this course I will reformat the drive for my mac and take it abroad for a bit of a travel documentary project.
It seems all the drive that fit my description are USB 2.0 which I have always been taught never to use for video work.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm considering getting a Lacie Rugged drive but they are hard to find in stock in stores or online and I need the drive next week.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Matt Chach-
I find the performance of USB drives to be poor at best. FireWire drives are getting very difficult to find, especially in the discount chains.
Since you are happy with the product, have you checked the LaCie site? I found them on the clearance page: LaCie Clearance hard Drives
They are also on the Mobile Hard Drives page: Mobile Hard Drives
I use LaCie products. I always keep a spare power supply brick around.

  • Trouble formatting a 1TB external drive

I am unable to format or partition a 1TB external drive, connected by fire wire 400. My computer is a Power Mac G5 (not intel), 1.6 Ghz, and 1.25 RAM. I am running OS 10.5.6.
When I first plugged in the TB drive, its icon displayed on the desktop. Under Get Info, it was formatted Windows FAT 32. So I opened Disk Utility and attempted to erase and reformat the drive for Apple. I selected the disk drive icon in the left sidebar window of Disk Utility, clicked on Erase, and selected Mac OS Extended (journaled) and clicked to proceed. After a moment I got an error message that the formatter had failed. The help menu stated that this will happen when trying to format a disk larger than 500 GB. The instructions were to partition the disk, and then, presumably, format the partitions. The disk's icon will no longer show on my desktop, even after a restart. However it still showed in the Disk Utility left side window. So I selected it and clicked the Partition button. But all I get is a window that says this disk cannot be erased. All the partition buttons are grayed out. After trying a few times, the Partition button itself is grayed out and causes the spinning beach ball, and I have to force quit disk utility.
Any suggestions on how I can get this 1TB external disk formatted for Apple?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Uhg... is it too late to return it?
